Stone of the Tides
Catelyn's Blade
Provided Item:
Catelyn's Blade

Description

So you're looking for an altar of some sort? Well, I'm no expert on troll ruins like my father, but I have heard about a sunken troll city out near that island you're looking for. Maybe you should try there.

You got my knife back for me, so I guess you can borrow it... but I want it back when you're done!

This quest was very easy with water breathing... also I am lvl 44 hunter now.

I also swam around the area (quite beautiful) and found a lot of giant clams (4)

The location is correct 24,23. If you do not have cosmos get it!... no just kidding.

This location is just Southeast of the vile reef island with all the water elementals. Look for a big rock sticking out of the water (just south of the rock). If you are a hunter with tracking it will be easy to spot all the murlocs grouped together.

And yes Gazban turns into a water elemental.

This quest confuised me abit.
Order:
Get Catelyn's Blade from "Pretty boy" Duncan.
Go to Booty Bay with Dagger.
THEN go to the Altar, at the Cords 25,24.
Kill the spawn that comes when you use the dagger, and go back to Booty Bay.

For those with out any type of map coord's (like myself ... mods won't work for some reason) the altar is WELL below water close to where you'll see the very tall slab of rock jutting from the water's surface. It is on the opposite side from the shore, between the slab and the shore, so to speak ... it has some type of glowing aura around it . I submitted a couple screenies ... the "slab" and underwater from it.

I tried 3-4 times to open the sarcophagus with no avail, then i tried to move around it.
It will not work if you are standing above it, you need to right click on the knife while standing on the ledge where the "coffin" is located in order for the mob to come out

I think we have an intermittent bug. I'm on Khaz'Goroth but I don't think it makes any difference which realm you're on. I tried this three times a couple of days ago and each time I ran into the bug described above. (I'm a lvl 39 priest.)
Because some people were encountering the bug and some weren't I wondered whether the problem was cleared after a server reboot. The whole game is rebooted every Tuesday night (Australia time) so I logged on Wednesday morning first thing and it all worked perfectly. (Woot!)

So it's just a theory but it seems to have worked once...

As mentioned above, you know you have the bug if you can see the boss stuck in the altar before you've done anything at all. You just swim down and there he is. You get the cog wheel and when it's finished you try and attack him and you just get Evade.
At that point I don't think there's anything you can do until the game is reset.
I wonder if the problem occurs when someone kills the boss in that position stuck in the altar. Unless you are a warlock or have a potion you are going to have to drag him to the surface and kill him there. Maybe the bug occurs if you kill him on the spot and he doesn't reset properly.

For the record, here's how I did it. Dive down and pull one of the guys beside the altar. Return to surface and deal with him. Before I could kill him he pulled the next one. Finished the first guy and killed the second. (They didn't seem quite as tough as elites usually are... but your mileage may vary.) Swam to nearby rock and restored mana. Dived down to the altar on the side that I'd cleared and triggered the cog wheel. A second after it finished the boss appeared and I tried to drag him to the surface. Must have gone too fast and I lost him. Repeated clicking on altar, triggered boss and this time got him to surface. He turns into an elemental but you just keep plugging away. (In my case I kept my bubble up and wanded him to death.) Loot body. Back to Booty Bay. Yay!

I see from spiroui's comment above that, if I'd stayed in the blue column, I might have been able to do the quest without having to kill any of the elites around the altar!

Hope this helps.

If you find you can't hit Gazban then you need to make sure you are within the confines of the Altars light. Otherwise you keep getting evades as if fighting a land creature from the water.

Ok, I abandoned it and got it again and it still did not work for my hunter. Was about to give up on it for good. How ever as I was about to leave I decided just for the heck of it to dismiss my pet and try one last time. It worked just fine after my pet was gone.

Hope that helps hunters and maybe warlocks as well at least.

Gazban will spawn after you destroy the altar and attack you... battle proceeds from there. The quest is hard to solo even at higher levels simply due to the advantage murlocs have in the water, as well as their relatively quick respawn rate.

Quest rocks for casters - the end robe is a treat, prolly best a non tailor can do (arguably) til you get the Maraudon robe. And its SO not elite ...do what they say...swim directly above the alter then straight down...activate...kill. He's not even an elite mob, and murlocs don't aggro if you do it that way. I didn't wanna risk drowning so i bought an enduring breath potion wicked cheap, got me some blue pearls while it wore off. Do it! =)

I soloed this as a 38 night elf druid. My advantages were having sea lion form so I could breathe underwater and the ability to heal while in combat with the 35 elite monsters.

Swim down to the glowing blue altar and approach from east side. There are only 2 murlocks there instead of 3 - 4 on the west side. From a distance, shift to druid/natural form and hit one with Entangling Roots, follow with the rest of your spells to get him down to about 2/3 health before he comes at you. Melee with your best weapon. Cast Regrowth to stay alive. Shift back to Sea Lion form to breathe (you can still attack in this form). Once breath bar is gone, shift to druid form and you'll probably have to cast Regrowth again. Smack him a few more times and he's dead.

Give it a few seconds to get your health/mana back and get the other murlock. Try to do this close to the east side of the altar. The other murlocks didn't aggro me from there. Right click Catelyn's Blade, destroy the altar and get ready for melee with Grezban (or whatever his name is). He spawns instantly. If you have enough health/mana left, he'll be pretty easy to take down as he's a 40 but not elite. Watch your breath and shift into sea lion form when needed so you don't drown.

While you are in the area, you can get several blue pearls from the giant clams which can be used for Pearl Diving, which comes from a character in the Badlands.

I was doing this quest with my rogue, first try, right after i the summon finished, i quickly stealthed, and I saw Gazban appear, and suddenly disappear, so i tried again, and nothing, so I abandoned the quest, and got it again, and tried the summoning again, and no luck. Guess its still bugged. :(

I soloed this as a 44 druid.. very easy. The elites surrounding the alter are 34-35, and so can be single pulled and dispatched pretty easily solo, as long as you can heal your self in some way.

Gazban himself is non-elite and was surprising trivial to kill.

This IS doable with one person, it's just a big pain in the ass. If you have a way to breathe water (engineering, alchemy, warlock, shaman, etc) it's much, much easier.

1> Kill or stun the two murlocs closest to the tablet side of the altar.

2> Creep up to the altar and activate it.

3> Kill Gazban.

4> Loot the Stone of the Tides.

I tried taking the "Legends of the Gurubashi, Volume 3" book that you get in Stromwind Library with me, and was able to summon Gazban. Not sure how much of that was just luck, though.

ITS NOT NEEDED
I did it without the book, all about luck.

I kept trying, by simply right-clicking the altar, on the 50th try maybe, it worked.

Quest is not bugged. I too thought that it might be, tried several times with the focusing bar up to get the mob to spawn. Then, I noticed that the blade icon (where it shows u the blue hand which will light up when u cover the quest proc) was not lit. The gear icon was lighting up, but not the hand icon. Proc the mob by moving CLOSER to the altar and the blade will proc the mob to spawn. All non-elite these days.

If you're lower I'd imagine you might have to kill a murloc or two.

The quest does work, and you DO NOT need "Legends of the Gurubashi, Volume 3". I completed the quest after a couple log-in's and log-outs.

Make sure you are using a breathing potion. Right click on the altar. Gazban will yell that he is drawn to the altar. He *may not* appear immediately. If he appears right away, make sure you attack fast or he will Evade. Do not run away or move before you attack him, or he will Evade. If he doesn't appear immediately .. just wait there approx 10 mins... try not to move around from your spot, then right click the altar again.. and he appears. After he appears attack him, and he will turn into a big water elemental. kill him then you're done.

I found this quite easy. First thing I did.. I swam down.. at first I had no aggro but I started to summon the stone, and a murloc pulled aggro, So in return I started heading to the surface. Killed him, went back down, Succesfully summoned the stone, Gazban spawned I ran him up to the surface then killed him.

Simple.

I assume this would work for anybody, especially if you don't have stealth. First, HIGHLY recommend u get 30 minute water breathing potion at the AH, 2 to be safe, unless ur a stud (i'm not), but if u follow this path u should only need one, and technically u could do it without potion if u know EXACTLY what to do, and do it EXACTLY right the first time. The elite murlocs (there are 6 inside the walls that fence the altar) are arrayed as follows: 3 frost casters on the left (west) side of the altar (looking north), and 3 archers on the right (east) side. The only way to avoid them is to come almost straight down on the altar FROM THE SOUTH. One way to ensure you approach at the correct angle is to land on the capstone of the doorway that leads from the altar to the next room. As you approach the altar, veer ONLY a degree or two to the right (east). As soon as the pointer turns gold, stop and activate it. Gazban will attack from above and to your rear, at least he did both times in my case. BACK OUT away from the altar, at the same angle of approach that you entered, then stop about half way to the surface and take care of Gazban. He didn't follow me all the way to the surface on my first attempt. If you fail to nail him you can repeat the quest right away. Good luck!

Swam down to blue obelisk just outside the walled area (just south of the island) and 'opened' it.

Gazban appeared. Viper sting (I think), plus a couple of Aimed Shots nearly finished him, but I was running out of breath and had a couple of Murlocs on me so I left my pet to finish Gazban off (and die by Murloc!).

Swam to surface and to shore to loose the Murlocs & res the pet. Then returned to Gazban's body to get the orb. Ignore the murlocs, got the orb, surfaced and swam back to shore without dying or loosing the pet this time.
