Singing Blue Crystal (10)

Description

The Venture Company has a string of operations through Stranglethorn which keeps hard-working goblins, like me, from making honest gold! Please, you must help me!

The Venture Company is mining near the Crystalvein Mine to the north. They can't get into the mine because of all the basilisks, but they're still able to dig up Singing Crystals from the surrounding hills.

Take their crystals from them, and show them they don't have the run of the jungle.

And... um... bring me those crystals as proof!

There are a couple "types" of goblins there. This quest can become difficult really quick because:
- The goblins respawn fast
- They have a ranged fire (dynamite) attack
- They're small and hard to see and it's easy to pull 2
- There are "Supervisor" type mobs that wander the entire area, once again making multiple pulls (and death) easy if you don't watch closely

If you are soloing, I recommend staying out of the back cave area. You'll easily get overcome by respawns if you aren't killing fast enough. The quest is doable by staying on the outside area of the camp, and just moving left to right and killing the outer most mobs.

The goblins you need to kill in this quest are NOT the ones on the far north end of Stranglethorn as you might think. They are located just south of the Bali'Amah ruins, east of the main trail. There are some hills south of the ogre mound, yet west of the Zul'Mamwe ruins. You'll find numerous "Venture Company Strip Miners" as well as "Foremen", and other goblins in the area. They are grouped fairly tight together, so multiple-add pulls are common. Most of these goblins are 41 and above. There are also Venture Co. Tinkerers who will spawn mechanical pets during a fight, so be prepared. However, every goblin that is 40 or higher can potentially drop the crystals.

You may wish to watch out for Shadowmaw Panthers getting to location 41, 41. They and Stranglethorn Tigresses are skulking about.

The dynamite ranged attacks are a pain if you're in a group try and remain split up so that not everyone gets their spell interrupted! The dynamite can distract you long enough that the goblin can close the distance and start hitting you. I was taking between 190 - 220 damage on average from those attacks.

I would reiterate that the respawn rate here is *scary*. And the drop rate of crystals is low enough to become a little frustrating.

So poeple can find this location with out the use of cosmo like addons. The goblins are located on a set of hills that are situated as follows.
East of the road, south of the Balia'Mal ruins, West of the Zul"mamwe ruins, and north of Crystalvein Mine. The area between the road and the hills has tigerress roaming all over it. Drop rate is 1 crystal for ever 3-4 kills. But every goblin there can drop a crystal.

I appreciate all the posts because I would have spent hours killing those dumb basilisks on the assumption that this actually had anything to do with the Crystal Vein mine. Basilisks are OK for grinding but only if you're a skinner. Half of the ones I whacked dropped nothing, nada, zippo but the skins are worth 4-6S apiece at the AH. They also have this annoying "invisible stun" trick, where you've been stunned but don't know it until you try to do something to them. Very annoying for casters like my druid.

As the previous posters have said, take out the outlying goblins and try not to aggro the others because they sometimes come out in twos & threes, which is annoying at best and can be fatal to us leather & cloth armor guys. Fortunately the druid's travel form is good for escaping if you're not being stunned to death.

I found the crystal drops to be about 1 in 5 but the goblins dropped lots of other stuff like 2S, silk cloth, and a 1-handed sword (BoE-lvl 41) that the vendor paid 45S for. Not bad.

Edit:(7-2007) Can't believe I'm still here but where else would I be?

I have since done this quest with several other classes. It's neither easy nor really a lot of fun, and the rewards (unless you are looking for the specific items) are not worth the aggravation and armor repair bill.

But what I've had some luck with is saving the quest until you are 42 or 43, at which point it becomes a lot easier and even a little more satisfying as you mash these obnoxious twerps into the dirt and flatten their dime-store, erector-set robots. Not fun yet but....

Answer:
&nbsp Just north of the arena, there will be two paths going to the right.&nbsp These lead to the Crystalvein mine.&nbsp DON'T go there, instead go just north of the paths and along the hillside you'll see them.&nbsp Careful though, they tend to stay within ear shot of another.&nbsp Solod this at 40, not bad.&nbsp Although being a hunter and throwing on Track Humanoids helped.

40,43 Is location.
Non cosmos directions.

Go north on trail past arena.. Head east through tigers and you will barely see the miners.&nbsp They are mining in hills all around and you may not see them with the valleys.&nbsp They call out for help and throw dynamite, so if you can pull them do so!&nbsp I am a 42 warlock and never died, but pulled 3 twice and barely survived. They hit hard. Some of the miners have a little robot that also attacks that are level 40.&nbsp The miners are level 40,41,42.&nbsp If you follow the trail up you will go into a camp of them and after that into a mine. There are 3 miners in there. There are no shards on ground, just on drops from miners.&nbsp They also drop broken lanterns and lots of silk.&nbsp

As a point, I had to kill 5 mobs in a row. One strip miner, then a tinkerer and his pet and then a second tinkerer and his pet, which spawned before the first pair were dead. Ran out of mana and had to wand a pet in the middle of the fight because I'd already used a mana potion and I needed the shadow bonus for a kill to regen mana. Singles were not hard for a L44 priest to kill, but the group of 4 right after I killed one was. Post 2.3, took about 40 kills to get 10 crystals. I was on the path, the advice about pulling them is right on.

These guys are the nastiest, most unrelenting mobs thus far in the game --- and they don't get much worse until maybe Searing Gorge.&nbsp They come out of nowhere, some with their little robots, throw bombs at you from hiding, and have a poor drop rate.&nbsp Even the little laugh is annoying. And if you try to outrun them, you'll run into shadow panthers and&nbsp tigers while they throw bombs at you to the road.&nbsp This was my third character to encounter them, and I concluded that not every, single quest has to be done!

I was a 41 rogue and I solo'd this quest pretty easy. I know I could've solo'd it just AS easy if I was a few levels lower.

1. You don't actually have to go INTO the camp, just outside by the hills. It's just north of the mining vein, not actually in the vein. So if you see a bunch of Basilisks, you're too far south.

2. Equip your melees with 2 poisons:
a) crippling poison so when they try to run they won't get as far
b) with deadly/wound poisons so they die quicker and when they try to run, they'll be "poisoned to death"

3. If it LOOKS like one might aggro while you're attacking another one, take precautions and sap the goblin and see what the other one close by does. After you sap (and the other goblin close doesn't aggro), let your energy refill, backstab, sinister strike until you get 5 combo points, kidney shot or eviserate depending on how low they are and how worried you are they'll aggro another guy.

If you're only attacking one guy and the other guy doesn't see you, ambush/rupture, sinister strike > 5cp, then eviserate or kidney shot. Easy as pie.

you have to be ready for these guys to run, use any slow/stun/entangling abilities your class has...If one does run, kill it as fast as possible and then get as close to the next mob he aggro'd* and pull that mob out into the open in case of running.
*You need to get really close to the next aggro'd mob because theres a very specific range at which they can use their dynamite ability which takes off around 200 hit points on my level 40.

37 Druid - I did this quest at first by myself and it wasn't so bad. I just stayed on the outskirts and kept tracking on so I wouldn't be pulling more than one. The first six goblins I killed, I got a crystal each time. I ended up grouping someone in the end, but I completed this quest in about 40 minutes.

Maybe my low leveled increased the drop rate, because the person I was grouping with (43) only got one in the time span that I got four.

This is actually a very productive grinding quest for under level 41 questers. At level 39 I banged out four experience bars during the quest and did something like two gold in miscellaneous looted goodies. True, the drop rate for the crystals is lousy, but it was probably good that it wasn't faster as this quest is more profitable than a lot of others. It is boring, but when you consider travel time for quicker quests and this one is probably worth two faster ones. Keep the following things in mind for this quest:

1. Be patient and work the perimeter. The miners respawn quickly. If you enter into the mining hills you liable to get nailed by a respawn, plus you can get double teamed because you can't always see those little guys behind the hillocks.

2. Leave the tinkers alone and avoid engaging them, especially if you're a caster. The little robots that travel with them pack a punch, plus they can't be drained or feared, so nuking is the only option and you get nothing out of them and killing them will drain you.

3. Be mindful of what's behind you as this is a panther and tiger area and while the tigers usually don't get in too close to the area you're working, the panthers do, so if you're not minding what's behind you it might just bite you.

4. The miners will heave a stick of dynamite when they're aggroed and even though it isn't lethal, it's not hard to avoid if you know it's coming. As a caster, here's what I did and it worked very well. Aggroed from a distance with COA and immediately backed up and launched my Voidwalker. The dynamite always fell short of me and beyond my pet. Drain tanking the miners was easy with very little health or manna bleed.

Just be patient and realize that if you're below the recommended quest level you should profit by this quest, both by goodies and progress towards the next level.

Its like other people said, the droprate is quite low and they tend to run and agro others without some careful stuns.
Not to mention the Tinkers are annoyingly good with their little robot friends.

Soloed it as a level 39 rogue, without any serious difficulty (just lots of annoying bits!)
