Uncovering the Past

Prospector Whelgar wants you to scour the excavation site in search of the 4 missing tablet fragments: Ados, Modr, Golm and Neru.
Ados Fragment
Modr Fragment
Golm Fragment
Neru Fragment

Description

Just before the invasion I uncovered a large tablet called the Goaz Stone. The translated text breaks off in 4 places. The text speaks of a "divine plan" and a "doomed prophecy."

I fear we are running out of time. I am too old to go down and brave those beasts. But you are strong.

Scour the excavation site and uncover the 4 missing tablet fragments: Ados, Modr, Golm and Neru. Search for them in ancient artifacts or where the soil is loose. Bring them to me so I can begin unlocking the mystery!

If you're having trouble finding an item or two, don't forget to look on the ledge where Sarltooth spawns -- often you'll find one just in front of him. Other easy to miss places are under the bridges that span the dig site and the area just behind the raptor eggs, where the purple raptors are (near the ramp that leads up to the quest NPCs).
Rating: +44 [-] [+]

Worst spots, in reverse order of annoyingness:

3. Up where the boss raptor spawns - you have to climb a hill on the west side and walk up some boards to a ridge.

2. By a tree at the base of the ramp leading up to the quest NPCs - this is kind of far away from the rest of the site.&nbsp A few lower raptors hang out there.

1. A little hole in the terrain in the southeastern corner of the site, visible when looking straight down from the bridge up top.&nbsp Though you can walk to this from the floor level by going over a small rise, you'll never realize the spot exists unless you look down from above.

The rest of the possible spawn points are visible in the main center area with most of the raptors.

Item location is random, as many people have said.

Make sure you go up to the high area at the southern end of the site, where the named raptor is that is where my final piece was, and it took me a little while to realize that I could get up there.

Ados - Ancient Relic (Crypt)
Golm - Ancient Relic (Short Fat Vase)
Modr - Ancient Relic (Tall Skinny Vase)
Neru - Loose Soil

These are random spawns throughout the excavation site so it will take a while to find them all.

The spawns for each relic are in random places around the excavation, sometimes being up a hill with some equipment. Each looks like something different: a tall and skinny vase, a stone chest, a short and wide vase, and a pile of loose dirt. Not positive which one is which.

I think that instead of complaining we should simply post detailed instructions on how to find the items when they are in difficult locations.

I've done the quest a couple of times, and helped other people with it, and there are a limited number of spawn spots for the items. As far as I can tell, any item can spawn in any spot. That might not be completely true, but so as to not be surprised, expect that kind of behavior.

The most difficult two places I've encountered were both described here already.

One was behind the tree at the foot of the path up to the cave.

The other has been mentioned here, but is very hard to find and so I'm going to describe it more completely. It's at the back of the excavation site, nearly directly under the cave, but a bit to the left of it. There is a small but sort of deep valley between two cliffs that you reach by climbing a little hill. It is very hard to find if you don't know it's there, because it's not very noticable, and it completely hides the item unless you climb up there.

There is a simple macro for displaying the above coordinates to help you locate quest items:

***********************************************
Macro:
/script px,py=GetPlayerMapPosition("player")
/script DEFAULT_CHAT_FRAME:AddMessage(format("[ %s ] %s , %s",GetZoneText(),px,py))

Just copy it in and assign a action button...

Qamgine noted this, but it's worth stating explicitly -- the spawn points for the fragments will vary by individual.

I.e., I did this quest, then went back later to help my girlfriend do it. The places she found the fragments were all different than where I found them.

A group is certainly helpful, but I am not sure it's needed -- there were so many people killing here both times I spent time it didn't seem like there was much probem keeping the area mostly clear.

One nice thing about this is you are a skinner -- with the fast respawn times there is LOTS of leather available. Plenty of medium leather, and a fair bit of heavy leather. Even got a few heavy hides. Lots of people leave their corpses around for you to skin.

I had the hardest time finding snarltooth so here's how for anyone that needs it:

Go to 31, 48, climb up JUST A TAD - DO NOT GO PAST 31, 48! Then turn LEFT, follow the curve, you'll see boards and boxes, go up the boards and there is Snarltooth (box handy 9/10 times)

There are four different things to find.

1) Loose Soil: Looks like a mound of dirt.

2) A stone case: square stone thing

3) Tall thin Vase:

4) Short fat vase:

They appear at random spots all throughout the camp. As others have said, the raptors spawn very fast. Best to have a group with you.

I found another spot. from the ledge the boss is on, jump down to another ledge to the east. you have to go past the boss. I'm not sure if this is the same ledge you see from the cave where the NPCs are, or if that's another ledge, and whether the relics might be able to appear on that one as well or not.
I wasted probably an hour trying to find that. and it rained at one point.

I found a really evil one. I had 2, the tall and the fat vases. Well, i found the crypt and looted. I was about to go, but i saw glimmer. THE LOOSE SOIL WAS INSIDE THE CRYPT!! Ah. By the way, their usual place (random):
Always check behind Sarltooth ,
The great tree at the roads leg which leads to the dwarves,
The little house-wreck,
In the middle of the site.

well, all my artifacts were off the beaten path

1. loose soil - found near a wooden ramp outside ditch re-popped near another wooden ramp inside ditch.

2. a stone case (my description would be an ancient burial coffin of some sort) - found behind tree going to ramp that goes to where Prospector Whelgar and Merrin Rockweaver are hiding re-popped in ditch closest to ramp behind ruin wall

3. a tall thin vase (tall brown vase w/ greek head picture) - found infront of Snarltooth re-popped behind short ruin wall close to a bridge (the closest bridge to Snarltooth)

4. a short vase (short brownish spittoon-like vase w/ what looks like tribal gnomes holdings shields and spears) - found in hidden nook behind wrecked campsite re-popped in the middle of the excavation area

Reason for all this: (1.) there's gotta be a method to this randomness (2.) so people know what they're looking for (3.) guess-timation on where to look

Hope this helps

Oh, BTW ... these things (except the soil) are massive, so when we say Tall thin vase, it's not like the one stem flower vases you see in grocery store floral section, it's Taller than my character, and she's an elf

another spawn point is next to a tree between the two bridges

Dont forget to chck behind the tree at the bottom of the climb up to the cave. Another odd spot was high on the ledge at the far side of the pits. We got there by climbing the slopes at the right rear corner of the pit area

2) Fragments spawn in random containers, steel boxes, and loose soil
3) Neru is the hardest to find sometimes, it is completely out of your vision at times on a hill behind Sarltooth. I've included an image. Good luck

I see that there is different oppinions and experiences but this is how I found it. I found the two first fragments pretty easy. some was in the soil right in the first "hole" when you come down from the path or up from the road. I walked under two bridges and there was another. Then I spent some time looking for the next ones. I moved closer back to the left when you have your back against the first two bridges (when facing the ledge with sarltooth on) but couldn't find i. I decided to move my cursor up a little too take a overview and then I found that there was another vase up on a lower ledge than sarltooth (the 29 raptor) was on. After some research in the area I decided only way to get there was to go through Sarltooths ledge. I kicked him and his companions up there and discovered Sarltooth had been watching over one of the fragments. Jumped over to the lower lvl ledge and got the forth one. My point is, if you have a hard time finding it look up on the two ledges (the one with Sarltooth and the one right aside of it) A good tip if it is up there is also to combine Sarltooth- quest with this one so you wont have to kill him twice (I had already killed him for the quest earlier and had to kill him twice anyways)
