I dinged 30 this evening, and made the mistake to think I'd have the Felhunter in a flash. (It's almost 5 in the morning.) This is absolutely one of the most annoying quests I've ever done. Luckily I had the flight paths that were needed.

The quest itself. (Alliance)

First you get the quest at your warlock trainer. (Doh.)

- He'll tell you to go talk to Strahad Farsan in Ratchet. (The Barrens.)

- After doing that this guy tells you to go talk to Krom Stoutarm in Ironforge.

- Krom'll ask you for 2 items, a Moldy Tome, found in Hillsbrad Foothills,
< http://classicdb.ch/?object=92013 >
And a Tattered Manuscript, found in Thousand Needles.

( I put my Hearthstone in IF during this part, it saved me some walking. )

- After you've received these two items you return to him. (Yes, Krom.)

Out of these two items he'll craft the tome, and tells you to go fetch 3 Rod of Channeling,
< http://classicdb.ch/?item=6930 >
Dropped by Dragonmaw Bonewarders and Dragonmaw Shadowwarders in Wetlands.

You have to bring these items back to Strahad Farsan in Ratchet, where you'll summon a Felhunter, and kill it. After you've done ll that you get to summon your very own. Hooray.

I got mine right when I hit 30, soloed the whole thing.

Here's how to do it:

1) get the quest from the warlock trainer (stormwind for alliance, orgrimmar for horde)

2) go to ratchet. The first time I went, I went to Menethil and took the boat to Theramore, and then swam north right on the edge of the ocean. It takes a while, but unending breath makes it much easier, just&nbsp put your char on auto run and steer him once in a while. Just be sure to stay well clear of the higher lvl mobs.

Once you get close to ratchet you can go to shore, there are some pirates to the south and some other lower level mobs you can avoid or easily kill. Watch for horde here if you are pvp... there are usually a few stragglers here, 2 or three horde that range from their teens up to 30's and a couple 60's once in a while.

3) find the quest guy, he's across the main street up a the hill near the little tower. if you are standing ont he dock, the tower is to the right side of the main road in ratchet.

4) Once you get the next quest, wait for the boat on the dock. if there are horde, either hide and wait for them to leave, or run to the boat and hope you make it on before they kill you. once on the boat, you'll get rezed when it goes to booty bay, so either jump off or let them kill you again and just rez at the graveyard and walk to town.

Get the flight path in booty bay and fly to IF.

5) Talk to the guy in the hall of explorers for the next part of the quest (sorry horde, don't know your half of this one)

6) The first half of the tome is up in Hillsbrad, west of southshore a ways on the beach. location is 27,72. I didn't have the flight path to southshore yet, so I flew to menethil and then hopped in the ocean for another swim north. stayed at the very edge of the ocean and just put it on autorun. There's some murlocks to dodge towards the end, but mostly a really easy swim.

The murlocs are easy to kill, just find the camp with the book (there was a chest next to it, but you can just run your mouse over the shore until you spot it). they are easy to kill one at a time. Once you are done, head over to southshore and get the flight path there.

7) Next you need to head back to the barrens for the other half. this is a bit of a trek, and you have a few choices. a) hearth back to ratchet and walk, b) fly all the way down to booty bay from southshore and take the boat to ratchet, saving your hearth for later, c) fly to menethil, and take the boat to theramore and walk to the barrens (a little dangerous, high lvl mobs in the swamp outside theramore, but it's not too bad, d) fly to booty bay and take the boat back to ratchet.

8) once you are back in the barrens, walk south towards thousand needles. when you get to the border you'll see the elevators ("the lift" or something) with 2 horde guards. at this point i was attacked by a lvl 30 warrior (snuck up on me, dammit) but luckily i had my succy out and she charmed him while i dotted him and feared/bolted him till he died. bet he felt stupid. anyway, the guards should be an easy kill, so don't be afraid to take them out. ride the elevator down and hang a left and hug the wall on your left as you travel south east.

9) I ran into more horde here, 2 lvl 30's who killed me when i completely lagged out. very lame of them. make sure you have your SS on. I found the cave at 43,32. ran into the same 2 horde that killed me before, killed both of them when they were separated (lock and a hunter - revenge is sweet), but then they came back and killed me again :(. I logged out and back in at this point because they were camping my corpse, so after about 5-10 mins i logged back in and rezzed outside of the cave and went back in. no sign of them after that, and found the chest with the other half of the book&nbsp just to the left of the entrance in the middle of the cave.

10) once i had the other half, it's back to IF you go. I had my hearth set for SW, so I ported back and flew to IF to return to the library.

11) once you have the tome from him and the next part, fly up to menethil and head east on the road. When you see the graveyard on the right, bust out the VW and walk up the hill. You'll see the guys with the skeleton pets - those are the ones you want. Kill a few till you get the 3 rods - they drop pretty frequently, and the guys respawn pretty fast, so if you kill them all just wait a minute for a respawn instead of hiking into the camp with the other guys.

12) Once you have the rods, either hearth to ratchet (if you set your inn there) or fly down to booty bay and take the boat back. get your VW out and turn in the quest.

13) wait for the 2nd summoning circle to appear - the first for me was green, second was pink. once it appears, use the tome and it will summon the felhunter. kill it quick (should be really easy) and it' yours! enjoy!

Your ultimate goal is the horde city of Ratchet in the horde territory of the barrens. The easiest way to get there is the boat from booty bay.
So from Ironforge go to Stormwind. Then if you don't have flight path to booty bay walk out of stormwind going south. You have a long walk but it will be worth it. You will pass through elwyn forest and swim a river into duskwood. Find the main road in duskwood and take it to an intersection where you can go to StrangleThorn Vale. Then walk the entire length of the map. Booty Bay is a contested town at the very tip of the map. Once in Booty Bay you are relatively safe. Get the flight path and go to the boat. Watch for ganking horde. Ride boat to Ratchet. When you get off boat go up peir and to your right. Keep bearing right and you should get a yellow dot on your mini-map. Talk to the guy and turn around and go back the way you came. But now you can fly.
Best adventures.

This quest isn't as hard as people say it is. DON'T STRESS IT. I kept holding my breath, waiting for the hard part when I first soloed it. IT NEVER CAME!

A few (7) tips (+ 1 comment on talents):

Southshore loc: 27, 72
Easiest way to Southshore: In Wetlands, take the road North toward Dun Modr & cross the bridge to Arathi Highlands (51, 10) follow the road in Arathi North, around a curve turning West (43, 55), & continue toward Thoradin's Wall (19, 29) heading West & Enter Hillsbrad (instead of turning West, you can continue North to Refuge Point (45, 47), learn the flight path, & return to where you head West) in Arathi, continue West, across a river (62, 41) then turn South @ 51, 39 & continue straight into Southshore from Southshore I suppose it's a matter of preference (I just headed west, not along the coast, but at the top of the cliff, taking a few hits from bears & spiders, toward Azurelode Mine (27, 58) then used common sense to find the easiest route to 27, 72 Pull smart, use the succubus to seduce adds, murlocs are humanoids!

1k Needles loc: 43, 32 (debated)
Easiest way to 1k Needles: In Wetlands > Menethil Harbor, take the boat to Theramore Isle, not Rut'theran Village In Theramore, head NW from the docks, straight out of Theramore, follow the road out (there's only one) & stay on it (reading the signs if you have to) until it leads you to the Barrens (I never got aggro once, just don't piddle around) in the Barrens, continue West, then turn South @ 46, 75 & continue south (past Razorfen Downs & Razorfen Kraul, both nice free xp if you go far enough to discover them) until you reach 1k Needles (around 44, 90) immediately after entering 1k Needles you can see the Great Lift & the Tauren Guards, use whichever tactic you prefer to get past them & down the lift/cliff at the bottom of the lift head SouthEast toward the Centaur camp, work your way to the norht wall, hop up on the ledge & follow it to the first cave (if you're up on the ledge, you can't miss it that way!) Centaurs are humanoids, succubus will seduce your adds for you!

The [Rod(s) of Channeling] are dropped by Dragonmaw Bonewarders. Once again, in Wetlands, enter Angerfang Encampment from the South (around 54, 54 - not 42, 43) where the Bonewarders are close to the entrance (unless you WANT to fight your way through the whole Encampment). Dragonmaw Bonewarders (humanoids) have Skeletal Minions (undead). Once again, with succy, this was easy... I just attacked the Minions, Bonewarders followed & were immediately seduced (all their actions being prevented).

Of course, if you didn't go demonology your succy might be a little sucky... with my talents, the duration of my succubus' Seduction is increased by 30%. =)

Use Curse of Recklessness on the humanoid mobs to keep them from running when low on health, Curse of Agony or Weakness on the Skeletal Minions, & a wand helps save mana. I didn't nuke a thing. Other than my Curses, I just cast the occasional Immolate or Corruption.

Read the posts on Alla's & Anonymous & become familiar with the quest, & anything that stands out to YOU or that YOU feel is important.

If you are unfamiliar with any of the zones you need to go through, or haven't fully explored them, LOOK THEM UP & GET FAMILIAR! If you don't, you're lazy or you want to do it the old school way & should expect the unexpected, the possibility of multiple deaths, & not complain.

Get CTMod (www.ctmod.net) so you have coordinates. It's XML (not an .exe file so NO, IT'S NOT A HACK! DUH!), doesn't slow anything down, is quickly updated & available for download after every patch, makes WoW life that much more blissful, suggested for raids, & lets you resize & move your action bars (SWEET)! & with CTMod, you can mark the locs for the tome & manuscript on your maps so you remember exactly where they are later on when level 30, less experienced 'lock players, ask you for help.

EDIT:
Horde Tip:&nbsp Click the 'back' button on your browser & start posting info on the Horde versions of this quest (for other Horde NPC loc's, etc.).&nbsp This is the Alliance link!&nbsp =P

I'm 30, I've talked to my SW dude, now I'm reading about going to Ratchet, and I'm wondering how I won't get my butt kicked the moment I step off the boat? I mean, I'm all about getting my butt kicked, but that's a far way out of my comfort zone to be messing with getting camped...

Took the boat to booty bay to get the FP there and then flew to Ironforge....Cake walk

The part in Thousand Needles is all commented well, but one thing wasnt. The location of the chest. When u enter the cave (as you fight your way through the quickly respawning Cens) you will come to a fork. Go RIGHT, follow up and then down a path. When u come to the creek, cross it, then make the left turn at the next fork. This will put u on a dead end path that over looks the cavern below. On the ground to ur right, is the box and at that point.... well you figure it out. :)

for the moldy part of the book after you get the quest is in hinderland... if you go to southshore, go to the warer, and start swiming west till you are neer that big island.&nbsp once close there just go on land and if there is a flat area with a mine straight ahead, start walkin tword south shore along the beach and kill sum murlocks... after maybe 3 hut things down the line theres a book for ya.... now get to either Booty bay and go back the way u came . or go to menthil and go to marshwallow and get to thousand needels... once you get there take the lift down and heres the simplest f-in way to get to the damned cave... as soon as you get of the lift. get on the ledge kinda thing ON THE SIDE THE LIFT IS ON and just keep walkin along it till you pass some centuars and then run in to a big rock AKA THE CAVE, then folow the dude above's instructions.. take a right then cross the streem and youll see a chest straight ahead.

I am a level 32 Human Warlock, and want the Felhunter.&nbsp I go to Gakin (know him well already) and he does not have a ! above his head (of any colour) and when I talk to him he offers no quest - just says "Yes, Warlock?".&nbsp I have been to Ratchet many times, and tried going direct to Strahad, but nothing there either - he is obviously waiting for Gakin to give me the quest, but Gakin will not!

I have not dumped any quest given to me from Gakin, and have never had the Seek Strahad quest... Seems to be a bug of some sort?
