Steal the Defias Tower Key, break into the Defias Tower and uncover the contents of the Duskwood Chest. Take whatever information you find back to Mathias Shaw in Stormwind. Read Kearnen's Journal to gain insight about the tower.

Description

I've been staking out this tower for weeks, <name>. Recently a major shipment came through from Duskwood, and along with it came those guards.

What are they? Your guess is as good as mine. I can tell you one thing - they aren't human.

Anyhow, the shipment had a chest - which is what I assume those abominations are guarding. The zombie with the spikes holds a key we'll need.

Get that key, get in the tower, and uncover whatever is in that chest. Take your findings back to Mathias.

Would just like to add that you NEED to have to trained your lockpicking to 70, or you won't be able to open it. The key you get from pickpocketing won't do the trick.

This will probably save the confusion for rogues like myself that leveled in draenei areas to 20 and hadn't leveled up their lockpicking in Redridge yet.

Pickpocket the Malformed Lev24 Defias guard for the key. He patrols around the tower and is often alone, just wait for opportunity.

Enter tower in stealth mode.
Up one level is a guard stationed in center of pathway. Try to sneak passed her by walking up on the railing to the right (wait for patroling guard to be away).

Even if you alert her, keep going to the right to next landing up. She will follow but you can easily kill her without alerting patrol guard. Stealth your way passed dual patrol on 3rd floor and make your way to top floor.

Circle around to the right, chest is on floor near desk. Sap the boss, the open chest - take book - make a hasty getaway. Or wait for the boss to walk away from the table, or as mentioned above use distract. Open the box and then restealth. You can jump to first floor and run out - hopefully no guards patrolling out front, or stealth out again.

if you haven't done the lvl 16 quest for lockpicking, you need to do that first. my lockpicking was at 81 when i did this quest, and i think I failed once. You don't need the key for the chest, just your thieving tools.

I actually picked the chest with a skill of 81.

They key you must pickpocket off the single guard circling the tower named "Malformed Defias Drone". If he has the key, there will be a shiny yellow trail following him. If you don't see shiny yellow sparkles, don't try. Wait until you see them to pickpocket.

I am a level 21 NE rogue, I got the quest initially from Stromwind, and found the hidden agent next to the tree. The quest was red to me at that time, but I figured why not give it a try.

I picked the guys pocket, to get the key (you only need the key for turn in). First try, easy. I stealthed up the tower, avoiding the defias inside....easy. I sapped the guy at the top, ran over to the chest, opened it and got the journal...easy.

After that, I got scared, jumped down to the bottom of the tower, aggro'd 2 defias, hit the bottom, used sprint, and got the heck outta there.

Overall, if you use your skills, this is a pretty easy quest, you have to get the notion out of your mind that you are going to battle your way through it though. If you should decide to do it that way, you should know that the defias in side, and the undead outside, do NOT drop any loot.

The hardest part about it was getting poisoned for 7 days, but that is another story and quest lol.

Pretty easy quest, pickpocket the spikey hair undead for the key, stealth to the top of the tower and sap the elite, take the journal from the chest, and then run out or vanish (if you've learnt it already).

The chest in this tower is awesome for leveling up your lockpicking skill to 170. It can be used whether you've finished the quest or not... just use Lockpick instead of right-clicking. Keep in mind that it takes 3-5 seconds to repop, and it will give you the Touch of Zanzil debuff every time you open it. Happy hunting!

I'm definitely coming back later to kill the spiked guard. Imagine my surprise when, after my usual ambush+combos, I look up to be almost dead, then actually dead. I almost had him, too. He'll get his. Oh yes.

Tower guards do indeed seem to be one-shot killed by Ambush. That makes the quest all the more fun. I didn't have anti-venom, so just dropped to the door, hit evasion and sprint, and bolted out. The debuff hits subtlety specs especially hard. : /

Just a note: The Malformed Defias guard, despite appearing undead, is a humanoid. He can be sapped!!! When he stops by the fire, walk to him from behind spamming sap. After you get him sapped, you have all the time in the world to Pick Pocket him.

Maybe I'm just cursed, but even approaching the Malformed Defias Drone DIRECTLY from behind, he detects me a good 15 yards away. No opportunity to pickpocket. Level 20.

Completing this quest also awards you the ability to craft and train Poisons. You will learn Instant Poison upon turning in the quest, and can train future poisons at the rogue trainers.

You don't need to do any other quests in this chain if you don't want to.

Anti-Venom FTW. You can get rid of the poison with Anti-Venom, a first-aid skill. So either have some handy so you can use it right after you get the debuff, or find a friendly person who has some.

If you have the "vanish" ability, just "Sap" the fool and pick the lock. saw "Sap" fail and the guy doing it vanished and came back. I then "Sapped" successfully (was only 20, no vanish). he picked it, it respawned, I picked it. 1/2 way through my attempt "Sap" wore off, and my compatriot attacked to distract him.

We both died, but we also both managed to get the chest open and complete the quest.

NOTE: Sap wore off 1/2 way through the SECOND picking. doing it solo you should be able to pick and vanish (or run) while he's still dazed.

*edit: OK, so I can't speel "strategy"*

can anyone answer a question for me, i have the key, but am unable to unlock the chest. i cant right click the key, or lockpick the chest as i am too low in lockpicking (but i have the key!) any help appreciated

Thanks for sharing everyone, especially the writeup from Renice. I tried last night for fun. the pickpocket for the key was a breeze. I died twice inside the tower because I was being a bit careless and then I did not really watch the guards well. If you time it right, you can stealth all the way up to the top without a problem. I am lvl 20 and I have my MOD maxed at 5/5 and I was still seen by the lvl 23 guards inside when I got close. So the 3rd time, I timed it well and ran up on the side the guard was not on. I went all the way up, sap'd the guy, opened the lock and took the book (lockpicking skill was at 92) and hightailed out. Now I am trying to get rid of the 7 DAY poison but from what I am seeing I can't get a bronze bar from anyone other that the AH.

This quest can seem a little hard, cuz most ppl think that you have to kill the man in top of the tower ... but the solution is very simple .... just stealth go behind him and SAP ..... then you get alot of time to open the chest. that was how i did...

And OMFG that drone thing is very overpowered compared to its lvl.

I am good equiped level 21 , have no potions in improved stealth , have the key from that drone but i cant lock pick the chest because : You skill is not high enough :(. What skill does i need to open the chest ? And where can i gain big lockpicking skill ? please help me cose i realy dont know. Or does i have to pickpocket him ?

Easy breasy quest for level 20 rogue...got the key from the first time then made my way up to the top in stealth...turns out my lockpicking wasnt high enough though , so I called a friend who picked the lock when I sapped the guy at top...Only he got it though xD...oh well back to redridge for skill...Otherwise the quest is easy , but the 100 lockpicking skill requirement bugs me ><

i tried on 21 got the book but teh key took me like an 1 hour the zombie sees me in steath when im behind tree and so i could not get behind him also when i pocketed him he automaticaly atcked. I have 5 points in master of deception tehre is something wrong. I could only get key when a mage sheeped him lol

Best let another rogue distract the boss before you try to unlock it. The 30 rogue i had help me with couldnt even take him down 3/4 and i was lucky i got the lock picked.

The key is on the guard with a club, not the axes. You can bypass most guards with stealth cept for one or two.

It was easy for me. All I had to do is sneak to the guy with the spikey shoulder and hair, pic pocket him. Yay, got the key. Then I went up there. But I had to go back to Redridge to level my lockpicking. So I got it to 100. I went back to the tower, and I sap the elite guy, and take the little book.
That thistle tea sounds good. >_<

Why sap Klaven Mortwake? You get Magic Dust when you start the quest. It lets an enemy sleep for 30 seconds, which is about the same as what Sap does, but this magic dust can't fail, I think, and Sap can.

You probably need the lockpicking tools.. pick one up in one of the vendors. Also i kept on getting seen by the guy outside, so i went inv. and waited by the door of the castle, as he begins to appear, target him and pick it before he becomes fully there. Back up and wait for him to leave. you never are in his line of sight so it should be safe. (i had the other undead walk to where i was at and just look at me.. they walked away after abit..) hehe.. gl

ok, where too after alther's for lockpicking? ive got mine to 83 but the locked boxes are green and never increase my skill, and engineer's practice locks are grey for me.i tried going to wetlands but the locked boxes there are all red, and i cant open them.

just wanted to add for the sake of argument that if you read the diary thats complementary when getting the quest states that the mobs are rather fragile to ambush.

which they are ... one shot one kill.

have to admit that i didnt figure to sap the boss though.. -_-

This is a very easy quest.

After you talk to the lady and get the journal stealth up.
Pick pocket the spikey haired zombie (This was the worst part because he resisted alot)

After you have the key stealth up again and head into the tower AMBUSH the first guard when she comes downstairs.

Then AMBUSH the second guard.

Stealth up again and avoid the rest of the guards (it's easy just walk a ways behind them until you can go up the ramp)

When you reach the top SAP the main guy and use lockpick on the chest then use the hearthstone if you have enough time, if not you will prolly die you can just rez at the graveyard and go to SW.

If he resists your SAP then you are prolly going to die just come back and rez on the top floor and try again.

After you have the journal and the key head to SW don't worry about the poison either use anti-venom or wait till you get to SW and the gnome downstairs will give you a quest to make the antidote and it is all in town very easy.

Thats it I hope this helps I see a lot of rogues out there having trouble with this quest I did it at 20 it took me a couple tries on the pickpocket but after I had the key it took me about 2 mins to finish in the tower.....

I don't know why everyone says you need to die. I just solo'd at lvl 20, human, with 2 points in MoD. Pick pocketing is easy, all the guards are on rotation, so just stay oposite of them, got to the top, sap'd the guy like said, opened box, looted, jumped down, hit sprint and was gone. I only took 1 hit. Total time = about a minute and a half.

REALLY easy. Pickpocket key from drone (make sure you are behind him), and then go to the tower and kill the guards. Stealth up the stairs to the top and sap Klaven and lockpick the chest to get the book. Before sap runs out, vanish and find your way out. Btw, the recipe you get is VERY USEFUL so keep it and learn cooking til you reach 50 and make this tea. DO NOT sell the THISTLE TEA RECIPE!

I dunno, was hard for me. Tried 3 times at level 20, 3 at 21, dying without pickpocketing the key. Best I could do at 21 was get the key pop-up window to appear before the malformed drone scattered by bones to the wind. By level 22 had a couple points of MOD, as well as Vanish and Distract skills. I still got iced once by the drone, but got the key on second try. Still, guards gutted me once on the way up the tower. The dude at top also wasted me once, but on another occasion Vanish saved me. Final try I successfully sapped him, got book from chest, but was waylaid on way out and the guards wiped the floor with me. I'm not looking forward to seeing the armor repair bill.

Your lockpicking needs to be at 90+ to pick the box.

I think I F'd up this quest. I made the mistake of following another Rogue into the tower and getting the chest BEFORE I got the Key. Now, the key is not with the spiked hair dude no matter how many times I come back and wait for him to re spawn. Even with the books in hand, I couldn't complete the quest. I eventually just had to dump them, abandon the quest and hope I could start over. To no avail, I'm afraid.
