Did this last night (patch 1.6.1). I found it really quite easy, considering some of the comments that were on Anonymous and Anonymous.

Everybody needs to stay in one corner. We used the corner on the right as you enter the room. Our party makeup was protection warrior, mage (with instant AE of course), holy priest and two shamans with resto up to NS. Warrior had full +def tanking gear (the best ottainable outside MC), the other shaman had 7 elements + earthfury boots, the priest had full devout, I wore my +250 healing mail, and the mage had mostly magisters with a handful of other blues and greens.

The first wave will be non-elites, 12 of them or so. They all aggroed us at once, so this is what you bring your mage for. AoE, with heals on the mage.

We got little to no time to get out of combat after the first wave, so mash that level 55 water button, because as long as you start drinking in that few seconds, you can keep drinking until the next wave of ghosts are upon you.

The 2nd wave were all melee ghosts from memory, and they're elites. We kept stoneskin, earthbind, mana, health, GoA and windfury up at all times. Don't waste mana on magma and fire nova totems, it's of the utmost importance that the shaman(s) keep all their mana for when the priest goes OOM, which will happen very often. This wave wasn't particularly hard, as the ghosts for some reason didn't link all at once, meaning we could take them down almost one by one with good use of shackle.

The next wave, from memory, is the hard wave. Somewhere around 9-12 elite ghosts spawn in groups of three, and they all aggro you at once. Even if you range pull them from your corner, the other groups will run (float?) over to where the group you pulled were, then head straight for you. This wave is extremely hard, bordering on impossible. I hope you brought your ankhs. Our prot warrior is very skilled, and he held aggro on all of them. If you have a rogue a secondary warrior (or you, the shaman, if you have neither) use the 'target lowest health' hotkey, which is V or B by default I think, and have everyone assist that person to kill a target. DO NOT have the mage AoE. Kill as many targets as possible, and when you're about to wipe, which is very probable, run into the corner (I mean very corner, mash yourself up against that wall) and wait to die. Self-rez, and rez everyone. The quest will not fail if you wipe. Med up (you won't get aggro if you're in the corner) and pull the last few mobs, who will again link on you. We got 5 mobs down before we died the first time, so the last 4 or so were cake.

The final wave involves some caster ghosts who cast shadow bolt. Make sure the priest gives everyone shadow resist, and put down grounding totem.

After each wave, a named mob will come. The name is always "Aspect of ...". The final wave's named, "Aspect of Shadow" from memory, is the only one worth mentioning. He casts shadow bolt volley, and has a shield of some variety which is purgeable. He was really the only one we needed to concentrate for. What we did (cheap tactics 4tw) is to keep the nameds constantly shackled, and have our own spirit and mana/health totems regen us to full health. It takes a long time, but it can make the ensuing waves so much easier, considering you don't always get time to drink.

After these waves, the Darkreaver will spawn in the middle of the room. Med up and buff up, you have plenty of time. The boss looks somewhat like Baron Rivendare, and is quite fun to fight. He has a Balnazzar-esque mind control, and he always used it on one of our shamans, burning our nature's swiftnesses and healing himself. Mind control CAN be purged (use rank 1 purge so as to not knock of another buff) and can of course be dispelled by the priest. That's really the only interesting thing he did. He has a lot of HP and hits relatively hard, but nothing a skilled warrior and priest shouldn't be able to handle, with the shaman throwing the odd heal in. Put a searing totem down, there's no more mobs after this one so you don't have to worry about aggro. After he dies, the head is lootable and can be looted by more than one shaman. Link to the mob with loot table. He dropped Oblivion's Touch for us, which is the most awesome looking wand I've ever seen. But it's borked to attack as a melee weapon, so if you get it, you'll have to wait until 1.8 or 1.9 to have it fixed.

Turn in the head to the shaman trainer in Orgrimmar to receive the Helm of Latent Power, or post patch 1.7, the Skyfury Helm, which has a graphic similar to the earthfury helm, and stats:

13 strength
14 stamina
12 spirit
2% crit with spells
1% crit with melee

I did this the other day with 4 guildies, 1 warrior, 1 priest and 3 shamans, which I might add that none of us is MC geared.
We cleared the room, then picked the right side of the door (seen from when you enter). I placed the "Divination Scryer" in the center and then the spawns came, since we were standing in the corner only the first spawns aggroed at once.
Then the next waves were easy to pull so you dont need to fight all at once, only the linked ones, we just assisted the tank and took them down one by one.

Nobody died and I dont think anyone was close to dying either, we talked about it afterwards that we were supprised that some prople found this quest hard, just dont run around the room like a frenzied murlok and you should be fine.

Someone wrote somewhere that you should shackle everything that was named "Aspect of ..", good tip, worked excellent.

Here's a screenie of the three happy shamans who received the reward :)

Gah! Man, when I did this quest, it was bugged =(
The Shadowed Spirits (last wave mobs) just clogged up in 1 part of the Ossusary, and kept on spawning! There were tons! Seeing that, we decided to wait for a bit, strategise and stuff, then the Aspect of Shadow appears, so we kill it. But THEN Death Knight Darkreaver appears and the whole room aggros! We were owned. x_x But the crappy thing was, when we walked back to Scholomance, the Shadowed Spirits appeared at the instance entrance!
We were sooooo close, but it makes me happy that i've had a group get past the green ghosts.

Honeslty, this is the most overrated reward ever, this quest is so cumbersome and ive done it as a Paladin, and Paladins can AOE in these circumstances via blessings used, so they act like a mage with major armor, and it was still hard. That said is still possible but why? the pristine diamond on some servers would sell for around that same as that helm if it was BOE... that quest is stupid. Helm of Narv is way better and can be bought on some servers for the price of a Pristine diamond and this helm is only comparable to elements or a number of others you can run raids for, I have a L47 Shaman now and there is no chance im wasting my time on this quest in 10 levels, as a former Pally I thought id never have to 5 man Scholo to get there again and no chance im running it for this useless crap.

Before you attempt this in a raid, know that while you can trigger the event and get a blue drop from the boss, the head will not drop in raid. Someone told a guildmate it was raidable so while we were raiding there anyway we tried it.

curious to see what the new reward is.

If you didn't know...they suposedly improved the reward with patch 1.7 and shaman that have already completed the quest are supposed to talk to the quest turn in npc to get their new reward.

post here what it is! :P

As of 1.9 it seems that the reward for this quest is the actual Skyfury Helm rather than the Helm of Latent Power. This may have been the case pre 1.9 as well, I'm not sure.

Edit:
Oh I see now that someone below me noted the reward change. Reading skillz ftl.

Blizzard has changed the quest reward in the new patch. I am not sure how much it has been improved but if anyone wants to help me complete the quest on the test server, I would be happy to comment on the changes. Here is the quote from their patch notes:
"The Darkreaver Menace" quest has had its reward improved any Shaman who has already completed the quest should speak to Sagorne Creststrider in Orgrimmar to get their new reward.

I am a Paladin that had to do this parallel quest for my epic mount. You can read my instructions on how to finish it here
(Quest #7647) everything applies, but I believe it should help some of you trying to complete this quest.

Good luck!

For me the new reward seems like an odd mix of things. If you wanna go melee with it theres no agility on it, and if you want to go spell casting there's no intellect on it. I had seriously hoped that they had just put more intellect on the old version. To me at least that would have made more sence.

The Great Ossuary is where Rattlegore is, and all the Risen Machines or whatever they are called P

You need to clear the room and then put the Divination Scryer in the Middle to summon him.

There are 5 pretty hard waves first, then the Deathknight appears.

Havent been able to do it yet though, so have no idea what the reward is.

Paladins have a seal they can release to do the elites quite easily as they spawn (by quite i mean easier than without).

do shamans have a similar thing with totems in this situation to complete the quest?

has anyone actually done it yet?

I have done this quest... a fun but hard quest!
We started 5 men group: 2x Shammies Mage Rogue n Priest. I was Main Tank Shammy with 5.1K Armor and specced in 22/24/5.

First we picked SW corner of the room. With 2 Shammies, we had 8 totems to play with and plenty of heals. We pulled mobs into our corner from one by one, then later on group by group. The fight wasnt that hard until the last wave consisted of 10 elite spirits and Aspect of Shadow. Make sure the priest cast Shadow protection ON. There is an elite mob before the last wave, if u need to heal n mana up.. this is the time, shackle that mob until everyone ready for the last fight.

We dropped 8 totems down, included ground totem, I TANKED all mobs near our corner with priest shielded me. Other Shaman pulled 3 mobs toward Mage with chain-lightning. Priest SHACKLE the Aspect Of Shadow spirit, then Mage AOE 3 down while getting spam healed by Shaman. Rogue assisted my targets, we killed one at a time. Priest n other Shaman healed me like crazy. We survived the last wave, then Darkreaver charged in straight away - no time to med up. Our Priest died straight away... I tanked him for 20sec but we all out of Mana.. he killed me with 3 hits after that. Then our mage died soon after me. Rogue used Evasive to dodge his attack until Darkreaver's health was 10%, I used Ahkn to finish him off..with 39HP left on me, Rogue n other Shaman got only <3% HP left.. very close fight.
I'm quite happy with the epic reward! Very Challenging quest anyway!

Hmmn nice for enhancement I suppose, but not exactly worthy of being an epic.
It may seem a bit good getting 2 hats out of one quest at first(at least I assume you do as it says 'as an additional gift' in your pic) but consider that the pristine diamond is hardly cheap and you cant reuse the materials such as in the warlock epic mount quest.
