Hardened Tortoise Shell (9)

Description

My brother is working on a new fuel for his rocket car. He's brilliant, he really is. So brilliant that... I think that new fuel he's designing is strong enough to eat right through the car's chassis!

I want to reinforce its fuel tanks before that happens.

The tortoises out on the flats have very hard shells. I want to use them to create new tanks for our rocket car. Tanks that can hold my brother's new fuel.

You look responsible enough. Will you get me those shells?

The drop rate does seem very low and the maps for where the things are are a little deceptive.

Best place to kill bunches of the turtles is 82, 56 near a derelict ship.

Soloed at lvl 32, NE Rogue. Easy quest. Here's how I did it.

Headed directly north from the Raceway HQ till I saw a boat half buried in the sand. You can't miss it either. Besides the fact that there were about 17-18 Snappers bumbling around it, it's a large object as well! Best of all though, there are no baddies in the area the Snappers are in, they're just hanging around outside where the Snappers are. The drop ratio I seemed to have here was actually about 45-55% and they also dropped some nice items for the AH, even got one blue letter sword!

The coords for the ship, if you're using Cosmos(which if you're not you need to!), are: X82, Y55. These are the exact coords while standing under the prow of the ship.

I also found one other place that seems to be pretty decent though I was done when I found it. On the eastern wall of the shimmering flats, about halfway up is a rocket car(otherwise known as a Pod Racer for the SW geeks) embedded about halfway up the wall.

To get here, head directly east of the Raceway HQ.

The coords are: X86, Y76. In front of that is a pretty decent grouping of snappers, but they are mingled with Saltstone Crystalhides and Scorpid Terrors so look out!

I decided to post this as allot of people in my guild that are at the point of doing this quest have been asking me how I did it. This has seemed to work out well for all of them, so I hope this helps anyone reading this!

The turtles that you kill for this quest also drop Turtle Meat (https://classicdb.ch/?item=3712).

SAVE IT!

You'll need it for the quest "Soothing Turtle Bisque" in Hillsbrad. (Alli: https://classicdb.ch/?quest=555 -- Horde: https://classicdb.ch/?quest=7321)

If anyone else was having trouble with the lvl 35 Snappers I found a large group of lvl 33 Borers that seem to have a pretty decent drop rate at 82,87 and they are much easier to defeat then the snappers...

Mmm, the drop rate is very low but you can find a group of them at 82,55. For those of you who don't have cosmos it is North East of the centre of Shimmering Flats, right against the outside. There is an end of a ship sticking out and thats what the tortoises and Snappers are surrounding.

It might take you awhile but its worth it in the end. Anywho, Good Luck, hope I help someone.

i think the reason everyones getting annoyed by this quest is cuz theyre killing the wrong turtles, u wanna kill the "Sparkleshell Tortoise's" and most of the turtles on the map are Snappers, and there are also some Borer's to, niether of those have a very high drop rate for the shells, i was getting around 10%for each of those...but i was getting around 30% for the tortoises

the tortoises are located in the northeast part of the shimmering flats(sorry forget to get corrds, somewhere around 70,60...in that area

1.&nbsp Get the quest and head to the northeastern part of the map.&nbsp You're looking for a big boat in the middle of the sand.&nbsp Can't miss it.

2.&nbsp Hang out here and kill snappers (they drop the most) or the regular tortoises.&nbsp Snappers are 34-35 and the others are 30-31.

Good drop rate and I'm level 37.&nbsp Any level 32-35 should have no problem as the turtles do not mob you.&nbsp They won't attack unless you do.&nbsp Occassionally I had a vulture join in but I went away from the boat.&nbsp You stay close to the boat, this won't happen.&nbsp Easy.

I soloed with my priest lvl 31 , exp was 200-250exp per kill which was extremely good. Like someone said , kill those turtles between exit of Thousand Needles & entrance of Shimmering Flats.

I did almost half of my exp bar just by doing 3 quests. The point of the reward is that u grind a lot ~ lots of green + good exp. Nice.

Go to the north part of shimmering flats and look for 30-31 lvl turtles. I spent hours killing higher level ones in the south, but it's these that give you the shells. Drop rate was about 75% on these.

I actually think I got around 45% drop rate I only killed 19 or 20 of the turtles and got my shells. I found that the best place to kill is near the Shimmering Flats border with the rest of 1,000 Needles.

This is my 2nd or 3rd hour on this quest... I've finished most of the other 1k Needles quests already.. but this one just refuses to let me finish. The drop rate is horrible... period. My advice, bring a friend that isnt on the quest, set your looting to allow u to pick up the drops, and kill 1000+ turtles... Is that why they call it 1000 needles?

This quest is so frustrating, at the beginning i had no problems at all i got about 5 in 7-9 kills but then it all went downhill.
When i finally found one of the level 30-31 ones it refused to drop so i had to actually kill ALOT of level 34-35 to get all the quest items and i was level 31 and pet 30.

All the other quests in this area have reasonable drop rates, but this drop rate is painful after the others, so be patient. Just doing turtle shells and nothing else took me around 40 minutes. The upside was that my last toon is a skinner, and it was so mindless I could read the news on my other monitor.

I've been trying for these suckers for 2 hours solid. The drop rates been reduced far below the 30% quoted on this site... probably since 2.3. I would conservatively estimate Ive killed 100 of these since I started the quest (amongst finishing the other quests) and gotten 8 shells.... so a drop rate of 5-20%. Spawn time I guess is over 10 minutes so god help you if someone else is in the area!!

Not worth your time, skip it and pickup the XP somewhere else.

I did this quest on two characters on Patch 2.4.2. The boat is NOT the best place.

I found that the lower level turtles near the northwestern entrance 70,60 had almost 20% drop after I'd killed over 50 turtles near the boat.

All of them are 30-31, so they are easier to kill anyway. Just have to watch out for other mobs in the area.
