A Recipe For Death

Retrieve Apothecary Berard's journal from Pyrewood Village and take it to Apothecary Renferrel at the Sepulcher.
Berard's Journal

Description

You can be of further service to the Royal Apothecary Society, <name>.

When Arugal cast his wretched magic on the forest, he cursed one of our most promising members, Apothecary Berard. Now a mindless servant of Arugal, Berard is useless to us. But his findings might prove to be of worth. He was studying an ancient plague that killed off all the aquatic life in Lake Lordamere ages ago.

Retrieve Berard's Journal from his study in the Pyrewood Village Inn and take it to Apothecary Renferrel.

This journal is found at 43,73

There is a back way to get to the inn. There is a break at 47,75

Once you reach the inn there are people inside ranging from 14-16 Elites.

Once you reach the bookshelf , Berard will be standing next to it ( Lvl 16 Elite )

Hope this helps.

If you go straight into Pyrewood Village, just keep heading straight. The Inn is the building right behind the fountain. The bookcase needs to be opened, and it's two rooms off to the right at the top of the stairs.

Several questions:

1. Can I enter the village from the back side and is that a better route in?

2. What level do you recommend to solo this - I'm currently 18 and it seems tough even at this level (based on my first attempt).

3. Is it possible to sealth one's way to the inn and upstairs?

Thanks.

Stealth to the upper level of the inn, kill the 3 guards, then stealth in the back room, sap the apothecary, grab the books, and sprint out.&nbsp Or you can kill the apothecary if you want, he's level 16+.&nbsp I accomplished this at level 19.

This is a fun quest. I did this as a L19 Mage. The guy who posted "Got to the left and walk behind the buildings" was right. As a mage you just need to killed two of the guards walking around the front gate. Then high tail it behind the buildings on the left. Once you get behind the Inn, kill the guild between the Inn and the house on the right. Watch for wandering guards and kill 1-2 of them if you can. Once inside the Inn, there is a caster just inside. Freeze or Polymorph him and then run upstair and end the 3rd furthest to the right. You'll see hairy Apothecary Bernard in the room. The guards from the other rooms will aggro you and kill you in Bernard's room. There's no way to avoid this death soloing, unless you're a Rogue. If you're a Rogue, you can just SAP Benard while Stealthed and take the Journal.

Once you come back, rez all the way in the back of the room, so none of the guards outside or in the other rooms with aggro you. Heal immediately with a potion and when Bernard attacks, Polymorph his ass into a sheep and then take Benard's Journal from his book shelf. Then Hearthstone back to U.C. If Bernard come out for the sheep. Polymorph him again and then Hearthstone.&nbsp Piece of cake.

I started off just as others said:&nbsp get inside through the break in the south wall.&nbsp Hug the wall 'till you get to the inn.

There's another way to get in to the inn, however.&nbsp Instead of running in through the front door, you can go to the side of the inn closest to the south wall and get in there.&nbsp You'll see a few windows with ledges on them.&nbsp Jump on the one to the left.&nbsp Get as close as possible to the wall.&nbsp Hover your mouse around the wall in front of you, until you hover over 'Wooden Chair.'&nbsp Right click, and it'll teleport you inside.

I did this as a level 15 Warlock.&nbsp I went inside through the wall, feared the first guy I saw, ran upstairs feared a few up there.. Sadly, died.&nbsp I went back as a ghost into the room where Berard is.&nbsp Got into the corner, resurrected, feared Berard, opened the bookcase, grabbed the book.. Then died again.&nbsp But I got the book!

After patch 2.3, this quest is no longer tagged as Group, making it look like Blizzard nerfed it as they did with many other former Group quests. Don't be mislead: the mobs are still Elite, so it's not exactly very solo friendly at the level you obtain it. For priests it't definitely possible at level 14 the way stasko1 described, but only if you are willing to die three or four times.

Use south east entrance.
Died twice to reach the room.
(Could have made it with 1 run but i didn't know where it was)
Rez between the guard outside and Berad

*Psychic Screm*!

It'll take some time before they get back, one of the guys actually aggroed another guard next room but I was still able to get it and run almost out of the house. (whcih was not necessary) Rez and walk behind the houses along south wall. shield up and get prepared to scream again on your way out.

There is an easier way to get to the inn.
First, go to the Shadowfang keep. Before the entrance, there is a drawbridge. Jump off it. You will take about 200hp damage. Heal it, and go towards Pyrewood village. There is a big hole in the wall and only 2-3 guards between you and the inn. Figure out the rest yourself.

Went upstairs as a spirit and resurected, feared the Berard and looted the journal, then died and resurrected at a spirit healer. Might be a bad way to do it, but xp is xp:P

Why do so many people have to explain in painstaking detail how they completed the quest? People need to know:

1) The cords, or n.s.e.w. directions from a wellknown area to the location of the quest.

2) Simple and effective instructions to best complete quest

3) Your lvl and if soloed.

4) Where to turn in quest in case someone forgot.

5) I suppose if it includes collecting items then a drop rate is appropriate.

Please do not repeat what has already been said over and over again in previous posts. Some people would like to find what there looking for quickly and get back to the game, rather than deal with 50 posts all saying the same thing!

I did it like this as a lvl 16 mage: to the left of the entrance of the village stands a hill i jumped from the hill up on the wall then to the nearest house and then i roof jumped all the way to the inn. Ran in died ressed in Berards room spam sheeped him (i aggroed a sentry when was i was taking the book so i had to frost nova him) ran back the same way on the roof ressed and jump over the wall and ran home.
(at the third house the town hall or something u gotta go to the left and run on the wall abit)

Warlock lvl 18:
Just get to the inn somehow, run or fight ur way there. I prefer running and dieing.

Resurrect in the corner of stairs, summon voidwalker and kill the center rooms mob first and then head for the Apothecary, kill the mob in the room before his room and IF you get the aggro from the apothecary just put ur voidwalker take his aggro and open bookshelf, run down, sacrifice voidwalker and run away from the village. I used a healthpot when my shield faded but I didn't even had to use it for real, just in case :p

Creep in the hole in the southern side of the fence and hug the fence all the way to the inn. Pull the mobs 1 by 1 and kill them. I just used a 22-41 dmg wand and shield on myself. Heal when I get low. Make sure to aggro them and then draw them away from others so that when they run they don't attract more.

Once in the inn you can carefully pull them 1 by 1 and kill them. For the journal run in, Psychic Scream and IMMEDIATELY shift-right-click the bookcase.

Once you have the book, shield, heal, and wait for the scream to recharge. Psychic Scream once more and IMMEDIATELY use your hearth stone.

Far less time consuming than dying over and over. More fun too.

i ve just managed to solo this with my alt, a female prist 19lvl.As kattla said above(nice description btw :)..thnx..)there's a hill outside village. From hill jumped to the fence and consequently to the nearest roof. After 2 roof-walkings i reached a high building and donw again nearby the fence which i followed until i got behind the house i had to go into(koords are 43,79,in 2nd floor,2nd room to the right of stairs). There i used power word shield to manage get into the house without get killed by the 15lvl elite guard.Actually using psychotic scream(priest's fear),i managed to have my corpse exactly in front of the library with journal!!!...I res, feared the 2 guards(15&16elites),took journal, powered word shield again and renew so that i was able to die for 2nd time exactly in middle of stairs where i could res and teleported back to undercity in safe without agroing no1.As a priest i dont believe there's a better way to solo this.(dear angelflonne, i can't believe that u pulled only single mobs and thats why there arent any single mobs inside the hole village.Perhaps u confused).

ROGUES ---

This can be pretty easy and you dont actually need to kill anything to do it.

Stealth into the village and find the inn at around 43,73. Sneaking inside and up the stairs wont always be a problem (there was only two mobs in there when I went). Go into the third door from your left. Sap the guard (giving you about 20 seconds) and then run in to Berard's room. Slumber powder him and half inch (pinch) the journal.

Then peg it outside, dropping back to stealth if you can (evasion worked for me).

If you die after getting the book (I got stuck on the doorway and killed) then take your ghost round the back of the inn and resurect there. You can go into stealth mode again and sneak around the wall of the village to get out.

Directions if you want to fight the least:

At village entrance take a left. Hug the wall all the way to the back of the village. You'll come to a ledge, jump down. You'll come to big tree, maneuver around and keep going. You will hear the ocean when you get to the right place.

Go to the front of the lodging, kill what you need to get in. Enter, this should be an Inn with the sound of talking and dishes clanking. Kill to get to the stairs. Go up the stairs and take your first right. Kill Pyrewood Sentry in anter room. Keep going to back bedroom. Kill Apothecary Berard. Loot his bookshelf.

I completed this solo as a 16 priest.

The book is in the inn-like building, in right-hand room on the second floor. It is guarded by a 16 elite.

I went in the gate, the around behind the buildings to the left, and into the inn. I was able to pull single mobs the whole way.

Not too bad.

Did this as lvl 15 undead priest:

went from shadowfang keep bridge.. jump down and sneak behind the stables. Suicide ran inside to his room in the back and died.

Came back as a ghost to his room and used psychic scream to buy some time and shield of fortitude to loot the book from the shelf before dying again.

Death can be a part of the plan: Quest complete.

I just finished this with my 15th level rogue. I'll say up front that I got lucky. Stealthed to the inn and got to Berard's room without incident. Hid as far as I could in the corner and prayed he wouldn't see me when I clicked on the bookshelf. He saw me... Hit him with Gouge and opened the bookcase while he was stunned. Ran for my life with sprint and evasion on. LOL If I was thinking, I might have tried to sap him and then open the bookcase. he was Elite, but only 16. Easy really, did the quest in pyrowood as lvl 19 mage with a lvl 19 priest.

We just sneaked behind all the buildings (there is an opening in the stockade if go left around the village instead of entering through the entrance). When we finally found the inn we just went in and took care of the 3-4 elites in there (they are seperated so it's a piece of cake) and voila... we got the journal and without fighting any unnecessary elite mobs.

Solo'd as a 19 undead warlock: Worked my way down the main path straight to the Inn, and then tried running as fast and far as possible into the Inn and up the stairs with the voidwalker attempting to agro everything. Died before I got to the stairs of course, then ghosted back in and rez'd upstairs in Berards room. This turned out to be a bad idea as he killed me rather quickly. I then rez'd on the stair mid landing, summoned big blue and picked off all the elites upstairs one by one untill just Berard was left.
While bigblue hammered away at him, I grabbed the book and then aided my big blue buddy...easy as pie.
