Above and Beyond

Venture to Stratholme and destroy Baron Rivendare. Take his head and return to Duke Nicholas Zverenhoff.
Head of Baron Rivendare

Description

You display a natural aptitude for destruction and you follow orders. It is rare to see the two coexist. I am beginning to think that you may make an excellent vehicle of divine justice.

<Zverenhoff clasps his hands together in front of his face.>

Kel'Thuzad's errand boy rules over Stratholme. Prove to me that you are a champion - my champion. Destroy Baron Rivendare and return to me with his head.

The key to doing that in a 5 man is to only pull the first one, and pull it to the very back. Then when an add wanders in you let it run to the back and then shackle it. Kill the add after the first one is done. After you kill the add you rest for mana. You always let them wander in on their own in a 5 man, unless you are very comfortable about pulling. Every one of the abominations will wander in on it's own, so you only need to pull the first one. Always stay at the back of entryway by the gate. This way when you kill the last Abom and Rammstien comes out (his aggro range is huge), you have enough time to let the casters regain mana before he charges the group.

After Rammstien dies (try to remain back in the entryway still) the army of non-elite undead come after the group, AoE them, using any way you can to make them all stay in one spot. Warriors have Challenging Shout, Tauren have War Stomp, and Mages have that Frost Nova. Just make them all stay still for the AoE and you'll be fine.

As soon as those guys die the REAL hard part comes. If you've never fought the 5 elite guards in a 5 man group before, then this will be very difficult. The key is to hold off on AoE until the tank establishes aggro on all the guards. Once the tank has the aggro under control you can AoE to your heart's content. A good idea is for the Mage to do the Frost Nova followed by Arcan Explosion until he's out of mana.

Thus ends the Slaughterhouse Courtyard fun.

Performing the quest Above and Beyond in conjunction with 5 manning Riverdare will result in the 60th level questgiver with high dps and moderate hitpoints appearing to help you kill the baron.

The medallion of faith can be picked up in a raid group during a live side strat run beforehand. The questgiver for above and beyond is found in the chapel near the dead side entrance.

Just did it today, alliance side:

Group: All 60s -- Mage, Priest, Warrior, Paladin and Rogue

Baron startegy: Everybody is armed with a shadow protection potion and have one mana/health pot ready.

Paladin: Cocentration aura up to make sure priest/paladin heals don't get broken with constant damage. Job is to heal MT(Main Tank) and attack baron

Rogue: Unload as much damage as possible to baron

Mage: CC (crowd control) skeletons, make sure they all bunch up together so you don't waste mana also put dampen magic (improved) on everybody. Weakens the damage even more.

Priest: Shadow Protection buff and main healer. Keeps maintank alive

Warrior: Uses sunder and keeps aggro on him. Main tank.

Important part is to let the warrior build up aggro. Don't all attack at the same time. Wait for a few secs for baron to cocentrate on MT and then start fighting.

Best of luck.

After reading all these comments, I was really worried about trying Baron in a five-man. We managed to take him down first try tonight, though, with the following group:

55 Priest (Holy/Disc)
60 Priest (Shadow)
60 Paladin
60 Mage (Frost)
60 Warrior (31/5/15 spec)

Yeah, I didn't think it was going to work either, but luck was on our side!

Burned 5 Shadow Protection potions, 5 Mana pots, and 2 Combat Healing Potions between us.

A good piece of advice for warriors, and part of the reason we won, is this: Keep your sword and 1-hander on for maybe the first half of the fight, while you keep aggro on you. After that, switch to a 2-hander, use Recklessness, and DPS him down in Battle Stance.

Hope the advice helps!

the shadow protection potions were really helpful. also if someone has the medallion of faith quest, turn it in right at the beginning. it will summon an NPC to help fight the baron. we did this easily with a warrior, hunter, rogue, mage and priest - all 60s. the warrior died halfway through the fight and we still managed to take him down.

... it aint about how the boss is killed.. he's a cakewalk.
The deal with the above and beyond quest is:

Get the archivist quest, finish it and hand it in... then go Strat Scarlet again and kill end boss. This time he wont just drop items and stuff. He also drops his head which is... daadaaaa
the queststarter for Above and beyond.
Handing in that head at LHC will give you a new quest and ultimately lead to the nice blue rewards given at the end...

Just go with 4 friends so you are sure that you are able to do 2 more runs without having to search for party members.

In total getting the blue items so be posible in about 5-6 hours (2 scarlet runs and 1 baron run)

You don't need shadow pots or healing pots,or even a warrior for that matter. We did the 45 min run without a warrior in 43 minutes. We had priest, pally, mage, rogue and hunter(me). We had the pally tank with his extra power against undead and my turtle was OT.The Baron is not hard at all.Just kill the skelies quick so they dont heal him and he goes down easy.If you dont have a mage to aoe skelies use water in turns to kill them fast. The skelies will go for the healer quick,so make sure ranged dps has waters on them since they will be closer to healer anyway.Easiest way to fight Baron is to keep him in 1 corner and all ranged dps stay in far corner so not in Baron's aura.If the healer and ranged dps stay out of aura and you kill skelies quick,he will go down fast and easy.I've killed Baron about 30-40 times and never seen the mount drop(took that many times to get my BS pants to drop).BTW Strat Ud is easily the best place for a hunter to be when trying to gear up and get weapons.I got 2 Boneslicing Hatchets,BS Bracers,BS Boots and BS Pants(finally) all from there and improved my dps significantly just from those drops. Also the Baron's cloak is great for hunters and rogues, but that never dropped for me,so I use the shadow prowler cloak for now until I decide to run Ud again, but tired of strat now,so maybe later :)

I was finnaly in a group(5man) that manged to kill him.

Priest 59 (leveld to 60 when we killed Ramstien)
Warrior 60
Me, Paladin 60
Rogue 60
Hunter 60

As you can see the lack of aoe, we made so everyone collected Holy Water for the skellies, as a Paladin I dont have consecration so the only class aoe we had was the hunter arrow thingi and my holy wrath that are both on 1min cooldowns.
The fight we all buffed with shadow protection potions, if you have greater shadow protetcion it would have been beter as the potion absorbs the damage and casts can be made without interuption.
Remember that the potion put all healing pots on a 2 min cooldown aswell.

The fight went pretty smoothly were we took turn in using the holywater(it has a very short distance to cast it in btw) and noticed that one water killed a group of skellies at once, so is just to gang them up and use it.

The guy from the church does help abit, but we didnt use him this time.

One thing is to keep in mind is for the warrior to have alot of hp as the baron does 3k+ crits of mortalstrikes and hits can come frequently.

Answers: You start with "The Archivist" then "The Truth Comes Crashing Down" then do "Above and Beyond" and then "Lord Maxwell Tyrosus (Elite)"

Then there is "The Argent Hold (Elite)" which is just open a chest...

And no it's not only for Horde, and all quest are only doable in 5 man (not raid)

I had the best 5-man group ive ever had but when we made it to the abominations and killed all but one of them they all respawned. We proceed to do it again, somewhere during the end of killing hte second group we killed the last mob of the original group of abominations and Ramstien spawned, and the final mob of the second group also aggroed. Sometime during the fight a second abomination respawn occured. While we were able to kill Ramstien and open the door to the Baron's ziggurat we wiped on both the third abomination group and the mass of undead that attack after Ramstien goes down. A GM would later say that this is a know glitch - essentially tough luck try again. I'm confident our group woulda finished the quest without the bug. What a shame, i do hope this doesnt happen to others and that it has since been fixed, but knowing blizz...

I'm not sure if the ppl that has completed this has the same problem with me, but our group can't get through the bile spewer (the one where the gate closes when you pulled one of them), every minute or two, one of them wandered inside the hall and add while we were still on the first mob... we shackled and keep killing the first one until the third mob come a few second later >.<, keep going on like that until all healer ran out of mana and we wiped. We had a good group of war, priest, druid, hunter and warlock. Didn't die once on the 5 man strat live and didn't in this one too until the bile spewer >.< Don't know how to do it when they keep going in on interval like that.
