Just tried to do the first part of the blue shard quest chain, a week after 1.11. Definitely had to be dead to see the spirit of azuregos.

He is a part of the Scepter of the Shifting Sands questline (to open the gates of AQ).&nbsp Back in the day of the server event, players had to speak to the live version of the dragon and kill him in order to progress with the quest.&nbsp The dragon was overcamped, and to relive this, Blizzard added his spirit for any player on the questline to talk to, regardless of whether the real version was alive or not.

Wanders the same path as Azuregos when Azuregos hasn't spawned yet / has been killed. Apparently used for the AQ quest line. Can only be seen while dead.

As of 1.11 he can be seen in spirit form while dead. Had 3 people looking for him, couldn't see him. Suicided and voila, there he was walking the same path as he does when alive.

god... its so obvious.. Azu is a quest npc in the AQ scepter quest, and if he is killed and despawns which was the case before, you would be at the mercy of others if you could do your quest. No you can always work on your quest
