Dark Ceremony

Rok Orhan in Camp Mojache wants you to find a Gordunni Orb.
Gordunni Orb

Description

These seem to be plans for some sort of dark ceremony, <name>. From what I can make out, this ritual is conducted by the Gordunni mage-lords.

Find one of these mage-lords, and from him, gather an orb.

The orb of a mage contains great power, and will help us discover more about this ceremony and the magic that the Gordunni wield.

Is it bugged in 2.3? I honestly killed 70+ Mage-Lords and not one dropped it. For a 6% drop-rate that's a little ridiculous.

I gave up just now, I wouldn't suggest going out of your way to find it.

Ok, after 2 hours of killing everything around the ruins where the mage-lords spawn, i started to count my kills :P
currently 236 mage-lords killed, and even more of all the others! gotten 2 lvls here only trying to get this orb lol, wtf?
this just cant be right, with 3.20% drop chance i should have gotten 1 each 32 mage-lords or so. so i should have gotten about 12-13 orbs so far :D but nada! but i did get 1 epic, and 4 blues, and tons of cash and xp... but still this is just stupid!
I can understand some bad luck, but this is just not right!

I killed *ALOT* of mage-lords around the ruins of Isildien with not a single drop. Some of the ogres seem to spawn random mage-lords/warlocks/shaman so I killed absolutely everything I could see to get more spawns. Still no luck. I went into the cavern and mined some ores aswell as killing more mage-lords - still not a single drop - I must have killed between 50 and 60 mage-lords.

Then I went up the ramp to the big ruin and circled it - the orb dropped on the 3rd or 4th mage-lord. Try doing that too - if you have problems - it may be a different drop rate for the mage-lords up there ?

the mobs share spawn points. So if you don't see many Mage-Lords start killing everything around there.

There were only 3 when i got there then I started killing all the battle masters and then alot of mage-lords started spawning.

The low drop rate that Thott indicates is because most people do not have this quest. I killed about 5-8 Mage lords before it dropped.

I had a horrible drop rate on this quest. I killed 48 mage-lords, but to no avail, so I gave up. Later that night I decided to try my luck again and returned to the ruins. I killed one mage-lord and got the orb first try. It seems that if you're searching rabidly for the orb, it won't drop. My advice is to take a break and go back later if you're having trouble, and you'll probably have much better results.

I found this quest to be ridiculously easy at level 44 (affliction warlock). I picked off the mage-lord guarding the ramp to the temple and then the guy doing the long patrol around the entrance. Inside you will find several mage-lords. It's very easy to take down everyone inside, one at a time. After cleaning out the mobs inside with no orb, I went back outside where I found that the first mage-lord that I had killed (guarding ramp) had respawned. This time he had the orb. Very quick completion time with this one combined with the final "ogres of feralas" quest.

Couldn't find the orb until three mage-lord kills after finishing The Ogres of Feralas quest that also comes from and goes back to Rok Orhan. Might just be a coincidence but worth a shot after some of the terrible drops others have been getting. Got 8000xp for the two on return.

This quest isn't bugged, I got the gordunni orb off the second level 46 mage-lord I fought. I took it out right in the ruins of isildien took me all of 5 minutes. I've heard that the orb only drops off of level 46 mage-lords so that may be the problem.

Honestly, nothing posted here has shown a bug of any sort exists. Perhaps the earlier posts gave everyone the impression the drop rate is high, but if you look at the Gordunni Orb's drop rate, it is actually only 7% (as I type this, there are 18,799 documented kills on wowhead, so it's probably fairly accurate). You would in fact be quite lucky to receive it on your first or second kill.

It is not improbable for a streak of 35 kills without a drop to occur when the drop rate is only 7%. In fact, it is a 0.93^35 = 0.078868 or approximately 7.89% chance you'll kill 35 mage-lords without a drop. It is actually more probable to have a dry streak of 35 than for the orb to drop on the first kill.

A streak of 70 without a drop is indeed quite unlikely but not impossible. Ignoring the fact it might have been exaggerated, one single story of an improbable 0.62% chance does not indicate a bug exists. At best it suggests one exists, although I highly doubt it. Further testing would need to be done. One would need to repeatedly destroy the orbs with and without /script LeaveParty() and document the corresponding probabilities. I personally neither care enough nor have the patience to test this myself. Plus I completed the quest a few minutes ago.

If you want to know what I think (and I do admit guessing is pointless), Triggerclaw might have left a raid before questing, yet the game still considered his character to be in a raid. Perhaps the GM saw this and gave him the script command to leave the "ghost raid." If this were the case, the bug is actually a raid related bug and not quest specific. There is also the distinct possibility the GM was clueless and proposed a placebo.

Obviously I cannot completely rule out the possibility of a bug, but nothing presented here has really suggested it exists.
