This quest is part of a chain of chain quests.

The first quest in the chain is On Guard in Ashenvale, which begins in Astraanar, though it may be possible to start the chain from Gaxim himself.

I'm probably not the first dwarf/gnome/human to miss this and all the Venture Co stuff because we have a full quest log and way too much to keep us busy in Westfall and Redridge. I hadn't even pushed through to Menethil Harbour let alone got through Ashenvale and into Stonetalon. This should stay an option from Mauren a lot longer than it does, by the time I got back to him he was offering the basilisk quest.
