Description

It seems obvious to me that the protectors of the Vale--the treants--had something to do with the Venture Co. being driven back. Unfortunately, even those once great guardians have now become corrupt.

Gaxim thinks their corruption is somehow linked to the weapons the goblins used during their retreat.

I told him I'd collect a sample from a wounded treant and allow him to study it in order to figure out if that's true.

Bring me some of the shrapnel so the gnome can tell me more...

first:
Find Tara Thenysil in Astranaar who will give you a quest to go to stone tallon

second:
do all the quests of Gaxim rust fizzle
the final quest he has you do requites you to talk to Kaela Shadowspear giving you 2 quest
sprtis and ancients this chain leads to the final
quest giving 500 Rep to all faction Alliance

The Charred Vale is located at Loc: 33,68 in Stonetalon Mountains.

Make sure you take a few other quests for the same location meanwhile.

I got my quest item on the first kill.

This quest becomes avaliable after completing the quests given by Gaxim Rustfizzle (http://classicdb.ch/?npc=4077), ie.:
An Old Colleague (http://classicdb.ch/?quest=1072) and Ineptitude + Chemicals = Fun;
and A Scroll from Mauren (http://classicdb.ch/?quest=1075) and Devils in Westfall.
They are very quick to do. In the 1st you just need to buy 4 minor manas and 2 elixirs of minor fortitude (or make it), in the 2nd kill 1, maybe 2 Dust Devils in Wesfall.
Then you get the Covert Ops quests (http://classicdb.ch/?quest=1079 and http://classicdb.ch/?quest=1080 ); after completing them Gaxim tells you to talk to Kaela, which unlocks the quest.

I found the drop on a blackened ancient at the very southern end of the charred value in stonetalon mountains.

I was lucky in that I found the corroded parts on my third kill. I went on to kill two more treants, just on general principles and because they seem to have a longer aggro range than a lot of other mobs, particularly the 27 and 28 treants in Western Ashenvale. Nasty buggers who will sneak up on you when you least expect it.

My 25 Druid got 2300XP and 25 Silver not bad for this level of diffficulty.

Maybe the person who said the drop rate is lower if you are higher level is right, I was doing the quest when everything was grey to me and probably killed about 10 or 15 before I finally got the item from a silver elite treant in the Charred Vale.&nbsp Can't remember what they were called.

Killed a number of trees to get the drop. Finally got it off a level 28 one, as did my hunting partner. It may be the lower level ones (level 25, 26) don't drop the shrapnel.

think that the lower yr lvl when u do this - the more likely you will get it quickly.

quest was gray for me by the time i got around to doing it and i don't know how many i've killed so far w/o a drop.&nbsp :P

When you complete both this quest and (Quest #1083), Kaela will send you back to Astranaar with (Quest #1082). Kaela may not have a "!" for you, though, because the "Update" quest is rated at level 22 for some reason. Just be sure to click her again after you've turned in both quests.

Low spawn rates and lousy drop rates combined with the treants wandering amongst a whole bunch of mobs make this quest QUITE a pain.

The quest item dropped off the first Blackened Ancient I killed. I was in the process of doing the Reclaiming the Charred Vale quest when I got the drop.

Low drop rate, be prepared to kill a lot of these. I got my drop from a Charred Ancient, probably the 10th or so I killed. I imagine that any of the Ancients will do. There are a bunch of them in the middle of Charred Vale but they also wander to the southern edge (approx 28,70 to 38,70) - easier if you can't pull them because they are level 27ish and you don't want to aggro too many.

I would do this quest with Enraged Spirits (fire elementals), Reclaiming the Charred Vale (harpies),and Retrieval for Mauren (basilisks)
I am a level 29 Dwarf Paladin - not too much trouble solo but only 2 at a time at most...

Got the drop from a 'Charred Ancient'. Third one I killed and it actually attacked me because I thought I needed a 'Blackened Ancient', so I was skulking around looking for one when the 'Charred' attacked me and bingo, go the drop.

They must come from Blackened Ancients. The quest level IS 28 and none of the Charred Ancients go up to that level. I killed a single Blackened Ancient (with the help of a Horde) and I got the quest item quick.
