Twisted Hatred

Kill Lord Melenas and bring his head to Tallonkai Swiftroot in Dolanaar.
Melenas' Head

Description

I must warn you, <name>, this matter must stay between us. The satyr are enough of an embarrassment to us already, and this one is much too close to home.

He is called Lord Melenas. He resides in the nearby cave of Fel Rock where he has gathered a large group of grell warriors. His heart is black as night, and he plots something most foul.

You must find him within his nearby cave just to the north of here, and bring me his head.

You can find the entrance to the cave with the coordinates 54, 52. Melenas is a level 8 Satyr that is just inside up on a ledge. There are many Grells inside the cave, so get a party if you are around level 6 and don't want a lot of hardship.

If you're a first-time player, this quest will certainly cause a lot of pain. I came back to do it as a 12 druid (my first character) and it was still mildly challenging even then. The greatest challenge is the sheer number of Grells inhabiting the place getting anywhere to explore the cave is a challenge for anyone under level 8 or so.
In this cave, there are two "major" spawns Melenas and Threggil.
Melenas the level 8 satyr is up on one of the ledges yes, there are actually two ledges, nearly identical to each other. Go figure. It's not true that he keeps spawning on different places, it's just that the whole cave is really, really confusing until you memorize it. Just go in, and after the 90 degree turn to the left, go right, and keep to the right wall. The tunnel will start turning left, and you will end up in a chamber...If I do remember correctly (it's been such a long time) you want to turn right, and then juke left at the first turn don't keep on going, it'll just put you on the wrong ledge. Melenas is like the purloined letter in plain sight. He's just way up there in the haze with his accomplice. First, kill the two blue Grells, and then take out Melenas' bo9dyguard, and finally Melenas. Melenas transforms into a Nightsaber-like beast after you hit it. You can jump off the ledge into the Grell welcoming party down below in the first (or was it second?) chamber.
While you're in there...Threggil is a level 6 rare-spawn that runs around the first chamber the one that you go into if you keep walking forward after the first turn. Threggil has a nearly-guaranteed drop, the Keen Machete (2.5 DPS main hand sword, if you are so inclined to find out). Be aware that you will most likely get one or two adds, since all the Grells are placed very regularly throughout the chamber.
I tried soloing this as a level 5 (level 5 for the most part, took out Melenas after I hit 6) rogue, and although the Grell are annoyingly perceptive, I was able to kill Melenas after two ungraceful deaths one after killing the two blue-colored Grells and one after killing Melenas' accomplice Grell. I don't know if it's been confirmed or not, but I didn't seem to be able to even hurt the satyr unless I took out his Grell-servant. *sigh* Wasted two pots and three bandages for some cruddy XP and rewards...Say...If I can do this at level 6 (No, half the time I wasn't in stealth and I was usually handling two level 7s at once) it really shouldn't be a problem for most of you and I am definitely not a very good WoW player.

Working my way down there (11 Priest), I ended up gaining a level before I got to the little bugger...

He's in the back of a large circular pool room, surrounded by little Shadow sprites and the other sprites (forgot name). I got lost trying to find him, but after working my way around, I did get to him eventually.

When I did get to him, I had a respawn pop on top of me, which didn't help and needless to say, I became a wisp. Another attempt, and again, I had a repop but this time, I kept on the lil' Satyr demon, and took care of the repop soon thereafter.

Had an elite (6, Theragill?) pop on me while I was making room to collect the head ... got a little exciting.

Overall, received 625XP (at lvl 12) and an increase of reputation with Darnassus.

As noted in the previous posts, if you plan to solo, do it very carefully. Otherwise, get a good strong group.

Not bad overall.

I think this quest has been changed.&nbsp I've done it about 3 times in the past but just went to do it last night and the guy wasn't standing where he normally is. I went deaper into the cave and found him and after I killed him he spawned in the same area but standing in a different spot. I believe his spawn is random now.

This quest is simple if you have patience and put some strategics in it. I was in the cave long enough to spot 3 spawn locations of Melenas. One is near a pool of water in the same room as Thaggril. Another is on the ledge above his spawn in that room. And finally he also spawns on a ledge if you walk back from the 2nd mentioned spawn location. For me (lvl 7 rogue) he was hard until i got some help. Basically i was getting slaughtered trying to run in and kamakazi kill him, and finally after dying a few times i noticed some players were stealing the kill after lots of people had weakened him. Finally i was smart enough to keep all his spawns clear wehre the adds would not be there and when i noticed he was all alone he was a piece of cake. Hope this helps.

stay to the right after you get in the cave,&nbsp he's at 52, 50.&nbsp

Entrance to the cave is at 54,53. Once you get the quest follow the mountian behind the building with it's edge to your right side. Easy enough.

Yes there is one add. No it's not hard enough to merit dropping. If you have a pet, have him keep the add occupied while you slay the boss. I had no problem with this with my 7th level warlock.

I died once before I got the hang of it, then completed it with my level 8 Druid.

If he spawns by the pool of water, it's super easy - none of the mobs will follow you into the water.&nbsp Go in, kick the add's butt while ignoring the dude, then when it's dead, jump in the water.&nbsp Wait for him to evade, then get out with full health and take him on one-on-one.

But the quest rewards really do suck.

OMFG!&nbsp i tried this with my lvl 8 hunter and it is impossible.

1st i tried taking out the last add standing a fair bit away from him, but he pulled anyway.

2nd i res'd and tried taking him out first, but i pulled 2 adds doing this.

3rd i tried going the other way but the first mob i came to ran the opposite way and pulled 5 mobs to me.&nbsp wtf Blizz?

The quest was kinda easy. As a lvl 7 rogue I sneaked in the dungeon with stealth get past the demons (helpt a little bit by others who were trying to solo the quest) and jumped in the river. After I finnaly came to Swiftroot I had the bad luck that someone was faster and killed him.
I waited on the hill at his back and waited for him to pop.
When he spawned he I pulled him with a throwing knive, beat the heck out of him easily and when he was trying to run away I finished him off with another throw. It's better to backstab him but I didn't dare to take the risk of unwanted detection. >.<

If you are borderline for taking him, i.e. unable to handle the adds and him, use the pool to your advantage.

For example, using a hunter, begin unloading your shots on one add and make sure it dies. Then jump into the pool to restet Melanas and the second add, if it also pulled. Repeat.

This should work for any character that can kill one add and live.

I should have gotten the coord while I was there but he's a shape shifting lvl 8 (not leet) with a lvl 7 grell for guard. They were on a ledge. Enter cave, stay right and then at the end of the "right" cave wall cross the river. Up the little corridor and to the left you will find them. you sorta end up curving back to left right before you find him. Nice beginner drops (all whites), I soloed this as an 8 drae mage and lvld to 9 in the process. Killed a rare demon Thegrill (sp?) 2x. Have fun kiddies :)

Killing Melanas can be a pain if you aren't careful. You can solo it at level 8 if you are clever about it. You want to stick to the right all the way until you cross the river (inside the cave). Melanas is on the left a little ways after crossing. If you have dots or roots, or some sort of range weapons use them to stop the mobs from running so you don't get adds. I fought my way in with a lvl 8 priest solo. Killed all the mobs around one at a time then got within nuking range of Mel. Pulled him with 2 nukes then cast my 30 second shield buff, dotted him, and beat him down with my mace. I only had to heal myself once during the fight. Since I was lazy I used my heartstone to port out after I grabbed his head.

I soloed as a level 7 druid, the trick for druids is to pop rejuvenation right before the fight, then hit him with as many wraths as you can before he and the grells start hitting you, then start moonfire spamming. I managed to kill him, loot his head, then I died afterwards, after just spirit rez and hand it in.

Interesting, everyone advocates going right...
I followed the wall to the left and after about 6 or 7 grells came across the boss. Just follow the left wall with the river on your right

The first time I targeted him with Fire of Wrath a couple of times and then changed to a bear to finish him off. I killed him no problem, but his two protector grells made mincemeat of me in the process.

The second time I only targeted the nearest protector grell in the hope of taking the on one at a time. The boss came with the protector as well, but the other protector stayed away. I was able to take both of them out fairly easily before healing myself and taking out the final protector for fun.

I got screwed by someone else on this quest. They followed me through the thing. Watched me kill everyone. I was fighting the boss along with another one of his guys that popped up on me. The guy who followed me, jumped in right as I died, killed said boss, got the head and made out like a bandit without having to do any work. If I were to find that guy again, I would definitely PVP him and kick his butt because that is totally uncalled for. To say the least, I have to do the quest again. Sometimes people just suck.

Tell me why the heck when I try and attack him from the ledge he evades my arrows. Isnt it LOGICAL for a bow user to stay out of knife/sword range and snipe the guy? Why, at lvl 7, does he NOT evade my arrows as long as he has a straight run to me, but when Im out of his reach he and his minions evade every single arrow?

This is stupid.

I did this when I was lvl 8 and i soloed it. When u enter the cave, go right when u get three ways to go, sometimes he will spawn on top of a ledge that you can enter when u go down to the right. Then he will have 2 minions too, but u can drag melenas a short way, just enough too gain the advantage against him and his minions. I'm a rogue, so the quest was easy since I did it in lvl 8...
