The Affray

Kill Big Will, then speak to Klannoc Macleod on Fray Island.
  •
Step on the grate to begin the Affray

Description

If you want to learn from me, then you must first pass The Affray. It is a challenge we on Fray Island like to offer rising warriors who think they're tough, and if you can pass this test then I'll know you are.

To begin, walk into the middle of that crowd yonder and step on the grate. That'll tell Twiggy Flathead you're ready, and he'll send challengers against you.

Beat all the challengers and he'll call out Big Will. Kill Big Will, and return to me in the time we allow.

Nasty comments from some posters aside, this is not that easy a quest, until you figure it out.&nbsp The attackers don't behave like normal mobs, is the problem, so what you would do in normal situations is the wrong thing to do here.

As noted earlier, they do run when you use Demoralizing Shout HOWEVER, it's NOT a good idea to spam DS and keep them running, because if you do, the others will spawn and attack and you'll end up fighting five at once.

You may need to use this ability once, if pressed and low on health.&nbsp But don't spam it.

The key is that after each fight, the next attackers won't spawn unless you're fairly close to the grate.&nbsp If you hang around on the grate in the middle of the circle after stepping on it, you can't win this fight.&nbsp (Well, unless you have a priest buddy standing by to heal you or something.)

Step on the grate to activate the quest.&nbsp A few seconds go by before the first attacker spawns.&nbsp use those seconds to put a little distance between you and the circle of spectators.

The first attacker is level 26.&nbsp Piece of cake.&nbsp After he's dead, eat or bandage to return to full health.&nbsp Then approach the grate.&nbsp Two attackers will go at you at once, again low levels so not too hard.&nbsp But STEP BACK after they spawn!&nbsp You want some time between this fight and the third one.&nbsp Again, return to full health before approaching the grate.&nbsp You get hit by 3 attackers the third round.&nbsp This one's tougher, although they're still a few levels below you, and this is where you might need to use the DS trick and bandage partway through.

Polish off those three, and you'll see Big Will come into the circle.&nbsp This one you have to go up and attack.&nbsp As mentioned, he's level 33, but there's nothing special about him.&nbsp I beat him without using Retaliation (I'd used it against the trio earlier).&nbsp The earlier fights were actually harder.

I failed this quest twice before finishing it, the first time by staying in the circle, and the second time by following the bonehead advice above and spamming DS.&nbsp But once you figure it out, it's doable solo at 30.

Mob: Affray Challenger (hostile)
Level: 26-27
Health: 860

They come one after the other with a 15-20 second break between. You kill them one by one, if too many Demoralize Shout to fear them all, and hunt them one by one. When you have killed the 5 (?) challenger, the boss comes.

Boss: Big Will (neutral)
Level: 33
Health: 1300

You might want to get full health points before going further, you got time to bandage or eat. He is easy, put a rend, demo-shout, use retaliation (if you are desperate) and he is down. Does not hit that hard either, around ~40 and crits ~70 (with demo-shout on).

The challengers come at you like every 10-15 seconds. If you're low on HP, the moment a challenger comes out, fear and bandage yourself, or kill him really fast and cannibalize (UD only).

As for Big Will, you're given the privilege to attack him first because he's neutral, so just run back and charge. I was lvl 30 when I did this. Turned on Retaliation and won with 300HP.

Good luck!

The trick here is to use Demoralizing Shout,,, then you can solo this at lvl 30. All the mobs are set to run away when you cast it, and im NOT mistaking it for Intimidating shout. Use demorializing shout every 10 seconds and your fine.

I'm standing on the grate as I type this and it's not working on Gorefiend.

EDIT: I abandoned the quest twice and got it again. It worked on the third try. I now have Berserker Stance.

I did this quest today. It was insanely easy to solo. I didn't have to blow any cooldowns or use one potion, but then, my warrior has over 1.5k HP (unbuffed) and over 1.7k armor (unbuffed) without a shield. 5/5 in tactical mastery truely shines for this quest, so you can charge something, switch to defensive stance, disarm the target, and switch back to battlestance.
--------------------------

The fight - AKA how I did the fight
You don't need to fight on the grate. What I did was when I started the quest I ran accross the grate and got 30 yards away from the spectaters and the grate and waited for the first one to spawn. As soon as it spawned I charged it, hit it a few times, and backed away from the grate. I killed it 30 yards away from the grate, so I could heal myself without being in combat or aggroing the next "wave". I fought the next few waves just like the first one. Big Will doesn't have any special attacks - just imagine will as a lvl 30 defias knucleduster.
--------------------------

Special Notes
If you need to heal yourself while fighting the wave(s), don't blow imitating shout. Use demorlizing shout instead. Demorlizing shout will do the same thing as imitating shout, but instead of needing 25 rage you only need 10 rage. The wave(s) will run away in fear for up to 20 seconds if you use demorlizing shout!

Big will is usually lvl 29-31, but sometimes is lvl 32 and lvl 33.

The waves you have to fight are lvl 21-30.

From what I saw only one person, regardless of their faction, can be doing this quest at any given time - if a warrior on the alliance is doing it, a horde warrior has to wait. The reason being, from what I saw, there can only be one will spawned at any given time.

If you fail the quest, feel like doing this quest again because you thought it was fun, or was unable to complete it, then abandon the quest and start it again.

I tried this one needed no bandages no potions, at lvl 30, I love the tag line "Kill Will" gave me a good chuckle.
I was amazed that this quest was orange, I guess just becasue the last guy is lvl 33 and even elite. but that would have made it next to impossible at least at lvl 30.
But thta blows about the paliden taking your kill, I would have automatically /pvp. see if the guy will stand up.

I found that the best way to kill them is to stock up from an alchemist to get the armor and strength drinks, then, try it once, if it doesnt work and you die because there are too many, get a talent switch (if you dont want to you dont have to) to protection just enough to get concussion blow. Put the rest on arms so that your heroic strike does more damage, and try it again but stunning guys if there are two at a time. That should let you kill them, but if not, go to other instances with good armor and weapons for warriors. I've done this before.

I fought completely on the grate, its nto too hard to actualy do the enounter, Will is not hostile. I sat on the grate and ate some food while he watched me.

Just dont attack will go at full health and you wont have to blow any cool downs. I wouldnt consider my warriors gear great, its mostly 25-29 a few 22 greens, L20/22 blue maces I picked up for 10g each from the AH 10 LVs ago. (L30 greens have a higher DPS rating, will probably replace the maces soon)

just space heroic strike and Overpower when they're up. Other then that it was a fun quest, reminds me of fight club almost.

Just done this, level 31 warrior, with only a green two-handed axe.

I don't use demoralizing shout, and it is only the matter of outlasting the combatants before the Big Will. I used one healing potion during the duration of the combat, and when I finished off the last&nbsp combatant, my health was less than 10% lol.

Against Big Will: Rest for a bit, heal yourself to the full health. When you're ready, charge him, turn retaliation on, and whittle him down.

This is a fairly easy challenge, you just step in the middle of the arena and fight the first contenders. You may need to use a potion here. Just keep using Rend, Heroic Strike and Sunder Armor. When Big Wil comes out, just leaave him. He won't attack you until you attack him. When you are full health, charge rend sunder armor demoarlizing shout, whatever works for you. All in all this is very easy...

The contenders are 26-27 and Big Will is 33.

You can only be attacked by hordies while doing this quest if you have PvP toggled on, denoted by an alliance symbol by your player icon in the upper lefthand corner and green lettering of your name above your character.&nbsp If these two things are shown, simply type /pvp, and PvP combat will be toggled off after 5 minutes in a friendly area

This quest seems awfully breakable. I was soloing it with 31 troll warrior when 30 dwarf paladin shows up. I was bandaging in prep for Big Will when paladin aggros Will. Killed Will and paladin, but didn't get credit for Will. 3 days later and I still can't get this quest to reset, despite multiple abandon/accept cycles.

--UPDATE: OK, so I did it again a few more tries--finally it spawned one challenger, but the others disappeared and the goblin stopped calling them out. I abandoned/accepted one more time, and it worked no problem. Demoralizing Shout did indeed make them run away, and the whole thing took 4 minutes. Excellent.

If you get this quest and for some reason fail (like I did the first time at level 30) you have to abandon the quest. After you abandon the quest YOU MUST REGET THE QUEST FROM THE NPC ON FRAY ISLAND NOT from the person who told you to head to the island. Also I was in a raid(was level 36 at the time) in the barrens and was able to do the quest but since I was in a raid group the killing of "Big Will" didn't count so make sure you're not in a raid group. I hope these clears up some confusion.

You guys saved my life. After reading this I understood why they all get running away when I was using demoralizing shout :p
That is your biggest asset warriors. Use it again and again. While the challengers are running away you can either hit them with ranged weapons or heal.
Big Will ends up being the easiest bit. I killed him at level 30 with half health to spare. Don't forget before you fight Will you can sit down and eat and so on and fight when you're ready :)
Good luck!

I see that most of the posts for this particular quest have stopped. I'll offer a bit of insite considering the bug mentioned so heavily here has been corrected.

First, make sure you have up-to-date armor and weapons. Running through this with anything less than level 28 armor pieces and weapons will make for frustrating failures. Also, make sure you're skill with your weapon is nearly maxed out. This should be a regular practice to rotate weapons for your warrior, especially if you just upgraded from a 2h sword to a 2h mace. if it's been a while since using the mace, go to a lowbie area and beat on stuff. Your skill will go up quick.

Second, any buff potions or direct buffs from other characters can still be used. So get those potions and have your friends hit you with protections before accepting the quest. I've been told that having a friend along to heal you while going through the challenge is acceptable (been done recently by a friend of mine), but to me that almost seems like cheating. Again, that's just me.

Third, take good bandages. Running in there with linen will not due. If you kill a challenger fast enough - off of the grate - the next challenger will not engage for a few seconds. Just enough time for you to bandage up but not fully heal. You also have to keep in mind that potions have a 1-2 minute cool down time. You may have 10 minutes to accomplish the challenge, but that doesn't mean the challengers will give you 10 minutes. So, save that big healing potion for when you really need it. If you're using it before finishing the third challenger, give up and come back later.

Lastly, Big Will does allow for you to rest. So, have some food or a potion. Step away from the grate and use Charge followed by Battle Shout to build up all the rage you just let go... because you do lose it by stopping to heal. Then hit him with 5 sunder armors as quick as possible - that'll make it easier for all of your other major attacks to actually hit because he is 32nd level. Of course that's moot if you have a rage potion and haven't used any potions yet, or if you're Rage speced.

All in all, if your 32nd level or higher, it'll seem a piece of cake by comparison - and it should. You're higher level than the challenge is designed for.

Hope this helps, and good hunting.

It should also be noted that you can *not* use first aid during these battles or the fight is over immediately. You will not be able to face big will or any more opponents after you bandage. Potions are ok however. Took me 5 runs through before I figured this out because I was almost always away from the goblin announcing what was going on )

Besides the step on/off the grate thing, it's also worth noting that if someone else activates the quest while you're in the middle of it, the Challengers will repop & re-aggro on you. I learned that the hard way, dying as I was trying to knock Big Will silly.

This wasn't as hard as anyone makes it out to be. I used regular silk bandage, and I ended up with about 60% health, and was finished with nearly 7 minutes to spare.

I have crappy gear, with only two blues... my meteor shard from SFK, and my Wingblade from BFD. And I'm Arms spec'd so... you do the math.

I started by doing a rend, hamstring, demo shout. Followed the guy wailing on him and build rage. Targeted the next one, charged, and did the exact same thing. I did this all the way until Big Will came out. (after what? 5 guys?) Stood popped Bloodrage to keep my rage up while I bandaged, and as soon as the bandage finished, I charged again.

Then... I did what I bet a lot of you forgot you could do. I popped Retaliation. Big Will killed himself, and I reaped the spoils. :) So yeah, just remember your cooldowns... and you'll be A. Okay!

Worked like a charm at lvl 30. Fury skilled warrior with a sword/dagger combo. Just used Demoralising Shout a lot to make the first 7 guys run away (they do in this quest). After you kill the last one Big Will appears and you get enough time to heal and buff before you fight him. I charged Big Will, hit Retaliation and killed him very quickly.
