Mea Culpa, Lord Valthalak

Use the Brazier of Beckoning to summon Lord Valthalak. Dispatch him, and use Lord Valthalak's Amulet on the corpse. Then, return Lord Valthalak's Amulet to the Spirit of Lord Valthalak.
  •
Lord Valthalak slain
Lord Valthalak's Amulet
Provided Item:
Brazier of Beckoning

Description

All is now ready, <name>.

When alive, Lord Valthalak used to inhabit what is now The Beast's chamber. Go there and use the Brazier of Beckoning to summon forth Lord Valthalak. It will reincorporate him, so he'll have to be killed again. I'd take care of The Beast first, and be sure take enough friends along to survive the upper portion of Blackrock Spire.

Once you've dispatched Valthalak, use the amulet on his corpse. With his spirit reunified, he'll likely want his amulet back, as well.

Good luck!

Talk about a difficult fight! This guy is a total pita!

Prior to downing Valthalak we killed Ossirian and Nef on the same night. Of the 3 fights everyone in my group agreed that Valthalak was the most difficult. I am not sure if Blizzard scales the difficulty depending on your gear but considering how much trouble we had with him this is definitely possible.

Our group consisted of the following

1 Warrior
2 Paladins
1 Priest (me)
1 Warlock
3 Rogues
1 Mage
1 Hunter

Almost all players had some tier 2 and a good amount of tier 1. I personally had 3 tier 2 and 3 tier 1 with Benediction.

Our strategy for our successful attempt went like this:

Our tank pulled Valthalak to the wall where you stage to kill the Beast. He was accompanied by 1 rogue to kill adds that appear close to Valthalak. All others stood back and DPSed with a primary focus on the adds. The lock and occasionally the hunter focused on burning his mana. This is very important as when he has mana he seems to heal himself. Our mage also hit him with improved counter spell whenever possible.

After 40% stage 1 ends and it is an easy fight as it is just a matter of DPSing him down and keeping the main tank up.

Vent was very helpful as we could call out when we were being stunned so that no one died due to being stunned for the full 8 seconds.

Even with this strat it was not easy and did not go perfectly. I died just as stage 1 ended as he hit me with a shadow bolt that did 4700 damage. Our tank died when Valthalak had about 10K health remaining as our palies were out of mana. Thankfully the remaining members were able to do some awesome DPS and finished him quickly.

Downed him last night.

1 Priest
1 Shaman
3 Mages
2 Warriors
1 Hunter (me me me)
1 Warlock
1 Rogue

Warloc on mana drain non stop.
Hunter on drain and adds
3 mages on dps
1 Warrior as tank
1 warrior + 1 rogue on adds
1 Priest on...healing
1 Shaman on adds and support healing

Went really smooth, adds killed fast and the mages did wonders with their dps.

Second Phase went really well, mages nuked like crazy and he went down to phase 3 in about 20 seconds

Phase 3 was a surprise, the aoe kille d3 of us fast but the rest of us managed to kill him anyway.

Had we used Sp potion in phase 3 it would have been a lot easier and we would have lived.

Most of us are mainly blue, with the occational green and purple.

1 of the mages was all epics. He really aint hard as in taking a long time to kill, as long as ppl stay focused he drops fast. We will do him again, but this time we will bring pots ^^

1 prot tank - tanking him.
1 fury warr - dps and for staggered disarm.
2 disc/holy priests.
2 shammies.
1 hunter.
1 druid.
2 mages.

Two groups, one in the SW corner, one in the SW corner. Tank and DPS warr in center.

Everyone was well geared, 5 man blues, and some had epics from ZG. Took three tries, this was the first time for everyone on this and only the main priest (who was doing the quest) knew about the fight. Spent some time talking about it in vent. It would have been a lot better for more to have read about this fight first.

First attempt - 46%, we had the 2 shammies doing mele dps and totems for warr. Mistake, not enough mele killing for the adds that went right for the casters, hunter had dead zone issues and our group was burning him down way too fast and mana users were going OOM. Once one of the priests went down from the adds, then the dps warr went down from the adds. Then adds all over the place, a lot of folks stunned = wipe. Good learning exp.

Second attempt - 27%. Moved the shammies back with the casters, they did a good job on the adds but went OOM too fast. DPS warr killed all adds that stayed by the tank or by him (about 1/4 of the adds stay up there) - again we lost the 2nd priest. Both tank and DPS warr did disarm at the same time so we&nbsp failed to stagger it - mele dmg was too much causing OOM on remaining healer, once stage 3 hit (we were not really expecting it until 20% but we got the shadow dmg starting at 30%), the shadow dmg was crazy, dps war (me) took almost 4k in a few secs, and went down, rest of group took him down a few more percent. Another wipe.

Third attempt. This time the shammies rank reduced their spells (conserve mana), use aoe totems. One wind fury totem for the warrs by them, mana spring for the casters. DPS war took care of all adds near him. Stage 1 no prob - everyone be ready to kill adds, dont worry about max dps on him, slow and steady works a lot better. Stage 2, warriors staggered disarm, 30 secs apart worked really well. Still conserving mana - this is not the time for the all out attack, we were in good shape. Folks except tank use bandage if necessary to conserve mana. Stage 3 hit, fury war went down around at the 20% point from shadow dmg, healers caught tank just in time. It was close, tank died at 7% and remaining died as they use their last spells/abilities. 3 were left standing at end, killing blow was from mage wand with the remaining completly mana drained and almost dead.

Now that we have done it, here are some notes on what we will do next time someone needs it.

Start off with everyone taking shadow protection pots before fight starts - they will make a huge difference (wait a bit until you are out of the cooldown for mana/health pots). Just have tank and dps warr by him every else as far away as range attacks/healing allows. The shadow dmg appears to jump and increase so you dont want many mele near him when stage 3 hits.

Have shammies/rogues ready to kill adds by casters by downranking spells and aoe totems. Hunter and lock (if you have one) keep him mana drained (hard, he has one heck of a tick regen). DPS warr must be ready to kill any adds by tank instantly, hunter kill those that stun the dps warr and/or tank. Vent is really needed to communicate stuns. Go slow, take your time, everyone but tank and healer on tank worry mainly about the adds and dps him when you can but be ready to break off for the adds instantly. The adds each have around about 450hp(?) they go down easy - you just have to do it fast. Arcane explosion from mages will work but cost mana. Mana pot early, this is a long fight, and you will most likely be able to pot again in stage 3. For the DPS warr, the adds you kill will be easy to get, they are right by ya - whirlwind works great here - once down back to dps on him. Note that I tried thunderclap and piercing howl and they don't interrupt the adds, they continue to life drain. The adds are not tauntable - they are there simply to life drain someone.

Right when he gets to 50% make sure the tank and dsp warr are fully healed. PW:Shield the tank, and tank blow shield wall when you see him pull out his wep BEFORE you take the first hit. Tank and dps warr stagger disarm so you can disarm him every 30 secs. Healers will need to really focus on that tank, he is taking a lot of dmg. Tank do the tank thing, spam shield block every time it is up. A prot tank should not have any problems here holding aggro with a good group. Folks in corners no longer need to worry about adds and the dps will really start to take him down fast.&nbsp Folks can bandage if they need heals left over from the stage 1 dont have healers waste mana on renews if you are 1/2 health or higher just do a fast 8 sec HR bandage. Make sure you are FULLY healed before stage 3 hits or the shadow will melt ya face.

Stage 3, get ready for big time shadow dmg. Tank will need heavy healing. DPS warr now is the time for recklessness and death wish cause mostly likely you will die from the shadow soon - 2nd healer keep the dps warr up until the cooldowns are done then he is expendable. If your cooldowns pull aggro, just keep unloading until you either die or tank gets it back. Shammies can run in and mele now and shock when they have mana - healers let them die also - you MUST keep that tank up. This is an all out attack to burn him down before he kills you with his shadow dmg - thus the huge advantage shadow protection pots will give. Non mana mele, pot another shadow protection pot if the first one is gone from dmg instead of health pot. If you have the AB trinket, pop it for a free mini shield.&nbsp Prot tank do everything you can to hold aggro cause your team will be doing everything they can to take it away. Stance dance to battle for mocking blow if you have to&nbsp - you have been taking so much dmg from stage 2 you would have a full rage bar to work with. If you took care of the adds in stage 1 fast and conserved mana (via early potting) this final stage is an all out hella fun attack.

Most importantly - have fun. We all had a blast, it is fun to be challenged with a hard fight and it feels great to walk away with victory (forget about the big repair bills). Heck of a great feeling with the cheers when he is down. Im sure with practice he can be put on farm status and we are looking forward to the ones we can now summon in the other instances.

This guy converts his mana to health, and only has 2600 mana, not much but he regens it fast.best to take 2 locks and mana drain him all through the first stage

Stage 1 (100% Health) Locks mana drain him and Rogues/Hunters kill his adds Very quickly

Stage 2 (40% Health) He gets his Weapon and starts to do more damage,so up the healing and tank use shield wall.

Stage 3 (20% Health) He starts to do AOE shadow bolts without mana so everyone must nuke him.

10 Man'd it

Our raid comprised of 2 warriors,2 rogues,3hunters,1 priest holy,1 shaman healing, 1 mage. After summoning Lord valthalak in center of beasts room stand back against entrance wall by fire or line up along that wall. When fighting starts only the tank goes melee on him. 2 hunters mana drain him while 1 hunter kills shadow add that tries to attack tank dpsing lord valthalak when possible and assisting with mana drain. During this phase it is important that no1 but tank is near lord valthalak he drains life of all around him to heal himself. have 2 rogues and other melee class going around killing shadow adds while rest of raid dps lord valthalak til he is at 40%. At 40% all healing must be maintained on tank he does Max dmg on 1 target you want that target to be tank cause he can take the damage. At this point other melee classes can can go in and attack him the shadow adds stop spawning and he has no mana to drain heal ppl around him. Dps must be strong at this point cause even without mana Lord Valthalak hurls aoe shadow bolts that hit for 1k plus around every 3 to 5 secs. But with all out Dps on him from every1 in raid his health drops really fast. Have shadow prot buff from priest and you can get lucky and resist some of the shadow bolts. in the end ppl only died to shadow bolts and we beat him down pretty easily to complete final armor quests

This boss is actually a Jin'do wannabe. Not that he himself looks alot like jin'do, but the reason for wiping does. As we all know, the main reason for wiping at jin'do is people slacking. Slacking in killing the shades. If everybody is focussed, and keeps the killing of the shades the main priority, all will go well.

The thing with these shades at Val, is that they will do something that looks like lifedrain or something. Nothing will happen at first when they do it to you, but after like 10 seconds, if they aren't stopped, you will die instantly. If you are drained, you will be stunned, and unable to do anything.
The shades mostly come to the group, and leave the tank alone. But once in a while, a shade does attack the tank. Be sure to notice that shade, cause when the tank dies, you die. If killing the shade means that you have to get close to Val, so be it. Shades must die within about 10 seconds.

And the last phase, the tank should shield wall, get some shield from a priest, and get spam heals... Boss does nasty dmg then.

People who say this boss is easy are just wankers, and wanna sound tough. This boss, like Jin'do, needs the whole group to be focussed. Even if you are in tier3 you will die if you slack.

First of all, I want to say that it's nearly impossible to find a group for "lower level" dongeons now that TBC is out. I was stuck on this last part of the quest for two weeks. Frusterating? VERY. Expecially the groups I did find who disbanned after first wipe or before we even summonned him. Most people I get for this run say that UBRS is easy. I'd have to agree if it wasn't for us summoning this boss. They soon realized that he wasn't as easy as "UBRS" bosses. Anyway, to the point.

Night before last I finally got a group to make the run for this boss. I explained the whole fight to them and stressed the importance of killing the assassins. No one listened and we wiped the first time. After we wiped I got tells from group members saying "You were right, he's hard." The second fight night before last, everyone did their job and we got him down to ONE PERCENT! And then we wiped. 1012 hp left on boss, less than a crit from a 70. Frusterating.

Last night I found a group who didn't listen the first time and we wiped during the first stage. Everyone "wised" up after that and did their job. We were able to take him down.

I don't remember the make up of the group but the previous posts shed some good light on making of groups and the stages of LV. LORD VAL IS NOT IMMPOSSIBLE! Everyone just has to do their jobs and not worry about the boss in the first stage. Leave the boss for the tank in the first stage. Good luck to all who still have not completed this quest. If you haven't gotten past this last quest for the tier 0.5, don't give up. It will happen.

Did this last night with a guild raid. I'd say this quest is entirely and utterly impossible to do with a pickup group, because you need exact coordination and you need everyone to know exactly what to do, where to stand and whose life to save.

We had a very good group of people - good in the sense that they didn't necessarily have uber equipment, but that they were all on TeamSpeak and paying attention and doing what they were supposed to do. Still we got three wipes. This is the hardest boss I have ever fought, at least from my priest perspective.

Basically he spawns a lot of adds which will go to your raid members and stun them. If those adds are not killed within 10 seconds, the person they stunned will instantly die. Also the person cannot move or do anything during those 10 seconds. TeamSpeak is very useful here because you can shout out a "there's one on me" and get quick help. They don't have a lot of HP so they die easily, but you need to do it quickly. You will definitely need two tanks and two healers for this so one can take over if the other gets stunned. This bit lasts until the boss is at half health or so.

After that, the adds stop spawning and the boss starts doing immense damage, so you will need a lot (and I mean a LOT) of healing on your tanks. We put a shadow priest in the same group as a healing pally and me (holy priest), with vampiric touch to keep our mana up - worked beautifully. In this stage, basically just nuke the boss with all you've got, but keep the tanks alive at all cost.

This is really a battle much harder than is appropriate for this quest, I would say, considering people doing this quest will not have their Dungeon set 2 and might not even have a complete Dungeon set 1. Good coordination is essential, and you really need to communicate fast and well. I cannot see this quest being done in a pickup group.

We made it on 4th try with what I think was a great group, with the help of TeamSpeak and good coordination. If you don't have that, forget it.

In the end, it was all worth it though. Virtuous set is sooo pretty! =)
(Thanks all Noodles who helped!)

Well as a "casual" player, Valthalak is the ultimate bane of your pickup group no matter what. Why so? Because pickup groups are a reflex of people getting used to instances/encounters in order to speed up the equiping process at the lowest cost possible (lower waittime compared to begging ppl in your guild to do the instance with you while trying to hold rep costs low). You might have been lucky and finished the 45min Baron with randoms cause they happened to be decently equipped and knew the instance well enough. You might have killed the minibosses in Diremaul/LBRS/Strat for the preparation quests because they were pretty straight forward and YOU wanted it hard enough to make the crucial difference with five peeps.

Now Valthalak is a totally new and unique encounter for the vast majority of people AND he requires MC-like tactics in a 10man raid. Don´t even try to let your PUG run into this guy unpreparred and even if you go ahead and explain the tactics your group will whipe horribly and people will act like "zomg u need 40man raid for him .let´s skip plz cuz we´re here for chest setpiece and not rep costs". Now you can try to prepare yourself and hand out pots and stuff (moongoose, armor, mana pots) but PUG´s tend to cheat on you and sell your flasks in the AH instead of using them for the encounter.

So you end up doing this with your guildies and HOPEFULLY your guild is open minded enough to try and learn encounters repeatedly even though there is no fat epic lewt in there.

Personally, I think this is one of the coolest encounters in the game just because at this point ppl have hardly ever heard about this guy save fighting him. Anyways, Blizzard has proved several times in the past that they happily nerf away on challenging fights till the whining dies down and people can easily obtain the epics they desire which is kind of a hard blow for the people who went through all this mess while it was still hard.

Hopefully Blizz will keep the Valthalak fight the way it is, it´s perfectly right.

I did take valthalak down...my luck, i was on the quest where u need to get all the 40 blackrock bracers...so i got to do it again ! But we did kill him. Its a very hard fight, keyword : u need to kill the spawns very fast.

So basically, u summon Valthalak, u fight him and Valthalak will spawn about 2 to 3 spawns at a time all the fight long. The spawns got like 1.5k of hp, theyre undeads. And, the trick is : spawns die instantly when theyre stunts. If u dont kill them fast enough, they put a debuff on any1 ( they choose the target randomly ) which u cant dispell. This debuff is like a soul tap, mind ray ( or whatever u call it ). It will incapacitate u for 8 seconds...after that 8 seconds u get like 10 to 20k of shadow dmg..ouch ( i didnt figure out if its the boss who shoots his shadow bolt at u or if its the debuff, but anyhow, theyre related, u wont get hit if u dont have any debuff..)
So u need to kill the spawns fast before the 8 seconds is over....

Our group was : 2 warriors, 1 mage, 1 lock, 1 rogue, 2 pallies, 1 priest, 1 hunter, 1 druid...

Rogue and 2 pallies were on the spawns. They used all the stunt abilities they have and hopefully they get the spawns fast enough...Id say get 2 rogues for that fight, its gonna make it easier

The others dps the boss like crazy ! the boss itself doesnt hit that hard and he has like 80k of hp !

Good luck guys =)

Our tank pulled Valthalak to the wall where you stage to kill the Beast. He was accompanied by 1 rogue to kill adds that appear close to Valthalak. All others stood back and DPSed with a primary focus on the adds. The lock and occasionally the hunter focused on burning his mana. This is very important as when he has mana he seems to heal himself. Our mage also hit him with improved counter spell whenever possible.

Things to remember

1 – Burn his mana
2 – Kill the adds as fast as possible

Good Luck!
