Both quests are easy enough if you know when and where to pull.&nbsp I did both of them by myself.&nbsp If you are a druid or rogue, the best thing to do is prowl around the areas so you can get a good idea of where people are, where the plans and letters are, and where to run.

Covert Ops Alpha - The wagon is in front of the mill on a small hill.&nbsp It sits by itself and has some firework looking things on top.&nbsp For those with Cosmos or map coordinates, the mill is at 66,50.&nbsp There are two loggers close to it, so take them out.&nbsp Then attach the explosives, blow it up, and run along the bottom of the hill towards the mill.&nbsp Not all of the Venture guys will leave, but that's okay.&nbsp The plans are on the west/left side of the mill, on a tree stump.&nbsp It looks like a piece of rolled-up parchment.&nbsp I shifted to cat from as soon as it blew, prowled over to the parchment, shifted up, grabbed it, and ran out with only 1 aggroed Deforester to take care of behind the mill.

Covert Ops Beta - This is a little more difficult than Alpha.&nbsp The wagon for this one is on a small hill in front of the mine.&nbsp The mine is located at about 74,58 or so.&nbsp There are no guards on this wagon, just an operator, and he's far enough away where he won't aggro.&nbsp Slightly behind the wagon there is a small hill.&nbsp You can blow the wagon if you stand on that hill and keep the wagon to your right.

The letters for this one are on the right/east side of the mine entrance, on a tree stump.&nbsp They look like a stack of books.

Here's the trick for Beta...the kobolds don't run when you blow the wagon.&nbsp So, you need to kill some of them before setting the explosives.&nbsp On the west side of the mine, there is another small hill with three kobolds wandering.&nbsp Take them out.&nbsp On the east side of the mine, along the ridge, there are two other kobolds.&nbsp Take them out too.&nbsp There is another kobold closer to the letters, but if you attack him you'll draw the attention of everyone else, so leave him alone.

Run over to the wagon (don't let anyone see you!) and set the explosives.&nbsp Get over to the hill and set them off, then take off running.&nbsp Head over the hill where you killed the first kobolds, then turn to the mine and get the plans.&nbsp Then run AWAY from the mine (I went to the east, along the cliffs).&nbsp The kobold you didn't kill will most likely aggro, but if you stop to kill him the rest of the Venture guys will be back and aggro.&nbsp Just make sure your health is full and run along the cliffs.&nbsp He stops giving chase soon.

Good luck, and I hope this helps!

The letters are at 74, 59. The mine is a kobold area, which threw me off at first, but you don't actually have to enter the tunnels.

The cart for the explosives is at 76, 57.

When you set off the explosives, about 10-15 Venture Co. people run over to where it was. That lets you run in and grab the letters, though you may have to kill a few kobolds.

What a pleasant surprise it was that none of the kobolds care about the dynamite.

The Venture Co. people, coincidentally, don't care about the kobolds, so feel free to pull each and every one of them first.

So much for covert ops.&nbsp All I learned from this mission is that you can look down the Spirit Healer's shirt.

QUICK VERSION: Use roots to hold down any mob pounding on you when you get the documents.

DETAILS:
Scout the area (for both quests) as a prowling cat, first, to make sure in your mind where the documents are. For the mine, they're on a box at the foot of the first corner pillar on the *mountain* end.

(Unfortunately, you can't place or trigger the explosives as cat. <8(> )

Get closer than you think as druid -- safely, since you can't prowl! -- and try to trigger bomb. If you are too far away, it will say "Requires explosive" whatever colour. Step once back, try again.

i think there's a wee hillock or small boulder between the waggon and the documents you can stand near. i think you have to be on the waggon side of it to trigger, but i'm not sure.

When it blows, you'll know because you won't get the "Requires..." message and most everyone will start streaming past you. Runrunrun to the documents, rightclick quick, and hope you can open them fast enough.

Probably not. At least one guy will notice you and start pummelling.

If it's a melee-type, *excellent*. Root him quick, then while he stands there and fumes, get the documents. If you can restrain from moonfiring him, even better, so the damage doesn't break the roots.

Oh, and cast Nature's Grasp on yourself quicklike as you start to run to the documents, so there's a chance an attacker might root himself.

Don't even *think* about sticking around afterwards. Run, in any form, away.

If you're getting plinked by axes, that's bothersome. Then it's pretty near impossible, because every plink will disrupt your opening the documents. You may as well either fight it out and die, or run away.

i think the closest guy left, though, to notice you as you nick the docs is a melee-type.

If you couldn't get the documents, for whatever reason, no sweat. Abandon "Covert Ops - Beta", then go back to the gnome and get it again. You'll get another whole satchel, with *everything* for *both* quests.

Whilst i didn't need to try it, i suspect that should a second attempt fail, you could use the remaining explosive at the mine, too. (Instead of at the mill as it was intended.)

Rinse and repeat until you get the documents. Roots and prowl are your friends!

Even better, of course, would be to help someone with their quota of loggers, etc., in exchange for them holding mobs off you whilst you get the documents.

Whoever designed this quest needs to be hanged.&nbsp Alpha was easy, but the second one is impossible.&nbsp No matter what I do, none of the koblds move, and when I attack one, they all aggro on me.&nbsp I picked them all off once, only to have one run at me from inside the mine, with a buddy, to kill me.&nbsp Seriously, it should be like lvl 26 or something.&nbsp I have died nine times, and still haven't made any progress.

I just Solo'd this quest with a 25 NE Priest.

for Alpha, i followed the directions and they worked fine.

On Beta, i had the similar issue with the kobolds,

But if you approach from the upper entrance to the mine, under the Walkway, you can pull each defender without aggro'ing the whole group.

I got these quests as a 25 mage and hadn't done them in 2 years, so I forgot about the explosives.&nbsp I just went to the mine and the lumbermill, cleared a path to the documents (I did remember where they were) which was quite easy, got the docs, and went and turned them in.&nbsp Then I noticed the covert ops pack when I was vendoring stuff later.&nbsp Oops.

What I do remember from doing this 2 years ago is that it's actually easier if you just skip the whole explosives thing.&nbsp Just clear out the guys around the documents and get them.

Just to note, you don't actually need to use the explosives/detonator given in this quest, so if something goes wrong (ie: you took too long getting to the quest item and all the mobs went back) you can always clear to the quest item the old fashioned way. The item is right out in plain sight, so the explosives are just a fun and easier way to get the item.

The mine is in the eastern portion of Windshear Crag, so work your way there and in front of the entrance, you'll see the wagon of explosives. Before setting the charge, look at the entrance of the mine, and in front of it (just to the right) you'll see a crate with a clickable item -- that's your quest item.

As a hunter, here's how I did this: before setting the charge, I cleared the mobs to my left (along the mountain/hills) almost up to the quest item. Then I set the red charge on the wagon, moved a bit away (towards where I cleared) and then detonated the wagon. The mobs in the center/front will investigate the explosion, leaving a couple of mobs to clear. I sent my pet to both leftover mobs to distract them and looted the quest item, then ran away, calling my pet to retreat, back the way I came. The two mobs that aggroed chased me, and I killed them when I was at a safe distance from the mine.

To answer an above question about the capability to get the documents and letters without blowing up the wagons.... the answer is yes... and alone.&nbsp It didn't take too long, but had to use stealth/selective attacking and drawing out one with moonfire then to cat form or if two or more aggro'd then using healing after killing the first then retreat-heal-and reattack the 2nd guy.&nbsp Had the quests...-never received any bomb/detonator from quest giver. Yes, I got him his potions to make the&nbsp nitro... Abandoned each A and B quest...-got quests back and still no bombs or info on how to blow anything up.&nbsp I crawled all over the wagons in as a cat and as a Druid.&nbsp Nothing to select... so this was my only option other than putting together a party.&nbsp Good luck, and watch for a couple coming out of the mine on B.

it took me several tries, then i came here and read the comments. i took alpha first, lit the dynamite, rain it and grabbed the plans.

for the 2nd one i killed a couple of the kobolds around before i detonated. it was all clear by the detonation then. i aggro'd 1 of the axe throwers, made him run in fear, grabbed the plans, a geomancer was aggro'd. i just ran then. by the time i was out of their range, i had less than 50 hp left.

I only have a lvl 24 rogue and was able to do this on the first attempt.&nbsp Just stealth around until you find the documents outside the mine.&nbsp Go to the wagon to the north and plant the explosives (right-click on the explosives when you are butted up next to the back of the wagon).&nbsp This will cause you to "de-stealth".&nbsp There may be one mob you have to clear out from the wagon first.&nbsp Not bad.&nbsp Then go south and kill the single mob next to the stumps to the north east of the mine.&nbsp That will be your hiding place.&nbsp Face the wagon and hit the detonator!&nbsp Wagon explodes, half of the mob runs out.&nbsp Stealth back up to the area with the documents and kill the guy that is just west of them.&nbsp Turn around and grab documents.&nbsp The other mob near the mine entrance should have his back to you.&nbsp If he doesn't he may come after you.&nbsp Do not go after him as this will aggro the other mob by him.&nbsp If you have to deal with him it is likely you will have very little time to get the documents.&nbsp When you do, just grab them and hit vanish if you have been noticed.&nbsp Really not that hard.&nbsp

The bombs have nothing to do with the plans.

The plans aren't easy to find.

If you go in the wrong area of the mine you can waste hours.

The only thing positive I can say about this is the ore nodes in the mine seemed to respawn quick and I did find a goblin in the mine that has a quest.&nbsp Unfortunately he was surrounded by 5 mobs and I couldn't separate them without being killed.

I'll go back to the mine to see what that quest is if I can find a buddy or level a bit more.&nbsp &nbsp It might be an escort.

Thanks again to Mirielle for her wonderfully-detailed description of the task and the solution. But as in Alpha, I agree with Multiboy and Kattril - it's not absolutely necessary to use the explosives.

Because you need to clear the area of potential adds (something all druids are used to), my 24 Druid ended up methodically killing half the mobs around the mine anyway and I was well on my way to killing the other half (sometimes two by two since some of them are linked) when a Troll Hunter showed up. We cleared the rest of the area in a New York minute. Pick up plans. Walk away.

True, we had a few respawns but they never had a chance. I wasn't originally planning to do it this way but why not? Too bad you can't use the explosives somewhere else.

SHORT VERSION: Use Roots to hold down the mob attacking you so you can get the documents.

LONG VERSION: Make extensive use of Prowl to make sure you know exactly where the documents are.

They're at the far end, near the hillside, on a box at the corner pillar. They're *surrounded*.

Unfortunately, cat can't set or trigger the bomb. 8(

After setting the bomb, go toward the documents, *carefully*. i think i remember a wee hillock or small boulder roughly halfway between the waggon and the documents. Try from there -- if you are too far away, a message will appear "Requires ---" whatever the damn stuff is called. Take a step back and try again.

You'll know it triggered because you won't get that message and nearly everyone will be running past you.

Runrunrun -- but carefully between those going teh other way! -- to the documents. If you're lucky, you can rightclick and open the suckers before someone hits you. If someone hits you just as the loot window opens, *ignore them*. Get the loot and scarper!

If they disrupt your opening of the documents, Root them in place. Cast Nature's Grasp on yourself so that there's a chance that an attacker will immobilise himself if he hits you. Try to resist Moonfiring him, you want the roots to hold as long as possible.

Whilst he's being Rooted, get the documents. *Don't* stop to fight him, just run in whatever form you like.

If, by some bad luck, the mob that noticed you is plinking you with axes instead of pummelling you, you won't be able to get the documents (the axes will keep disrupting you). And by the time you clear him out, everyone else is piling on. You may as well die fighting, or run clear right off.

If you blow up the waggon but can't get the documents, no problem. Abandon "Covert Ops - Beta", then go to the gnome and get it again. He'll give you another *whole* satchel, with everything in it for both missions.

i suspect, but did not verify, that you could use the bomb meant for the mill on the mine if you had to. So you could just keep going back to the gnome for more bombs if you have to.

When you accept this quest a black bag will be placed in your inventory. This bag contains the instructions, as well as explosives and detonators for both Covert Ops A and Covert Ops B quests. To get these out of your bag you click on them, and accept the question asking if you want to bind them to you. This takes them from the bag and places them in your regular inventory to be used.

The letters themselves are found on top of a crate in front of the mine entrance. They are pretty easy to spot. The wagon is out a ways north east of the mine entrance.

You place the explosives on the wagon by getting close to it and right-clicking on the wagon. We then approached the mine by coming in from the east and killing a couple mobs to get in closer before detonating the wagon.

This one is harder than Alpha for two reasons:

1. The mobs are higher level.

2. As with Alpha a few mobs will stay behind when most go to investigate. As an added bonus, you also have the chance of mobs from within the mine entrance wandering out to interfere with things as you are trying to get the letters.

Having a partner to do this with was very helpful, as the mobs seemed to return from the wagon more quickly than they did in Alpha. Without a partner, I would not have been able to clear a path to the letter before they returned.

Completing this quest is worth 2,200 exp.

The documents aren't inside the mine, but outside slightly east of the the part of the building that has legs. Find the cart with explosives and move your cursor to the left of the wooden part of the building and the cursor should turn to a cog-wheel over a brown chest. Then use the explosives while on the cart and move away and use the detonator . If you get a message "requires NG-5 explosives" you are too far away. Sadly you cannot use blue explosives instead of red, but you can abandon the quest and reaquire it to get more red explosive.
Still for my 27 level priest, I could not get to the documents fast enough before enough mobs returned and killed me. In the end I did it the old-fashioned way...kill those around the documents and get them.

A troll hunter was around, we took turns killing and clearing and then she showed me where the letters were, to the left and down and under from looking at the mine entrance.

Except one brief moment when both our pets/minions had a brief tangle, it was very smooth.

Never could get the explosives to go off, did not realize that there was a range issue.

The beta documents are far enough away from the entrance that if you go after them from the far side you should not draw the attention of any of the kobalds.

It was interesting. Did not realize that the detonators had such a short range, I kept trying to set them up and then gave up on them because they would never work, I got a silly error message "requires" rather than an "out of range" which would have cued me in. Guess I should have read all of this first.

Kind of fun.

...follow the river, then go south to the mountains and follow them east. Much easier dealing with the Cliff Stormers (or whathever they are) than it is to fight through a bajillion axe throwers and casters.

To complete this one, I did what I should have done for Alpha: Cheat. (A level 21 Deuid is barely able to handle two foes of her level, and they'd often attack in waves of three or four.) So, I got someone who could handle them, my level 60 Warrior. Logged out on a little hillock, logged in as Big Brother, wiped out the targets surrounding the documents, turned into a cat and Prowled my way to Gaxim.

Am I proud? No. Did I complete the rather annoying quest? Yes. The next one requires you to kill Fire elementals, and I thinhk I'm up to the task. THEY don't mob.
