Vyrin's Revenge

Kill Ol' Sooty then show your handiwork to Daryl the Youngling at the Farstrider Lodge.
Ol' Sooty's Head

Description

I don't suppose you'd be interested in a little payback for His Boldness? Daryl does have some skill, it pains me to say.

A year ago, a large bear had been the target of the Farstrider Lodge, but none of the hunters had any luck with him. So, Daryl thought he'd try his hand against him. All he had to show for his effort was that ugly scar over his eye.

Kill the bear, and I'm sure even Daryl would be speechless for once.

The bear, Ol' Sooty, can be found around his lair in the hills over Thelsamar.

Ol' Snooty is a lvl 20 bear in a cave at 37,62, the climb to his cave starts at 40,67. A lvl 17 Mage and Priest had no problem with him, just make sure you clear around his cave 1st.

Why does everyone refer to Ol' Sooty as a "she". He's a guy! Just read the quest text and you'll see!

And BTW he walks from his cave and almost all the way down to the lake a couple of times an hour. If you can't find him just look around!

I just completed the 2 hunter quests and then the final kill of Ol' Sooty bear.&nbsp I'm a lvl 23 mage & needed some help w/ Sooty as I have weak defense/health.&nbsp Sooty is in or around his cave in mountains just south of Thelsamar.

The thing is a lv 20 Elite. This means about 1200 HP. I, (as a lv 19 Mage), simply don't have enough mana to solo...

hard but fun fight, have to use one mana potion..
just get your mp bless and full HP MP, grab sword and shield and start to fight him, when you need a heal, stun him with hammer and heal, continue fighting, and force heals pray for a dodge or parryng, continue fighting when you get again your hammer, stun it and heal full, you should be out of mp.. use pot, then when him is near to kill you use divine prot and heal you full, you should kill him.. need a bit of luck with dodges/parrying but you can solo that.

i soloed it with one lesser healing potion, tho i have cookies wand... You just dot him and wand him then fear and heal... dwarfs and humans use racials to heal. Hard but doable - I DIDN'T HAVE LVL 18 SKILLS EVEN THO I WAS 18. Oh and he isn't in the cave, he's south from the path to the cave on a little opening. - Appeal @Azjol-Nerub

Sooty is usually in his lair at the top of the path, but can often be found in the clearing just beyond the bottom of the path also. Be careful -- he always has a lvl 18-19 Bear Patriarch in attendance when in the clearing. The Patriarch will attack you when you go for Sooty. I tried 3x to get Sooty there without success.
He is easier to kill when he's in his lair at the top of the path. Kill the level 16 bear on the path, kill the 18-19 Patriarch outside of Sooty's cave. (He's far enough away so you don't draw Sooty.)
Sooty is difficult for a similar level player to solo, but not impossible. I took him as a lvl 20 hunter with a 19 cat -- he was showing as a lvl 21 Elite. Laid a fire trap at the entrance to the cave and hit him with an arrow to bring him out. As soon as he hit the trap I sicced my pet on him and started going full bore on him with the bow. He killed my pet and came after me having been taken down to about 25% health. I used fear on him which caused him to run off and went to town on him with the bow, I got about 5-6 secs with the fear and he came back after me, a few more bowshots and a couple of melee rounds and he was dead.
Not easy, but not bad either.

EXTREMELY easy for a hunter, in my case. I was lvl 19 hunter, with lvl 18 cat, and Ol' Sooty showed up as lvl 20 elite. Clear out the bears on the path leading up, and any wandering around the entrance. For my strategy, I first place a immolation trap at the entrance, then used arcane shot+serpent sting, and sent my pet at it (Without having growl on, only bite). Fired concussion shot, jumped off the hill, and started shooting down Ol' Sooty while it came after me. If it gets too close before concussion shot timer is up, use a macro containing Raptor Strike Rank 3, Wing Clip Rank One, and Mongoose Bite Rank 1. Run AT it, and click the macro. With a training sword of agility, I can hit 54+ with it. Run past the bear, and when on tracking you see it's far enough away, jump and turn around. Fire concussion shot, serpent sting (Should be gone by now I think) arcance, and so forth. If you want to be safe, bring a lesser healing potion in case it dazes you when you try to wing clip it. I had Corporal's Insignia, so no problem for me. Killed him in 3- minutes, if you ever get low on health, wing clip/concussion shot, and let your pet auto cast growl. Keep running until you see on tracking that the bear is no longer following you. Also, notice that your pet SHOULD be at full heatlh, so just beat the bear down, and quest done. Good way to practice kiting, and use more skill than just sending in your pet, and shooting at the mob. If you're not sure if you can kill elites BEFORE attacking Ol' Sooty, try out the mercenaries quest. All of the Mo'Grosh guys are elites, so you can practice there.

Don't forget to eliminate the lvl 17 patriarch in front of the cave opening we took too long and he spawned, then killed us just before we completed the elite.

Solo at 17, my Hunter got destroyed by Ol' Sooty. I ran off and did some other stuff to get to 18 and also worked on my engineering a bunch. Between reaching level 18 and adding a bunch of new engineered gear (new goggles, gun, scope, and target dummies), I was able to solo Ol' Sooty!

I laid a trap and a target dummy on top of each other and pulled Ol' Sooty to them. He sat there attacking the dummy and burning on the trap (with me and my pet unloading on him) until he was about half health, then the dummy dropped and I sicked my pet on him. My poor pet died when Ol' Sooty was almost dead so I meleed him the last little bit. I was holding my breath at the end because both Ol' Sooty and myself were practically dead but I outlasted him!

Solo'd with 17 warlock. I didnt fear early enough and lost my void, worse I didnt sacrifice in time so I didnt get the shield. After void died I kept applying dots and fearing while bandaging myself, using my healthstone and 1 healing potion. When he was quite low on health I started shadowbolting but dots eventually killed him.

I have pretty decent gear for an average 17, its all green for what you can get at that lvl and most is +intellect or +stamina (most is 'eagle' gear). No blues though, a ring had +4 spell hit rating so that might have helped with all my fears landing. Dots landing were like 8/10. I could have played it alot better but I was tired, so even with a buncha mistakes I killed him.

edit - cleared a wide area first so fears didnt pull more bears.

Yesterday i solo'd it with my 20 pally. You don't have to kill the bears outside because if you attack Sooty they don't come. He is really hard to kill, 3 times holy light(healing) and then he died, nice experience for bringing head to daryl and to vryin 2250 exp together :D

Went down on the first as a level 18 affliction warlock (with lvl16 skills):

Had my Voidwalker out in case I needed to Sacrifice it (didn't). Chain fear + dot, and wand when I had the time. I avoided using any drains or bolts to conserve mana. Had to bandage during one fear because I'd mistimed due to lag. Took fairly long to kill 'im but it standard chain fear+dot did the job.
