Dig Rat (8)

Description

A <class> like you must get pretty hungry out here in The Barrens. Me, I'm starving all day long.

Tell you what, I'll fix you up a nice stew. Just need a few dig rats.

Seems those filthy dwarves at Bael Modan are overrun with everyone's favorite feast. Now head on down south to Bael Modan and bring me back some dig rats.

You can't call yourself a seasoned adventurer until you've spent some time killing rats! Haw!

To find out what cooking level is needed I took a bunch of raw fish, started a fire right by the quest guy and started cooking. I went up to level 75 (max at apprentice) and there was no quest mark. However, as soon as I learned journeyman cooking from the nearby cooking trainer, Grub had a quest for me. So, it appears that rather than needing a specific cooking level, you have to be at least a journeyman cook to get this. I believe you can become a journeyman at cooking skill 50.

He is in a tower to the east of Xroads (55,31).

Took me a bit to find him at first, no one gave coords so there they are.

If you're like me and your main is an Alliance character and you're thinking you'll roll a Horde toon just to get this recipe, then you're in for a long haul.

For starters, you have to level your Horde character to level 15 just to be able to accept the quest. However, the dig rats are surrounded by level 21-22 Alliance mobs, so after accepting the quest, you're THEN going to have to level another 5 levels just to complete the quest.

That's a pretty heavy commitment just to get a recipe that you're never going to use. Sure, you'll be closer to having all the cooking recipes in the game, but is it worth it?

Who am I kidding... of course!

This quest will not be available to you untill you have learned Journeyman Cooking by the Cooking Trainer.

The rats are in the pit filled with Bael'dun Excavators (south of Crossroads, The Barrens).

Head south from Xroads towards Thousand Needles, just before entering that zone on your left is a mining camp. Below in the pit filled with level 21-24 Bael'dun Excavators, in the middle are your level 1 dig rats. Few and far between so plan on camping for awhile if you are solo.

I skiled up next to Grub to see exactly when he gives this quest. Wheni got to 90, he still wouldnt give me the quest but I ran out of stuff to bake, so I left, got more crab meat and clams from Zoram Strand. When I got back, he gave me the quest, without me going past 90.

So, its at the very most, 90, but you may have to leave/zone/relog before you get the '!'.

You get the quest in the barrens.... the coords are 55,31... The npc is in the house. When you get it go to Camp tarajo.. and go south and you will see bach modan or something. When you go there there are dig rats. You need to kill them to get them.

There are 6 rats total in the dig site. Respawn time is 1 min. a piece. Took me 10-15 min to farm up 40. Mobs in the area are lower 20s.

There is a tower, just north of the road between Crossroads and Ratchet, at about the position marked on the map.&nbsp You can find Grub in there.

just did this at level 21. after reaching 39 in cooking, the ! appeared above grub.
it may take a moment until it's triggered.

i think your skill level needs to be greater than 30, nothing more ...

It doesn't matter about cooking skill, it's your level that matters just like with every other quest.

The dig rats i found are in a pit just before you hit thousand needles. head south from crossroads passed camp taurajo. you'll hit the fork in the road that goes to duskwood swap and 1k needles. keep south till you hit the npc with the gand's redemption quest (?). just a bit further south on the left is a mining camp with lvl 21 to 24 excavators. there's prolly 5 or 6 dig rats down there, if you can get to them. I'm lvl 20 warrior and i did hit and run tactics to get my 8 dig rat kills. it didn't hurt that there was someone else down there killing the other humanoids.

On my level 27 warlock I went to the hut and there was no ! above Grub's head.

I picked up cooking from Duhng, still no quest, reloaded the ui, quit and reloaded the game, still no quest. So I headed over to Crossroads (since there is no cooking fire or mats to make your own fire for sale at that hut) and purchased a flint and some wood. Walked back over to the hut, made a fire, bought some flour and mild spices from the guy outside the hut and started making spice bread inside the hut where I could watch Grub directly.

After the first 5 (skill level now 6) still no quest, bought some more, went back to baking. after 20 more (skill 26) still no quest. Bought more flour and spices, When I got to 31 skill I stopped baking as an ! appeared, it might have been triggered at 30 skill but took a moment to appear. I doubt it was triggered at 25 or less because I had to restock at 26 skill which should have given it plenty of time to update the quest giver.

So after all this extensive research I would have to say it's character level 15 and cooking skill level 30 for the quest requirements. Hope this helps someone out there.

I just got 1100xp for this quest at level 30. He never had a ! for me, I had to talk to him first and then he offered the quest, I took it, already had the rats on me and got the reward. I think my cooking skill was around 120 but I still gained a skill level for most of the rats I cooked. (ew, hehe)

Went back with 60 skill, and got the quest, so the cookign skill requirment is somewhere between 20 and 60, hope this helps

Bael Modan is at loc 47,82

Take the road south out of either Crossroads or Camp Taurajo. Keep heading south. It's on the west side of the road.

You are able to get this quest when you got 40 cooking skill.

if you not have cooking skill at all, can you only buy Mild Spices and Simple Flour ( turn grey at 40 skill )

Simple Flour are you able to buy from Cooking vendors

Mild Spices is from Cooking Vendors / Trade Vendors

You do need to be 15, to get the quest, but you don't have to level more just to get the dig rats. You don't need the quest to kill them. You can simply kill them, loot them, and put them in the neutral AH from you alliance character. It's still a small pain.
