Seal of Ascension

Travel to the Wyrmbog in Dustwallow Marsh. Find the ancient drake, Emberstrife and beat him without mercy until his will is broken.

It is at that moment which you must place the Unforged Seal of Ascension before the great beast. You must then be quick to use the Orb of Draconic Energy on his weakened form and claim dominion over his mental faculties. Control the beast and force the Flames of the Black Dragonflight upon the Unforged Seal of Ascension!
Forged Seal of Ascension
Provided Item:
Vaelan's Gift

Description

Few of the black dragonkin, outside of those in the upper citadel, have the ability to forge the seal with their own flaming breath. Wyrmthalak is one such dragonkin, but his will is unbreakable.

You must travel to the Wyrmbog in Dustwallow Marsh. It is there that you will find an ancient drake known as Emberstrife. You must break his will, <name>. Break it and use this orb on his weakened form. You will have scant seconds to control his mind and fan the flames that will forge the seal.

Here is the short story...

Go into the cave and find Emberstrife (https://classicdb.ch/?npc=10321). He is all alone so don't worry about ads. Have the guy who is making the key, use the unforged seal in the water below the island (out of the aggro range of the dragon). Ideally, the same guy who needs to forge the key will also aggro/pull/tank the dragon...with others healing and helping with DPS.

Get the Dragon down to 10% health and then everyone stop attacking...the guy who is trying to forge the key needs to use the mind control orb on the dragon. (Note: if your a hunter/warlock you should dismiss your pet before this fight...cause the dragon becomes a pet once mind controlled.)

Once mind controlled, then use the first spell on the pet bar (orange block with with a black dragon on it), and cast the spell such that you hit the seal on the floor. If you mess up and he breaks MC...just recontrol the dragon with the mind control orb.

The rest of the party should wait for the all clear (key needs to be forged) before finishing the dragon off. In the mean time just keep that guy healed. You can and should mana up while the dragon is under Mind Control.

Once forged, then you loot the seal on the ground.

Hope this helps. I did it with 4 people, two 60 Shamans, a 60Hunter, and a 55 Druid. A shaman and the druid healed, the other Shaman tanked and forged, and the hunter just DPSed.

Final note: If you happen to be killed after you make him cast his forging spell but before you can loot the object, the forged seal object will remain long enough that you can run back from the grave yard and it will still be there.

ANSWERS TO MOST BUG PROBLEMS SUMMARY ( I encountered most of them :P )
  • MOST COMMON BUG: Unable to hand it in.... If you find you've completed the quest and cannot hand it in.. you have to find another unadorned seal of ascension. Link is here: http://classicdb.ch/?item=12219
  • Some problems result from pet bar issues. These are easy and don't require for you to disable addons if you know what you're doing. If you're using ctmod or equivalent addon, then pet bar may be hidden. I recommend trying a quest that requires you to use it. If it works, great! If not it's most likely to be an addon conflict so disable your addons and it will work.
  • Another problem where ppl may not be able to mind-control it, usually because Health is not low enough- you'll get an emote when it is (at or below 10%).
  • Not being able to loot the seal is easy, I made that mistake, I was in a raid group. It's a party quest!
  • Try not to die before you mind-control or kill Emberstrife. This may cause some issues. Lvl 70 may require a healer. I did this with one healer as 70 rogue (with epic gear).
Then the Vaelan will speak to you allowing you to hand it in.

If multiple people are doing this quest at the same time, they can all place their unforged seals on the ground. Only one person has to mind-control Emberstrife and use the correct spell to forge them. Since the attack must hit all of the seals, it is recommended that you place them all together.

If by some chance you miss one of them, someone else can mind-control him and try again. When I did this quest, it appeared that the attack you need to use in the pet bar (the left-most one) was usable once per mind-control, rather than having a cooldown.

I just did this last night, successfuly, and figured a better walkthrough of the entire event would've helped me not waste a few hours of my life. Enjoy.

1. The very first step of creating the UBRS keys is to gather these 4 items from LBRS
- Unadorned Seal of Ascension: random drop from mobs in LBRS
- Gemstone of Spirestone: random drop from Highlord Omokk
- Gemstone of Smolderthorn: random drop from War Master Voone
- Gemstone of Bloodaxe: random drop from Overlord Wyrthmalak

2. Once you have these 4 items, you must turn them into Vaelan in LBRS. He's located at the top of the slope that is right before the first wooden bridge. If you go to the very top of that slope, look left, you'll see a single orc at the very end of that flat area. That's Vaelan in disguise. He will transform back to his normal self when you get close. Speak with him. He says a few things and eventually lets you complete the 4 item Seal of Ascension quest. You now should get another Seal of Ascension quest which sends you to Dustwallow Marsh. Vaelan gives you a box containing (1) Orb of Draconic Energy and (1) Unforged Seal of Ascension. Both of these items have 5 charges which equates to 5 chances at getting your Unforged Seal, Forged. If you fail all 5 times you will have to go Gem hunting again.

3. Get a group of 5 or so capable people and head to Dustwallow Marsh. The quest, Seal of Ascension, describes how you must find the ancient drake known as Emberstrife and use him to forge your seal. The cave that this named 59-61 elite is in is located just south of Onyxias lair at the very southern part of Dustwallow Marsh.

4. Once your party has reached the cave where Emberstrife is located, go in and position yourself across from the plateau that he sits on. There should be a shallow lake between you and him.

5. Now the fun begins. What you're trying to accomplish here is to use Emberstrife to forge your Unforged Seal of Ascension. This is accomplished by a form of mind control, and using one of his abilities that pops up for you on the Unforged Seal. I'll detail this event.
- Make sure whoever is doing the Quest is not tanking. You have to do a couple things that should not be interrupted.
- Have someone with a ranged attack pull Emberstrife. Fight in the shallow lake as there can be issues with LOS and forging of the Seal.
- When Emberstrifes health reaches around 25%, the person who has the Unforged Seal of Ascension needs to use that item. When used you will see a purple orb type object floating a little off of the ground. This is the Unforged Seal of Ascension. It will only last for a couple of minutes, so its best to use that item when he's around 20-25% health.
- When Emberstrifes health reaches 10-15% everyone will see an orange emote stating "Emberstrife's will is faltering". At that time, everyone must stop attacking. I say again, stop attacking the drake. At the same time, the person who has the Orb of Draconic Energy needs to target Emberstrife and use the Orb. What this does is mind control the drake.
- The person who used the Orb should now have total control over Emberstrife. Position Emberstrife so that he is facing that Unforged Seal of Ascension that you placed. You should also have a minibar that pops up just above your main bar that contains 4 different abilities. You want to use the very far left one which is "Flame of the Black Dragonflight". Making sure that Emberstrife is facing the Unforged Seal of Ascension, use that ability. If done correctly you will see an icy blue cloud spew from Emberstrife. If you put your mouse over the Seal, if done correctly, it should now say Forged Seal of Ascension. Also note, Emberstrife can only be mind controled for the duration of the channeling bar that pops up. You do have ample time to do the event, however, once that bar is gone, you have to repeat the battle again.
- Once you have Forged the Seal, you can either right click on the mind control icon to cancel mind control or let the channeling bar run out. Once you return to your character finish Emberstrike and go right click on the Seal. You will receive the Forged Seal of Ascension at that point.
- The last step is to return the Forged Seal of Ascension to Vaelan in LBRS. You then are given the Seal of Ascension which opens the door to UBRS. Congrats!

Emberstrife is located in a cave in the far SE corner of Dustwallow Marsh. He's further SE than Onyxia's Lair. Lots of 41+ dragonkin in the area, but they should all be grey to you if you're high enough to get this quest.

You'll need a party, but if you've just finished LBRS, you should have plenty available. A 5-man group of anyone in their high 50s should be sufficient. You'll need a tank and a healer would be very helpful, but otherwise any class type will do. It's preferable to have the quest-holder (whoever has the Unforged Seal) not be the main tank.

Emberstrife is the only thing in the cave. A shallow lake (about waist-deep on a gnome) surrrounds the rocky peninsula on which he stands. You can circle around to where you can climb up the peninsula and attack him there, but don't. We did once and his proximity to the cave's ceiling caused sporadic "Target is not in line of sight" errors for our ranged-attackers.

Instead, face Emberstrife head-on. Vaelon will have given whoever has this quest 5 charges of something. (I didn't have it, but so I don't know the official name, but you'll have 5 charges of it.) The quest-holder will also have an Orb. The quest-holder should set the Orb up in his/her inventory so that he/she can easily use it when the time comes.

When everyone is ready, have the quest-holder throw down one of the 5 charges in the water in front of Emberstrife. Doesn't have to be right up next to him anywhere between your shore and Emberstrife's peninsula will be sufficient. This will create a pulsating purple vortex.

Next, have one of your ranged attackers pull Emberstrife. Something low aggro like a gun/bow/wand is best. Emberstrife will fly to the back of the cavern and then back to the front, i.e. the path you'd take if you wanted to walk up to his position. (No, I have no idea why he doesn't just head straight towards you since he can fly.) Have the tank stand near the purple vortex and tank Emberstrife there. Once the tank has aggroed Emberstrife, everyone else can join in. Though not essential, try and keep Emberstrife in the vicinity of the purple vortex. Emberstrife hits moderately hard, but it shouldn't take long for a party of 57-60s to wear him down, particularly if there is a healer to keep the tank(s) healed.

When Emberstrife reaches about 15% health or so, everyone will get an orange text message that "Emberstrife's will is faltering". As soon as this message appears, everyone should stop attacking immediately and the quest-holder should start using the Orb on Emberstrife. (I don't know what the range requirement on the Orb is, so the quest-holder should probably try to stay reasonably close.) Timing is a factor.

If it works, Emberstrife will turn from hostile (red) to friendly (green) to everyone. The quest-holder should see some special menu bar pop up that controls Emberstrife. The quest-holder shouldn't have to do anything but wait while Embertrife automaticallys forge the Seal. Eventually the quest should register as being complete and the quest-holder should see the Seal change to the Forged Seal of Ascension in inventory. This may not all happen at once, so everyone should just be patient.

Eventually, Emberstrife will turn hostile again. Kill him. He drops almost nothing, but he can be skinned with 305 skinning. (You'll need some enchanted gear or Finkle's Skinner to do this.)

If Emberstrife doesn't turn friendly, he'll keep attacking. Before he wipes your party, go ahead and kill him. He only takes 10 minutes to respawn and Vaelan gave you 5 charges, so you can afford to mess up a few times.

At the end of this, I think you'll need to go one last time to Blackrock Spire to turn in the quest to Vaelan. Since that's just a little past the door to Upper Blackrock Spire, it's not far out of your way. Once you're done, Upper Blackrock Spire is now open to you. Congrats!

After several attempts buggered due to various reasons, and no comments here with instructions I thought I'd try.

When you're in his cave, stay on the bottom in the water. If you fight up top there are a bunch of LOS bugs as stated previously. Just pull it down and it'll work it's way around to you.

When the fight begins, cast your seal on the ground in front of it. Do your thing until it's almost dead and it lets you use your seal. Make sure your party knows to stop attacking it when it goes "blue" and is your minion.

For those who have no experience with mind control or summoned pets, there will be a channeling thing on your screen. This does not mean that he's doing the task he's supposed to, that is the time left on how long you will be in control.

Above your hotkey bar you will see some new spell icons. There should be 4 on the right side. The first one is something along the lines of "Dragonflight." That is what you want. Use that on the seal and it should drop control from the dragon after.

Finish the mob off and then loot the now "Forged" seal from the ground.

I hope this helps out.

When MC'ing Emberstrife, you will actually have *two* abilities that involve the breathing of fire. One of them, the second from the left, has an icon with a flame on it and is called "Breath of Flame", "Flame Breath", or something similar. This is NOT the one you want to use, as it does not convert an Unforged Seal of Ascension into a forged one.

The other fire breathing ability, which is the first from the left, is actually called "Flame of the Black Dragonflight" and is the one you want to use. Its icon is a yellow inscription of some sort that looks nothing like a flame.

The reason I mention this is because when I did the quest, either something in my UI obscured the FotBD icon or I didn't see it in all the clutter, so the only relevant ability I saw was Emberstrife's standard flame breath attack. Needless to say, I was frustrated when I used up three of my Orb of Draconic Energy's charges and the ability didn't forge the seal. After researching more online and disabling all my addons to ensure that the FotBD icon would be visible, I tried again and it worked.

It should also be noted that the Orb of Draconic Energy and the Unforged Seal of Ascension both have 5 charges each. It is unconfirmed as to whether you need to redo the entire quest line--i.e., re-gathering the 3 rare-drop gems--if you use up all 5 charges; on Allakhazam's entry for this quest, a user named KEmperor reported in January 2006 that the quest could be abandoned and picked up again without having to re-collect the gems, but another individual on the same thread reported one year later that it wasn't possible, and that they had to repeatedly ask a GM to restore their gems before the request was granted.

I had originally assumed that this quest was frustrating simply because collecting the rare-drop gems was difficult. I was not aware that there was actually a very confusing and unforgiving quest that followed it; to top it off, as someone mentioned earlier in this thread, the quest has been bugged for at least 5 months such that even after you have the Forged Seal of Ascension, you need to re-obtain an Unadorned Seal of Ascension to complete the quest. As such, this is easily the most poorly-designed quest chain I have ever undertaken, and I am very disappointed with Blizzard.

So after my frustrations with this quest, I decided to add one key point that no one else mentioned. When you aquire the forged seal after completing the dragon aspect, you MUST RETURN TO THE NPC QUEST GIVER IN LBRS. That is where you return to when you need to hand in the completed quest. I know it seems simple enough, but so many people don't realize it since it is not mentioned in the quest outline.

Good Luck with the key!

2 things:

1. Do not place the seal before the fight. Mine was gone before i had Emberstrife mindcontrolled. You can place it easily at 20% of his health as well.

2. His respawned version's Firebreath was just as usable as the first one's. No 1-2h cooldown.

This hasn't yet been described well, so here goes.

Enter the BRS instance, kill mobs in the first room so you can go *right*.&nbsp It doesn't matter if you use the drop or go directly below, you end up in the same place.

Now you have a slope upwards to your right (you're facing south), and more mobs ahead.&nbsp Kill these, and the patrol that comes from the tunnel ahead/left, and go through that tunnlel (eastwards, with a wiggle).

Now you're where you can hug right and do a couple of drops to be at the left/right choice for Mother Smolderweb or the way to the troll area.

That's what you don't do, instead you kill the two groups of mobs in front of you.&nbsp Now look up and left, you should see a lone 'Scareshield Infiltrator', this is actually Vaelan in disguise. Now to get to him....

You'll probably have to kill the next set of mobs just on the slope ahead, so do that. Now look LEFT and go into the dark and up the slope there, and hook around to jump up to where Vaelan is.&nbsp He'll lose his disguise as you approach.

This is actually not hard as a mage, as long as u have improved frostbolt & evoc, I never used frost barrier or ice block once, only mana shield.&nbsp I used two potions, major healing, major mana.

2 defeat:
Once into the cave, go into the water area in front of him, go to the right side, because once u hit him he traverses backward along the platform going out into the water and then comes down the right side.&nbsp So if you get on the right hand side, about midway between where he first is and the very back of the platform, you can get about 2-3 hits off, before he even touches you, I recommended FB for the slowdown.&nbsp
Next when he comes down, just continue FB, when he gets extremely close, Frost Nova, run back, FB and FB again(it really helps if you have Shatter Talent, but its not really required, just would take a little longer.

The key is to run a ring around the two entrances to the water basin.&nbsp When you first come in, if you go straight down the VERY right hand side, there is the ramp that leads down into the water directly in front of him, if you take a left instead, there is a little cave like area, that drops off into the water, and leads out to the LEFT of his starting point, but near the right side ramp.

After you pulled him down the rightside of his platform, run up the very right water ramp and around to the other entrance to the water basin described above, and back where he first started, then back up the same ramp, repeat this procedure, essentially delayed kiting him until he's nearly dead.&nbsp The great thing is when he comes down around the cave on the left path it takes him about 3 seconds that you can use to time another good FB.

The only real requirements I have for this are, about 7k mana.&nbsp 1 major healing(in case u get hit, he hits for about 1500-1800), 1 major mana potion.&nbsp Conjure mana ruby, and have Evocation talent(though most mages do).

After he gets to about 15-20%, drop the unforged seal, I droped mine on the right water ramp, and then FNova'ed him, then got him down to about 10%, then MC'ed.&nbsp Use the spells(1st & 2nd) on the toolbar, u should be able to mouse over the seal on the ground while u have him MC'ed to see if it says Forged.&nbsp I did the flames when the seal was right next to me, so it doesn't seem to hurt u.&nbsp I would of course move him away from you before you release, because you will have to finish him off, looting the seal takes about 5 seconds.

Frost Bolt (Rank1) really helps if u have IMP FB, because u can tag him in under a sec, so u don't get to far ahead without hitting him, otherwise he goes into evade mode.&nbsp Sorry for long commment, lol.

You do hand in to Vaelen .. but ...

I just talked to a GM and he said the quest is bugged and you need to have one of those drop everywhere ring things - the unadorned seal of ascension (like the previous posters said) or Vaelen goes on about other things and doesn't recgonize you.

I was just about to abandon my quest 'cause I didn't quite get that it would be something so simple but do NOT abandon your quest or destroy anything.

Once you've faced Emberstrife, go back to LBRS with your forged Seal of Ascension.&nbsp Get to Vaelen but ... just make sure to pick up one of those ring things on the way in before you get to him and THEN he will talk to you.&nbsp I just handed mine in.&nbsp

Okay, I just did this with one friend.&nbsp I am a 60 Hunter, and it's soloable with a Hunter, but I'd bring someone else with you.

You need to plant the Unforged Seal of Ascension on the ground in the water, then get Emberstrife to very low health.&nbsp She starts to slow down and you can outrun her real easily when she's at about 1/8 health.

At this point, put the seal on the ground in the water in her main lair.&nbsp Then out run her a bit, and spam the Orb of Draconic Energy to MC her.&nbsp The orb lasts about 45sec-1min, which is plenty of time.&nbsp When you have her, face the Seal on the ground and use her ability called Breath of the Black Dragonflight, or something like that.&nbsp Four abilities appear on the lower left of the screen, like pet abilities for a Hunter, and you can use them.&nbsp Use this on the unforged Seal, and the seal will turn usable.&nbsp Get out of mind control and kill her.&nbsp Keep in mind, while you have her MCed, she will slowly regen life, so be quick about it.

Then you just kill her and loot the forged seal on the ground.&nbsp It's easy.

This means any random person there can go loot it before you do and you would have to do it all again.

Emberstrife is able to be solo'd as the previous posters have noted.&nbsp

Here are my notes on the battle as a Affliction/Destruction Warlock:

Emberstrife is easily feared. Mine was not resisted once. I could have done the whole battle fear kiting around the small cave but I found it easier to use the leadge as previously discussed. Do NOT use a pet as you will NOT be able to mind control Emberstrife if you have a pet. I died on my first attempt because of this.

My technique was to drop all my dots (Curse of Agony, Immolate, Curruption, and Siphon Life) on her and then jump off the ledge. By the time she worked her way around to me a couple dots had faded. I reapplied one, feared, and then put the rest on her.&nbsp After all the dots were back on I ran up the ledge to rinse and repeat. Mana was not a huge issue because Siphon Life was able to make up for my losses due to Lifetaping.

It is best to wait till Emberstrife is around 20% life to drop the unforged seal. Once she is around 10-15% I was able to mind control her.
Note: If Emberstrife is feared when mind control lands she will remain feared. The timer for fear my break before or after the mind control timer is up.
Note: If you are hit while trying to mind control Emberstrife it will fail. It failed for me everytime I was hit. She hit me for around 800 in cloth. I'd assume mail users would be hit for around 600 and plate for around 400.

Once she is mind controled just have her flame the unforged seal and you're golden.&nbsp Walk her away before you release because she'll immediately attack you upon release.&nbsp I ran her away, released, then feared her and left the cave.&nbsp Another person showed up for the Onyxia quest and I figued I'd be nice and let the dragon live rather than killing it and making them wait for the respawn.

Good luck in your adventures with dragonkin and may my lessons help whomsoever heeds them.

This quest is confirmed by a GM to be bugged as of 2007/02/04 (patch 2.0.6). You can't hand it in to Vaelan, and the GM's can't do anything about it.

iirc, no quest is do-able in a raid.. if you need that much help, have some friends come unpartied.

60 lock... I was able to solo him, tho it was pretty difficult... I'm full into demon for my felguard and when doing this part of the quest, it is impossible to Mind Control him if you have a pet or, OR even if you try to Demonic Sacrifice your pet prior to trying to do the MC'ing... since I didn't want to waste the Mind Control charges by trying various ways of fighting him w/ a pet and getting rid of the pet before taking him over, I was only faced with that situation once..

My Felguard sacc'ed buff, Touch of Shadow, I believe, kept me from being able to take control of Emberstrife. I kept getting the message 'I already have a pet' or something to that effect.

Also, since sometime recently, Mind Controlled mobs aren't showing their action bars, at least they didn't come up for me... 5 times they didn't show. I tried to use the default key bindings to cast the Flames of the Black Dragonflight, however the only spell he would cast was a reddish flame, and it wouldn't affect the seal that I'd placed on the ground...

I died 4 times attempting this part of the quest, because eventually while I was trying to find and make him cast the right spell on the seal, the Mind Control would run out and he'd turn back on me...

Now, I have no more Mind Control charges, and only 1 more seal charge(to drop it on the ground)... all because Emberstrife's 'pet action bars' would not show up after I took control of him. I submitted a ticket about the completely annoying failure and got the generic email that they'd look into it, but since I've heard nothing.

After reading down some, thankfully I read the post By: KEmperor saying he was able to abandon the quest and pick up the orbs and seal charges in LBRS with no problem... so to LBRS I go...

I have just completed the whole quest. I am level 70 mage. After getting the gems I got the gift box and went to forge the Seal but

I used up all my charges (Orb of Draconic Energy) during the last part where I have to mind control Emberstrife.

You can retake the quest without refarming all the gems. In order to retake the quest here are the steps I performed.
  1. I abandon the quest and used up the remaining Unforged Seal of Ascension
  2. Then I went back to LBRS and farmed for another unadonred seal of ascension
  3. Then I went to Vaelan and talk to him and he gave me another Vaelan's Gift.
I followed the instruction and was able to finish the quest. As it stated on top you always have to have an extra Unforged Seal of Ascension in order to interact with Vaelan.

Warlocks can solo this one with Curse of Doom and Fear. Everything you have to do is Curse of Doom->Fear->Fear->Fear->Curse of Doom->Fear.... Maybe you have to use First Aid sometimes if you cast Fear too late and it manages to hit you. You have enough time to put the seal on the ground while it is feared, no need to hurry relax :)

Did the Emberstrife part easily with 60 Rogue (me), 60 Priest and 56 Warrior. Got him down to around 25% when I placed the unforged seal on the ground then a little bit later I mind-controlled him with the orb to forge it.

You can take Emberstrike with 2 people, but it's harder.

Ok correction, when going to turn in this quest make sure you have another seal of ascension on you and in your bags. That will be the only way you can turn the quest in.

No one wants to help me kill emberstrife so i went to emberstrife. First i went to the cave outside and clear some mobs outside. I went in and hibernate/starfall pulled him outside then root/starfire him until hes 7% then drop the unforged seal and then mind control him while he is rooted then breath the fire on the unforged seal.
