Find an Unrefined Ore Sample on a Gravelsnout Digger or Surveyor and bring it to Tatternack Steelforge at Camp Taurajo in the Barrens.

Description

<class>, you have done well in helping me in the past. The warchief is pleased thus far with what I've accomplished, and asks me to continue with renewed determination. My honor dictates that I give you proper recognition to the warchief for all you have done, but first I would ask you for your help again.

Travelers recently came from the south from a place called Thousand Needles. There they killed a kobold who had an unusual ore sample, but they would not sell it. I want a sample of that ore to examine.

I found it between 65,51 - 67,51, watch for the respawn right where the round boulder is up against a small mountain. It seemed every 5-10 minutes a surveyor or someone similar would come around, it was an eventual drop. DO NOT LEAVE THIS AREA.

For those without Cosmos, if you are to come out of Shimmering Flats and take the main road (the one that is almost a straight line through Thousand Needles,) on the map you'll notice that immediately there are 2 hills to the left and one to the right, GO TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RIGHT MOUNTAIN. Do not go past this mountain.

Note that it only drops from Gravelsnout Diggers, Gravelsnout Surveyors and the rare spawn Gibblesnik. These are found only in the northen and southern parts of the zone.

(So do NOT try to get it from any of the Gravelsnout Foragers, Gravelsnout Kobolds or Gravelsnout Vermins that roams the central parts of the place as I did before I decided to look it up... That will make for a really bad droprate.) I don't think the mining animation has anything to do with the droprate.

I believe you have to complete Weapons of Choice to be offered this quest. At least at level 32 Tatternack Steelforge would only offer me that quest.

This is a horrible quest. I've spent at least half an hour trying to complete it on just about every character I've taken through 1k Needles, and haven't been successful once.

There's only a few of these guys in the whole region, and the drop rate is very low. Just spend the time grinding on wolves while you wait for one of them to spawn over and over.

There is nothing magical about this quest.

You dont need to wait for them to dig.

The digger I killed has JUST SPAWNED.

Apparently the ore is only found on diggers and surveyors and apparently you need to let them dig before killing them.

I must have killed 15 diggers just after they dug. I noticed however that the one time I finally got the ore, the digger took a break and wiped his brow while digging. Thinking this might be a clue, I destroyed my ore sample and followed three more diggers around and waited until each dug but also did the brow wipe animation then proceeded to kill the digger. Each of the three times I got the ore sample.

It is definitely not necessary to watch them mine. Saw a Gravelsnout Digger spawn, killed him before he had a chance to mine anything, and got the ore sample. Based on the few times Blizzard has denied superstitions about loot tables elsewhere, I'd bet it doesn't matter when or how you kill them. It's just a crappy drop rate, that's all.

Very annoying quest for the rewards. I advise taking it and while questing through out Thousand Needles chances are high you'll run into enough of these guys to get the item. Which bring me to my next point the drop rate is quite low for NPCs that are pretty hard to find.

If you do need to go searching for them, go to the east of the Great Lift and follow the ridge till you get to the centaurs there about 3 or 4 that spawn frequently between there.

64,49 found one digger, waited for him to dig and wipe his brow or whatever, then killed him. No sample.&nbsp Got jumped by some wandering mobs, died, came back.&nbsp Found another digger walking around in the middle of the area doing nothing but walking around aimlessly.&nbsp Attacked him, killed him, he had the sample.

Easy to do. Keep in mind that you'll need to allow the Gravelsnout Digger to mine the ore before you kill him. The mobs you need are in this general loc: 57,57.

Got the drop off of a Digger near the Horde encampment on the border with Shimmering Flats. Also, Thundering Boulderkin can be found in this area which are needed for the quest "A Different Approach." https://classicdb.ch/?quest=9431

I followed "Easy to find" from tigerlili as well. Got my ore on the second kill. Literally, soon as you go up the little incline out of shimmering flats, go right to the mountain wall turn left, and you should see a few panthers and maybe a vortex. Should see a few Gravelsnout Surveyors near the small shack.

go to coords 66,51 then there's a big chance that you will see mobs who are called gravelsnout diggers. Keep killing those mobs until you have the ore sample. I got mine in one kill :)

I got the ore sample off the first Kobold I found, a Gravesnout Digger (29), due east of the elevators coming down from Freewind Post [52,48].

The Oricish War Sword (binds on pickup) that you get as a reward sells for 30 silver to vendors.

If you happen across Gibblesnik in Thousand Needles (sorry - no loc) he also drops the unrefined ore.

He wasn't especially difficult to kill as a lvl 27 warlock given he's only lvl 28.

This quest took me forever because I followed the 62.45 cords in The Barrens which is wrong!

This quest has to be done in Thousand Needles. I got the ore sample off of a Gravelsnout Digger around 9.18 (North West for those without cords) which is in the same spot that you can do A Dip in the Moonwell quest. Apparently you can also get it off of a Gravelsnout Surveyor around 11.13 close to where you would do A Different Approach quest as well.
