Test of Endurance

Bring Grenka's Claw to Dorn Plainstalker in Thousand Needles.
Grenka's Claw

Description

I'm pleased to see your courage remains steadfast in light of what you've already done. Since your faith is intact, the time has come to test your body.

First is a test of endurance. Go to the Roguefeather Den west of Freewind Post. Make your way to the depths of their lair and destroy their foodstuffs. By then you should have provoked their fury, and if you are able to survive long enough, Grenka Bloodscreech herself will come for you--kill her and bring me her claw to complete your test.

This quest is no longer classified as a group quest or as needing 2 players..with the recent patch they made it a solo-able quest now.
Grenka is lvl 30 now and easy kill.

The cave can be found at 27,51. It is directly south of the great lift, along the cliff wall. You will find a walkway up the cliff face to the cave entrance.
We went in with Mage, Shaman, Druid and Warrior...made light work of this cave and all that died inside... Warrior was a bit off though as he broke the boxes again after we killed all of the waves... We killed the second wave and he left the group. Grenka was in the 3rd wave of mob's.
Good Luck...its easy if you have a good group...bit harder solo...but is do-able...

Warning for Mages, Warlocks and Priests, this quest is HARD dont try it without someone to help you. I've done it as a lvl 39 mage, nearly got killed as the harpies CONSTANTLY silence you. Its one of these Quests where you see that Blizzard doesnt want casters to do it...

How this quest works is this.&nbsp When you destory the foodstuffs, 3 waves of 3 monsters will come.&nbsp Because of that, it makes this hard to solo (if not outright impossible for the level this is obtained).&nbsp The target monster is in the final wave, of course.

Ok this is how it went for me:

Cleared the cave to get the boxes and start opening them. Before i got time to open the 3rd boxe the first wave (2 mobs) showed up. I killed them then another group of 2 came. I manage to kill them too but my health was low when the 3rd wave arrived and i died.&nbsp I rezed in the spirit healer and went to freewind to repair and search for help. Since no one showed up i decided to try it alone one more time. Clear the way to the boxes and when i got there the mobs from the wave that killed me were there close to the boxes with some other harpies that poped. Couldn't get them one by one and&nbsp i had to fight 4 at a time. killed them but got myself to 10% hp. Then the boss showed up with 2 more mobs but (and this is the important part) i manage to run to a safe spot (back and right if ur facing the boxes, lower ground) before aggroing them. There i just waited until i got full health, triggered the hability that gives you rage for a small cost of health (can remember the name sry), waited for max rage and out of combat status and just charged the boss with my 2H 23dps mace. Then i start retaliation plus the shout that decreases enemies atack power and spammed cleaves. 15 secs later all the 3 were dead and my health was over 60%.

And i dont think you should blame blizzard for the quest's dificulty since it is clearly stated: "Go with friends to the Roguefeather Den...". Your are not supposed to do this alone (at least without dying) but hey, you can always try =)

Hope that this helps.

Don't break all three food crates..

break all 3, you get 3 waves,

Break one and wait.&nbsp you get 1 wave,
Then the Second, second wave,
Then third, Third wave.

First of all, the spawns are generated when anyone opens a box -- in TOTAL there are 4 waves of harpies, which go like this IIRC:

1. 2 harpies
2. 2 harpies
3. 3 harpies
4. 2 harpies + boss

Now it may be that when you walk in, some of the spawns are still there from somebody else's attempt. So it is possible that as you kill harpies in that room, more will spawn because you are in the middle of the waves. This actually works to your advantage since you have less of an endurance match to deal with, but be wary of this since the spawns might come from behind and catch you off guard. If you notice spawns coming, DO NOT touch the food crates, as this will cause a SECOND wave to begin, and yes they are concurrent! You can have 2 or more simultaneous waves up at the same time. Very bad idea. Similarly if you die, and then rez, do not reopen the food crate, just continue killing the ones that are there.

The harpies will automatically move to the area near the food crates, so if you want to take a break between waves, you should move to the opposite side of the room when engaging the first wave (but watch for the pathing of the waves). The second wave will hopefully pass you by as it comes in, then you can rest up.

You can also run yourself through this if you have a high level character. Get both of your guys in position, then let the level 30 open the food crates. As soon as you do this, logout -- it takes 20 seconds and you'll probably take a few hits before you are actually out. Now switch to your high level and destroy the first 3 waves. The waves will not automatically aggro since you are too high level for their radius. So after the 3rd wave, just relax and logout. Switch back to your level 30. The 3 harpies will aggro immediately as you login, so be prepared. Assuming you are appropriately leveled, you shouldn't have too much trouble defeating the 2 harpies and then the boss.&nbsp Remember that they can silence so use your burst damage and healing spells preemptively, don't wait for the optimal moment or you may not get to use them at all.

Assuming you do all this without delay, you should be able to get through the waves before the regular mobs start to respawn. For me, they started respawning as I was looting the corpses of the dead, so no big deal. Just be sure to bandage up real quick in case one pops on top of you.

I totally agree with gibsontaylor. If you are a cloth wearer, get help from a melee class. I solo'ed this as a lvl 33 shaman and boy i can tell you, it wasn't a breeze for me either. They came in 4 waves i think. I only had very brief periods in between to drink water. They silenced me like 70% of the time, so it was lucky that most of my spells are instant casts (except probably Heals and LB, but you ain't supposed to be casting LB while meleeing anyway.). I have the advantage of being an enhancement shaman. Flurry and improved Windfury helps loads (and parry to for that matter). You also need to know when to cast Stoneclaw Totem.. It serves as a PERFECT distraction while I concentrate on kiilling one. I know this totem doesn't last long, but every second in this quest is crucial!

I wish there was a way to search by surrounding mob name. I had a hell of a time figuring out what this quest was... i stumbled on the cave while exploring. Grenka had about 6 other lv 30 harpies floating with her. couldn't separate that big group. btw, there were a ton of single skeletons all around :P

a swiftness potion did help me run back out to the entrance so i can retrieve my corpse in relative safety compared to the cave. by the time i single pulled each of the harpies, hit the big group then ran for it, the rest of the cave had repopped.

Start heading to the cords stated above. Make your way through the cave and head to the bottom of it. Its a straight path. At the bottom of the cave you will find 3 boxes, open them and eventually Grenka will spawn. She will come alone and its a regular mob, just like the others in the cave. Kill it and loot her claw.

Druids with the Feral Instinct talent can stealth all the way to the boxes without alerting the harpies on the way. They often screeched at me when I had to pass too close (it's a narrow passage), but I kept moving and they didn't attack. I did kill the 3 nearest to the boxes before breaking one, to avoid social aggro from Grenclaw. I'm not sure if that was necessary or not.

The only issue in the cave is that the harpies run in fear at low health, and it's easy to get a daisy chain of aggro if you don't dispatch them quickly. Feral druids, I suggest hitting Moonfire as soon as they start running (have it on a keybind or another bar so you can pop it without having to break form first). Hit it again right after GCD is up, and they should drop before finding a friend.

I dunno, maybe it's the rogue skills, but I easily soloed this quest as a level 30 Rogue. Sure, I used a lot of heavy silk bandages between waves, but between cheapshot and kidney punch with two twink blades (Legionnaire's Sword and Zealot Blade) this wasn't difficult.

The Harpies in this cave drop Vibrant Plumes which are used to gain Darkmoon Faire Tickets (and rep). Find a high level player that is going for the Darkmoon Orb or Amulet. He will appreciate your ability to bring massive swarms of Harpies by breaking the crates, thus increasing the drops of Vibrant Plumes. You will be able to loot Grenka's Claw during one of the many spawnings.

You can get the Claw for the quest as well as several green drops and Wool and Silk Cloth and the high level can get numerous Vibrant Plumes.

High level players, if you are looking to obtain Darkmoon Faire Tickets, this area has the highest drop rate for Vibrant Plumes which will get you about half way to Friendly with the Darkmoon Faire and gives the most tickets per stack of turn-ins. You get 12 Tickets per 5 Vibrant Plumes--they stack to 10, thus 24 Tickets per stack. You can do this until you reach a certain rep with the Faire. You only get 10 Tickets per stack of 10 turn-ins for Glowing Scorpid Blood, and Evil Bat Eyes and it's easier to grind the Vibrant Plumes than the Blood, Eyes, or mats for Rugget Armor Kits, or Thorium Widgets (which you'll have to use to finish.

Find a player that has this quest and get them to smash the crates. Just keep the massive swarms of Harpies. Just help keep the Harpies off of the lower level player.

This quest can get you killed if you don't know what to expect. Break one box, get jumped by two harpies. When they're done, another wave comes, and then a rather large wave with Grenka. If you don't have a way of recuperating between waves (Like Stealth) I'd recommend coming in with a group.

Only issue I have with this quest is it likes to break a new and inventive way every time I try to do it. Back in the old days of my druid, opening one box made all the waves spawn on top of each other. Most recently, on my 4th, there were waves left over from someone else's attempt (judging by the bones) that, when I cleared away, immedeately spawned the rest of the waves. I never got NEAR a crate.

Otherwise it's straight forward: insanely fast respawn times, harpies as thick as you can get, with a few random patrols thrown in.

Just finished this as 35 warrior. Was a pain until i figured out the strategy.

Kill all of the harpies surrounding the boxes.
Break 1 or 2 boxes.

There will be 3 or 4 waves of 4 or 5 harpies (level 28-30 non elite) each after that. The key to surviving is focusing on killing one harpy at a time. Warriors, Cleave is king here. Skills that reduce attack power and attack speed are also extremly useful. Using any skill that slows is useful too as the harpies will try to run away when down to about 10%. Cloth wearers will deffinitely need help with this one (except maybe warlocks using voidwalker as a tank). I recommend druids use bear form for this one. Other classes should be able to solo this one around 30+ if you use the strategy below. This one is easily 2-man doable.

Back up as far against the wall where the boxes are as possible. Since the harpies stop at the edge of the circle area that holds the foodcrates, at level 30 this should put you just outside their threat zone. the key is to attack one and pull them back to you. This also helps prevent other wandering harpies from joining the fight.

Once the first wave is dead there will be about 5 or so seconds before the next wave runs over. If you have backed up as far against the wall as possible you will again be outside of their threat range. At which point you can heal up/regen mana before killing them.

Repeat this technique for all of the following waves including Grenka's group.

I did die once doing this one before I figured out this strategy. After that is was only mildly difficult.

Yeh this was a bit of a mission as a lvl 34 Warlock with VW solo, died once.

Getting in was easy enough some were in groups of 2 and made it hard by silencing, just quickly switched to wand till it wore off.

Now for the fun part, i cleared the path leading down to Grenka & boxes, so if i got jumped i could run up the path and they would fly back,i cleared the 2 single ones infront of Grenka(if timed right the one just in front & behind of Grenka you can pull one from her group each time with out them all comming over.

By now they have started respawing up the path so i cleaned them up, when i was finished doing that thoes 2 right in front of her respawned so i just repeated the process by pulling 1 more from her group.

Leaving just 2 left, attacked Grenka feared the other, by the time the other had returned she was just about dead, grabbed claw smash all boxes.

Then got nailed from behind by 2, jumped down that depression in the cave as to not aggro the others when they respawn(Which the seem to do pretty fast), but got hit with a few waves of 2 at a time.

After the 3rd wave had no manna or health left (had no potins at the time \) Vw was just about dead (all in cave had respawned by now), so sacrficed him and and bolted for the exit.

haha almost died again trying to exit cave corpse died right near the 2 at the entranced when i used soul stone.

Level: 30 as a lock i don't think you could do it solo, 2 lvl 30's you would have a good chance.

Grenka was already spawned when I entered the final cave, with five harpies relatively near her. I pulled in two groups (solo 33 warrior) and didn't have much trouble, and looted the claw.

However, I decided to break the crates afterward, and was overrun by three waves of harpies. I have been told that Grenka typically spawns after the third crate is broken, so my recommendation is to break the crates one at a time, deal with the spawns, then rest/heal before breaking the next.

Rezzing in the cave is difficult, but not impossible. If you rez in the corner furthest from the crates, it is likely you will only have to face one or two harpies that are within aggro range (of levels similar to the mobs).

Oh this place pissed me off into a state of mind I've yet to believe possible.

Lv30 Warlock, Tried to solo (No where dose it say this is a group quest...however, if you're in to reading the quest logs...it dose say friends =/)

Noting they have a move to blast me into a gust of wind so I'm out of combat, also, the ones that silence you for 8 seconds, and will do it as often as possible A 15 second CD on the move is what it seemed to be.

Anyways, I made it to the back of the cave, and touched the boxes un-aware that it starts an event.

I made it to the 3rd wave, but by this time, my pet was struggling to stay alive, so my DPS was being turned into health funnel, and DoTs in between. If I had more room to move out of the silence, I might of made it, but I also had Re-spawns on me by the 3rd wave.

So in short, Go with a group, or if you plan to solo...be fast, and ready for waves of these guys.

Casters are going to have a hard time here due to the 8 second silence...it's not fun learning these things the hard way.

This quest as a solo warlock (33) was too difficult doing solo. As soon as you open even one crate the waves of Harpies start flowing, by the time I got to the 3rd wave my pet was toast and they were all aggro'ing me. I tried to fear them all in turn but that annoying silence spell really pisses me off. I wouldn't say it is impossible to do as a solo warlock but you would have to fight flawlessly to win this one, better off going as a group, especially a healer, maybe a pally for some buffs.

Destroying only one of the foodstuffs spawns 4 waves of Roguefeathers and Harpies. Grenka comes along with the 4th wave.

Be careful as the mobs can cast a 8 second silence and a 4 second stun.
