Rackmore's Golden Key

Description

Rackmore's log tells of how his ship was sailing for Feathermoon Stronghold when it was attacked by seafaring creatures. To prevent his treasure from falling into enemy hands, he hid his chest on Ranazjar Isle.

To open the chest requires two keys, a silver and a gold. These keys were lost, but if the keys and the chest are found, a treasure awaits!

This is a fab quest - nice dosh, nice items, fairly quick.

Walkthru:
Activate quest west of Ethel Rethor at the coast. There was a lvl 40 elite giant wandering around when I did it, so watch out. Kill Drysnap pincers by the wreckage (right by where u get quest) until u get the silver key. Head north along the coast and kill slitherblade sorceresses til u get the gold key (Those are the nagas that dropped the keys for me, maybe others drop them too). Long swim northwest to the bigger island. Go on the island from the east side and u probly only need kill 2-3 nagas to get to Rackmore's chest which is by a tree. If you are horde, activate the quest "Other fish to fry" in shadowprey village first, this can be completed on the way.

I did this with a 36warlock and I had rested bonus so 400-500 xp per monstie and 2800 xp per quest. Safe.

This is how it went down for me:

Gold Key: Slitherblade Naga - Sar'Theris Strand - 32,22 - after 1 kill
Silver Key: Drysnap Pincer - Sar'Theris Strand - 32,29 (under water) - after 4 kills
Chest: Ranazjar Isle - 29,8 (exactly)

There is also close to a 100% drop on Fishscales and Fish Oil, witch is good for Shaman's and their waterwalking/underwater breathing.
And the quest-reward, the shield "Captain Rackmore's Wheel" looks absolutely rediculous (L)

I killed drysnaps south of where the Rackmore's Log for a while (34,31) then went up north to kill naga on the island that has the chest (it's the same island in the Book of the Ancients quest). Once you have both keys, the chest is 29,8 (CTmod) under a tree at the north-east corner of the temple ruins. Completed the quest at 38 which granted 2800xp and no faction adjustment.

Just a note to hunters: the drysnap crawlers/pincers are found near the sunken boat, and they are classified as humanoids, not beasts. So if you're trying to use your tracking to find em, use track humanoid and you'll see em :)

I did the following quests along with this one:
  • Clam Bait
  • Other Fish to Fry
  • The Corruptor

Silver key from Drysnap Pincer.
Gold key from Slitherblade Myrmidon.

I collected the clam meat near the end, but collected a few pieces while killing stuff for the Other Fish to Fry quest.

Got out of the water just in time because I almost ran into the lvl 40 elite Deepstrider Searcher.

I am Ulysses Rackmore, captain of the Gallant. And this is the log of the last few days of my doomed ship.

We were sailing to Feathermoon Stronghold with a shipment of supplies when naga stormed the sides of the Gallant. We drove them back but we knew they'd return. Fearing the loss of my most precious belongings, I steered the Gallant to an island off the coast of Desolace, one with old, night elf ruins. And there I left my treasure chest.

My chest is one of ingenious design, and requires two keys to unlock, one gold and one silver. The first key, the silver key, I gave to my first mate, and I kept the gold.

But we were doomed to lose them. my key was lost during the next naga attack, and my first mate's was lost a day later when drysnap makrura assailed us and pulled him into the deep.

I am sure the naga and makrura have the keys. I am glad the two are enemies and will not share them.

After the makrura attack, we could see that the Gallant would not survive another. So I and the few surviving sailors abandoned my ship.

We are now ashore and will soon strike out for the town of Nigel's Point, but much danger lies between us and sanctuary, and I fear Desolace will consume us.

I write this now in hopes that someone will know our plight, and some day avenge us against the watery fiends who were our ruin.

Now, the drysnap makruras are just in the water by the log (out by the shipwreck...you don't need any water breathing devices...they even have a bubbly fissure for air)...I killed maybe 3 of them before the key dropped. Same with the nagas. They're on the way to and full on the island...I killed 2 and got the other key. The chest is at 30, 9 at the base of a tree. Be careful of the lvl 40 elite giant that roams the island from time to time, but this quest is beyond easy. Solo-able as long as you're within the level, or have bandages/pots.

This is a pretty simple quest. You can kill the makrura SW of the quest starting spot for the Silver Key, the Naga between the starting spot and the Island for the Gold Key, and then go unlock the chest to finish the quest. The drop rate on the keys is pretty good, it's some nice XP, some nice gold from the reward, and about 1g from vendoring the two items that are also rewarded.

In the diary, it states that the drysnaps (those oversized crabbish lobsters) took the silver key and the ---- (mermaid and mermen) took the gold key.
It took me about 6 drysnap kills to get the silver key and about the same number of kills on the warriors and princesses near the shore for the gold key.
The treasure is on the large island touching the upper left side of the map. Starting from the southern center tip of the island, head straight over the first small hill. There will be a tree to your left. The chest is above ground behind the tree.

Very fun, very easy, great reward, and the shield looks like a ship's steering wheel when you wear it. Very unique look!

Oh, and you get the quest by finding a book called Rackmore's log on the shore of the sea right near the shipwreck. There are a lot of barrels scattered there and the book is sitting on the shore.

After some misgivings, I solo'd this pair of quests with my lvl 32 gnome rogue.

I got Karnitol's Chest and decided to give it a shot simple as can be. Found the chest at 36,30, half buried in the sand next to the wrecked dinghy. Grabbed the book while I was there and started this quest.

Took a LOT of swimming around and believe me, the Deepdive Helmet was a godsend, but the gold key dropped from a Slitherskin Warrior after about 10-12 kills, and I got the silver key from a Drysnap Crawler after about the 5th one, give or take.

Getting the chest itself is about the trickiest part. For starters, and I don't know if the location moves around from person to person, but I wouldn't put it past Blizzard, I found it on the east/northeast side of Ranazjar Isle, almost directly east of the serpent statue. A good tactic (for a rogue anyway) is to sneak onto the isle from the west side, go behind the statue and over the hilly part until you see a tree sitting almost right against the foundation of the ruins. The chest is at the base of that tree...and there's usually at least 2 naga there, one of them being a lvl 35 Razortail. He won't wander far enough away that you can open the chest without him seeing you, so I decided to get cute with it. (Hey...it's a game, right? ::grin:: )

Distract...go for the chest...let him beat on you as you hammer the Continue button...Vanish...and voila! Before he knew his tail spikes from his elbow, I was halfway to shore. Hooah!

Biggest key, in my opinion, is patience. Take on the baddies one by one until you get the keys...find the chest...choose your moment...and make it count when you act. Won't be the fastest quest you've ever done, but it will get done.
