Recovered Tome (5)
Worn Leather Book

Description

Those beastly ogres now reside within Alterac's ruins, and I shudder to think what they're doing with the precious books still there. You must recover what you can!

Enter the Ruins of Alterac and search for tomes looted by the ogres. Get whatever you can find and bring them to me, but also seek out one book in particular: The Arm of Gri'lek. It contains ancient troll lore that I must learn, and the Ruins of Alterac was the last known location of an intact copy of this book.

This quest is easily soloable as lvl 34, regardless of your class. I've done it as rogue, druid, warrior and hunter. As rogue and druid it's of course easier, since you have stealth, but the way you do it is basically the same:

Enter the ruins from the WEST, not on the road. Go to the Growless cave (38,68) and continue around the ruins clock-wise. There are some lvl 32-34 yetis roaming there, no big deal. Avoid or crush. When you are directly west of the ruins you will see a part of the wall with a hole in it. Enter there and very very carefully negotiate the ogres in there. They are 38-39 elites. I walk along the northern-most mountainside inside the compound. Your goal is *not* the main building, but the smaller house with a belltower. There is one ogre that'll probably aggro on you. If he does, run behind the target building and continue along the mountainside until he drops, or simply stand behind the house and let him smash you. Resurrect on that spot, behind the house.
From above, the house looks like a "T" with a short base.

X marks the spot you're looking for. Move the cursor along the wall until you see it shift into the "use"-cursor. That's the bookshelf you're looking for. Simply right-click it to get the book, right through the house wall! Negotiate your way out from the compaund the way you came. If you get aggro, make a run for it and die in a good spot (there is a space in the wall you got through at its northen-most end where you can exit and the ogres won't follow you outside)

Still works with 1.12 as of Sep 20th 2006.

My group of 2 lvl31 paladins, a 33, and 34 paladin completely this quest without much difficulty. Just take the road north from southsore in Hillsbrad and you find the Alterac ruins. Kill the non-elite ogres wandering outside until you all have your dirty knuckles (bounty quest from marshal in Southshore) and your 5 tomes. Then take your time and single pull the elite ogres(with what we had it took a few minutes to take em down, but had the hp and mana between the 4 of us to survive easily). Cut a path to the large building still intact straight down the road. Go in, you will see a book case on the back wall...loot the Worn Leather Book and you are done. A 40 elite ogre will spawn named Mudrake. Alone we took him down in about 7 minutes just chipping away. All in all....and easy 7k quest.

Simple quest really if you are a NE hunter. Or if you're just quick in general. I saw a war going down so I decided to take the advantage and run past everybody like Forrest Gump and run the heck out. Needless to say that was the easiest Elite quest I have ever done. Can't miss the building that the book is in. Straight ahead and the bookshelf is on the far wall. How you get out is at your own discretion. Psssst. Hearthstone!

You can actually solo this quest without even dieing. I did this at level 34 with no problem and no deaths. To do this go in the building with the book case. When the level 40 elite ogre aggros on you run outside of the building and take a right and go around the side of the building and then run westward along the side of the hill away from the building. Do not attack the ogre so it loses aggro. Once it does, the ogre will not have a clear path back to it's starting location. It will then freeze and become temporarily evasion bugged. As soon as you see it stop, run back to the building and you should have just enough time to grab the book before the ogre is ported back inside the building.

Though it's an elite quest, this is solo'able as a Rogue. I killed the non-elite ogres easily for the 5 tombs. Afterwards, I just stealthed past the elite ogres all the way until I reached the last quest item (It's in a house see Cdubbs' guide).

Then all I did was Distract + Sap the lv40 elite ogre, ran to the bookcase and loot the book. I used Vanish to remove all aggro from that ogre. Then just stealth back past the elite mobs and go back to Southshore. If your sap missed, run a bit, Vanish, and wait 5 minutes for the cooldown timer and just retry.

I solo'ed it as lv36 Rogue, was a fun quest.

As of patch 2.0, taking the book through the wall is no longer possible.
Still soloed the quest as lvl 32 paladin. Died a total of 0 (zero) times. As I pass the first ogres on my way to the house, I bubbled up and ran in behind the building as I've done before, then I waited for the Forbearance debuff to wear out. Then I ran into the house, aggroed the ogre and let him beat my other shield while I took the book, Hammered him and ran out.

As a hunter you run in and pull the ogre into a freezing trap. Have your pet tank him while you get the book. As the trap drops, arm another one to catch him as you run away. Love the new Hunter v. 2.0!

Okay, first off, GREAT advice in here guys!

Go to the Southshore inn and set your hearth to it.

When you get to the ruins, kill the first ogres you meet (level 34-35, easy to kill) until you have all your tombs.

I approached the ruins and when I came to the entrance and all those elites, I walked around to the right and around the mountain you see there on the right until I came to the hole in the wall mentioned at tloc 43,40.&nbsp I didn't jump through the hole though, instead I went around the wall on the left side of it.&nbsp There is a narrow gap between the left end of the wall and the hill, you can move through it with some jumping.&nbsp Once through, move around the hill on your left until you're close to the schoolhouse (looks like the one in Moonbrook (westfall)), you can't miss it.&nbsp Watch for two elite ogres there, be patient and wait for them to move out of your way then run across to the right side of the schoolhouse and around to the back, just jump over the hill at the back right corner and get close to the wall and start moving your mouse around, you'll find it, a gear will appear under the window.&nbsp I got it that way and it is currently Feb 28th, 2006, so it isn't fixed.

Now use your hearth to get back to southshore and you're all set!

I done this and didn't die once, the only fighting I did was the lower level ogres for my tombs, they were easy.

Easiest elite quest evar! =D

Everyone calls this location a "small house", and just for clarity's sake I'd like to point out that it is often the model of the town hall. Hopefully this will avoid confusion for people looking for a little house. ;)

thanks guys!

May 24th 2006
i just did this with my level 31 Warlock

basically... u can run all the way to the back where the Yeti are

(if you're a warlock, cast soulstone resurrection to save you the long walk back to your corpse)

When you reach the Yeti..
there's a gap between the mountain and the wall @ coordinates 34,47

jump through, go straight ahead, turn left before the building - the corner is right there! @ 38,46

(i like the description one of the guys above gave - the logical spot where you'd heal)

stand in the corner (you naughty child, you.. lol) and the cog symbol comes up on the left side

nb: i forgot to hearth to southshore.. but if i die, i guess i'll just res at the spirit and suffer the resurrection penalty :p

The coordinates are 39, 48.&nbsp I soloed this (lvl 34) effectively by running into the ruins and dying -- working my way to the schoolhouse and recovering in the schoolhouse foyer.&nbsp If you're a hunter, distract the ogre with your pet and slow him down with a frost trap and you should get the worn leather book.&nbsp Granted you'll want to revive in the graveyard, but it worked for me.

The schoolhouse is straight ahead through the gates, a large building with three rooms. The first two are empty, and in the large back room is the 40 elite ogre and the bookcase with the leather book. It is more difficult, I think, to get through the mobs in the ruins before the building than to actually defeat the 40. It took me so long to kill them as a 39 Paladin that they kept respawning, and I finally died close enough to the building that I resurrected inside it. Killed the guy inside on the second try. This quest was yellow for me, but it should have been orange judging by the difficulty.

This quest is still easily done without fighting the 40 elite inside. Go inside the building, and pull Muckrake outside. Exit the building to the left and hug the hill, and Muckrake will follow. After a short chase, Muckrake will de-aggro, but his pathing will malfunction and he won't renter the building, but rather he'll stand there out of combat. He'll remain outside the building long enough for you to go inside, loot the book, and leave.

The Shaman way is simple - just draw aggro, draw the beastie into the second small room (where the door to the outside is) and drop a stoneclaw. Then dash back in and collect your book. You'll likely die either escaping or just after you collect the book, but hey, it's on your mantle.

u can get behind that building (even by dying all the way 2 there) and from outside the backwall of the building u can right click the book (u can c the yellow gear icon while moving on the wall). so u get it and run away and that's it.

above post is correct...&nbsp you CAN click on gear icon from the back of the building.&nbsp when standing behind the schoolhouse (facing the building), it is on the left section in the corner.&nbsp as far as seeing a bookshelf while dead ---&nbsp you cant.&nbsp in fact, quite often you cannot see a quest item in ghost form, tho it never hurts to try.&nbsp :)

Tomes are an easy drop from the Ogrest at and around Gallow's Corner (49,62) in Alterac. The book is at the coordinates stated above and like everyone has been saying, sneak around the backside of the house and open the bookcase through the wall.

First let me say the screen shot is "excellent". But 1st: the mobs 34-36(non-elite) at entrance drop the first 5 books needed. Pulled 1 at a time. Got all 5 after about 15 kills. Again: all in front area.
Second: the bug is fixed. I worked my way around the outskirts of the ruins. Using the ramp where the alchemy supply guy is and around to back of schoolhouse. Got on ledge&nbsp and checked ALL the walls to pull thru wall. No sucess. SO--I ran around to front entrance sheeping and arcane explosion as i went. Found bookcase (See upper screenshot) Verified book was there and died.
Ran back Res'd on side of bookcase. Sheeped 40 Elite. Got book and ported to SW. Hope info helps and again: GREAT screen shot. (Loc 38,46 is correct)

Select the named Mob throught the wall.
Rage up till its maxed out at 20.
Run to the bookcase while letting the 40 Elite beat on you.
When you have enough Rage to Intimidating Shout (Fear), Let it loose.
Click on bookcase and loot quest Item Book.
Run around right side of house and around the back, loosing agro.

Worked for me at level 37, hope it helps.

First thing on this quest, if you haven't already done so, is go get the Knucklebone quest near South Shore's town hall. You're going to be killing the ogres anyway so double dip.
The Ogres just north of Tarren Mills drop both the Knucklebones and the 1st 5 books, finishing 1 quest and leaving just the one tome left to find.
After killing those ogres path around to the right and then north till you find a section of wall on the left. Here is the "crack" mentioned before.
Loc: 43,41
Not actually a crack. It's a gap between the hillside and the left end of the wall.
Go through and you're behind a tower with a mage inside. Ignore the mage, he won't agroe. With the wall at your back and the tower to the front go around left 'till you can see a schoolhouse looking building across the street. That's your target.
As a 36 Hunter, I had to kill one 36 Elite ogre to clear the path, then ran straight across the street to the right side of the schoolhouse, jumped aorund to the back and started moving cursor over the back wall. Get close to the wall and you'll see the cursor change about 2 ft. above the stone part 1 third of the way from the corner on the right.
Clicked, looted, hearthstoned out.

At level 36 I gained 3550 XP and 150 to my Stormwind Reputation.

It's January 9th, 2006, 12:39pm EST, the 1.9 patch has been installed for a few days now and I just got the book through the back wall.&nbsp Some people are getting thrown off I think because the back wall isn't straight.&nbsp There's part which jets out.&nbsp When you're looking at the front of the building, go around the right side.&nbsp I died on the front steps, then res'd after walking around the building to the right.&nbsp Go into the logical corner around back where you'd res so as to not aggro any mobs, the place where you can clearly sit and eat before getting killed and turn toward the wall and try there.&nbsp I was right in the corner and standing in the corner I got the sprocket symbol instantly.&nbsp So, just to be extra clear, I was in kind of a pocket with two walls being the back two walls of the building and the third and fourth side being a hill.&nbsp You really have to jump to get out of this pocket, but you can get the book through the back wall easily here, I plan on dying and ressing to return it now.

I tried all the tips, but it does seem like it's not possible to do it from the back of the schoolhouse anymore. I just didn't get a cog at all.

I made my way into the schoolhouse as a lvl 36 Mage, died right at the bookcase. After I resurrected I poly'd the Lvl40 elite, took the book, let myself die and rezzed at the healer hehe.

Good advice from all though, thanks. :)
