With enough crystals the bossmob of the Alliance can be summoned which is almost certainly a turning of the tide for the Alliance.

We certainly turned in at least 10 times and the quest giver still said he needs more, so I dont know exactly how many it takes to call the boss.

As of 2.0, this quest gives 5 Stormpike rep, 75 IF rep, and 18.75 alliance rep (will be rounded to either 18 or 19 in the combat log). You get the alliance rep regardless of your current standing with Ironforge, although if unless you are at 999/1000 Exalted with Ironforge, the alliance rep will not show up in your log.

There is a limit to how many of these can be turned in before the druids stop accepting more of them. If you are planning to loot these items, be sure to turn them in regularly or risk missing your chance. Once the maximum number has been reached, the druids will head off to summon Ivus, and that's the last you will see of them.

This quest is one of the best quests you can do to get reputation with both Stormpike Guard and the alliance factions. When you complete this quest, you are given reputation for Stormpike Guard and Ironforge. But if you are filled with exalted for Ironforge, you are given about half the reputation for all other alliance factions instead. So you can get exalted with all alliance factions in Alterac Valley and this quest is the fastest way to do it!

I have collected the crystals off horde corpses, but I am not sure about NPCs. Look at the page for Ivus for more info about summoning him.
