Before you make this commitment, realize for armorsmith, I am talking a major time commitment to this profession, if I counted right a grand total of 10 quests, requiring approx 200-300 bars of mithril, 20+bars of rare true silver, a heart of fire (which cost me 5 gold at the auction), 4-6 black pearls, thick leather, aquamarine, etc. The black pearls and thick leather may also cost you if purchased at the auction.

How to become an Armorsmith:
When you have your Blacksmith skills up to a certain value, "expert"&nbsp I think, when you talk to the BS trainer in IF choices will pop up that say- tell me more about "weaponsmith" or "armorsmith". (I made some additions to previous thottbot.com posts.) And it's accurate.

For Armorsmith you:
1. Declare Armorsmith
2. You will be directed to the other Dwarf by the forge about the specifics of being an Armorsmith. He gives you a quest requiring that you make 7 items: 4 ornate mithril helmits, 2 ornate mithril boots, 1 ornate mithril breast plate. But guess what?&nbsp This quest is the tip of the iceburg. You don't have the recipes for these items, they are not on the BS training list, and he does not tell you where to go or who to talk to!
3. You talk to&nbsp Hank the Hammer&nbsp in Stormwind and complete his quest, which will open up the quest to talk to the guy in BB (by the forge outside) part of the Mithril order.
4. Talk to guy in BB who then directs you to talk to a Dwarf out in the wilderness of STV. (north of the ogre mound)
5.Gavan (in the wilderness) will have 3 quests, to get a certain amount of mithril bars, iron bars, citrine, ect. Each quest you complete gives you a recipe.
6. He will then direct you to his student (by the forge inside) studying in Gadgetzan.
7. This student will have 3 more quests, that give you more recipes. After each quest you get more recipes. At this point you are still missing the ornate mithril helmit recipe.
8. So you go to Gadgetstan, in Tanaris and talk to the Night Elf at the Forge in town. He has 3 quests which get you more recipes. One of those is the ornate mithril helmit.
9. After all of this you'll have all the recipes you need to complete the original quest: The Art of Armorsmith.
10. Now it's JUST a matter of working your tail off collecting more raw material to make the 7 items. When all is said and done you get approx 3900 XP (**) for the original quest- The Art of Armorsmith, and a pat on the back, besides having some top notch armor. The the potential to make more.

**Each of the 10 quests has XP ranging from 700 to 2900 XP. The quest giver keeps all of the items you make so your not making any $$ off of them.

To start with, kudos to Huntn for posting a relatively comprehensive "walkthrough" for this quest. The following post is an add-on to his post and will be borrowing liberally from some of his notes.

If you wish to go down the path of Armorsmith, ensure that you have the following items:
(1) Patience
(2) More Patience
(3) Lots of Cash or
(4) More Patience.

My attempts at irony aside, to be an Armorsmith:

(1) It is *advisable* (meaning its not crucial) to have your Blacksmith skill at 220 or thereabouts as you have to learn some recipes from a goblin in Booty Bay and he will only teach you if your skill is 230 or thereabouts. However, bear in mind that your skills will be rising when you craft some of the items involved in this quest.
(2) Talk to Expert Blacksmith Trainer in Ironforge at 210 skill in blacksmith.
(3) He will direct you to Grumnus Steelshaper standing by the Great Forge in Ironforge who gives you a quest to make the following items:
(a) Ornate Mithril Helmets X 4 (16 Mithril Bars X 4, 2 Truesilver Bar x 4, Solid Grinding Stone X 4, 4 Black Pearls X 4)
(b) Ornate Mithril Boots X 2 (14 Mithril Bars X 2, 2 Truesilver Bar x 2, 4 Thick Leather x 2, Solid Grinding Stone x 2, Aquamarine X 2)
(c) Ornate Mithril Breast Plate X 1 (16 Mithril Bars, 6 Truesilver, Heart of Fire, Solid Grinding Stone)
At which point you will be stumped as you neither have the recipes/know how to craft them nor do you know where to head to...till Anonymous's guides came along.
(4)Take the griff/train to Stormwind City ("SW") to look&nbsp for an NPC by the name of Hank the Hammer in the Dwarven District right by the forge area in SW. He will give you a quest called "The Origins of Smithing" which requires you to craft 6 Golden Scale Bracers [30 Steel Bars, 12 Heavy Grinding Stones (translates to 36 Heavy Stones)]. Once completed, he will give you a quest to see another NPC by the name of McGavan in Booty Bay.
(5) Talk to McGavan who then gives you a quest called "The Mithril Order" to talk to Galvan the Ancient. ("Galvan") Galvan is between Zul Gurub and the Mosh'Ogg Ogre mound in STV. Cosmos locs are 50,21.
NOTE : Before you start tramping out of Booty Bay, try and learn the following recipes from Brikk Keencraft - Mithril Coif and Heavy Mithril Breastplate. (230 blacksmith skill pre-requisite)
(6) Once you meet Galvan, he will give you 3 quests:
(a) Bring 40 Mithril Bars, 5 True Silver to him. ("The Great Silver Deceiver")
(b) Bring 40 Mithril Bars, 40 Iron Bars to him. ("Smelt On, Smelt Off")
(c) Bring 40 Mithril Bars, 4 Citrine to him. ("The Art of Imbue")
Completing each quest will allow you to learn more recipes needed to complete your ultimate quest. Once all quests are done, speak to Galvan again and he will then direct you to see another NPC by the name of Trenton Lighthammer in the town of Gadgetzan in Tanaris. ("Galvan's Finest Pupil") Trenton is by a forge in the town of Gadgetzan.
(7) Once you meet Trenton, he will give you 3 quests:
(a) A Good Head on Your Shoulders which requires crafting Mithril Coifs X 2 (10 Mithril Bars x 2, 6 Mageweave x 2), Ornate Mithril Shoulder x 1. (12 Mithril Bars, 1 Truesilver, 6 Thick Leather)
(b) The World at Your Feet which requires crafting Heavy Mithril Boots X 2 (14 Mithril Bars x 2, 4 Thick Leather x 2), Ornate Mithril Pants X 1. (12 Mithril Bars, 1 Truesilver, 1 Solid Grinding Stone, 1 Aquamarine)
(c) The Mithril Kid which requires crafting Heavy Mithril Breastplate X 2 (16 Mithril Bars X 2), Ornate Mithril Gloves X 1. (10 Mithril Bars, 6 Mageweave Cloth, 1 Truesilver, 1 Solid Grinding Stone)
When you complete each quest, you will be taught more recipes wherein one of it is the ornate mithril helmet recipe.
(8) Armed with all the recipes, then its back to Ironforge to complete "The Art of the Armorsmith". Read note (3) again for ingredients required to craft the items. If you have the items, craft away and voila quest is complete.
(9) Turn in the quest. Congratulations! You are an Armorsmith and will be able to learn 2 more recipes Truesilver Breastplate and Truesilver Gauntlet. (Blue Items but cost wise are pretty expensive to craft)

Well, hope this helps.

Total mats for the entire quest line:

286 Mithril Bars
70 Iron Bars
25 Truesilver Bars
30 Coal
36 Heavy Stone
36 Solid Stone
18 Mageweave Cloth
14 Thick Leather
4 Citrine
2 Aquamarine
1 Heart of Fire

I strongly reccommend you either get friends and guildmates to help contribute mats or buying some Mithril off the auction house otherwise you'll be on this questline forever. Aside from forging legendaries, this is probably one the most expensive questlines in mat costs in the entire game - and to be perfectly honest, it's largely not worth it without getting some good world-drop patterns unless your guild is going to funnel you the mats to get reputation so you can craft resist armor for them.

For what it's worth, I made a list of everything needed to learn the plans to make the Ornate Mithril items. If you've never done any of the Mithril Order quests this is *everything* you'll need to have. There are 6 Ornate Mithril plans in all, the first 3 require turning in only raw materials, then the next 3 need items made with the first set of plans. Then finally you get the plans to make the items actually requireed to become a full Armorsmith. Here's the list for all of that, this is for all 6 Ornate plans and all the items needed for the Armorsmith quest:

GRAND TOTAL ITEMS NEEDED FOR ARMORSMITH:
Iron Bar: 40
Mithril Bar: 342
Truesilver Bar: 26
Solid Grinding Stone: 9 (36 Solid Stone)
Thick Leather: 22
Mageweave Cloth: 18
Black Pearl: 4
Citrine: 4
Aquamarine: 3
Heart of Fire: 1

This includes the raw materials needed for 3 of the plan's quests and makes the following items:
Ornate Mithril Helm x4, Mithril Coif x2, Ornate Mithril Shoulder x1, Ornate Mithril Breastplate x1, Heavy Mithril Breastplatex2, Ornate Mithril Gloves x1, Ornate Mithril Boots x2, Heavy Mithril Boots x2, Ornate Mithril Pants x1

Note: Hank the Hammer wants 6 Golden Scale Bracers before he indroduces the quest giver for the plans. This indirectly adds Steel Bar x30 and Heavy Grinding Stone x12 (36 Heavy Stone) to the needed mats.

(edit)
**COMPLETED**
I hope this helps you all, I am writing it as I do it... prepare yourself. I will continue to edit this post as I complete more of the quests.

Once reaching 200 blacksmithing any smith trainer will give you 2 new options. One flags you for weaponsmith the other armorsmith. I chose Armorsmith *cringe*

I was intructed to speak a dwarf in IF at the great forge. Will edit the names later... The left one is for weaponsmith, right for armor. You must be lv 40 to start this quest. The guy on the right said I need to acquire the following to prove my worth:

4 Ornate Mithril Helms
2 Ornate Mithril Boots
1 Ornate Mithril Breastplate

Last line " you do know how to make those right, Ergomas?"

Umm no...

So you travel to Stormwind in the dwarven district and find a Human hank the hammer. He tells you to prove your worth to him. He requests that you create him (6) Golden Scale Bracers.

5 Steel bars each and 2 heavy grinding stones.

Total for this:

30 iron bars 30 coal and 12 heavy grinding stones.

3150 exp gained, pattern received Golden Scale Gauntlets, and a trinket with 50AC.

Sends you to Booty Bay to see another person standing outside the smithing area in BB. McGaven i think. He takes the trinket gives you some exp and sends you to Galven the Ancient. (50,20 on cosmos map)

He gives you 3 quests:

Smelt On, Smelt off.

He wants 40 iron bars 40 mithril bars

reward: Recipe Ornate Mithril Pants

next

Art of Embue

40 Mithril Bars 4 Cintrine

reward: Recipe Ornate Mithril Shoulders

last

The Great Silver Deciever

40 mithril bars and 5 truesilver bars

Reward: Orante Mithril Gloves

Once you complete these quests you are given:

Signet of Expertise

Instead of wasting all your time running around and doing those quests.... do what I did.&nbsp Find someone who can make the ornate items and then get the materials and have them make the items needed to complete the quest.&nbsp Or you can just buy the items at the auction house.&nbsp It will save you a fortune in time and money.&nbsp I completed the quest in 10 minutes! ok, here's what i figured out. before u can make ornate mithril helm, ornate mithril boots and ornate mithril breastplate, u have to finish the quests from trenton lighthammer first in gadgetzan in order to get the plans for the above quest items needed.

QUESTS FROM TRENTON LIGHTHAMMER IN GADGETZAN:
* The Mithril Kid
&nbsp - 2 heavy mithril breastplate - taught by Brikk Keencraft (goblin) in Booty Bay - needs 230 Blacksmithing skill
&nbsp - 1 ornate mithril gloves - quest reward from Galvan the Ancient somewhere in STV (The Great Silver Deceiver)

* A Good Head on Your Shoulders
&nbsp - 2 mithril coif - taught by Brikk Keencraft (goblin) in Booty Bay - needs 230 Blacksmithing skill
&nbsp - 1 ornate mithril shoulder - quest reward from Galvan the Ancient somewhere in STV (The Art of the Imbue) needs 225 blacksmithing skill

*The World at Your Feet
&nbsp - 2 heavy mithril boots - taught by Brikk Keencraft (goblin) in Booty Bay - needs 235 Blacksmithing skill
&nbsp - 1 ornate mithril pants - quest reward from Galvan the Ancient somewhere in STV (Smelt On, Smelt Off)

After completing all these quests, u can do The Art of Armorsmith already by making the quest items from the quest rewards.
* The Art of Armorsmith
&nbsp - 4 ornate mithril helm - plans can be learned by completing A Good Head on Your Shoulders
&nbsp - 2 ornate mithril boots - plans can be learned by completing The World at Your Feet
&nbsp - 1 ornate mithril breastplate - plans can be learned by completing The Mithril Kid

**Some plans are quest reward that u still have to right click before learning it. While some are learned automatically when u completed a quest. Just check ur bags or your blacksmithing menu. :)
Hope it helps.

Here's what u need to complete all these quests:
* The Art of Armorsmith
&nbsp - 108 mithril bar, 16 truesilver bar, 4 thick leather, 5 solid grinding stone (20 solid stone), 4 black pearl, 1 heart of fire and 1 aquamarine

* The Mithril Kid
&nbsp - 42 mithril bar, 1 truesilver bar, 6 mageweave cloth and 1 solid grinding stone (4 solid stone)

* A Good Head on Your Shoulders
&nbsp - 32 mithril bar, 12 mageweave cloth and 6 thick leather

* The World at Your Feet
&nbsp - 40 mithril bar, 1 truesilver bar, 8 thick leather 1 solid grinding stone (4 solid stone) and 1 aquamarine

TOTAL OF:
&nbsp 232 mithril bar
&nbsp 19 truesilver bar
&nbsp 18 mageweave cloth
&nbsp 18 thick leather
&nbsp 7 solid grinding stone (28 solid stone)
&nbsp 4 black pearl
&nbsp 2 aquamarine
&nbsp 1 heart of fire

Good luck and have fun!

One thing that's not mentioned is that Hank the Hand won't talk to you unless you have 210 Blacksmithing, that caused a lot of confusion, especially considering the Armorsmithing quest is available at 200.

The shopping list for this quest below is wrong.&nbsp Unless I'm missing something, you dont need black pearls to make the ornate helmets.&nbsp Here's the updated list:

342 Mithril Bars
70 Iron Bars
30 Coal (to make the 30 steel bars)
26 Truesilver Bars

9 Solid Grinding Stones (36 Solid Stone)
12 Heavy Grinding Stone (36 Heavy Stone)
18 Mageweave Cloth
22 Thick Leather

4 Citrine
2 Aquamarine
1 Heart of Fire

If I'm wrong, feel free to update this, and if i find out I'm wrong, I'll post again.

Good Luck!
(this quest took me like 2 weeks to gather all the money to buy the mats)

Don't worry all budding armoursmiths, the rewards are worthwhile. Almost all high level epic plans for armour REQUIRE Armoursmithing:
Plans include:
White Soul Helm
Stronghold Gauntlets
Invulnerable MAil
Lion Heart Helm
Helm of Great Chief
Fiery Chain Shoulders/Girdle
Enchanted Thorium Hel/Breast/Leggings
Dark Iron Helm/Legg.Gauntlet
Storm Gauntlets
Check them out on Thotbott's recipe page
Up to you to decide whether it is worth it, and most plans unfortunately come from drops (Though Enchant Thorium is a Quest). But good items can come out of your labour - and they do sell well in AH! Hardest blacksmithing path to take but it is worthwhile

Now you can respec from weaponsmith to armorsmith. It cost nothing but only gold. (110G total)

1) unlearn your corresponding weaponsmith "master" at Everlook of Winterspring (61,37). It costs 100G.
2) Alliance should looking for Weaponsmith trainer Ironus Coldsteel <Special Weapon Crafter> to unlearn weaponsmith.
Horde should go to Borgosh Corebender <Weaponsmith> at Orgrimmar. This step costs 10G.
3)Alliance: Then speak withMyolor Sunderfury (he stands right in the middle of the forge) he will let you choose to become weaponsmith again or turn to armorsmith. This is free and you will keep your skill level after respec.
(sry I dont know where is the conterpart horde NPC, but should be around the BS trainer)

If you are talking to the quest giver, but there is no option for this quest (but you can do all the other parts) then talk again to one of the dwarves in the forge and choose (again if necessary) "I wish to be an armorsmith" and it will then become an option on him. =)

Neither of the dwarves in the forge will give me the quests to start me on my path to weaponsmith or armorsmith. Nothing above their head. From what I read here, you need to be minimum lvl 40 and blacksmithing 210 or more. Well, I'm lvl 43 and BS is at 234. What gives? Is there a pre-quest I need to complete before this is even available?

i choose armoursmithing when i reached lvl 200 and after reading what it entailed i had second thoughts, it does say once u choose there's no going back but it is posssible at the start, before u go and speak to the guy in SW abonded the quest u got in IF and go back to the other guy who asked what path u choose u will then be able to change to weapon smithing.

also can any1 tell me if i need to be a cirtain character&nbsp lvl or lvl in BS to talk to the guy in SW as i cannot speak with him after accepting the quest in IF for ornate mithril stuff

I am not able to get "The Great Silver Deciever" or similarly named quest from Galvan in STV, for the Ornate Mithril Gloves plans (the quest where you hand him 40 mithril bars and 5 truesilver)

Ive done the 2 other quests for him, where you had to hand mithril, steel (or iron?) and citrine, but im not getting this quest...

I did the quest you get from the dwarf in IF Forge to craft some stuff for Loch Modan and Redridge, and also done the quest for the 6 bracers in SW

Am i missing any quests that needs to be done before you get the silver deciever quest ?

that walk through helped me a lot. I took up blacksmithing specifically for the trinket, and now that i have it i may go weapon smith. It costed me a lot of gold to get through the quest, seeing that my professions are blacksmithing and engineering. I now have the mithril insignia and all sorts of gnomish gadgets for the pvp. I got this quest at 210 blacksmithing and lvl 40. all you need to do is talk to the human hank by the forge in dwarven district of SW and he will ask you to make (6) golden scale bracers. this is the start to the series you need to learn the ornate plans

I paid 20g to buy the ornate mithril gear for this quest and turned it in to become an armorsmith. That looks quite a bit cheaper than this whole quest series and took about 10 minutes. You do still have to fly down to the guy in BB to go from 225 to 300. I guess if you are actually going to wear some of this gear, it would be worth it, but my focus was on getting to 300 BS and Honored with Thorium Brotherhood to begin making Dark Iron gear for my guild. Doing it this way took me about 8 hours to get to 300 and Honored with TB and cost about 600g total. My guess is that if you do it the slow way, you are going to spend about the same, because the vast majority of the cost is buying thorium bars for the plans from level 275-300.

I did what jdanner did only mined the mats to make the helms, boots and b. plate. I paid 5g for another smith to make them for me. I really see no point to all the ornate mithril stuff. They really arent that great of equipment so selling or making it to sell in AH...its not likely to sell when there's better equipment for the same price. Waste of time, unless you just want the Signet of the Order (the trinket that gives the hammer thing, and even then you only have to mine the ore and citrines).

I guess its just preference, but not doing the entire quest line saved me a lot of time and trouble.
