Training the Beast

Speak to Jocaste in the Cenarion Enclave, in Darnassus.

Description

You now have the power to tame a pet, but you must also gain the skills to train it.

Travel to Darnassus. There you must speak to one of our most revered hunters, Jocaste. She will give you the ability to train your new pet, so make haste.

While Jocaste may seem stern, she is always pleased to see another hunter rising through the ranks. Treat her with respect and she will return in kind. Good luck, <name>.

Few pointers for the new pet owners :)

Do the taming quests before training.

You do not have to use all 3 rods, one sucessful tame and if you open your quest window you will see the completed notation, travel back you your npc and get the next quest. For the elves the 3 tames were spider, bird and cat. The type of spider you need can be found right outside of Dolnaar, the cat and bird however are found closer to the gates of Darnassus, I found mine right outside the gates.

Be at full health when you begin your tame, no one can assist you, heal you or touch the animal being tamed or it fails. That was my biggest problem, everyone was trying to be helpful, lol repeated the first one 5 times before I figured out I had to hide from the other helpful players around me who kept trying to kill the bad spider that was eating me or heal me, lol.

When you finally finish this, and it's not nearly as bad as it sounds, mine was done in about 20 mins. It'll be time to pick your first new friend. A word of caution, choose a pet 1 level under you. Make sure there are no "helpful" people around. Do not move while you are taming or attack in any way.
Choose your pet based on what is available to you by way of food for your pet, nothing is worse then a pet you can't find food for in your zone. Birds only want fresh meat, cats however will eat meat and fish. You will need to feed your pet immediatly, until you have a green smiley face or he will have a mind all his own. Have his food in your inventory and ready for him immediatly after you tame him. FYI they will not thank you for offering them bean soup :P Keep them fed up to the green smiley face level and they will quickly gain loyalty and be the companion you hoped for.

And yes, they do level up with you, you do not have to throw away pets every time your level goes up. Keep in mind the type pets that at one time delivered the worst butt whopping to you, and it's a good bet you'll get a nice pet out of one.

FYI for some reason the cats in the beginning do not hold aggro as well as say a bird or bear, I'd say you can consider your kitty more a rouge then a tank for you, so choose based on what you want your pet to be able to do.

Good luck :) and Chester the kitty and I wish you happy hunting :)

One little note...

Training the Beast (tagging three critters) is like three mini-quests. Taming of the spider, the Nightsaber and the Strigid, each garners you 850XP for a total of 2550XP.

When you head back to Darnassus, to speak with Jocaste to finish this lil' Class quest, you gain an addition 420XP along with your necessary skills (Growl 1, Growl 2, Beast Training, Feed/Revive Pet).

And much like casting a spell, no movements when trying to charm your lil' friend.

Cmon, you don't need to start all over! just talk to him again and he will give you another rod. You need to select the thing you want to tame, then click the taming rod. Let it attack you until the meter goes all the way down, DO NOT MOVE or it will not work!

I think that since you abandoned the quest and he isnt giving you another rod you should start a new character and try again.(thats just my opinion).

Because I don't always start here first - I click on stuff.&nbsp In Dolanar there is a pet trainer next to the guy who gives you the quests.&nbsp I got pet spells at level 6 - before I was eligible for the pet quest at level 10. After I finished getting the quest to go see Jocaste - I purchased several more spells off the same pet trainer.

People BUY pets that aren't like the hunters pets - you can do that at level 1 if you have the cash.&nbsp I saw a level 3 with a pet blue moth. Crazy quest in Sentinel Hill gives you a pet chicken.

This Quest was given to me by Dazalar just outside the inn. After taming 3 spiders I returned to Dazalar and was giving a recharged wand to charm three Nightsaber Stalker's, returned to Dazalar again and received a recharded wand. After killing 3 Stragid Screecher's I returned to Dazalar who gave me this next level for traing.

P.S. Keep the wand in your main pack.

Took me forever to figure this out - and got it from a hint in here - to tame the nightsaber and bird - you can't stay close to Dolonar - you must travel west and get almost to the gates - you can tame those beasts there - just don't fight back and put the taming rod in your action bar - luck!

I think this must be a bug. Because I:

1. Abandoned mission.
* Went back to traineer who said something along the lines of one day you will learn.

2. Dropped the training wand
* Went back to trainer who said one day you will learn

Each time I go to the original trainer it seems as thogh he thinks I am in the mission. The continue button is disabled, the caption reads something like "...some day you will learn" and the caption says must have training wand. I tried reporting this to a GM but no replies...

How does one retrain the wand. I was given a training rod and failed to tame a spider. The next time I used the tamming wand nothing happened. The wand itself says 0 charges. Do I have to recharge the tamming wand?

I ran into this too. Here is what I did.

1. Abandon the quest.
2. Destroy the Taming Rod by droping it.
3. Re-accept the quest again.

He gives you a new rod with 3 charges again. But you have to get rid of the first Taming Rod.

yeah, I had the same problem, went through 3 wands before I got it right. haha. if the wand says 0 charges, drop it on the ground, abandon the quest and start again.
My problem was that I didn't understand that the animal would attack me for a time while it was training and I attacked back the first time. you have to stand still too. (I think)

It's been quite awhile since someone else posted in this forum... so I hope someone sees this and is able to answer my question... or at least guide me to an answer.

After completing the Taming Quests... I never learned the skill to tame a beast for myself. However, I have the abilities such as Feed Pet, Beast Training, and Revive Pet. All abilities pertaining to a pet I received, all but how to tame one for myself. I believe an item was supposed to be given to me from the hunter trainer behind the inn, but one was never received. If I'm seeing things and there never was an item to gain, how in the world am I suppose to tame a pet for myself without the ability?

Many Thanks,

-Kallima
