Steelsnap

Bring Steelsnap's Rib to Melor Stonehoof in Thunder Bluff.
Steelsnap's Rib

Description

At times we hunt for food. At times we hunt for honor. And at times we hunt to earn the Earthmother's teachings.

But the hunt I now set upon you is none of these things. It is to slay a creature outside the Earthmother's blessing.

The hyena Steelsnap roams the Thousand Needles, south of the Barrens. He is a tyrant, attracting other hyenas to him and spreading fear and bloodshed among more peaceful beasts.

Find Steelsnap, <name>. Find him, and defeat him.

Rogue tip

If you're not well-geared/high enough to solo, stealth behind the group when you find them and use the very edge of distract circle to stop one of the hyena. After about 5-6 seconds you can attack the lone one without pulling the others as they've walked off too far, thus making the quest totally easy. It will dash to catch up after the distract duration has ended, but the window of opportunity is enough to do the job.

This quest is good to do while your hunting Thundering Bolderkin's for "A New Approach" (towards the top part of the map). You're bound to run into Steelsnap and his 2 counterparts collecting the items you need.

Steelsnap is located on the Western Side of Thousand Needles. He has 2 other guard hyenas and can be found wandering. Bring a group because you can't solo this without a buddy.

Steelsnap spawns inside of the Camp E'thok and exits out of the camp on the west side, around 15,19. His respawn time is around 5 minutes.

He patrols counterclockwise around http://classicdb.ch/?npc=4548 ) that area, so run around clockwise.

As a 29 shadowpriest this was a joke. Inner Fire up, i Bubbled and feared. Killed him before i lost 1 HP. Then i proceeded to kill the other 2, still halfmana at end of fight.

Found him and his posse at 19,26. As a level 28 hunter, it was a pretty easy experience.
I sent my pet in, and pulled one of the hyenas off of him(Frost Trap), then worked on Steelsnap, looted, and disposed of his buddies.

I just sat in front Highperch and waited for Steelsnap to come to me so I didn't have to clear alot of mobs while looking for him and have to worry about respawns during the fight. As a 29 Mage I took him down pretty easily. Concentrate on Steelsnap and once he's dead, loot him and run. He did not "scare" or "fear" me or anything like what one of the other posters mentioned. A word of caution though, the level 30 Elite Rock Elemental Rok'Alim needed for the Test of Strength quest can spawn there as well. You don't want him to aggro you when your fighting Steelsnap and his two guards. You can do both of those quests and the Wind Rider quest all at the same time since they're in the same area.

Steelsnap has this ability to scare you, causing you to run around frantically. Let me tell you from experience that you don't want to fight him in or near the E'thok camp. He scared me into the other centaurs I hadn't killed, resulting in getting destroyed by three or four of them after my pet had finished Steelsnap off. Best to wait until he's away from there.

Steelsnap and his two guards spawn in at 16,19. I solo'ed at 30 as an Affliction Warlock. Very Easy to do with a Void Walker. I killed all three like this. Target Steelsnap and sick your VW on him put on all curses and spells you can then wand to save mana, once this is done and he is dead, I targeted one guard with the void walker and DoT'ed him up and then feared the second guard while placing DoT's on him. Respawn time is about 5 mins or so. Good Luck and I hope this helps since they have a huge patrol path. As of 1/6/08 and the 2.3 patch I have noticed no difference on the quest, both guards patrol with him. As of 2.3 I received 2450xp. and Honored with the Horde.

Tip:
Don't kill him then run away to lose his adds - the 'kill' of Steelsnap changes to a normal heyena.
You need to kill his adds too.

I just dropped a stoneclaw totem while i killed Steelsnap, looted, then ran off.

Hehe well I decided to just wander around and kill stuff at random and hope that I found Steelsnap and it turned out he ended up finding me. Took me a bit by surprise but as a 28 Shaman I threw down a Stoneclaw Totem and killed the first Hyena, then healed up and worked on the second Hyena. Had to pop a healing potion and drop another Stoneclaw Totem and but then it was just down to a low mana/health me and a full health Steelsnap. I started whacking on him and as mana came up for heals I healed myself and got him. Was a rush and glad I came out ahead. Probably could have just killed Steelsnap and then ran but oh well got more xp this way. Happy hunting.

Soloed as a 28 warlock.

Sent voidwalker in to aggro all 3 mobs, put all of the damaging DoTs I had on Steelsnap and just used Sacrifice, SB/Drain life, loot and run.

Just did this as a 26 non-twink Feral Druid. Casted Regrowth then immediately pulled Steelsnap with Fairy Fire to the side to avoid adds (his two buddies came with, of course). Quickly hit Rejuvenation and switched to bear form and got rid of the two regular hyenas, came out of bear form > Regrowth > Rejuvenation > Bear form again to finish him off! Their levels were 28 , 28, and 30.

Oh i love rogues :P

Steelsnap is a bit ahead of his guards. Just use distraction on JUST him, the guards carry on walking while steelsnap is left alone. But u have to attack him before the 10 secs distraction are over, or he'll run straight back to the guards. I killed him without his ads like this xD Hella easy

Did this as lvl 27 mage. I sheeped Steelsnap and killed his guards. Then I was out of mana. But a lvl 42 rogue was passing by, so I invited him. He killed Steelsnap for me and I looted =P

But is not very difficult. I could have wait a sec to sheep him again. Then press evocation and kill 'em :)

Steelsnap spawns in camp E'thok and is lvl 30. He is guarded by two other hyenias. The guards are both black, like the other hyenias of thousand needles, and steelsnap is brown and larger than normal. From his spawn point he makes a big loop out the north end of the fort, to the west near highperch then back to the fort.

Found him at the base of Highperch, I was 29 Troll hunter, laid a freeze trap for one of his buds, attacked him with my pet and bow, multishot all three, one got frozen as planned, feared the other, killed Steelsnap at range, then the other two, lost the pet as it was brand new with no training other than growl 3.

For any rogues doing this quest, the easiest way to complete it is to single Distract Steelsnap leaving his two guards to continue their patrol.

Steelsnap leads the patrol so use distract in front of him, just far enough away from his guards so they aren't distracted. Doing that should leave him standing there while his patrol continues.

The hardest part was finding him.

I solo'd this quest as a very well equiped (not quite twink) lvl 28 shadow priest and I have to say it was a piece of cake. I struck steelsnap first with mindblast then a quick shadow word pain, then smite... feared all three and kept attacking steelsnap. They all ran back started attacking, I reapplied my power word shield, hit steel snap once more with mind blast, he died and i reapplied my shield again and ran till the guards ran away.

I ran back to the corpse and looted it with 50% health and 50% mana.

Pretty simple solution to solo as a lvl 29 'lock.

Header to west entrance of Camp E'thok and killed the mobs near the gate to get some room. Waited on the ledge on the north of the entrance for Steelsnap to make is circuit.

Saw him at distance so targeted him first (the reddish one of the three). Sent in my voidwalker and them hit him with the usuals DoT's (CoA, Corruption and Immolation) then wanded him to death.

Sacrifced my voidwalker and made a retreat to the west. Resummon and return to finish off the last two hyena's. When they were all dead went back to collect the rib.

Solo`d it at level 29. [BE warlock]
Fear one one of the level 29 defenders. Curse of Agony, Immolate and Corruption on Steelsnap [I have corrpution instant cast], then some shadow bolts and he was dead. Quick loot, Sacrifice my voidwalker and run away.

Steelsnap can be found to the west of E'thok, which is far north and west end of 1000 Needles.

He's brown, all other hyenas seem to be purple.

Hit him with a Shadow Word: Pain and a Hex of Weakness or other similar thing. His two buddies will jump on you.

Psychic Scream them (I was lvl 32, so all 3 went running). Zap Steelsnap w/ a wand again.

Using Power Word: Shield and heals, it will then be easy to wear down Steelsnap. You can even loot his rib while his buddies are attacking you.

Took far longer to get to him, and home to Freewind Post, than to actually fight and kill him.

Just soloed as a 27 warrior. I waited at the base of highpearch for about 10 minutes like everybody else, cleared a little place to fight, and used retaliation and cleave to take them out. I had to use one healing pot that I farmed from the centuars beforehand. His guards were level 28 and 29.
