Spotted Sunfish (10)

Description

Lake Everstill is famous for its spotted sunfish. There's always demand for them...and I'm running low!

Bring me a batch of 10 and I'll barter well for them. If you can't fish yourself, then...maybe you can get them off the murlocs!

This quest giver also sells a fishing pole that adds +5 to your fishing skill. Must be at least level 10 to use.

Currently, fishing skill required is 55.

Tried it at 49, and 50, then 51 - on the off chance it was 51+. At 52 actual skill and my dwarven fishing pole from Darkshore (+3) ... I was able to fish with no problems or assistance from the shiny bauble. Cheap enough investment to test it out...

Nice murloc camp at 40,44. Shouldn't take too long there.

Very nice Murloc Camp at 47,73. It's along the road you take to do alot of other quests, like Assesing the Threat (Redridge Mongrels/Poachers). Getting drops for the fish mainly off the Murloc Shorestrikers from here. Everything here has a chance to drop Murloc Fins, which is a quest called Murloc Poachers.

These will either drop off of Murloc to the east of Lakeshire or you can fish them if you have the time and skill...Easy quest...

If you have a good fishing skill (at least 80), this is a nice excuse to sit down and do some hardcore fishin'. You will catch a lot of mudsnappers and catfish here as well as the sunfish for the quest, however, expect to be here for awhile. I got x10 more "you lost your catch" messages here than any previous alliance fishing spot.

Using nightcrawlers seemed to help enormously if you're not hurting for money.

Just did this quest.. I'm level 16, with fishing 150, so I had no problems fishing the lake from the dock, and no fishies got away.. Had a couple of timeouts tho..
I caught 17 Raw longjaw mudsnappers and 29 raw Bristle whiskers while getting those darn 10 quest fishies..
So it's a quest doable either with bravada, for the fighters, or with patience..

Anyone know what the *minimum* fishing skill is to fish in this lake?

i'd go after the murlocs, but they keep eating me before i can get the fish off 'em.

Whilst killing Murlocs for their fins, I noticed that the Murlocs swimming in the deeper part of the water south of their enclave, started to drop the quest fish. I didn't even realise you had to fish for these. took me less than half an hour to complete BOTH quests. cant remember the drop rate but something in the region of 1 in 4. done at lvl 23 Hunter and lvl 23 pet - cotton tail.

This is a really good quest for fishers. Even if your skills are small when you start they get higher with the more you catch. Here's a tip. Buy lots of nightcrawlers: the fish eat them faster

If your fishing skill isnt up to the level needed to fish here, you can just hunt the murlocs for them on the other side of the bridge.
I found they dropped faster than it took me to catch them anyway.

I tried to fish for it and got 4 in 15min and gave up. So I went to get a murloc quest and first 4 I killed dropped it. I was surprised. I am lvl 22 warrior, but I use daggers to pullmurlocs one by one to the shore and voila!

Like another guy said, if your fishing isn't high enough to fish in the lake, or if you're frustrated with a low success rate, try killing Murlocs on the south shore of the lake. They dropped 10 fish very quickly for me, plus they spawn quickly and you get decent XP per kill.

I would guess about one in 3 or 4 Murlocs drop a fish.

I soloed this at 16 fighting murlocs because my fishing skill was too low, I only died once and that is because my internet kicked me off. Should be easy at the reccomended level if you can't fish.

So, going into this quest, I was level 50 fishing with the Strong Fishing Rod and a bunch of nightcrawlers. I got up to level 50 fishing in stormwind, but upgraded a level (journeyman or whatever) before trying this.
At the end, I was level 95 fishing. Only 10 of these fish are sunfish, so there was a lot of the other "bad fish." In my case, at least 40, as some fish didn't even get me a skill increase. Be prepared for your patience to be tested. Around about level 85, the sunfish started coming thick and fast, so maybe 85 + 55 (fishing rod & nightcrawlers) is the best level for these fish? That would be my guess.
And I also pulled out a Bandit Jerkin of Intelligence, a Shadowgem and a 19 Pound Catfish. Any hints on what to do with the catfish, appreciated. I thought about using it to hit people with, but it turns out it's not very good for that. But this loot pays for my gryphon rides and new fishing rod.
I didn't want to kill murlocs, as I truly hate even the sight, let alone the sound, of them, so took to fishing instead. Plus, I have a feeling that WoW is the type of game to reward mad skills at stuff like fishing & cooking, so I'm happy to sow some seeds and reap them later on.

Edit - made some things clearer, and removed a few threatening references to the UN.
Edit - included the full name of the Jerkin.

I fished at the west pier in Lakeshire.
Fishing skill at start: 136
Fishing skill at finish: 150
No +Fishing skill items used.

The drop percentage was 23%, not counting failed castings such as "Fish got away" and timed out casts.
I estimate that failed castings happened 10-15% of the time.

Fish caught:
26 Raw Bristle Whisker Catfish
17 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper
10 Spotted Sunfish

* In summary: It took about 50 castings to finish the quest for me.

The murlocs at the 48,73 camp are a bit lower level than the ones at the 40,44 camp. My 16 Rogue [turned 17 during the quest] had some troubles [3-4 deaths] with the one up top, but the lower one was no problem.

EDIT: Go for the shorestrikers instead of the tidecallers... the tidecallers can use frost bolt and heal.
