Hydrospawn Essence

Description

A <race> mage! How wonderous. I have not seen one of your kind for... oh what is it going on now? 500 years!

I have something that will quench your thirst, but first you must do a task for me.

<Lydros snickers.>

There is an anomaly in Eldre'Thalas. A water elemental has taken residence in the east wing. His presence must be catalogued!

Venture to the Warpwood Quarter and extract a portion of the elemental essence of the Hydrospawn. Return it to me and I shall teach you a useful cantrip.

I'm sure almost every mage wants to do this quest. 4200 mana over 30 seconds is invalueble. Here's my attempt at a detailed decription on how to obtain and complete the quest.

Navigating in Dire Maul (DM):
There are 3 sections of DM (North, East and West). Only 2 sections concern this quest, which is North and East. The questgiver is in the North, and the quest item is from the East. You will need a Crescent key to enter the North instance or a rog with max lock picking skill (Engineers, I have already tried blowing the doors up. Didn't work).

Upon entering DM from Feralas, you just need to follow the corridor till you reach a "T" path (you will notice a huge double wooden door at the T - Only graphics, cannot be opened). To the sides of the door, there are two slip-in entries. Go through both of them and it will bring you into a courtyard with ogres. Hugging the right wall will take into the east instance, left to west and straight across the courtyard is north.

Aggro range here is very small so its easy to slip past them. Dog patrols exist and they see through invis.

Step 1: Obtaining a Crescent Key https://classicdb.ch/item=35607
This is gotten from the east instance (entering from the courtyard). Immediately entering the instance, you see a non-aggro imp on your left. Speak to him and he will start running. Fight your way in the direction he ran to (right of entering the instance). Speak to him again, and he starts running. It goes on for a couple of times.

By hugging the right wall and killing everything in the way, enter the 2nd corridor (1st one takes&nbsp you out of the instance). Go all the way straight down the corridor downstairs and hug the right wall, killing everything in your way. Go upstairs and you should see the imp there again. Talking to him will trigger him to fight. He spawns little imps over time, so focus your dps on him and deal with the non-elite adds after.

Loot the key.

Step 2: Where's the questgiver?

This can be done solo without any means of invis. Upon entering the north instance, there is a group of 3 ogres to your left and 1 wandering ogre infront of you. If you see the 3 ogres, you should also see a ramp down near them. Wait for the wanderer to move away and head down the ramp. Jump off the left side of the ramp to avoid the 2nd group of ogres, and head down another ramp.

This will bring you to another door that needs the Crescent key. Through that, all the way, takes you to the library. Questgiver is straight ahead of you, 1st bookshelf to your left.

Step 3: Getting the Hydrospawn Essence.

Eastern instance, coming from courtyard zone-in, hug the right wall, through the 2nd corridor, 1st right into a hall filled with Satyr demons and plants. Kill your way along the left wall and take the left turn below the ramp. Kill along the left wall again and this will take you to a pool with hydrospawn in it.

He spawns little water elementals as well, but they despawn when Hydrospawn dies. So focus dps on him again. Immune to cold.

Step 4: Back to quest giver.

Sorry if this seems a little long. But I didn't do any DM runs prior to this quest. I'm sure many fellow mages are alike. I hope this gives you more help than you need.

Quest giver is in the Library area of the west wing-- you will need the key from the east wing to get there. If you enter through the north and have leet skills, you can get to the Library without aggro.

The mob you have to kill is back in the east wing, the water elemental.

As of Patch 1.12 (drums of war) you can still blink through the door, 60 mage, took about 4 tries, only aggroed the one mob to die in front of first door, very simple, read the threads above

This is now trainable in patch 2.0.1. The only reason to do this quest now is to avoid the training cost. Ultimately not worth it.

this is essential for all level 60 mages. it probably should have been listed with the mage quests, too.

you take the quest form DM library, accessable from west and north instances but the quest NPC, Hydrospawn, is in the east instance and is immune to frost.

took me about 20min to figure out how to blink through the door.&nbsp for those having a tough time, look at the door head on...not at an angle (which was my problem).&nbsp youll be able to see past the door through the crack..so aim for that opening.&nbsp hope that helps.

You CAN solo getting and turning in this quest.&nbsp Getting to the library in DM North is not impossible to do alone.&nbsp Without a key, I had to use a Powerful Seasforium Charge to get through the door.&nbsp Bring two! I brought two just in case, and that was a good thing, because there are two doors--one inside and one outside the instance--that require the crescent key.

However, getting to and killing the Hydrospawn solo would be really tricky.&nbsp I imagine you'd need an invisibility potion or two... and maybe bring a rogue or druid to stealth in with you to help in the fight.

I've been hearing some people trying to solo...

What happened to your guild?&nbsp Are they too busy to help you get some of the best water in the game, which you're gonna give to them if you do raids with them?&nbsp Is it just simply not worth their time?

If a guild has a couple mages who need this, it would be smart to help them.&nbsp Its not like helping a random person, its your guild!&nbsp If thats not good enough for them, join a different one.&nbsp I mean really...&nbsp the entire POINT of guilds is to do things EXACTLY like this!

I was exploring Dire Maul with my 70 mage, when I was surprised to find that this quest rewards you with 11g40s at level 70. So it is still worth doing today. :-)

Hydrospawn can quite easily be soloed.

It is indeed an essential mage quest. Luckily the Hydrospawn you need to kill is a very easy to kill and easily accessible mob. You (the mage) and two level 60 friends should be able to dispatch the Hydrospawn without too much trouble. I was able to kill it playing a friend's T2 rogue along with my mage friend's help.

For all that can't made it to jump on the ramp.

Try a diagonal jump, when running down jump on the left, and not facing the ramp and jumping on it.

No need of any invis potion.

Just did - it's definately possible. Just use first person camera and get your aim perfectly at the crack&nbsp on the left side of the door. Go up the ramp maybe a step or two max and then blink. Took a few tries but I eventually did it.

just to confirm once again that IT IS possible.

blinking through the inner library door still works as of 05/19/06. just have to allign yourself perfectly with the little crack on the left and take a few steps back.

as far as getting in the main entrance to dm north, still dying is by far the easiest, just die right at the door and resurrect behind it.

You can get to the water elemental without killing any mobs, just go to the back door of dm east and jump down off the ledge, hug the wall, go through the door and stay to your right and kill the bastard.

You can get to the Library without using invisibility potions.

You can get onto the left railing of the ramp in DM north by executing a diagonal jump (you can make this jump because you are jumping from a higher position on the ramp to a lower position on the ramp railing). Once you are on the railing, follow the ledge along the wall east until you see the ramp down. You will have to make a second diagonal jump to land on the railing of the ramp leading downward toward the library. Once you are there, jump down, unlock, go in.

I managed to get into the library after many failed attempts. The easiest is to jump onto the railing of the ramp that leads into the area with the dogs. As an undead mage, I could only jump on the lowest bit of the railing, so be careful that you enter the yard and aggro.

After I managed to jump onto the railing, I moved back up and jumped on the border alongside the wall. Just hug the wall and walk around until you've come to the ramp that leads into the library.

No blink, no potions, no buffs...

My mage could only get this quest at level 60 (I know this, as I was 59 when we entered DM West, got the library, quest was gray, when I dinged 60, quest was available)

So it looks like this one is 60 only, boys and girls :)

successful solo'd this without the key or any invisiblity pots. the way to blink through the door to get into the library is line yourself up directly in front of it. DO NOT STAND IN THE CORNER WHERE THE DOOR MEETS THE EDGE. STAND BACK PARTIALLY BEHIND THE EDGE CENTERED DIRECTLY ON THE CRACK. took me two tries. died once (on purpose)

I tried repeatedly to make the ramp jump with my Gnome Mage & failed. Although I'm not 100% sure it seems like taller races like Humans & Elves have an easier time with jumping.

If you have trouble making the jump onto the ramp's edge, go get an inviso potion & sneak around the bottom of the ramp instead.

WARNING about the inviso potion method... Occasionally the Ogre group at the bottom of the ramp has a dog. The dog will see right through the inviso potion. If there's a dog in the group you should abort the attempt & come back later. Give the instance a chance to reset & hopefully the dog will be gone.

See what I mean: http://www.scipie.com/images/wow-dm-dog.jpg

Good luck.&nbsp

Well, you can't raid Dire Maul, so you will have to do it with a single party. We completed this quest yesterday with a mage, a priest, a warlock, and a paladin.&nbsp Hydrospawn hits hard, but he's not really that difficult.

All the instructions above do still work. However I was moving around and blinking for 20mins before it finally worked.

Also don't confuse the door to blink through with the door that requires the cresent key outside the DM North instance. Simply pull a mob and die next to the door. Come back as ghost and walk through it. Then respawn.

Did they raise the height of the wall on the ramp?&nbsp I can't jump over the side.

Edit:

Nevermind, you have to jump at an angle down the slope.&nbsp This will let you jump on top of the rail, then fall down on to the rail next to the wall and walk around to the other door.

If you are an Engineer or can get one to come in the absence of a Rogue, that Powerful Seaforium Charge will open the Library door. Large Seaforium Charges do not work.

I was able to do this all alone, just have to wait for someone to open the DM North entrance door for you. I did not try the PSC on the entrance door.

Nice guide kaithoss and thanks.
