Description

My pet is almost done. Now I just need something to stuff it with.

Only the voodoo feathers from the trolls in the sunken temple will do. They go by the names Gasher, Mijan, Zolo, Hukku, Zul'lor, and Loro. Kill them. Kill them all.

This is no trivial task <name>, so I'll make it worth your while by giving you something of Niby's -- he probably doesn't need it anyhow.

Horde and alliance can do it, it's a class quest for Warlocks.

I personally chose the trinket. Both the robe and the scythe are really good for the level (and the scythe looks incredibly cool), but they can be replaced pretty quickly. The trinket is unique and very useful, if only situationally. It won't have an immediate impact on your warlock, but it pays off in the long run, IMO.

Lets talk about what to do on the quest now that everyone has posted their comments about what they think is the best quest reward.&nbsp Talk about beating a dead horse.

I came here to learn how to do the quest and only two people have even bothered to post questions / answers about the quest.

Please, if anyone has info on the quest, please post... such as how big the mobs are to get to the trolls, do two feathers always drop in one run, etc...

Thanks :D

As said more than enough times the Shard IS unique, BUT I honestly cannot find any good uses for it in endgame.

PvE raiding
1. If you are smart enought to get into a guild that actually raids 25-mans then you would know that wasting a dps trinket spot with that kinda crap is not wise. To use it you'd had to wear it all the time because you cannot change trinkets in combat
2. Using a VW in general at raids is very idiotic. It cant even hold aggro from healers and sacrificing it gives you a crappy buff
3. Who comes to raids whitout enough shards and most of all who the feck runs out of shards while raiding when there are nothing but mobs in the instance.

PvE Grinding
1. First of all, who the hell uses a VW?! If you are a demonology warlock you can use fellguard to keep aggro, Then again if you are an affliciton 'lock voidwalker won't be able to keep aggro and in case of destruction you will either sacrifice imp or if you dont have DS (demonic Sacrifice) Your VW won't be able to keep aggro from you.
2. Same as in PvE Grinding you shouldnt rally run out of shards nor mana and better trinkets are waaay easy to get to waste a spot on this.

PvP
1. The only function of VW in PvP is sacrifice which sounds pretty good, but then again wasting a perfectly good trinket spot for this is idiotic atleast.

Went back to get the trinket as a 70 Demonology Warlock. The ability to summon my voidwalker and sacrifice for the damage shield when I'm low on health and mana is awesome (even if only infrequently used).

Oh, and Fel Domination works with this trinket....0.5 sec cast Voidwalker = sexy.

Soloed the quest very easily. Just sent my felguard into each group, Seed of Corruption on each elite, then mopped up. Took about 25 minutes (I got completely lost and wound up wandering around for some time).

For those unfamiliar with ST, you want to go up to the top floor (Hall of the Cursed) and clear around the circle. Go down each set of stairs (3 on right side, 3 on left side) and kill the troll mini boss. Each set of stairs on the left has a platform with a pack of mobs and 2 exits. One exit will bring you back to the first floor, the other to the mini boss. If you find yourself going down more than a few stairs you are going the wrong way. Hope this description helps the people who haven't been to ST in a long time (or ever).

If you ask me, every single warlock who has posted here saying how the trinket is still useful at lvl 70 needs to adjust their playstyle a little. You should ALWAYS have as many shards as the situation you are in requires, be it a raid or some PvP. If you don't, go get some. One extra voidwalker won't help with those.

And in regards to solo farming. If you are farming mobs that are green or above, you can get a shard in an instant. If you don't know how to kill a single mob without a pet or with an imp out then you need to do some learning. If you are farming low-level content and can't get any more shards you are extremely poorly prepared and one voidwalker won't help for long.

Exactly. Later on towards end-game the trinket will still retain some marginal value as it will save you a soul shard and lots of mana. It's nice to have, but not a big deal.

It helps when grinding or with repeated boss attempts... or in the middle of a boss battle and your pet goes down, but you need more dps - or another off-tank for adds. Lots of neat little uses, but nothing major. Still through time it will hold it's value longer than either the scythe or robes.

The only reason not to take the shard is if you are levelling very quickly and just want something to replace your staff/robe for the moment.

Basically the choice is Abyssal Shard, Large brilliant shard, or large brilliant shard. (if your an enchanter).

Okay about the actual quest and to all who posted above drivel about reward... go back to eq.&nbsp Level 51 Warlock, its a pain to even get too instance.&nbsp You can solo too the hallway that holds about 12 mobs then best advice RUN sac vw hit healthstone use pot and if your lucky you will make it to far side of hallway and then die (dont worry you will have no problem identifying where you will need to do this on the way to the instance).&nbsp As soon as you enter instance in front of you are two openings one goes to the right and one up and to the left, take left stairs you will have to fight two mobs before you reach stairs (in view when you enter instance) you will have to fight two epics and a couple normal mobs on stairs, you will reach a landing with two witchdoctors and several slaves or whatever clear these mobs and you will see a hallway that leads to the first named troll.&nbsp Kill him he drops feather, go up stairs to upper hallway fight your way around to next opening go down to next landing, clear landing, go down hallway kill named troll, repeat.&nbsp Quest is not soloable period (unless you do at sixty at which point reward is fn useless).&nbsp Quest is major fn pain in the ass requires full group with at least one member 55+ you will encounter groups of 4 elites that must be killed in upper hallway to continue.&nbsp Reseting instance as described waaay above DOES NOT WORK I have 4 feathers and I did get three of them from same location but thats because diffrent mob spawned there once.&nbsp Casual gamers and freelanced groups beware if you are below 55 be prepared for many wipes and unless you have big $%^& your group will likely split up before you get all the feathers you need.&nbsp Enjoy, I didnt.........

I was 60 before this quest got out, so It's not a lvl 56-60 point of view, maybe something to keep in mind when you read my post.

Robe
Simply a no-no, it get replaced too fast with the ZG item, Felheart or Nemesis on high-end and, most important, I don't think it's worth it compared to the other two items!

Shem
Very nice, BUT! It totally depends on your build!
If you are demo specced, you gonna love and want this item, but if you are an affliction/destruction lock. You don't want it as bad.
(And about the shards.. I always have 30+ shards in my bags when I start, and NEVER below 10, thats when I start grinding, so about the shards issue... nah, lame.)

Demo specced:
0.5 sec cast for a new vw, sacrifice and voila, you have a better shield then paladins. and if you can get it for free, even better! summon a new vw to recast sacrifice as soon as the 30 seconds are over, and repeat.

Affliction specced:
I never use a vw unless you grind, I use succa/felhunter or imp specially imp when you have dark-pact, so no need for a free vw imho.

Destruction specced:
you most likely use succa maybe sometimes vw it's doubtfull, you may want the item here also.

Staff:
Not bad, you will soon replace it with a much better weapon, and you most likely will never use it for real pvp'ing, since you can't use your awsome offhand items, and your (mostly underestimated) spellstone, which just rox against all caster classes!

What did I choose?
I choose the staff, mostly because it looks cool.
you will replace all items sooner or later.
There are many better Trinkets in game, and remember equiping the trinket has a 1 minute cooldown!
So, it's not a very instant lifesaver.
you have to really plan to use it, and I rather use my +spelldmg and poly/fear breaking trinkets.

Guys, seriously, it's simple.&nbsp Get rid of the rightous BS here, and boil your needs/wants down to the below:

Staff = If you want short term looks, this is it.

Robe = If you want short term bump in stats (about 5 - 10 levels worth) this is it.

Trinket = If you want something that you can ALWAYS use, but may not always use, this is it.

Also, don't forget that with the expansion, new warlock abilities are being added.&nbsp My two cents is go with the trinket, because there just MIGHT be that spec where this trinket would be invaluable.&nbsp It would be a shame to have picked up a robe or staff that will DEFINITELY be replaced by level 70 and then be in a position that you wish you had picked the trinket...

The posts previously where they announced that this quest was soloable are on something nasty.
Im a 52 aff/des lock and i had a 70 priest with me, i died half a dozen times and priest died once. You are fighting 52 elites x3 plus adds in places, there is no way around or to sneak past.
I know someone will say noob lock however i do have two other 70's and the priest and I have done many high level instance runs.
So solo at your peril.

PS all the trolls on the balconys drop one feather each, just follow the corridor around and you will get each one. They are actually the easiest ones to kill in the instance.

The usefulness of the Shard at 70 is so marginal as to be laughable. Honestly, how often will you a) find yourself in need of a VW b) not have a shard AND c) not have enough mana? If the answer to these questions are "Yes, yes, and frequently!" then you are doing something very, very wrong.

IMO, you'd get more usage out of using the staff or the robe for 8 levels. That equals out to approximately a day or so of gameplay, which outweighs the usage one would get from the Shard.

When i comp this quest BC was up and running for maybe a month or 2, and there was not any posts ( or i missed them ) pertaining to this quest and BC. I just hit 58 and went to the outland, wow. The first quest that you recieve will be easy soloing and the obvious reward choice will be the Staff of Twin Worlds +21 sta, +19 int, +13 spirit +35 magic dmg and heal and yes it has a pretty cool look, not as good as the harvester, but unless your someone who likes to stand at the fountain in SW and show your gear off then you really dont care. The second quest you get will blow away your wand most likely, but that is off the subject. The 3rd quest reward you will choose the Goldweave Tunic, 118 armor, +13 sta, +15 int, +8 spirit, +14 spell crit, and +42 magic dmg and heal. These are all yellow quests and easy soloing. Its like the first part of the outland u encounter was made for a lock banish, track demons.

What im trying to say is that im kicking myself for not taking the trinket. No you wont be using it all the time, but i would rather have something i would use once in a blue moon or in a critical moment for as long as a play my lock, then something to disenchant 4-6 levels after i got it.

After i finished those quests in the outland i immediatly though of this quest and the hard time i had choosing.&nbsp I wish someone would have made a comment on BC when i was looking for advice. Good Luck

The robe is not that good and will be upgraded pretty quickly.

The trinket is ok, but it doesn't offer anything but a little laziness, and you must realize it has a 30 MINUTE COOLDOWN.

The scythe will likely last you until endgame, so go ahead and get that. You will not be disappointed.

The Shard may be usable at lvl70, but i personally never use it. I always have full 28 slot Soul Shard bag, I can always drink for mana, and I am surely not wearing this trinket in combat (now that u can't change items in combat it is useless). But u will change staff or robe after few days, maybe even hours of playing, and this trinket is timeless, eventually u will use it, maybe even at lvl80 (when WotLK comes), so I picked this as the reward.

Well i gave this alot of thought when i recently completed the quest and read most of the replies to really try and make an informed decision.I can tell you i settled on the robes for the sta+ and fire/spell dmg+ which gave me the best stat return between that and the staff (70g AH "Soulkeeper" blitzes the staff in pk and out).
I didnt think of the shard as even a consideration despite one reply saying it was the choice for them.

I wish i thought more coz without a doubt the VW summoner should b ur choice. The robes and staff r very much temporary items and i dont care wat any1 says the staff is not comparable to many end-game staffs which r far superior and not that hard to get.The robes are good to get u to lvl 60 while ur saving for ur epic, but will b very quickly vendored once u reach the golden number.

Now how many times have u found urself grinding along nicely with VW and u neglect the fact that ur out of shards after a few soulfires and mistimed shadowburns?.In my case not very often as i use a tracking mod,but from time 2 time ,yes i do find myself grinding with no shards.

Infact this jus happened to me which compelled me to reply.Grinding 54-57 scarlets in the north of western plaguelands, lots of adds although a good grinding spot due to good xp,drops and the multiple low armour casters.I lose my VW to an add and after taking care of the 2 mobs i realised damn no shard >.<.So np i grab my imp and look for a solo which jus isnt that easy in sum high lvl areas. After 2 deaths due to several adds i finally got a shard and continued grinding as before. Now this situation doesnt happen often, but im sure its happened to all lox and in most cases still does.Every single time it happens u will curse ur long ago vendored staff/robes and wish 2 hell u got the shard!

One last benefit of the shard is for use in BG,which is often a place i find myself low on mana + shards. Now any lox that dont use their voidy for sacrifice during flag caps is letting the team down so this shards biggest value is on the battlefield!

The Final Verdict
Dont let ur short term greed cost u a tool that will b a handy addition to any lox bag for the rest of their days!

Why would you need the shard anyway? At this level, I didn't use my Voidwalker. It was my succubus all the time.
and
It may be the best and the most durable, but what's the problem with missing a Soul Shard and an amount of mana that'll be back in no-time (life tap and Drain life in the next fight?). And when you don't use the Voidwalker, this thing is just useless.
A)
The succubus is your favorite minion. You are out of Soul Shards and your succubus isn't summoned. Not one mob that generates XP is in sight. You want to summon the succubus. What will you do?
1. Use the Abysss Shard to summon the Voidwalker.
2. Tell the VW to Stay.
3. Run away from the VW until it is out of sight: You will get a Soul Shard.
4. Summon the succubus.

B)
You are a Demonology spec Warlock. You are in a tough battle, solo. Both your HP and mana are low, and you are getting aggro. Your minion's HP is low too. What will you do?
1. Cast Fel Domination and use the Abysss Shard to summon the Voidwalker.
2. Choose to sacrifice the VW and run away (to fight another day) and/or choose to let VW attempt to tank (giving you time to use pots and/or bandages).

I am sure there are other senarios :).
Since this is a levelling quest, take the item that benefits you most at the time. That simple.
Each quest reward has advantages: Who am I to say that choosing the staff or the robe is "wrong"? But, I see at least a few people, already with level 70 Warlocks, who are posting here (and other sties) and are now saying they are going for the Abyssal Shard. True, these are rewards for a levelling quest, but the Abyssal Shard lasts forever (including times when you willl no longer be levelling ).

As a demonology spec it does seem nice to be able to Sacrifice an already summoned VW, cast another while still being protected by the shield. And if you are a demon spec having master summoner that would still give you the chance to Sacrifice a second time use your 1 sec cast for a third VW. A total of 3 VW's, 3 sacrifices (1min 30 sec worth of shields guarding against roughly 6,000 points of damage) costing hardly any mana. Hardly necessary, but if you havent killed what ever you are trying to kill in that time then you deserve to die. But I will add I have used this strategy very effectively to solo elites bosses.

The Gang of Five (54 Warlock, 57 Druid, 53 Warrior, 52 Shaman and 51 Priest) killed everything that was moving in the ST, including several bosses (dropped 3 blues and pretty much nothing else). We even killed the small snakes. Wild place. Good (not great) XP and good (not great) cash. Nothing dropped except the blues from the bosses. Fun but sort of disappointing except for the scenery, which was world class.

I got some feathers. Where are the others? We spent 2 hours in that place and there was no lunch break. Is there some mystery here that my inadequate education can't help me to figure out?

Being in the ST is sort of like being at one of those cheap resorts, where you know that everyone only went there because they couldn't afford to go to the place they wanted. I'm sorry but I kept getting that impression all throughout the place. Small towels. Paper napkins. Know what I mean?

So now what? Abandon the quest. What else is there? Go back to the Newark of instances? Sorry. I'd rather farm murlocs.

Are the rewards good? Sure. Until you hit 61 in Outland. Spend your valuable time elsewhere.

The real strength of the trinket(and the reason I'm going back at 70 to go get it), is basically for DS warlocks, particularly DS/S+F warlocks.

When you're grinding(something everyone does no matter how far your guild has progessed raiding). If you use DS, you pretty much sac the voidwalker for the health regen. Without this trinket, even if you never die, you're looking at a soulshard every half hour just to keep your DS buff up to date.

With this trinket, every half hour(coincidentally both the duration of the DS buff and the cooldown on this trinket), you can give yourself fel stamina for free.

With certain specs, soulshard usage is a pretty big issue, and this trinket makes things a lot easier.

The Trinket - even if there are limited times you will use it - is the only piece you will not find an upgrade for.

I've seen Locks us it when shard farming before a big raid. I've also seen locks use it when they are doing AoE and know heals might be slow coming (such as on the Bat boss in ZG) - Summon blue, AoE till near dead, sac blue for shield, summon next blue using trinket to save mana. It's saved a few locks from death - it's worth having as an option.

This is a rather controversial subject, and there is a thread for it, but here goes my thoughts on the rewards.

The robes certainly don't seem worth the effort. You almost certainly can and will find better drops through normal looting and/or crafting. They are not bad, mind you, just not altogether great.

Next we come to the Soul Harvester. Yes, it looks awesome. Yes, it has a mighty nice package. But if you ever plan to go into any end-game instance, even just the 5-man ones (Strath, Scholo, DM), then you will likely one day be junking this thing, or it'll be collecting dust in the bank. There are better staves, and you can find them with relative ease with a few end-game instance runs. You might even get yourself a dagger or sword and an off-hand that, together, beat Soul Harvester. So if you get this thing, just do so with the understanding that you will be outclassing it in the near future. Unless, for some reason, you plan to stop going into instances after ST.

Last is the Abyss Shard. I heard all the bad press about it, about how voidwalker was a useless pet to use. Then I ran an AQ20 run where I used Demonic Sacrifice to turn my voidwalker into an extremely good health regen. It allowed me to Life Tap constantly, without the healers having to even bat an eye in my direction. I've since used that trick in a number of situations where me and my raid were constantly in battle, with little or no time to regen mana.

And the best part is, because the DS-voidwalker buff lasts 30 minutes, the shard is basically a free rebuff for that. It leaves me shards for Shadowburn, Soul Fire, summoning, and fast-casting other pets when needed.

So people can tell me they think the Abyss Shard is useless all they want. They can bend logic in any direction to back them up. I've put it to work, and I say it is a mighty fine reward for a rather simple quest.

Again, this is merely my experience with the thing. Do your research, plan ahead, and choose wisely.

With the Burning Crusade only a week ago, I will say that the Trinket here is the best quest reward choice.

Yes the Robe and Staff are nice... BUT you will replace them very soon. The Trinket, while you may not use it right away, very well might be very useful someday, even at level 70!

An example, in the Demonology tree there is a spec type that is dependent on summoning your Voidwalker and then sacrificing him to get major regen back for 30 minutes. What if Blizzard decided to make this spec really awesome someday? You'll be glad you still have this trinket that has it situational uses instead of a Robe or Staff that you vendored when you got to level 59.

And the trinket might have some other interesting uses here and there, yes even at level 70.

I took the shard. At level 53 I got a robe with less stamina but nearly twice as much spell damage. I like my previous warlock quest shadow damage offhand. Offhands and 1hs open up a lot more possibilities than staves do. So I didn't really see the staff as a valid option for me. The trinket however...I can pop that on before I go farming or whatever, summon a free voidwalker, and swap back to a damage trinket. Seems to me like that will be useful forever, so thats why I made the choice I did.

i'd rather take this robe, than the reward from this quest. sure, you can get the robe from the quest before you'll be able to get the robe from immol'thar, but the robe is more easily replaced and i don't find the trinket to be useful enough. and, the soul harvester probably vendors for the highest amount, so when you replace any of those items, that's what matters.

being affliction/demonology, i'd take the soul harvester over the rod of the ogre magi. sure, there are lots of other staves out there better than the soul harvester and rod of the ogre magi, but those are much harder to obtain.

does anyone realize how much better Zum'rah's Vexing Cane is then the soul harvester? Lets compare...

Zum'rah's Vexing Cane
+10 stam
+10 int
+21 spell damage and healing

Soul Harvester
+16 stam
+8 spell hit rating
+21 shadow damage
+looking completely kick ass

I was thinking of getting the Soul Harvester just because of the look, but there is almost no use of it. Who really can use +8 spell hit rating? I've never had the problem of resisting monsters, the real buff on it should be +crit rating. The spell damage from the Vexing Cane is golden because half of the spells I use are fire spells(being a destro lock). The int from the Vexing Cane is nice because if I choose the Robes of Servitude from this quest then I'll be losing 7 int(from the enchanted gold bloodrobe). The Abyss shard seems completely useless because if you're tanking something you should be ready for it. I've never come to a situation where I needed VW, and the only way you should die as a lock is if you don't know how to play it.

So... got really annoyed with the fact that people didn't discuss the quest... only the rewards... so here is my small attempt at an guide to the quest...
I'm a lvl 70 'lock (and only went there to help a guildie out), so don't know if others will experience it this way... but I believe that anyone above 55 can relativel easily solo through the "Temple of Atal'Hakkar" down to the instance entrance. However, once you get inside (like any other instance) you will need a group.

The entrance to the temple (Temple of Atal'Hakkar) is at 55,78 in "Swamp of Sorrows" (north-east of Stonard) and you have to go through the upper levels of the temple to get to the instance-entrance. Getting there is quite basic... you need to get from the south-west corner to the north-east. When you get to the great hall in the north-eastern area the entrance is on the second level of the 3-story hall.

Basically, the quest is made up of 2 parts:
1) You need to clear the upper level to kill 6 trolls (mini-bosses) which keep a boss on the level below shackled.
2) Clear the entire level below for monsters and then kill the bosses there...

First of all to get to where the trolls are take the stairs up which are in front of you when you enter and to the left (there are 4 exits from this area and basically it is the second from the left).
Once you get up there you will be in a circular corridor. The trolls are in rooms scattered around this corridor.
This is basically a kill everything task and quite easy to do.
Essentially, this is all you need to do to get the "trolls of a feather" quest done (the feathers are dropped by the before-mentioned trolls), however since you will most likely be in a group wanting to do the entire upper part of the instance read a bit further...

Go back to the room where you entered the instance and go up the stairs to your right (first stairs to the left from the entrance to the instance). Once you get up the stairs you are going to encounter somewhat large groups of dragonkin which are linked - if you attack one dragon in a group they will all attack you. Before you go to any bosses make sure that all of these groups (and any other mobs) are killed! - otherwise they will charge you when you attempt to kill the dragon-boss (think Scarlet Monastery).
From there it is basically: Kill everything on the level and then kill the bosses... like I said, though, I was a lvl 70 lock when I first entered so I don't know the first thing about tactics on the bosses... this is only meant as a guide for how to get to where you need to be.. :-)
