Deep Ocean, Vast Sea

Recover the Silver Dawning's Lockbox and the Mist Veil's Lockbox for Gorbold Steelhand in Auberdine. Both items should be found aboard the wreckage of the ships to the north of the village.
Silver Dawning's Lockbox
Mist Veil's Lockbox

Description

Off the coast of Darkshore to our north are two wrecked ships - the Silver Dawning and the Mist Veil. Some time ago, both ships ran afoul of the blasted murlocs as they sailed across the vast sea into Auberdine. They now lie at the bottom of the ocean as trophies for those fiends.

Both captains didn't make it out that night, and their logs and other effects are still below in lockboxes. I'd like for you to recover them for us; it would mean a lot to the crew members still around these parts.

The two ships can be found at 39, 28. You have to pick up Mist Veil's Lockbox from the ship lying on its side before Silver Dawning's Lockbox will spawn in the other ship.

Both lockboxes can be opened from the outside of the ship. Just stand behind the ship and move your cursor around until you find the box.

Did this solo as a 17 hunter. Only death was my pet, once.

First of all, not sure if this matters or not, but I did the north ship first (Mist's Veil). Went around to the side with the big hole in it, stayed just under the surface where the camera shows underwater, but you don't start holding your breath. Targeted a murloc, sent the pet in, and hit follow button to pull it back when he got their attention. When the murloc was almost in range, sent the pet back in, and proceeded to light the little bugger up. Wash, rinse, repeat. Lost the pet when it pulled 4 out, but killed two of the murlocs and swam for my life. The clams are a frequent drop, so if your pet eats clam meat like mine does, no worries about happiness loss.

Got all the fish outside out of the way, then waited for the ones inside to show up through the hole, target, and sent pet, etc. Swam down a couple times to check if the way was clear, eventually it was, and went inside to grab the lockbox. Oh, forgot to mention, used Eagle Eye from a safe distance to make sure I knew where the thing was, a major help.

First lockbox down, headed south, keeping clear of the murlocs. Used Eagle Eye again, eventually spotted the lockbox for the Silver Dawning. In the process, noticed the following:

A. The lockbox was easily accesible from a gunport-looking entrance in the side of the ship, near the back.

B. There were almost NO murlocs nearby outside, and from what I could see, absolutely none inside near the gunport and box.

Intruiged, I killed all of 2 murlocs outside, put my pet on stay, and headed in. 10 seconds in, 5 seconds to loot, and 10-15 seconds out. No muss, only fuss was when I lost the exit hole for a moment. Method might even work on the first ship, don't know. Damn near necessary on the Dawning, the thing is crawling with murlocs.

So, moral of the long-winded story: doing your planning carefully can save you an IMMENSE amount of trouble. Hope this is helpful.

Only Rogues can pretty much do this quest at the appropriate level by sneaking in to where the boxes are at but, even then, it's an interesting event for them -- the boxes are at the front of the ship and require swimming inside to get to them.

The only way to do this is in a pretty decent group or groups. You need to pull the guys out and kill them underwater so, unless you slide in behind a group or what not, you won't get there cleanly to get the quest done.

I play a druid, at 17th level I tried soloing this (it was 'green' easy to me by then). I managed to clear 1 ship enough to get in but the second one... I'd get 2-5 guys per attempt to pull and, even with sea lion form (cannot cast spells when not in own shape), I couldn't handle fighting them all.

get some friends or others who want to do this or simply skip it. The quest results aren't that good and it is Really hard to try this.

Just FYI, each box is located in the bottom of the boat in the stern (back) end of the ship. Both ships sank with their prow (front) end pointing towards land, so the stern is the seaward side of each ship.

There is also a "weapons crate" in the very center of the bottom hold of the south ship. Hard to get to, because there are many close spawns and a hole in the hull nearby where you can get adds coming in from outside the ship.

Rogues may be able to SOLO this, but if you arent a rogue, you can do this with just two people. THe nearest graveyard is so CLOSE, it isnt even a hassel dying.

The trick?

Both you and your partner go balls to the wall, and swim inside each vessel, and get as close as you can to the chest you seek before you most ultimately die.

When you and your partner return as ghosts, wisp back to the location of the chest in each ship, and have your partner ressurect first. While your partner creates a diversion, and starts to get slaughtered...ressurect yourself, open the chest, get the loot. Then swim your ass off as fast as you can outside the ship. Hopefully before you, TOO, are slaughtered, you can get far away from the monster weasels, and then you and your partner can trade places.

Works everytime, Trust me.

This is possibly the most infamous quest in the entire game. Most people choose this as their least favorite, due to it's difficulty and the relatively poor rewards. That said, a warlock will have an easiser time with this due to Underwater Breathing...

Elixir of Water Breathing can be very helpful on this quest if you are not a druid and are typically inexpensive.

Note: Shaman (lvl 22) and Warlocks (lvl 16) have buffs that allow underwater breathing if you find one in the area.

Hint: Ask Nicely (shaman need a reagent for their buff you may have in your inventory)

I have just completed this quest following the hints given above.
Just swim down to the back of the ships and collect the lock boxes through the hull.
I was attacked by only one Murlock. I'm sure he regreted it. He died I didn't.
Getting the angle for the second misty ship (the one on it's side) is harder and may take a few attempts but you can do it.
I did the whole thing solo as a 15 level druid. No breathing potions or spells.

Future Patch 1.5 Changes (5/10/05)
Everyone's favorite Alliance quest, "Deep Ocean, Vast Sea" now gives a substantial coin reward in addition to the choice of item.
This could be an official acknowledgement that this quest is ridiculously difficult for its intended level.

Underwater quests are always difficult because of the breathing limitation, movement limitation and of course AI's non-Line-of-Sight aggro.

Easiest way to do this is to bring a group or:

Die at the first box. Respawn, loot, swim out (alive).

Kill the guard at the second box, die. Respawn, loot, try swim out, but you'll probably die again due to aggro trough the walls.

But you completed it anyway. Yes, the graveyard is very close.

I reckon it's much safer to do this quest with a water breathing buff than not. If a murloc aggros on you and you're halfway out of breath, there's a good chance you won't make it to the surface. Try to acquire a cheap water breathing potion or get a buff cast on you. In my case I just spammed trade politely for a "reasonably priced" potion and someone mailed it to me for free.

In reply to favre, the lockboxes are definitely at the bottom (ie. in the bottom-most deck) of both ships (one box in each).

Just completed as a level 15 druid. Only 'needed' to kill 3 murlocks at each location to reach box. Grabbing aggro from the murlock and then swimming to the surface was the best method for me since I did not have my aquatic form nor did I have potions. Both boxes are at the very bottom of each boat. You'll find the boats somewhere near 40,27. These are not exact coords, but if you stand there, you will see the boats. :)

A few tips:
1) Kill the murlocks quickly. When they reach around 5-10% health, they "run in fear." About 95% of the time they bring a friend back with them. :)
2) The Greymist Seers like to heal themselves, but are very squishy.

As the bug was fixed, I had to find the chests on my own. Both boats have a gaping hole on their bottom sides. Go in those, then swim the length of the boat. You'll find the chests at the opposite end as the hole.

I couldn't do this in one swim, as I needed to clear out blockers and I didn't have a water breathing buff on me.

Just did this quest as a 19 priest. I'm an alchemist, so I had an elixir of water breathing. I got Mist Veil's lockbox first, and it was glowing. however, when I was looking for Silver Dawning's lockbox, it wasn't glowing at all. It's kind of hidden in the water, as it matches up with the boat. It's at the very back of the boat on the bottom level.

Hope this helps.

I was able to do this as a rogue alright. Just stealth, swim in the back port hole and go straight for the lockbox.

Unlock as FAST as possible before you're interrupted by the murlocs. Then swim out as fast as possible. Buff as necessary. Make sure to have a health potion (not to mention burst of speed and improved dodge skills) ready for your escape.

Im a level 15 druid, i did this at lvl 14 though. found out a little glitch that works to your advantage,
as you know from reading, both boxes are in the stern of each boat.
what i did was come in from the stern side on both, i swam up to the ship.

On the 1st ship i had to kill 2 murlocs, and the got as close as i could to the back of the ship to where the silver cog turned gold and i was able to open the box without ever seeing it or entering the ship

did the same thing on the second ship but only faced one murloc and obtained the box

the trick is that you find it from the seaside with your mouse and swim right up to the back of the ships easy as 123...

The things can see u thto the wood panels and the y can even travel thro them (bit of a glitch there), very annoying wen they do it runnin away.

I do have a tactic tho. Go with a very large group and bomb ur way in and find the box. Die, then respawn rite at the box all at the same time and jst simply slaughter them! DO this for both boxes.

Wait til ur lvl 17 as well (the quest level) - but still required a few ppl in a grp and then u do stand a bttr chance.

I think some runs at this are easier than others depending on how recently someone else has cleared out the murlocs.

Anyway, after several solo tries on the 2nd ship, I paired up and we each took a term as sacrificial lamb, drawing the murlocs to the frnont of the ship while the other player unlocked the box. So that's another option.

For me this was truly the most annoying quest I've done so far.

I've completed the quest using a lvl 15 hunter. It took me at least 6 or 7 lives to do it, here's why.

I had no problem locating the chest on the outside of the boat at the back. That was the easy part. Eliminating enemies around that area, also easy.

At the same time as I was doing the quest there was also like 3 other people doing it.

I lost three lives on the first chest in this way:
Life 1: Opening chest... bar is almost filled.... all of a sudden one of the people starts swimming from around the corner closely followed by about 2 thrashers and three of the little creatures. You would think that they would continue and follow that player? No. As soon as they saw me all of em turned on me.

Life2: Swimming towards the chest, same player as before starts swimming towards me, dragging 2 thrashers and 2 creatures. Dead again...

Life3: Getting very suspicious now. I've inspected the area, and it looks clear. I get to the bottom almost to the chest and two other players swim by me... you know what follows. This time though I sent my cat to distract the creatures. It worked well(he has roar), for about 10 seconds, and as Im getting away I get ambushed by 1 creature and the rest catch up....

Next time I did it problem free.

Second chest

I died at least 4 times. I died atleast twice because of this girl who kept getting in the way and asking me what I'm doing, and the first time as I started typing I was ambushed. Second time she kept jumping in front of me so I couldn't target the chest to open.

Then I teamed up with someone who was also doing the quest. Bad idea. This guy not only did not know how to steer properly underwater he did not follow directions. First thing I said to him, don't go inside the boat, first thing he did is go inside and pull all the creatures out and swam towards me. He swam a bit faster than me so he survived an extra 5 seconds. Eventually I abandoned the idea of "teamwork" and completed this on my own...
