The Howling Vale

Go to the Howling Vale and study the Tome of Mel'Thandris, then return to Sentinel Melyria Frostshadow at Forest Song.
  •
View the Tome of Mel'Thandris

Description

Though we have put many resources and much effort into driving the remaining demons from the Felwood to the north, our successes have been few. We have been able to keep much of the demonic presence from Ashenvale.

To the north, near the Felwood border, the ruined shrine of Mel'Thandris has been overtaken by mysterious wolf-men. Their chilling calls have led the area to be known as the Howling Vale. The Tome of Mel'Thandris kept at the shrine may shed some light on why these wolf-men have come.

To reach the vale you travel north toward Felwood and look west until you see a sloping path. The path has a few worgen and leads up to a cave at 53, 38. Go through the cave and you'll find the shrine on the other side. The book is on a table just in front of the shrine.

The location "53,58" means nothing to people without cosmos.&nbsp So if your'e like me and don't have it, heres what to do for this quest:
Follow the road north towards Felwood, and on the WEST side of the road there is a path that leads up to a cave entrance.&nbsp On the map, it uses the cave symbol.&nbsp Thats what made me go crazy about this quest, I assumed the shrine couldn't possibly be in a cave. Well it is.&nbsp Go through the cave passage and youll find a green ziggurat like thing at the other side.&nbsp Kill about 20 of the wolf dudes and then read the tome.&nbsp

Lemme just say this: Part of fantasy gaming IS getting lost. Sure you can get directions. Sure you&nbsp can find a walk through. But damn, at least TRY and find a site w/out coords. Now I may be dating myself (I AM and I dont care) but in the (ahem) old days... say, the apple II Proving Grounds of The Mad Overlord days. We had to map the grids by hand. Step by step, taking into account random teleports and spinners and magical darkness and all sort of B.S. But we did it. Why? Well.... because we were obviously uber dorks... with time... massive amounts of time... I digress (hehe) Now I'm not saying I hate ya or that I think anything less of a player for getting a nudge (that's a lie). I, after all, have logged on to this site more than once, but still all of this belly aching and whining about quest being too hard or not worth it and such really gets under my skin. I love WoW, I enjoy the community feel, but for CRYING OUT LOUD, step up and explore. When you get lost you end up finding places that you would have had to ask directions to later... except you've already accidently&nbsp found them!
Just because you reach 60 doesn't mean you've taken advantaged of a great game. In fact, if one CONSTANTLY, uses coords to find sites you're TOTALLY taking advantage of a neato speedo community, but missing one of RPG's main points. That being character interaction. I mean seriously how hard is it to find (in game) directions from somebody who might already know where you need to go? I'll answer that. Sometimes pretty hard, ok? But, in the spirit of the game, I have accompanied, more than once, a poor unfortunate, lost soul and escorted (just fer kicks) them to their destination... and vice versa.
Seriously If you want permanent crutches, jump off of the Tree of Life (there's a few DAMN FINE places for doing just that BTW) I would provide coords but... you know.
If you want specific directions to a site then stop off at the nearest gas station, inn, or where ever other PC's might be gathered and... ask.

p.s.

You get the quest from a nightelf in the Shrine of Aessina. My 28 Druid stealthed through the cave and right up to the ziggurat. Found the Tome and snuck up on it from the shrine. Shifted into Druid and triggered the gearwheel. A 29 and 30 attacked me instantly.

Interesting. Their attacks stopped the quest item timer, so I couldn't kamekazi it. Had to fight. Problem #2 couldn't heal fast enough with both of them attacking me at the same time. My heal would only replace what they then removed and the cycle would repeat until I ran out of mana.

Faeried the 29 and shifted to bear at about half health, managed to kill him with about 175 left, turned to the 30 and hit him with Bash/stun, shifted into Druid, healed, faeried, moonfired, shifted back to bear and then it was only a matter of time. Because I had pulled them away from the book (towards the ziggurat), nobody else joined the party.

I approached the book very carefully (from the ziggurat side) in Druid form but no one else attacked. Finished the quest, shifted to Cat/prowl and stealthed out, back through the tunnel.

This would be long and tough for an under-30 without stealth. You'd have to kill at least a dozen of the beastoids to get to the Tome. Just something to keep in mind when you're allocating your time.

Just done this mission with my lock at level 30. So here's some clarification...

Firstly 55,32 is the path up to the cave, go here and head up the path to the cave.
Secondly once through the cave you do not have to fight all the way down the path and around to the book, just head to the left as you come out of the cave drop down off the side to end up behind the book.
Thirdly, the pack leader is a Silver Elite who I have seen once and this was that time, I was a little confused with the comments about him until I did it again. I pulled him by himself and killed him. Got a nice Necklace for it too!

As someone already said take it easy in there and you'll be fine. When I was done I Hearthstoned out... lazy maybe... late for work yes :)

Don't know if this quest has changed, but on my way to the tome I was able to pull the lvl 28 mobs one by one, and then when I reached the tome I just pulled the lvl 28 mob closest to it so I could read the thing without aggro'ing anyone.

I just completed this as a 31 priest, and if a squishy like me can do it solo, anyone can if they are an appropriate level for this quest.

Find the path just where noted by other players, kill a few of the "wolfmen" on the way up and three just outside the cave, then run thru the cave which is very short, more like a tunnel.&nbsp On the other end kill 2 or maybe 3 more wolfmen right at the exit.&nbsp (Pick wild steelbloom if you're an herbalist.)

On the left of the cave exit is a large rock which abuts the foundation of a building.&nbsp Climb onto the rock and locate the tome on the small table just below.&nbsp Judge if you need to kill the closest mob or not, and if so pull him to you and do your thing.&nbsp I did not see any elites here as some have noted.

Then jump from the rock to the building foundation.&nbsp One click at a time move forward until the tome is right-clickable, read it, and go back exactly the way you came.

By the time you get to the other side of the tunnel the mobs will probably have respawned, so be prepared to take them out.&nbsp I did not run back down the path but instead at the other end I went over the hills back down to the road, and I didn't have to kill a thing along the way.

Good luck and have fun!

The priest is right I took out the guys on the way 1 by 1 and then turned left at the rock to walk down to the "mossy structure" was and killed the closest guy and read the tome. Left the way I cam and killed the wolves on the path by the cave 1 by 1.

As a rogue, of course, stealth helped a lot.

Completed it as a 27 Hunter w/ 26 Ghost Saber. I ran into one problem when I pulled three at once but I droped back behind the shrine and the Worgen got confused and couldn't follow me, they just run back and forth ona tree limb. Not sure if this works every time though cause I never got a chance to actually test it or see if I just got Lucky. Just pull one at a time and you got it. Hope this helps.

Coords are
50,39 for teh book
52,37 For the Cave mouth
And 55,32 For teh Trailhead.
For people w/o Coords it's a trail with Werewolf thingies on it just left of teh road to Felwood Near all the Treants.

Communication is a lost art.

This extends to the use of the english language, and is especially true of online games "communications"

Giving directions seems to be a lost art as well. Case in point: Q: Where is the temple of athena. A: Right here Q: Where are you A: At the temple of Athena Q: Ok but how do I get to you A: Look! It is simple just come to where I am and you will be at the Temple of Athena. Q (in frustration) I dont know where you or the temple is. Could you be more specific?

The coords and whatnot are correct, and it's not too hard to find if you know where to look. Pay attention to your map... Go through Ashenvale to the road that goes north past Raynewood Retreat towards the Felwood region. Almost to Felwood there will be the place on the left (west) side of the road where there are a few Treants hanging around in static spots among some ruined white columns and such (part of the quest for the rod that turns you into a Furbolg is found there). Just past that on the same side of the road is a path just off the road that leads up to the entrance to the cave that leads to Howling Vale. You should even be able to see one or more Terrowulfs that partol the path up to the cave from the road.

If nothing else, barring the quests, it's a good place for someone to get not only silver but leather, hides, Large Fangs and the occasional green... not to mention XP if you're within a good range of their levels, which most of them are in the 28-30 range.

Ashenvale's border with Felwood is almost all of it's northern mountains. Unless you expect a person to search all the of the mountains from the entrance to Darkshore to east of Satyrnaar, then I don't think it should be considered easy to find at all.

That being said, what the quest text means is that it's near the entrance to Felwood. Where the road straights out just before you get to Felwood, you head west off of the road, and look for a path going up into the mountain a bit. It leads to Terrowulves and a cave, which is the Howling Vale.

I didn't read far enough to find out how to find the HOwling Vale, and after an hour searching for it I dumped the quest. Now I don't much care.

It does show that one should read the whole thread before giving up. Eventually they'll tell how to find that vale. It's not obvious and the directions don't really help.

What am I missing here? I don't see an entrance to this big column...am I supposed to get IN it to explore it?
