Tome of the Cabal

Retrieve the Moldy Tome and Tattered Manuscript for Krom Stoutarm in Ironforge.
Moldy Tome
Tattered Manuscript

Description

It was lost, but there's some idea as to where it might be found.

There was only one copy ever made and it was vandalized at some point, a large portion of it ripped from the binding. Rumor has it that it somehow passed into the hands of the centaur of Thousand Needles.

The rest was lost off the coast west of Southshore, where it was to be transported to Menethil Harbor by boat. It never arrived.

In exchange for this knowledge, all I ask is that if you find it, bring it to me to see.

I had problems at first to find the Manuscipt but some of the comments helped me.
This is going to be some help for you who dont have cordinates!

Manuscipt:
Continent: Kalimdor&nbsp Zone: Thousand needles
On the map it is a Cave were you will find the Manuscript. The caves name is Splithoof Hold. The monsters look like human/horses! and its pretty many there so i suggest u take a friend with you if u are under 30! In the cave its a brown chest, in there is the manuscript.

Moldy tome:
Continent: Eastern Kingdom&nbsp Zone: Hillsbrad Foothills. Go from Southshore down to the beach, turn right&nbsp go along the camps of creepy murlocs until you come to a camp where the Tome is.. Kill the Murlocs and take the Tome. :) easy!&nbsp

I found the Tome on CORD: 27/72!
And the Cave where the manuscript is in on: 44/36!

The Tattered Manuscript is at 43.4,32.6 in Thousand Needles. Enter the cave and turn right, follow the loop and you'll find it.

The Moldy Tome is at 27.6, 72.8 in Hillsbrad Foothills. Near the water at a Murloc camp.

finnished it. the cave menataurs are numorious, but doable. level 25 to 29, and solo pullable.

or, the death run. work your way to the cave entrance, use your eye to find the chest, then sacrifice your voidwalker, and make a death run to a safe spot close to where the tomb is.

pop up, make a pet, kill the two by the tomb, loot it, and use your gate disk thingy to leave. you gotta go back to ironforge afterwards anyway, to get the channeling crystal part of the quest.

finnaly got the felhunter. just another "situational spacific" pet. a little more hitpoints than the succubus, still significantly less than the voidwalker. damage output is less than the succubus but grater than the voidwalker.

at level 30, my void walker can kill a level 27 monster without aid. at level 30 my fellhunter can not. infact, the level 27 murlock was only alittle less than half life when my fellhunter died.

toss in it does not taunt at all, you hit it once it is on you.

it does have the ability to randomly remove a harmfull spell effect from you, and remove a benificial spell from a monster, then heal itself for 250 hp if it does.

so, i can conclued the only reason you would ever use it is in a group, fighting predomantly caster mobs.

for me, this still does not outweigh the ability to off tank an add with the voidwalker. even the stunn ability of the succubus and superrior damage would be a better choice in a group.

just my openion. no hurry to get it. it does not add to your ability other than the "gee wiz" effect. i see now why i have never seen a warlock with one and did not know what it looked like untill i summoned it.

Here's a few tips for people having just a little bit of trouble, myself just completing the quest after five long, hard levels of searching:

I've come to the conclusion that the box may not be in the same place for everyone , just like chest location.

When the say take the rightmost side, it means out of the three tunnels, choose the farthest one to the right, not the middle.

I went into the farthest right tunnel, and killed the centaurs on the right side of the room. There was a small waterfall and pond in the middle. I crossed the stream/waterfall/etc. to the left side of the same room, and fought the two on the other side. Now, for this particular chest location, I was facing a wall with a room on each side. I ran straight into the wall, not into the rooms, which was just a few paces ahead. I scrolled my mouse all around the wall of the same room, and I found my box.

I found it helpful to [/b] make your hearthstone in the Deepwater Tavern in the Wetlands or Ironforge for easy access.

I truly helped confused people, because I know I got the Illusionary Rod before my Felhunter.

After reading everyones comments I was scared of this quest but to be honest it was easy if you take it slow and clear the stragglers and the few in the water I never pulled more then 3 at a time if done right and you can live thru 3 at 30/31 if you play your cards right plus I got some chests as I made my way down the beach and cleared camps.....also as no one has mentioned it there is a quest in the Inn at Southshore to kill the murlocs you may want to pick that up! it compounds so if you kill enough go back hand it in and come back and look fo rthe tome again....

Put up a soulstone just to be sure you have an easy way back, but any level 31+ will not have many problems anywhere here unless they mess up and have more than one pulled at a time.&nbsp OR you go so fast you run out of Mana.&nbsp They are spread out nicely, and don't respawn so fast as to bother you if you are hearthstoneing out.&nbsp Cave is (Splithoof Crag) direct north of the Freewind sign post, not the cave to the northeast.&nbsp Kill level 25-27 using void as you go through the camp, it is worth the drops.&nbsp You will have to kill inside at every few yards also, I counted 14 level 27-28 inside on the right side until the Battered Chest was freed up.&nbsp The Battered Chest is before the largest pool at the end of the cave.&nbsp There is a crossover path just before the pool and the Battered is on this crossover path against the wall.&nbsp It is Dark in shadow from a distance, shows easy when you get close.&nbsp I did this three times just for the drops before going home - tons of silk and some green items.

Begin in Menethil harbor (North of Ironforge). Take the boat to Theramore.

Travel through the swamp (stay on the road, enemies are about level 35-39) and take the road through the mountains in the West to get into the Barrens. After you've reached the Barrens, head South towards Thousand Needles. You will reach the Great Lift.

When I got to the Great Lift, it was being guarded by 2 Taurens, a level 25 and a level 30. Since I was level 30 at the time, I was able to kill the level 25 first then the level 30 without much of a problem. Be careful, though, because if you're on a PvE server like me, you'll get tagged as PvP for the next 5 minutes. Any high level Horde players can kill you on sight. (A level '?' Troll got me, sigh.)

When you reach the bottom of the lift, turn Eastward. You'll reach a camp of aggressive centaur-like people. This isn't too hard to solo because the enemies are spaced fairly well. Fight your way through the camp until you reach a cave, which is on the Northern wall. The cave is just a bit larger than a fully zoomed-out minimap. Take the first branch to the right and work your way up to the ledge overlooking the waterfall. There, you will see 2 treasure chests. One is a normal 'Solid Chest' usually containing a weapon of sorts and some Dwarven cheese. The second chest is quite small and is harder to see it's labeled 'Damaged chest', I think it contains the Tattered Manuscript. Yay!

I haven't retrieved the Moldy Tome yet myself, but I do know that Southshore is an area in Azeroth: look for the little bay containing Menethil harbor on the map. Draw a line straight North and there's Southshore... it looks to be gettin' pretty close to Undead territory to me! Let's hope I survive the trek tomorrow. -)

Getting to Thousand Needles: A few ways for those without flightpaths.

One way is to go through Ashenvale and down to the Barrens, and then go South all the way (avoiding Crossroads if you're Alliance) and straight down past Razorfen, Ratchet, etc. until you enter Thousand Needles and take the elevator down.

Another is to come from Stonetalon mountains, going East until the Crossroads, and turning South all the way down.

Once you have reached the lift, remember that the guards do not follow you down . They are 25 and 30, but not esp. powerful. Run by them and jump on a lift, timing it carefully.

I've found that you can avoid Horde if you know where exactly you are going in relation to Horde cities. I study popular quests, and avoid the areas.

Remember that you will encounter plenty of Horde, and the only FP is down in Tanaris (Gadgetzan)

for those still having probs finding the chest in thousand needles: the coords are right, but you may be on the wrong side of the wall (same coords there, it's that close) in the cave. just go to other side. there is also another chest in this room. the quest chest is smaller and a bit hidden, true, but not really hard to find.

thousand needles was easy for me solo (lvl 32) using VW. monsters are far enough away from each other to pull them out one by one, just don't get too ambitious. -) hardest monsters should be lvl 30.

but i found it impossible to do the murlocs in southshore solo, no way, not with imp or succ or VW. after numerous deaths i found someone who was just "hangin' around" killing murlocs and teamed up, but it seems to be a tough job finding someone to help you out 'cause i think there is only this warlock quest requring killing those lvl 29-31 murloc bastards.

I was only lvl 30 when i completed this quest using my VW.&nbsp I set up a Soulstone and made sure I had plenty of mana potions (mana runs out fast) the centaurs are EASY to kill, all the curses and a couple of shadow bolts knocks em down.

As you get into an opening in the cave (after following the initial passage) turn right and just keep following the passage down, killing on your way.&nbsp It gave great XP for a lvl 30 and the tattered manuscript is easy to see once you come to it after crossing a small pool and waterfall and following the passage again.&nbsp Then I simply hearthstoned back :)

As for the mouldy tome in southshore, I swam west (still lvl 30) and you will notice lots of murloc camps.&nbsp Keep swimming west until you come near to the word "mine" on your map, it is the camp on the right which holds the tome.&nbsp I sent in my VW so it drew attention to itself, I ran in got the tome and quickly ran out again.&nbsp Unfortunatly for Helthak he died, but once you're away swimming they soon leave you alone.

Hope that helped :)

Just finished this part of the quest.

Did murlocs first. Like the above post, don't fear. It also helps if you take a friend along, as you know what those murlocs are like you will pull 3 or 4 at once. Get some DOT spells on, shadow bolt, job done. I believe its the fifth camp along from Southshore.

Then did the part in Thousand Needles. Very very easy. Didn't even pull the guards when I went down the lift. Just follow the path south and head east after that. The camp is called Splithoof Crag, and the cave is Splithoof Hold. Mobs in there are level 26-27 (what I saw), and mobs outside the cave are slightly lower, so therefore being level 30, its easy to solo.

BTW - hearthstoning back to IF, SW and alike is the way to go once you have done. I suggest doing Southshore first, as you can then take the grphyon to Menethil Harbour, boat to Theramore Isle, run through Dustwallow Marsh, then down The Barrens, but not taking the path.

first i went to thousand needles and looked for the tattered manuscript, and not only was it a pain getting there but finding it in the cave was really bad for me.&nbsp i searched all thru that cave for over an hour and i even went to the coords given above and around them, but i could not find the chest.&nbsp but then at my wits end i saw another warlock on the same quest and told her about my issue and when i joined her grp we went around the corner and *poof* there it was!&nbsp i don't know y, but i had been all thru that cave up and down, killed a hundred of those stupid mobs...but whatever, i got it finally.

i have just finished retreiving the moldy tome and that by far was much easier and more fun.&nbsp i had no problem killing off the 5 torn fins that surrounded the book.&nbsp i was even able to get the chest full of goodies right next to it.&nbsp at first i just sent in my VW to get aggro as i grab the book like another poster suggested, but when i got to the book, red letters came up on my screen saying "Can't Do That In Combat!" so that didn't work.&nbsp the location was correct (27, 72) in Western Strand, south-east of Southshore.&nbsp Good luck!&nbsp

And btw, the quest giver is in ironforge, in the hall of explorers' library at loc 74, 9.

I'll try my best to describe the location:

Enter cave
Go right
Once you get to the FIRST pool of water, head past it down the path.
To your left there is POSSIBLY a chest. It is also a cliff overlooking a room with 3-4 centaurs.
Back at the intersection from the pool, is where the tattered manuscript is. Small brown rounded chest

WEll did this at lvl 40 and was easy, hardest bit was to find the book in southshore. If you use titan or something that gives you access to co-rds its much easier to find. I swam out to near pentaron isle (sp?) and used my eye to scout the camps. the book is very small and its next to a box, not surrounded by very many murlocs about 3 i think and easy to pick of one at a time. grabbed the book and went to theramore to go to thousand needles. The Taurans that gaurd the lift can be picked of one at a time circlr round to the left and take that one then the other wont even come near you. the pvp thing is a pain had a lvl 31 try to attack me. Hah she died a painful death. I would sugegst if your going for this at around lvl 30 to do it at night when not many players are online so you can sneek through. As for the centaurs it is really easy to avoid all of them in the main camp. as for those inside the cave well most can be taken one at a time. The box is randomly moved but i found it just after you pass across the waterfall.
Good luck!

This quest isn't as hard as people say it is. DON'T STRESS IT. I kept holding my breath, waiting for the hard part when I first soloed it. IT NEVER CAME!

A few (7) tips (+ 1 comment on talents):

Southshore loc: 27, 72
Easiest way to Southshore: In Wetlands, take the road North toward Dun Modr & cross the bridge to Arathi Highlands (51, 10) follow the road in Arathi North, around a curve turning West (43, 55), & continue toward Thoradin's Wall (19, 29) heading West & Enter Hillsbrad (instead of turning West, you can continue North to Refuge Point (45, 47), learn the flight path, & return to where you head West) in Arathi, continue West, across a river (62, 41) then turn South @ 51, 39 & continue straight into Southshore from Southshore I suppose it's a matter of preference (I just headed west, not along the coast, but at the top of the cliff, taking a few hits from bears & spiders, toward Azurelode Mine (27, 58) then used common sense to find the easiest route to 27, 72 Pull smart, use the succubus to seduce adds, murlocs are humanoids!

1k Needles loc: 43, 32 (debated)
Easiest way to 1k Needles: In Wetlands > Menethil Harbor, take the boat to Theramore Isle, not Rut'theran Village In Theramore, head NW from the docks, straight out of Theramore, follow the road out (there's only one) & stay on it (reading the signs if you have to) until it leads you to the Barrens (I never got aggro once, just don't piddle around) in the Barrens, continue West, then turn South @ 46, 75 & continue south (past Razorfen Downs & Razorfen Kraul, both nice free xp if you go far enough to discover them) until you reach 1k Needles (around 44, 90) immediately after entering 1k Needles you can see the Great Lift & the Tauren Guards, use whichever tactic you prefer to get past them & down the lift/cliff at the bottom of the lift head SouthEast toward the Centaur camp, work your way to the norht wall, hop up on the ledge & follow it to the first cave (if you're up on the ledge, you can't miss it that way!) Centaurs are humanoids, succubus will seduce your adds for you!

The [Rod(s) of Channeling] are dropped by Dragonmaw Bonewarders. Once again, in Wetlands, enter Angerfang Encampment from the South (around 54, 54 - not 42, 43) where the Bonewarders are close to the entrance (unless you WANT to fight your way through the whole Encampment). Dragonmaw Bonewarders (humanoids) have Skeletal Minions (undead). Once again, with succy, this was easy... I just attacked the Minions, Bonewarders followed & were immediately seduced (all their actions being prevented).

Of course, if you didn't go demonology your succy might be a little sucky... with my talents, the duration of my succubus' Seduction is increased by 30%. =)

Use Curse of Recklessness on the humanoid mobs to keep them from running when low on health, Curse of Agony or Weakness on the Skeletal Minions, & a wand helps save mana. I didn't nuke a thing. Other than my Curses, I just cast the occasional Immolate or Corruption.

Read the posts on Alla's & Anonymous & become familiar with the quest, & anything that stands out to YOU or that YOU feel is important.

If you are unfamiliar with any of the zones you need to go through, or haven't fully explored them, LOOK THEM UP & GET FAMILIAR! If you don't, you're lazy or you want to do it the old school way & should expect the unexpected, the possibility of multiple deaths, & not complain.

Get CTMod (www.ctmod.net) so you have coordinates. It's XML (not an .exe file so NO, IT'S NOT A HACK! DUH!), doesn't slow anything down, is quickly updated & available for download after every patch, makes WoW life that much more blissful, suggested for raids, & lets you resize & move your action bars (SWEET)! & with CTMod, you can mark the locs for the tome & manuscript on your maps so you remember exactly where they are later on when level 30, less experienced 'lock players, ask you for help.

Tome of the Cabal - aka Moldy Tome *dunno why they call it this, when you scroll over it, it says Tome of the Cabal*. It is just south of the mine and the Hillsbred field (looking at the map) near the shore. If you go from the 1st camp from the west side it is the 3rd camp, counting the 1st 1 you see. The tome is behind the create to the west most box. its about 1 (game) yard away.

The Tattered Manuscript is in the caves north of galok (sp?). The cave is called Splithoof Hold. When you walk into this cave, as windilana said, take the right most path. Than you will see the water fall. Than after the water fall the path will split. It will be on the left path (but its mostly straight ahead) its a small chest that blends in. OK I just completed this quest this morning, and I have a few more adds to details on both the Southshore murlocs and the centaurs

1) in Southshore dock if you turn west down the coast, several murloc camps are littered with boxes and other debris, I just cast unending breath on myself and swam out to where only a few murlocs swim in the water, and just used the Eye of Kilrogg to scout each camp, the one I found the tome on was about the 4-5 camp and it was a clickable book next to the waterline.

2) The Centaurs part proved a little more challenging seeing as you run through horde territory to get to, I took the boat from Menethil harbor to Theramore, ran through to the southern Barrens, and proceeded down the Great Lift, (I did fight the Tauren guards just for fun :D)
When you reach the bottom of the cliff, turn along the eastern edge of the cliff and follow it until you reach the centaurs, you can continue following the wall to minimize fighting centaurs and will reach a cave called the Splithoof Hold, inside you wander until you find a damaged chest, which contains the tattered manuscript

You use an Imp, so you don't waste a soul stone, he hits you, then he ends up fighting with the imp. You walk to the lift, if he gets the imp before you get on the lift, fear, he runs away, no change in status.

BTW, I got to the waterfall in the caves, there I went to the left, the chest was in an alcove to the left and behind where I was standing when facing the waterfall.

Hearthstoned back to Ironforge (I set my home there to make the quest go faster).

i did not find the chest on the ledge as described. for me, it was in an alcove to the left as you are travelling along the north hall to the ledge.
