Field Testing Kit
Provided Item:
Model 4711-FTZ Power Source

Description

Activating the power source makes the field testing kit start to glow and vibrate. It would seem to be working as planned.

According to Chief Engineer Bilgewhizzle, you now have two hours to collect the data you need in the Tanaris desert. If you do not collect it within two hours, all the data will be lost and you will need to buy another power source from him.

Return to him when you have completed the task.

You have 2 hours to complete this quest, and any items that you test during the quest will expire in 2 hours as well. You can kill any of the basilisks/hyenas/scorpids in the area, and each kill will give you an untested item, which you have to test. Each item won't, however, give you an "acceptable result", and the piece will be destroyed. The quest is kinda a pain, but the exp and rep are nice.

For this quest you require the Field Testing Kit obtained by a previous quest in UnderCity

If you abandon this quest you will need to accept it again and collect 10 water samples to get another power source. You may also need to go to undercity and purchase another field testing kit if you have already picked up and tested samples.

The mobs mainly populate the top half of Tanaris.
Three of the most common mobs that drop the Samples + Maps:

Glasshide Basilisk:[/b] 34%

Blisterpaw Hyena:[/b] 15%

It took me exactly 40 minutes, total. The first 10 of which I spent east of Gadgetstan with maybe a 1 in 5 success rate, the rest I went due south and had a 1/2 to 2/3 success rate. It could have been luck, but it definitely appeared that the higher level mobs had better success. Plus I levelled while doing it - probably got 20,000xp (had rested bonus) just killing the mobs. So it was a good quest!

I don't understand all the bad mouthing of this quest... over 9000 exp for completing it, plus a couple of gold and lots of sellable junk. The quest is even better for skinners/leatherworkers because it provides all kinds of hides to sell on AH or use .

As for the time involved I completed the field testing portion as a lvl 49 Shamin (by myself) in 1 hr 05 min . The advantage of doing it at higher lvl is that you can kill quicker and fewer alli will bother with you in the process.

All in all far from the worst quest blizzard created.

From my experience, you'll probably need around 25-30 untested samples to get the 8 you need.&nbsp

I used the above strategy (gather, test at the end) as a precaution, but was able to complete the quest in an hour.

I did this quest at level 53. I had skipped it before and was bored one day and decided to go back and complete it. Killing nothing but green and grey creatures, it took me a solid hour to get all of the acceptable samples. I obliterated the Tanaris desert - killing everything in sight and testing each sample as I got it. The conversion rate from "untested" to "acceptable" is absolutely miserable. For a level-appropriate person performing this quest, you WILL need the two hours for non-stop killing. The rewards for this quest after you go back to the Undercity to complete is barely worthwhile - and only if you're of the level where the quest is still yellow to you.

If you're a skinner, this might be a good quest for you, though, as everything you kill you can skin - including scorpids for scales.

I would think hard before deciding to invest the two hours into this quest. It very well might not be worth it to you.

Just done on my lvl60 (as a way of getting UC rep) here's some numbers as they haven't been given above:

Hyena untested samples: 38 about 21% chance
Basilisk untested samples: 43 about 18% chance
Scorpid untested samples: 52 about 15% chance

If i had been the appropriate level i can imagine the timer could have run out by sheer luck :( Really wish i hadn't started it;as once you do you cannot stop - just watch that quest timer counting how long this one quest has taken

Bring a skinner. You'll be killing a lot of skinnables, it'd be a shame if you let it go to waste. I'd recommend bringing one even if you are a skinner, as you'll spend less time skinning and more time killing, as well as the added inventory space from not hauling all this leather around with you.

It's also a good idea to relax, 2 hours is plenty of time for this, unless you've got very, very, very bad luck.

I found this quest well worth the effort.

Best if done on off peak hours and avoid the heavy traffic areas like the one between Gagdetzan and the instance or Gagdetzan and Steamwheel Port.

You get 12k xp, good gloves for a caster of the lvl, especially a loc, bout 4-6 bars of xp (mid 40s), and if your a skinner the scorpions give you scorpid scale rather frequently.

This had to be the most nerve wracking quest I have done.&nbsp It is not hard, but if something goes wrong (gankers, server crash, client crash) two hours could be down the drain.&nbsp That said, I did this as a 50 Orc Warlock.&nbsp I started off down south in Thistleshrub (on a whim).&nbsp I found that there is no significant difference in 'acceptable sample' rates for mobs 44-50, but below 44 I got no acceptable samples (might be level related).&nbsp The best balance of 'acceptable sample' rates to killing ease were the level 44 scorpids, level 45 hyenas, and level 46 basilisks.&nbsp For those on high population servers, do this at off-peak hours or two hours might get shot due to gankers.&nbsp Good luck!

Accepted quest, realized i no longer had the test kit, musta discarded it when i was clearing out old quests.

Flew to Org, Zep to UC, bought new test kit. HS back to Tanaris and started killing.

At this point I had already used up 20 minutes of the time.

The further south I went, (higher level mobs) thebetter success I had in getting "acceptable" drops. Of course YMMV.

Meanwhile, I'm loading up on meat for my pet and leather and scorpid scale for my profession.

It took about 35 minutes to get 8/8 of each of the 'acceptable' items required.&nbsp I spent another 30 minutes just grinding on scropid dunestalkers to get plenty of scorpid scale since I was down south Tanaris anyway.

Good quest for my character.

just completed this quest as a 49 shaman.

Went for the lvl 47+ mobs and found that the conversion of untested to acceptable findings were about 1:5.

Got the quest done in an hour flat. Only issues I had were the Fire rocs and whatnot that would wander onto me while fighting. other then that pretty smooth sailing.

I did this solo with a lvl 40 Shaman....its VERY easy.&nbsp I killed all of the things East of Gadgetzan (lvl 40-42).&nbsp At first, it sucks the big one, and you don't seem to get any acceptable samples.&nbsp After about 20-30 minutes, however, they start coming a lot easier.&nbsp I even Hearthed back to Org (to buy an item on AH that I desperately needed) and flew back to Gadgetzan, and still managed to complete the quest with 21 minutes to spare.&nbsp Set yourself at this : 6 Acceptable samples every 30 minutes.&nbsp Since there are 3 types of samples needed, and you need 8 of each, it works out perfectly.&nbsp That way you dont get frustrated when you get 2 acceptable out of 10 samples, because, hey, you still have 15 minutes left to get 4 more.&nbsp Makes it a LOT less nerve-wracking, and you will find that the time flies by.

You can get lots of xp and items if you do the other Wastewander quests at the same time.

I started with heading east from Gadgetzan. Killed all needed mobs on my way to the ruins, then headed south. When reaching the Wastewander area, I grinded for approxamitely 20 min, for those water pouches. Got all I needed, then headed west. Killed all needed mobs again, then heading southwest. When I reached the Noxious Lair, head straight south, and I got the basilisk samples in maybe 15 minutes. I went the same way back, that would say north side-to-side with the Noxious Lair. But instead of heading towards the Wastewanders,I continued north to Sandsorrow Watch. From there, heading to Gadgetzan I got the rest I needed.

I also noticed that the droprate got higher the more south I came. Maybe higher-lvl have higher droprate?

Hope this will be of help!

Well I've abandoned this quest because I had 7/8 of each item and suddenly they disappeared from my inventory.&nbsp I don't know if this is supposed to happen after a certain time but it was extremely frustrating.&nbsp I spend two hours killing stuff, getting a 15 to 1 acceptable rate and have the stuff disappear.&nbsp This is definately not one of the better quests Blizzard developed.&nbsp Its not worth the time and aggravation.&nbsp I recommend y'all avoid it.

Just did this quest with my lvl 41 shaman. It took 1h 30min and I wasted some time to skin all mobs I killed. I kept no other breaks than mana breaks.

The rate in which the untested samples turned to accepted samples was frustrating, maybe 1 out of 6 was accepted. Maybe even less.

I mostly just ran around the little mountain south of Gadgetzan and tried to avoid mobs that were unrelated to the quest (Rocs).

I would recommend getting a friend to keep mana/health recovery time at minimum between mobs.

I finished this quest while simultaneously watching television on my @#$%^&* alt with an hour and 20 minutes to spare. The trick is to head south of Tanaris and kill the things that are higher level. Got 4k experience for turning it in to biggleslap or whatever his name is and then another 5k experience for taking the samples back to UC. UC was on my hearth, so yay4me.

This quest is quick, easy, and simply off the charts in terms of EXP/Time relative to other quests. I can't imagine the frustration of doing this quest on a PvP server, however.

As a level 43 BM specced hunter, I easily got all the samples required in less than an hour, and only farmed the lower level creatures west and southwest of Gadgetzan. I just had to rely on riding my kodo and using Track Beasts to see what mobs were close by - tracking makes drop quests easier in general.

The only problem was that after getting all the samples, I didn't read the quest and hearthed back to Org, thinking that I had to deliver everything directly to UC. So I wasted a hearthstone cooldown and some flight money getting to and from Org back to Gadgetzan, but that was the only problem. Plus, the final reward upon returning to UC was nice (1+ gold and a vendable armour piece).

I had gotten the field testing kit earlier from a quest from UC. In the middle of Tanaris Field Sampling, I had to log. Next day, I log on and of course I have failed the quest. So I abandon the quest, and as well as deleting all my acceptable samples, it deletes my field testing kit as well. "Okay," I thought, "if it took away my FTK, I'm sure it'll give me another one when I accept this quest again." Wrong. After getting 10 wastewander water pouches this time (last time was 5), I got myself another power kit and started the quest again. No FTK was given to me. Malarkey!

You get 2 hours for this quest. I thought that was going to be plenty of time until I saw how horrid the drop rate for the Basilisk and Scorpid samples were. The Hyena samples were no problem. The other ones were sometimes 1 in 20 before they dropped. When I say drop I mean after you right-click on the "untested" sample you get a "good sample". What happens is that every one of the mobs you kill will drop a sample that you then have to right-click to "test". This is where the pitiful drop rate comes in for the Basilisk and Scopid samples. I did non-stop killing of the needed mobs and I only had 20 mins to spare. So don't mess around and start killing from the getgo.

As a lvl 52 Retribution paladin, this quest took me about 52 minutes with no competition for the mobs, not because it was hard, but because the acceptable sample proc rate is terrible.

I don't know if it's actually true, but it seemed that the slightly higher level mobs had a slightly higher chance to have acceptable samples. I did most of my hunting around the Abyssal Sands and it felt like I got the needed samples more often than from the mobs right around Gadgetzan.

5750 xp - not at all worth the time I put in.

Advice on how to do this with most efficiency? One word: Don't.

I did it as a level 51 druid (don't ask why), and god, it took me 45 frickin' minutes. I killed the mobs in no time, but that made it even more annoying since I had to kill that many more mobs. In lower levels I don't know if I could have done it on time.

From my point of view there are two types of annoying quests. There are those that are simply annoying, and those that just make you depressed. This was one of those.
