Underbelly Whelp Scale (6)

Description

I need some underbelly scales from black dragon whelps to pay for the shoes Argus sent me from Goldshire. If you can get 6 of them for me, then I can pay Argus with some... and have enough left to fashion something for you.

Black dragon whelps are often flying around south of Lakeshire, but they like to wander. You might have to just keep an eye out and hunt them when you see them.

South of the lake along the road, they spawn individually and are easier to kill. North of the road between the lake and the road, there are many of them that spawn and will not be easy as level 17-18.

I found these fun to fight for some reason. Their fireballs do a lot of damage but they drop some scales and when you skin them, you can get hides or more scales.

Prime hunting area for these is 35,70 and east of that location along the lake.

I got all 6 drops within 10 minutes as of April 7, 2007.

In order to get the 'Baying of Gnolls' quest, which leads to 'Howling in the Hills', and 'Underbelly Whelp Scales' quest, you need to do 'The Price of Shoes' quest and 'Return to Verner'.

33,63 is where I started then went south into that valley, there's a bunch.

17 Mage, used 2 fireballs then two arcane missiles, usually killed them with getting hit about twice, seemed easiest.

usually about 1 out of every 4 dropped scales.

You can find the whelps outside lakeshire to either side, i suggest back over by the 5 corners nearest the lake, theres 2 valleys full of them, but there is also some up by the gnoll camps.&nbsp If you are a rogue, go in stealth and ambush them, which will bring them down to about half health. kick them to stop their firebreath, then sini strike and eviscerate and their dead. pretty random drop but i did this while doing other quests. toodles

U can usualy find them south of the bridge leading into redridge, if not then go to the place just in front of the barn where rogues pick practise locks. U can find spiders, boars, parrots and dragon wepplings there also.

The coords for this quest somewhat vary but to be more exact to a specific yet general location (34,67) as there are several whelps around the lyng area. Keep in mind that it takes several kills before u get all the scales as this is a 15% drop rate.

I found the drop rate to be totally erratic. When my mage did this quest it took over forty of the them to get the six. A couple of days later I ran my druid through and he got 6 out of 7.
I also ran a hunter through and from what I can recall he did at least 20 plus.

There is only single whelping just south of the flight master up on the hill and 6/7 times that Ive killed it, it dropped a green. Anyways, that was pretty cool and to find more groups of them, go southeast and youll run into a few, I got the scales on most of my kills.

These scales will simply not drop. I'm a lvl 21 hunter using aim shot, concussive shot, serpent sting and auto shot along with my pet (if that info is neccessary)

I have already killed about 25 whelps and they havnt dropped any scales...I am just outside&nbsp lakeshire killing them...am I doing something wrong?

The Road near alther's Mill have a better drop rate of the scales. OK here is the deal you need to have a group one on either side of lakeshire then begin the slaughter of the black dragon whelps ok.

I'm not all that thrilled with the rate at which these scales drop. I've killed 10 so far and only had 2 scales drop. And you also have to be careful as they spawn real close to one another and tend to wander. While I'd be fighting one another one would aggro on to me.
