Helcular's Revenge

Retrieve Helcular's Rod from the Yeti and bring it back to Novice Thaivand in Tarren Mill.
Helcular's Rod

Description

Master Helcular was almost complete with his transformation into a Lich when a human lynch mob discovered his ritual lair in the hills and brutally killed him. To make matters worse they buried his corpse in the Southshore cemetery.

Such disregard for the great wizard is unacceptable. As his apprentice I shall see to it that the rains of vengeance fall upon the town of Southshore.

We will need Helcular's Rod first. Yeti overtook his ritual lair. Undoubtedly one of the beasts has it.

Good luck with this one. I have had characters find this rod on the first yeti killed. Other characters had to kill MANY yetis to get the drop. Yes, the yetis you have to kill are in the cave on Darrow Hill. Any yeti there (or right outside) can drop it.

This cave is at Darrow Hill, SW of Tarren Mill, and NE of Hillsbrad Fields.

Coords&nbsp 46, 32

I cleaned out most of the Yeti inside the cave, and was starting on round two, when I got the drop, inside the cave.

When you get to the next quest in this series, you'll have to bring the rod back to this same cave for two of the three flames, so note where the two green flames are.

The third flame is in another yeti cave due north of this one, in the snowy area.

I've done this quest twice. The first time, it took nearly three hours for the rod to drop. The second time, it was only about a half hour. Either way, it seems the drop rate is very low. It's a good quest to do though if you don't mind straight up grinding... overall, it yields some decent xp, plus the yeti cave has some good ore spawns in it.

This might sound hard to believe, but I didn't even have to kill ONE yeti !

When I got there, a kind yeti named Larry just walked up and handed me the rod.

Later that night, he joined our RFK party (we needed a tank), and he ninja'd the boss loot.&nbsp

Prick.

The drop rate for the rod is:

0.52% about(1 in 200) on the cave yeti
0.53% about(1 in 200) from the ferocious yeti
0.08% about(1 in 1000) from the giant yeti
0.08% about(1 in 1000) from mountain yeti

It is completely random and has nothing to do with character level or position of mob either in or out of cave.

Your best bet is too run through the lower cave as the drop rate is much lower in the snow cave.

This item only drops if on the proper quest.

Coordinates for lower cave where drop is highest are 46,31.
Coordinates for upper cave where drop is lowest are 40,74.

Eventually, you will get the rod. If you are fortunate to get the rod outside the cave, you must enter the cave to put out two of the three flames. So don't run off in celebration (as I did).

Coords for the flames are:
Azel 44.28 (turn right inside the entrance, same level)
Veraz 44.26 (bottom floor, near the pool of water)
Uzel is at the Growless Cave (37.67)

Helcular's grave is at 52/53 reached easily by skirting the river to avoid SouthShore guards - his grave is the first you'll come upon once you reach the graveyard. Helcular rises from the grave - no need to stick around further.

Great quest for increasing skinning skills.

The first posts should give cords and brief description of location. Then, if you want to !@#$% or brag about drop rate do it once or twice. Having to scroll down through endless comments that all say the same thing is rediculous. STFU!

Everybody here is talking about the cave yeti, however after cleaning out the cave 3 times I was bored of that and I went towards the mountain yeti (Alterac) cleaned out all the yeti’s from about 33,71 to 33,51 via 40,63 when I was down to the last three (!) it dropped :) I gathered 155 leather and hide in the process.
Moral of the story is you can get it from the mountain yeti as well.

Go to Darrow Hill yeti cave, mob lvls are lower and the rod drop is perfectly random. If you're doing this quest at lvl, this cave is the one not surrounded by yetis (and ogres) who _will_ aggro you, and are too high for you to competently kill. :) As mentioned earlier, Darrow Hill can nonetheless also be a profitable grind.

Got the rod now? Good.

Two of the flames are in this same cave, the third (flame of Uzel) is in the Growless Cave in Alterac up the road (same flame you need for Frostmaw).

Once charged, head down to Southshore by the main road in, hang a left at the cemetary (or else come up from the riverside), with whatever suicidal strategy best suits your personality. Some players corpse creep, some try to stealth, FD or otherwise. Whatever works. Find the right grave (east end of cemetary) and position yourself over it. Then it's a matter of trying to complete the quest before getting caned again (having the funereally-paced quest scroll text disabled is a good idea here).

Now for the 'comment' part of this post.

Once was a time this was a fun quest, not for the XP (which if all goes well isn't great), and obviously not for a quest reward (there isn't one) - but for the "show" you got at the end. Basically, when you died at the cemetary, rather than 'release spirit' you could stay and get a nice display of Helcular losing his bottle and tearing through several Southshore guards before being taken down.

This is no longer the case.

I did this quest for the 6th time last night, and it took a single Southshore guard to wear Helcular down, and take care of his puppets. One of the more disappointing examples of quest nerfing i've seen in game, to be honest.

Frankly i think Blizzard should either return this quest to its former glory, or dump it. I can only imagine some alliance players whinged about this strange spawn that appeared and knocked off the Southshore guards randomly, and Blizzard, being their typical unbiased selves, nerfed the quest. It's not as though other aspects in game aren't weighted toward the alliance after all (lowbie town proximity to major cities, or AV geography, anyone?).

Anyway, that's my whinge over and done with. It's a&nbsp challenging quest at lvl, but what made it fun was that at the end your "almost certain death" run to Southshore had a genuinely entertaining payoff. Not so anymore, and so i doubt i'll pick it up with future toons.

Take care all, and have fun!

This one is easy. The loc of the cave entrance is: 46,32. Just a random drop so keep killing all the Yeti's in sight.

My results:
You gain 2650 experience.
Your reputation with Undercity has increased.

You get the rod of Hercular from a jeti inside the cave loc : 46,31 (HILLSBRAD FOOTHILLS)

it took more then 25 kills before it dropped.

I got 2650 XP at turn in point at Tarren Mill
(Lvl 34 shaman) Ther you get the next step " HELCULAR'S REVENGE"

Alright, we DEFINITELY understand that it is a horrible drop rate.&nbsp There are some things to state:&nbsp 1 please post as little as you can from after this, because it gets horribly angering to go through so many posts.&nbsp Second, the dropt rate does not change whether in or out, it either way has the same, low, drop rate. Whoever said up there that it was grinding disguised as quest, they are entirely correct.&nbsp And last, if you got it on your first or second kill, do two things: say a prayer of thanks to God and do not brag about it.&nbsp Have fun!

Many people think every time they kill somebody, their chances go up.But that is NOT correct. Every time you kill somebody, it has again 1% chance. So sometimes u have it quickly and other times it can be a pain in the ***.

Small schedule to make it clear ^^:
1% is NOT : 1 + 1 turns into 2%! ==> NOT!!
1% is : 1 + 1 stays 1%+0! ==> True
( Drop rate can be different, it was just a example)
When u kill somebody, the drop chance stays the same. It does not increase. Expect spending long times on locations sometimes.

Have a great time in WoW.

The drop rate is the same inside or outside the cave. It's all random. I got it from inside the cave after grinding for maybe 20 minutes. Pretty simple.

The cave is located southwest of Tarren Mill in an area called Darrow Hill. Don't have exact coordinates sorry.

Blizzard has increased the drop rate on some quest. The ones that I have noticed most is

Humbert's Sword
And this quest.

Both quests have had their drop rate increased significantly, you can gather your item in under 10 kills.

The rod isnt inside the cave its always going to be on the yeti to the right of the cave facing it in the tree line.
That is where it dropped and after grinding other alts as well.
It also reads on the lists of drops to be that yeti.
Just to save you some time.
The odds are 2% so you may get it on the first or tenth kill who knows.

This is a really hard drop, I must have killed between 40-50 before 1 dropped, that includes the yetis outside the cave. However it really wasnt so bad that being said. I went in as a lvl 30 hunter, and each yeti was giving off 250-300 XP. I got to grind and quest at the same time, came away from the mission having earned around 7-8000 XP. be patient with this one.

There must be variations of this quest since as an undead mage of the hoarde I was giving the rod by the quest giver. Yet my undead warlock friend was not given the rod and must kill yeti's for it.

Very confusing.

finally got 2650XP and 100rep with Undercity - nice too :)

I've now done this as a 34 mage and a 30 shaman. On the mage I killed a lot of them and it wouldn't drop. I killed one outside and it dropped.

As a shaman I killed all the Yeti outside and didn't get a drop. I moved inside to farm some XP while I waited and it dropped.

This will drop inside or outside it seems.
