At the time of completing this quest I was a level 50 warrior. After minor deliberations concerning time and level efficiency, I determined the following mobs and path was best for someone of the mentioned level to complete this quest...

|-- Giant Egg --|
• Primitive/Savage Owlbeasts of the Hinterlands
-- Average of a 33.5% drop rate
-- https://classicdb.ch/?npc=2928 || https://classicdb.ch/?npc=2929

|-- Zesty Clam Meat --|
• Big-mouth Clams
-- I chose to get these from the Saltwater Snapjaw in the Hinterlands. They have approx a 40% drop rate of the Clams. The clams will always give you a Zesty Clam Meat with the possibility of a variety of pearls.
-- https://classicdb.ch/?npc=2505 [Saltwater Snapjaw] || https://classicdb.ch/?item=7973 [Bug-mouth Clam]

|-- Alterac Swiss --|
• Upon returning to the Kalimdor continent, I chose to make a quick stop off at Freewind Post in Thousand Needles. The Innkeeper Abeqwa for the Alterac Swiss.

At this point you can continue your short flight to Gadgetzan to complete your quest. This was mearly my method. I found this method to be very time and cost efficient for my level. While considering this, there are far more possibilities of completing this quest. I recommend everyone take a few minutes to ponder the best route for your solution to this quest.
• Giant Egg [https://classicdb.ch/?item=12207]
• Big-mouth Clam [https://classicdb.ch/?item=7973]
• Vendors for Alterac Swiss [https://classicdb.ch/?item=8932#z0z]

you can kill mobs in tanaris for the eggs and clam meat. the rate is about 40% but that beats flying to hinterlands or felwood. dont know why it would be suggested to do that.

1) Buy the cheese wherever you want to.
2) Kill the turtles in Tanaris for the clams.
3) Kill the roks around the giant bone in Tanaris for the eggs.

4) Kill the doggies around there as well. In fact, just AOE the whole area. They drop http://classicdb.ch/?item=12208 and this will be needed to raise your cooking skill from 225+ to 300.

I did this at 70 (mage) just so I could level up to get the blackened basilik skill.

Assuming you fish too, while you're in Tanaris be sure to head out to Steamwheedle and pick up http://classicdb.ch/?item=13939

Spotted Yellowtail are the most common "trash" fish you'll find pre-Outland, this recipe will take you right up to 295 cooking or so, and Tanaris is the only place you can buy it.

For the eggs, I just go grab them from the Roks in Tanaris. They're already there, have a decent drop rate, and are pretty much everywhere. You're already in the zone, so why not?

You don't have to leave Tanaris to gather the items required for completion of this quest.

zesty clam meat
Drops from the turtles at the shore of west Tanaris.

giant eggs
Drop from the rocs (birds) in Tanaris (center area). They are concentrated near the huge skeletons half burried by sand.

As of patch 2.01 this can be bought in Caverns of Time from the NPC called Galgrom (Provisioner).

If you are Alliance and are power-levelling fishing and cooking in parallel, you will need to do this quest once you have reached level 225 by fishing Mithril Head Trout from outside Stromgarde Keep. Before travelling to Tanaris to pick up this quest, get everything you need to complete it from The Hinterlands just around the corner:
  • Giant Eggs are dropped by all of the various Owlbeasts here (42-47)
  • Zesty Clam Meat is inside the Big-mouth Clams dropped by Gammerita and her Saltwater Snapjaw friends on the coast (48-50)
  • Alterac Swiss is sold by Truk Wildbeard, the bartender in Wildhammer Keep
Now you can go up the hill to the flight point at Aerie Peak and start the journey to Gadgetzan with everything already in hand!

You no longer have to be 40 to get this quest. I just got it at 35. You still need a cooking skill of 225, though. Of course, getting it at 35 is not that wonderful, when you have to be slightly higher to get the eggs. Bah!

Zesty Meat can easily be gotten from the loch ness type mobs around the npc that gives the artisan fishing quest at Theramore Isle, a bunch of tiny islands west of the isle, they range from level 39 to 43 (young whataretheycalled drop the shells less frequently than the higher ones, got me 10 in no time and 3 to spare for something else)

Completed the quest on May 15th with no problems. I did start cooking right after my cap was raised.
The Naga near Feathermoon Stronghold drop the clam meat. I ended up buying mine in the AH for a few silver. Got 10 of eggs from Owlbeasts in Hinterlands, purchased the other 2 at AH to save a trip back out there. Chesse is available in SW city at the cheese shop in the trade district (one road over from the gryp). Found later that Bartender in Windhammer Keep (Hinterlands) sells it also

There may be a way to prevent the cooking skill bug from happening. This is based on the following observation: When I first handed the quest in to Dirge, I checked my skills page and cooking said 225/300. The cap had gone up. I then hearthed back to IF to gather ingredients from the bank and cook there. When I began cooking at the Bronze kettle I noticed that my skill level was not increasing. When I checked my skills again it was re-capped at 225/225.

So try the following: When you first get the skill cap increase at quest hand-in, gather ingredients from the bank at Gadgetzan if you need to, but just in case I would have a few ingredients on hand at quest turn-in. Go to the nearest cooking fire to skill up at least a few skill points right away. This may prevent the cap from returning to 225 (can't say 228/225 for instance). I am kicking myself for not having tried this, as at the time the thought crossed my mind, but then I thought: the cap has increased! Surely it can't go revert to 225! Well, news flash: it can.

Try this and let me know if this helps!

Had to kill about 50 owlbeasts to get 12 eggs, not thereatest drop rate, and it was better on the 44-45 Primitives than on the 42-44 viscous ones.

Just to straighten things up: The cheese can be bought from any innkeeper in a just fairly high level area (Elwynn forest and such won't sell it), and this cheese also loots from all high-end humanoids and in huge amounts from supply crates in stratholme (but that may just be a little too high level). Oh and clams will drop from any like 35+ sea based mobs (nagas, turtles, murlocs etc.). And at last the eggs will loot from all mobs with feathers that are 20+ or something.

I realize that by saying what I am going to say.. many of you are gonna trash me and tell me Im a worthless player cause I had a hard time at this quest...

Here are the facts!
I just turned level 40 hunter. My pet is still a level 39 which means he doesnt have growl 6 yet. I am sure growl 6 would help since my cat cant keep the aggro off me. Hinterlands is not a place I should be. Everything here is lvl 42 and up. Yes there are owlbeast and yes they drop eggs.. but nothing close to what has been stated here. I need 12 eggs and after killing around 50 or so I gave up trying at 10 eggs. There are wolves EVERYWHERE which range from 42 to 45. At 40, a lvl 45 is red and HARD as heck. It is VERY hard not to get aggro from either the trolls, wolves, gryphons, etc etc...

I am not sure how all of you did this quest solo at level 35-40 but I would like to see it to believe it. Since I have been there and seen what is in store.. I am more confident to believe that some post here may have exagerated their abilities.

This is just to let those that are wanting to do this quest at level 35-40 to stay away from the hinterlands unless you have a friend that wouldnt mind helping you out.

Hopes this saves a few of you some trouble and pains in the lower extremities
