The Sacred Flame

Retrieve the Cloven Hoof for Rau Cliffrunner at the Freewind Post.
Cloven Hoof
Provided Item:
Filled Etched Phial

Description

Using the water you brought, you will be able to temporarily douse the flame that holds the centaur relic. It will not work permanently, however, so you will have to be quick about it.

You will find Splithoof Crag, the centaurs' stronghold, to the north of here. The flame is kept in Splithoof Hold, a heavily guarded part of the crag.

Be careful, though, the Galak centaur have great numbers here, and will be rather reluctant to surrender something so dear to them.

The entrance to Splithoof Hold is at (44, 37). The flame is in the lowest part of the cave, guarded by two level 30 Galak Flame Guards.

Helpful Hint: When you use the water to douse the flame, it shows the hoof in the loot window. So don't make the same mistake I did and try to open the box after it "doused" the flame. It gets rid of the water and doesn't allow you to do the quest again.

I found this one fun. I don't know why but I like killing the Centaurs. They look funny when they die. They do the wheelie move with their hands in the air and drop. Too bad I can't have one as a mount or a pet. Just head to Splithoof Crag and kill all you see. On the north part of the camp in a cave. The caves follow the same layout as most caves in the game. Fight your way to the deepest part of the cave and you'll finally see the flames. It will be guarded by two mobs. All I did was send in my pet and used rapid fire to bring down the first guard fast then chip away at the second one. Once done, you can fight your way back out or 'stone it.

My results:
You gain 2350 experience.
Your reputation with Thunder Bluff has increased.

I agree it was a pretty fun quest, more challenging than I thought it would be. As a 29 Mage I was able to solo the centaurs easily until I got to the three pull at relic. One of the centaurs does move around a bit, I tried to pull him seperately, but wasn't successful, luckily enough there is a small cave to the right of the relic that you can die in and rez just fine without aggro. During the trip back I realized that I probably couldn't solo pull them and I couldn't win a 3v1 with my current gear, so after I rezzed and rebuffed I tried this instead. I polymorphed one centaur (the caster that roams around a bit), that caused her two friends to aggro me. When they got close, I Frost Nova'd and ran for the relic. As I was running I Mana Shielded just in case the timing was close (Frost Nova only lasts up to 8 seconds). Right click on the Relic, the phial in your inventory gets used up automatically to douse the flames, no pesky right-left clicking needed. Loot the relic and run. Fortunately, the timing bar for dousing the flames and looting the relic was pretty fast, but unfortunately I wasn't able to make it out of the cave alive, but the quest was done :)

If you're a priest, you may choose to fear the two level 30 Galak Flame Guards after you clear the area and douse the flame.

I reckon any class with a bit of crowd control will find it no problem to complete this quest

A rogue could try to stealth all the way, sap one of the gaurds, kill the other.
Depending on how confident u are about killing both, you could use vanish to heal up before killing the other one

to be on the safe side i decided to clear 3 mobs around including a patrol. Made it possible to kill them on my 27 rogue

Went in there solo as a lvl 28 mage, cleared teh cave pretty easily. got to the flame and there were 2 centuars and the 2 lvl 30 guardians. Went in from above the flame and tried to kill the centurs from up there but they would keep evading. Happen to run into a lvl 29 warrior in there and he helped by tanking and i fireballed the guardians. fairly easy with the two of us. disenchanted the bow.

2200+ xp

dinged 29 while i was in there.

44,36.

Don't do this Solo unless you can take two Level 30's Solo. The rest of the cavern is cake by comparison to the final two guards.

as a lvl30 mage it was just too easy.. slaughter everything, go close enough for the last stormer to aggro me and run back, she comes alone :) after killing her just poly one flame guardian... 1on1 they never had a chance :)

p.s. in the first intersection if you take a right instead of the left that is recommended you end on a landing ABOVE the flame, good for pulling

This quest was super easy as a lvl 30 hunter...just pull one at a time and when you get to the two maulers guarding tank yur pet and toast the other. The camp to get into cave is the same one you killed all the scouts and wranglers at.

I soloed this one quite easy. Just go to the cave by following the cliff from the left side.
You can quite easy kill 2 mobs at a time, using stoneclaw totem and magma totem. If you run low on hp, just use warstop and lesser healing wave. That gives you enough hp to finish them of.
Use the same technice one the two guards, flameshock is good to combine with magma totem on the last one of the guards.

I earned 17062 xp on my way in and out +quest xp (2350) and about 50s for looting and selling the sash you recieve. And that was without killing the entire camp or cave, just the fastest way. All this for 24 minutes of playing.

I solo'd it on my rogue today without touching a thing.

To get to the hoof, go to 44,37 and walk in the cave. As soon as you can, take a left and simply follow the wall all the way in, there will be a small stream to tell you you're going the right way. Just run all the way to the hoof ignoring the mobs entirely, if you die it doesn't matter, just go back and push till you are at the hoof. Once you are at the hoof, simply let the mobs kill you. Now come back, but don't revive yet. As a ghost, get behind the hoof, now to your left there should be a large pillar. Get behind the pillar and make sure you are well covered, now revive and simply grab the hoof.

Clear or stealth in. Follow left path. Clear 2 statics and 1 roamer. 4 left, 2 flame guards are static, 2 stormers roam a bit.

Stay on the left side. One of the stormers roam far enough to the left side that it can be single pulled. Just don't let it run. 3 left.

Stealth in, sap one of the flame guard. Gouge the stormer to interrupt its spell. Turn on Evasion. Kill the stormer first and try to end the fight with Slice and Dice, then the flame guard. The sapped one might join in in mid fight, health potion, kidney shot. Vanish if you must.

Pretty standard fight when there is only 2 or less mobs left.

The flame was guarded by two lvl 30 flame guardians. They were not that tough but there was about 4 other mobs in the room with them. My advice is to just wait for the mobs to path away from the guardians and pull them 1 or 2 at a time untill you clear the whole room then douse the flame. Also the cave had some iron and a mithril deposit in it, too bad my mining wasnt high enough to take advantage of it.

Flame guardions are not elementals! Which I thought :P

The flame is a very unimpressive non-clickable purple petite fire.

Ok - as a 26 totally untwinked and nub hunter.. this is how I did it.

Follow the left wall into the cave, clearing as you go. After a bit you'll get to an area with two lvl 30 flamegaurds, and a wandering mob out front. Take out the wanderer first. Obviously you gotta wait until he's closer to you and not the flameguards.

Next drop a freeze trap, and send your pet after one of those lvl 30 guards. As soon as the pet engages, hit passive so the pet pulls the two gaurds back to you. One will get frozen, so sick your pet on the unfrozen one.

This will give you plenty of time to go click the flame and loot the hoof. Ofcourse your pet will die soon, and you will too. You'll end up in a graveyard right next to freewind. Take the spirit rez, ride up the elevator, turn in the hoof and enjoy the new sweeto bow!

Well, my strategy for this quest it's fun...
I tryed to solo in this quest i was level 26 and i made it here is what i've done:
Call the level 27 in front of the guards of the flame, it starts casting a spell while the level 30 guards are coming one your way, Counterspell in the level 27, frost nova in all of them, run to the flame and there you are :)
it is as simple as that, i made it, and i hope this helps somebody :)

Here's how I did it with my 28 Tauren shaman. I cleared until I reached the 3 guards (1 lvl 28 & 2 lvl 30). I ran into them and casted stone claw totem (rank 3), after they attacked it, soon I used Stump to stun them, then did the right mouse click on the flame, when the stump effect went away, they continued to attack the stoneclaw and I was able to loot the Hoof. I ran back straight away but 4 were on me at that time, so I died 3 times trying to escape, nevertheless, I got the Hoof Solo :)

I did this Quest with only my Succubus as company, I had tried before with my Voidwalker but found that to be largely ineffective as at Level 28 my Succubus has seduction so she can at least keep the Centaurs and Fire Guards from attacking you then you can just grind your way through to where the sacred flame is, it's right at the back of the cave by the pond, very unimprssive little thing. I'd suggest Hearthstoning back to wherever your home is as well once it's done as I had virtually no health left and not enough mana to create a Healthstone.

As of March 02 2008 this quest is possibly broken.

I'm unsure but when I went through the whole trouble of doing this whole quest chain I worked my way through the cave, killed the guards and used the phial on the flame only to be presented with an empty loot window. After which my phial was removed from inventory and I was unable to do it again. Basically wasted a good half an hour trying to get to the flame. :(

Anyone that can confirm or deny this?

"no longer bugged" ?
I had the same issue as the person above where I clicked too fast and lost the phial without getting the hoof.
And I wasn't able to get a new one from the questgiver in FP, got to go back to ashenvale.
