The Tower of Althalaxx

Collect a Glowing Soul Gem and return it to Delgren the Purifier at Maestra's Post.
Glowing Soul Gem

Description

Balthule's letter is dire. This Cult of the Dark Strand is a thorn in my side that must be removed. I have been dealing with some of the Dark Strand scum northeast of here at Ordil'Aran. One of their number possesses a soul gem that I believe holds the secret to the cult's power.

Bring it to me, and I will be able to decipher the secrets held within.

As of today I can confirm that the drop rate remains ridiculously low for the quest item.

I had no problem at all farming for it as a 22 hunter (I got here a bit late), but it was utterly boring. A few notes on my last 30 minutes of gaming.

First of all, the "ruins" where you'll find the Dark Strand mobs are located right around 32, 31...just head northeast from Maestra's Post and you'll run right into them. There are four mobs that drop the quest item: Dark Strand Cultists (with imp pets), Dark Strand Adepts (with VW pets), Dark Strand Excavators, and Dark Strand Enforcers. Despite what other posters may have noted, the drop rate of the quest item is the same for all of the mobs: 4 percent. As I noted earlier, it took me around 30 minutes to drop...just long enough for me to start considering going elsewhere.

While I managed to garner a tiny little bit of coin, some wool cloth, and a green or two, I'm still not entirely sure the effort put into this quest was worth the reward.

If you have other quests to do, don't really need to grind for experience, or simply don't like to grind then this quest isn't for you. If you need the experience, enjoy grinding, and have 30 minutes to a couple of hours to blow, get to it. :-)

Yeah, I'd say the Quest was pretty clear about it.&nbsp Ordil'Aran is nowhere near the Tower.&nbsp It's close to the guy who gave you this quest, who is at Maestra's post.

I was able to solo the area NE of Delgin the Purifier as a level 19 hunter, keeping my pet in Happy mode (125% damage) and being willing to run at the first sign of add. Two hunters together at 19 should have no problems unless you fall asleep at the keyboard.

This is the rarest drop I've seen in WoW so far. It took my friend and I a combined hour and a half (I'd estimate) together soloing and grouped, chain killing everything at the site.

So just be prepared. We had both gotten our gem right at the point where I was starting to get bored, so I guess it's not too bad. And I dinged 20 there.

DIRECTIONS
Starting from Delgren the Purifier at Maestra's Post walk NORTH (using your Minimap as a Guide) into a house.
You're in the right house if you notice a purple-haired Elvan Female in a green dress named Liladris Moonriver. SHE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS QUEST (but she may have a quest for you).

JUMP OFF THE BALCONY ------ WEEEEEEEEEE!

Wave to the Wild Bucks as you follow the eastern slope of the mountain.

Continue in this NORTHEAST direction (as indicated by the quest) until you've encountered a mass of Dark Strand fiends.

HURRAY! You've found the location!

COORDINATES
Generally the area is pretty vast, but the roundabout coords are 31,31

MINIONS A PLENTY
Bring a friend or solo if you're feeling brave. Just about each Dark Strand member has a friend of his/her own to blast you to smitherines with. I hope you brought the picnic basket.

All I can say is that:

1) Read the quest text.
2) Get a friend (upper level guildie) to help you.

You can wipe these out really quickly when you have a friend or a party. It's not too bad, you just might have to suck up whatever pride you might be showing and ask for help. Otherwise, forget it. As a hunter or lock this could be easy, but otherwise you'll be pulling 2 mobs plus minions.

Get potions or a healer and you'll be okay, though. ^_^ Good luck.

All those who got the drop quickly that's good for you, but most of us ARE in the correct area (the ruins of Ordil'Aran in Ashenvale north of Maestra's Post) and it just takes a long, long time killing the mobs before the gem drops.&nbsp You played the odds and got lucky, but for most of us the odds suck.

I've done this quest at least twice on different chars, and every time it takes me ages to get the damn drop. Actually doing it as I write. And not much drops to show for it either...they should really improve the droprate on this one, it sucks. =P

[two minutes later]

...and of course it dropped on the first mob i killed after writing this. Murphy, kiss my ass!
(and for you who don't know who I'm refering to, it's Murphy's Laws if something can go wrong, it does.)

Seriously, if you don't get the sould gem after killing them all once then abandon the quest, go back to maestras post, take the quest again and have another go.

L22 hunter and I killed them all first go, got nothing, abandoned the quest, retook it and got the soul gem on the third kill (a defender dropped it).

It's the best way to do it if you're stuck.

Although as a level 20 and older I wasn't fooled, I know many a young teenager that has went in to the Tower to retreive the gem only to be met with ? level characters in the Tower and have no way out after resurrection. As a priest, I have been asked four times already in Darkshore to come help some poor soul out of there thinking he went there instead of the "The Ruins of Ordil" area, and I've only been playing for 10 days.

Also, going around with another we got the gem after about five times through the repops of the creatures, and all priest or any healers should know that each demon comes after you when the warrior attacks the darkstrand characters. Even on Lesser Heals Level 3 this is the case, so aggro management is useless if you actually want to heal. I'd recommend having yourself protected whenever you know your friend is heading towards characters with demon pets. Otherwise you're fine, you just have to be paitent.

This quest is in Ashenvale
Go to Mystrea's Post (can't remember the exact spelling) turn back facing north and then head NE towards the cliff face..after about 2 mins walking you should start to see the Warlocks minions and then the actual Dark Strand folk.
Took me a bout 2 days to find this place and about 10 mins to get a gem.

The coordinates for the area are correct: 31,31
MIND YOU, however. These are the Ruins of Ordil'Aran. I snuck past countless furlbogs thinking that they were up the path Northwest of where the quest starts.

As of today, this is still bugged--cant turn in to palidan(bloodhoof). Talked with a GM and they are working on it. Took me about 20 kills to get it(not including minions). Directions are mentioned in the text. "Northeast of here". Usually means in zone. If they want to you go to another they usually state that :)

I agree with the earlier post about this being poorly named. As a 21 NE Hunter, I farmed Dark Strand Cultists for 2 hours at the Tower of Althalaxx with no Soulgem drop only to read later I was in the wrong spot (at least it was good XP).

This is in *Ashenvale* at Cosmos coords (31,32). After clearing out the lvl 19-21 mobs twice the gem finally dropped. Took about 30 minutes. Turn in the gem at Maestra's Post (not in Auberdine). This is south of where you were fighting.

This experience just reinforced the need to check here *before* starting quests to avoid wasting time.

I was able to do this with a 22 mage. I would sheep the caster, take out the minion, then rest up/apply first aid. The key with the casters is to use spells with low casting time such as frostbolt that also slow the caster. Three frostbolts and some arcane missles worked well. Died twice figuring that out... :)

So, after going for about an hour + and killing everything in the area about 30 times, I need somewhere to vent.

You don't really aggro other mobs if you stay to the outside and kill in a line. They're a decent length away from eachother to really aggo. Finished this off mainly solo with a 25 Rogue (had a 20 Lock with me about 3/4 of the way through, but she didn't really do much.) Not really a hard quest, just time-consuming (sometimes.)

I totally agree that this quest isn't worth the wasted time. A friend and I killed our way through the ruins 9 times. We are both hunters. I went through over 300 arrows. On the first run through, I leveled to 20. On the second time through, my cat leveled to 20. Alone, I went through it 3 times. Still no Soul Gem. In my opinion, just abandon this useless time waster. You're much better off spending that time, effort, and money actually completing quests where you have something to show for it.
