Description

Strong magics be found in the centaur holy place... the holy place of Maraudon. The Desolace tribes of centaur protect that place wit' their lives, but they canna stop us from takin' what we need.

You, you head to this Maraudon place and find the rock creatures made of shadowshard. You bring me the purple crystals, and Uthel'nay make you somethin' for your time.

The place be dangerous, so maybe you be bringing some friends.

The shadowshard fragments drop off the stone elementals outside of the purple instance entrance of mauradon. Drop rate is about 1 shard every 2 kills. Easily done without a group if you're level 47+.

First of all you pick up and hand in the quest from Uthel'nay in Ogrimmar in the Valley of Spirits.

Maraudon is in the cave in Desolace just NE of Shadowprey (29,62 for those using coords). To complete this quest, as has already been noted you do not have enter the instance, but you do have to enter the dungeon (once you've gone through the initial big stone doors, there's a lot to explore before you enter the swirly instance portal).

The elementals that drop the Fragments can be found in the PURPLE zone of this pre-instance area. You will find a room with two passageways leading away with bright crystals around the entrance. One's orange and the other's purple. Take the purple one. There be your elementals not soon after. They are generally 40 and 41 elites. 100% drop rate.

FYI, as of patch 2.3 the mobs aren't elite anymore. Should be a piece of cake to solo if you are appropriately levelled.

Coords (on titan panel) are 39,86

I don't know about everyone else, but at 46 I got 3450 experience for it. It is July 2006 maybe they patched it because everyone says you only get 350.

I just finished this quest at lvl 50 shaman.
recieved 1400xp and a pretty boring necklace! :)
i got the fragments off the rock elements in the purple side.
Is easy quest to do as you go along!

soloed it outside the purple entrance with feral druid. drop rate was 100%, only thing to take care is not to get kicked off edges and aggro other creeps. got 7200 xp and 500 repu with trolls.

You are quite right. Although this is a mauradon quest, it is the lower lvl elites outside the instance and therefore can be done at a much lower lvl than the actual instance itself. The reason a lot of these people weren't getting hardly any xp for it is because they were doing it at lvl 50+ when they should have been doing princess runs or moving onto ST.
As you can see this quest is obtainable at lvl 39 and can be done well before you start ZF.

I just did this on one of my newer characters and got 500 rep, not 350. Quite a nice surprise, since I'm on the last 5k to exalted with Darkspear.

Mauradon is southwest edge of desolace in the Valley of the Spears Coords 29.5/62.5 solo'd the gem part easily at level 44, the beasts are mostly 40/41, just watch yourself rounding the corners. I got a drop of a gem everytime.

I completed it at level 50 and got 1450 exp (I think 1450. It was around that amount.)

The shards dropped 100% for me from those Shadowshard rock dudes that are outside the Purple entrance in Maraudon.

Actually you can gather all 10 shadowshards fragments without entering the instance itself :)
The elementals (Shadowshard Rumbler, Shadowshard Smasher) which drop them are in the caves leading to the Maraudon entrance.

I ghatered all fragments while doing the "The Pariah's Instructions" quest and killing centaur khans (3 or 4 are outside of Maraudon).
