Power in Uldaman

Retrieve an Obsidian Power Source and bring it to Tabetha in Dustwallow Marsh.
Obsidian Power Source

Description

Now that the demon has been removed, we must gain a power source. Unfortunately, the best power sources are usually the oldest and the hardest to get. It's neat how fate likes to take a bite out of you sometimes, isn't it?

So you're going to need to go to Uldaman and defeat the obsidian sentinel there. He's big, he's tough, and his power source packs a punch!

I wish you the best of luck, <name>. And if you don't get lucky then, well... it was nice knowing you.

Just got through reading everybody's comments above, and wish someone had summarized it all. So here's my shot at it. Did I miss anything?

The Obsidian Power Source drops from the Obsidian Sentinel inside Uldaman.

The back entrance to Uldaman is at 67,44 in the Badlands in some island of rocks next to some ravine with elite dragons. Or if you don't use Cosmos, like me, then it's about 2/3 of the way across the map and a bit north of the equator. (Or if you're OCD, it's 67/100ths of the way across from the left edge of the map and 44/100ths of the way down from the top edge.)

1. He reflects all "targeted" spells.

This means:
* Use ONLY melee, wand and AoE spells (and, duh, Frost Nova and Mana Shields)
* If you use fire attacks, make sure to use a fire ward (dunno if you need one otherwise...)

This also means you only need to bring along one friend if you choose the right class:
* A shaman or priest can remove any of those reflected magical effects if needed (and, duh, heal you...)
* A tank can melee without worrying about all that reflection crud
* If you pick someone who is at least level 45 (preferrably higher), then you probably won't wipe at all.

2. He spawns "mini-me" adds, but gets weaker each time he does it.

This means you'll have an easier time of it if you:
* Kill each new (lower level) add before returning to the boss.
* Kill the boss after he has weakened himself by spawning a handful of adds. (Didn't see a specific number, but it sounds like you should wait til he spawns at least 3 or 4...)

3. He's sitting at the back instance entrance, behind the closed doors.

This means:
* You can run out of the instance screaming like a little girl, heal up and run back in again as often as you like. p

I'm about to do this quest. Being the wimpy little girl that I am, I intend to take advantage of ALL this info!

A couple of points that I don't think were very clear from everything above.&nbsp But great information from everyone...

1. AoE spells will not be reflected back at you, but the EFFECTS (stuns, slows) that proc off those spells might be reflected.&nbsp So if I hit him with a Flamestrike, I won't take any damage because I'm not in the AoE, but I MIGHT be stunned if I have that Talent and it procs.&nbsp Same with Blizzard and slowing. That being said, I've never seen him reflect Frost Nova.

2. Reflection happens about 50% of the time, but only on aimed spells.&nbsp CoC can't be reflected, however the damage from Blastwave CAN.&nbsp These are just my observations, feel free to contradict me, but I have combat logs to back this up.

3. The Guardians that splinter from the Sentinel ALSO have the spell reflection property.&nbsp They are level 35, non-elite, and go down pretty quickly. The Obsidian Sentinel is lvl 42 Elite.

4. Sometimes when you leave the instance and return, the Sentinel and his splinter will not have gone back, they will be right there.&nbsp Make sure you go in with Mana shield up, and Frost Nova ready.

5. THE MOST IMPORTANT PART
After he splinters about 4 times, and you have done the run in, run out to heal and mana up, you will now have the long fight in front of you.&nbsp If you have to leave at this point of the fight, you will be resetting all the damage you have done.
With him splintered so many times, he is very small, and does very little damage.

You can stand there with mana shield up, have him hitting you constantly, and your mana regen will be greater than the damage he does to your shield.&nbsp You can sit there and just regen mana if you don't want to produce a new splinter, and just refresh your mana shield every 60 seconds.

Otherwise, you want to be wanding him the whole time until he produces a new splinter.&nbsp At which time, Frost Nova, back off, Flamestrike, CoC, then either Blastwave or Blizzard or wand until the splinter dies.&nbsp

Then go back to mana shield and wanding the Obsidian Sentinel while your mana regens.&nbsp If you need health, next time your Frost Nova is ready nova the Obsidian Sentinel, back off and bandage.

During this fight, his new splinters will NOT reduce the Obsidian Sentinels health any more.&nbsp Once he gets to a certain size he just won't get any smaller or weaker.

GREAT BUFFS TO HAVE
Mighty Trolls' Blood potion, regens health.
Scroll of Spirit to increase your mana regen.
Any stamina buff, any armour buff.
Keep Ice armour up.

NOTES:
When he is splintered down as far as he will go (after about 4 splinters) he has about 8500hp.

If you have a wand that is doing on average 50 per hit (he does resist a fair number of hits), and let's say a 2.0 speed, it will take you about 6 minutes of uninterrupted wanding to take him down.&nbsp However, it IS interrupted each time there is a splinter, so you have closer to 10-15 minutes of just you and the Sentinel to look forward to.

And if you run low on health and have to leave the instance, he will heal up, and you will have to do it ALL over again.&nbsp Once you know he's not getting any smaller, you HAVE to stay the whole fight, dealing with the splinters as they appear.

As mages we're used to very quick, high-DPS-burst- damage kinds of fights. Break that habit quickly, it will get you killed in this fight...and it's a long run from the GY.

Oh, and the last part of the quest where you fight the mana surges is a piece of cake.&nbsp Just stand on the pier and pull them one by one.&nbsp They're ranged, but don't do too much damage.&nbsp Just have Dampen Magic up, and if you need to, stop and drink and eat.&nbsp You've got plenty of time.

I have always run into problems with finding Uldaman groups in general. When I did find a group that wanted to do it, they never wanted to swing by the area with the obsidian sentinel so I had pretty much given up on this quest.

I am now a level 49 frost mage, and decided to try to solo it. I followed the comments on this page and mixed some of the suggestions. Here's how I did it. (you can get all of this from above - I'm just being very specific.)

1. Make sure you have your mana gem ready to go.
2. Start off by putting up mana shield. (I also used ice barrier to save mana it worked very well for me)
3. Drink up to full mana.
4. Frost nova the sentinel.
5. Start wanding him. Continue until your shield breaks from his damage. Cast mana shield again and keep wanding.
6. Continue to frost nova whenever the cooldown is ready.
7. When he splinters and gets a guardian, leave the instance.
8. Food and drink up outside.
9. Go back in - the sentinel and his buddy will be standing in the original place.
10. Repeat the same process, but wand the buddy first.
11. Once the buddy is dead, you can leave the instance again if necesssary to heal, but I never had to.
12. Keep repeating this, and you'll eventually end up with a dead sentinel. :)

I only used one superior healing potion, and I didn't really even have to I was just doing it to be safe. Good luck.

Just completed this today as a moderately geared 36 frost mage. With him being six levels higher than me it was very difficult to hit him even with Elemental Precision (Resist chance -3%) The boss will splinter off and create adds every 20% damage he takes, when he does this his melee damage drops dramatically though. Each splinter seems to drop his damage by about 20% or so down to around 10-40 or so once fully debuffed. The first splinter was the most difficult to pull off as he starts off the fight hitting like a freight train hitting a stalled bus full of orphans, nuns and puppies (about 300-400 on cloth... ouch.)

Like everyone else has said, start off the fight at max range, put up the mana shield and frost / fire ward then nuke him as hard as possible before he can get to you. (May need to run out if first fire/ice-bolt is resisted or reflected.) Once he's down to 80% he'll shard and spawn the add... I had to run out at this point as it took everything I had to just drop him 20% the first time. Then with each set of adds I would blizzard at max range then frost nova, cone of cold, arcane explosion them down and run for the exit again.

This got much easier as the splinter debuffs stacked and even reduced the numbers of attempts taken to splinter him again. Once he was fully debuffed I got to start the long part of wanding him to death. This was remakably easy to do, even at 36, by just keeping mana shield up and wanding him down. He will still spawn his adds every 20%, but they are easy to deal with by just frost novaing, then CoC & Arcane Explosion til dead. I had Gift of the Naaru to heal myself, and for a mage it's pretty much a full heal every 3 minutes, and evocated twice to keep my mana up.

All in all this process took me about an hour. Probably woulda been smarter to get somebody to help me, but this way does work too.

The obsidian sentinel is a level 42 elite. He summons, at 75%, 50%, 25%, obsidian shardlings. This does 2 things, first, his damage goes down by 60 for each shard, he grows smaller, and both he and the shard have reflect magic up for as long as the shard is up. AOE down the shard, then focus dps on the sentinel. Soloing this is a royal bitch, i kid you not. At level 38 I'm still figuring out how to deal with him. I'm going to try wanding him down to the quarter marks(to conserve mana). His damage debuff stacks to 4 and persists even after you reset the encounter(by zoning out).

And yes, i'm insane. I enjoy a challenge :)

Did this as a 39 fire mage. I firstly made him grow smaller, reducing his damage by using AoE spells and wanding, then when he summons a shardling, run out of the instance, back in, wait for the shardling to despawn, and repeat. When he's at his smallest (detect magic, he should have 4 debuffs), wand him with mana shield active and when he summons an add, simply frost nova, use aoe spells (Flamestrike in my case, AE, CoC, Blast Wave) and repeat wanding him with mana shield, and use some mana pots/jades and/or evocation if you really need to. Just takes some patience

I did this when I was only 42, with a 47 Shaman (who didnt purge unfort. but did heal some) and I found a way that made it easy.&nbsp If I relied on the Mage's abilities to regain Mana + Used Powerful Mana Potions I probably could have done it without the Shaman (Though even for just piece of mind I recomend one.)

Things I used:
Gnomish Universal Remote&nbsp (If you cant make one, find someone who can!)

First, go in and fight the Darn guy until he spits out the Mini-Me's.
I suggest using Fireshield and then Only Fire based attack spells.&nbsp Once he has spit out a few Mini-Me's retreat from the instance.
Head back in and use your remote on the boss, then use him to attack the Mini-Me's He will kill them all and they will weaken him down quite a bit.&nbsp Once the remote wears off, fight him again using Fire Shield + Fire attacks.&nbsp Once he gets down and has Mini-Me's out (if you can't yet beat him) retreat and repeat.&nbsp After 3 or 4 tries at this He is so small and weak that it actually does not take long or much effort to take him out, only time and smooth rythem.&nbsp The key is doing enough damage to hurt him without doing so much that you blow your fire shield away before you can be ready to recast it.&nbsp Mana Shield does help a lot here but you will burn through mana fast so if you use mana shield have potions and any other means you can for mana regen.

I tried to solo this guy with a 52 shaman - I succeeded, but I had to run to the zone line every other time he split into more adds. Fortunately you can do this because the Sentinel is very close to the back entrance.

1. The split-off mobs are also 42 elites.
2. The split-off mobs and the original golem both reflect ALL spells back at the caster. This includes shaman Purge, so whenever I cast that at him I lost my buffs.
3. Just pure melee this mob down. Don't waste mana nuking him or trying to strip his spell reflection buff - just beat on him or his split-offs (Thought about this later: if you're a solo mage you have to cast at him - use your fire, frost or mana shields to absorb some of the damage he reflects back on you.)
4. The obsidian sentinel (golem) gets smaller as he splits off more mobs, but he still seemed to hit pretty hard, even after several splits. I saw, and killed, at least 6 rounds of splits, because I was solo. It can be done, especially if you focus on the split-off mobs as soon as they pop up. Change targets and whale away at the split-off guy. I had to zone out after killing one or two because the aggregate damage got pretty high if there were 3 beating on you. The splits can make 1 or 2 adds - never saw a split make more than 2 adds, for a total of 3 with the original mob.
5. I think a group in the low 40's could handle this mob and the split-offs, as long as they focussed melee on the main guy, with off-tanks for the split-off mobs, who died fast even though they were elites.
6. There are other (humanoid) mobs in the back of the room where the golem is, but they don't add as long as you pull the golem out into the hallway by the zone-in.
7. The golem is not classed as a humanoid (I think its a 'mechanical'), so I don't think sheeping will work. I was doing this for a friend's level 40 mage, but I had the mage grouped but outside the instance after he zoned in once to 'set' the instance. Besides, if the golem reflected a sheep spell onto your mage, this would be bad.
8. Although my shaman's Purge spell was reflected back to him, if he kept casting it, eventually the golem's shield was removed and I could land a nuke or two. Trouble was, the first reflected Purge took off so many buffs that I quit doing it to save mana. If you're in a group and had one guy tanking and others that needed to nuke for DPS, you could assign a shaman to strip the spell reflecting buff off the golem - that shaman just wouldn't have any buffs for the whole fight. The golem recasts the spell-reflect back on himself every so often.
9. A priest should be able to remove the spell reflector from the golem, I think, using Dispel Magic, but remember, the first one or two casts will be reflected back, stripping your priest's buffs too.

Good luck with this obnoxious mob.

This guy is soooo easy, either bring your higher level melee friends with you (which solves alot of problems) or attack the Obsidian with attacks like Fire Blast and Cone of Cold, or your wand if you'd so like until he breaks off a little piece...leave the instance and go right back in, he'll be back in his original position with the little chunk of him standing next to him...kill the little helper first due to the damage he can deal, then attack the obsidian again until he breaks off another piece and repeat...he eventually breaks off so much that he deals 1 damage to you every hit, just be sure not to use reflectable spells and kill the pieces of him asap. You can do this at 40 no prob, it might take 30 minutes or so and you might want a potion or 2 just encase you take more damage then you hoped. Reward is nice.

Having done this at level 50 due to a lack of Uldaman-interested parties, I can broadly confirm the tactics recommended by previous posters.

Initially, even though I had ten levels on him, Mr Golem does a fair amount of damage. If solo at 50 or below you'll likely need a superior healing potion for the initial fight, before he spawns any guardians. I used a few small mana potions/gems in later stages.

The advice regarding leaving the instance each time he spawns a friend is spot on. Eat and drink outside, roll yourself a new mana gem, and get back in there. I didn't stay outside longer than about 2 minutes.

When you return, I recommend chaining him and his guardian with Arcane Explosion. He doesn't reflect them, it'll only take a few to take down his guardian, and it damages him too.

As soon as he shrinks to being veery small, and the guardian he spawns is much bigger than him, then you have to stick it out. At this point he does indeed do a teensy amount of damage. AoE his guardians when they show up and keep wanding. I had about 4 more guardian spawns during this last phase before he went down.

It's an interesting quest this. /congrats to those who figured out this approach originally - well found! I'm a little vexed that it isn't soloable when yellow (or, I suspect, when green), but hum ho.

Anyone been able to solo one of these yett ?

After each shrink he does remarkable less dmg, when he's a his smallest he does 1 dmg which makes your mana regen higher than the 2 mana drainer by your shield.

Only use aoe spells like CoC, Arcane Explosion, frost nova, blast wave and flamestrike.

This quest is as simple as Blizzard implies, (green quest).&nbsp The trick is to realise that you can't use magic.&nbsp I solo'd this at lvl 45.&nbsp This is how:

Apply mana shield
Use frost nova
attack MainGuy with wand
rinse repeat

When MainGuy splits - leave instance and recover health/mana. Reenter instance and use the same tactics but on NewGuy, (he will die very quickly).&nbsp Now go back to plan A.

This will take a while but I didn't come close to dying.

There are 2 entrances to Uldaman in The Badlands. The first is up by Loch Modan and has numerous elite dwarves mining it. This takes you into the front entrance of the instance.

There is another entrance however, farther to the east guarded by a handful of critters. Right inside that entrance is a second entrance to the instance. The sentinal is in the first room you come to, you just can't miss it.

I killed him with a 48 hunter, 45 warrior, and 42 mage(me).

Another technique that works well is first splintering him down to his smallest size. You may have to zone out the first few times because he hits relatively hard. At his smallest point he averages 15 damage (To a 48 Mage). Wanding him down until he summons the shardling will conserve enough of your mana for the entire fight. To take care of the Shardlings simply frost nova then Arcane blast two or three times. Switch back to your wand until the next shard appears, rinse, repeat, and you shouldn't have much trouble. The spells he seems to reflect the most are any bolt spell, I never once had any damage reflected from the Arcane Blasts.

This is how he works:

1. He reflects all of the spells that are not AoE.
2. When you hit him at a certain % he summons a shardling which puts a debuff that makes him smaller and weaker.
note: the debuff will stay even if you zone out.
note: the shardlings also reflect spells.

Strategy:

1. This works for 2.4 as well, ive tried it. You need to make him spawn his first shardling, use your aoe spells, once this first shardling is up, zone out.

2. Zone in, kill the shardling with your wand (or aoe with the boss), use your wand with mana shield to make him spawn another shardling, zone out.
note: you may want to frost nova him.

At this point the boss should have 2 debuffs on him.

3. Zone back in AoE kill the shardling + boss, Wand him to death, you're done. :D !

note: mana shield should always be up when you're proceeding. !

I entered through back instance, had to kill three troggs to get to the portal.

Use your wand (and be careful to restore your mana shield/Ice Barrier) until he starts to split, then use Arcane explosion to take out the shards. It takes 3 or 4 blasts to kill a shard. Exit through the portal after killing each shard to regain mana and health until the sentinel is in his smallest form.

When he's in his smallest form you'll need to use your wand to damage him. Don't leave through the portal again, because he'll regain all of his health. When he splits into a shard either use your wand to take out the shards before returning your attention to the sentinel (at this point the shards do a lot more damage per hit than the sentinel which hardly does any). As long as you keep your mana shield up you shouldn't have any problem.

Solo-ed this as a 39 mage. Being an engineer, i used the universal gnomish remote, and controled the golem into the dwarves infront of him. Once he was at low health i released my control over him. (If they kill the golem you can't loot it).

After this i quickly zoned out and back in. The golem was then in its weakest or smallest form. I waited for the summoned shards to disappear so i could fight him solo. After they had died, i pulled him with frostbolt, if reflected i just zoned in and out and repeated. I got about 3 off before he reached me.

Once the golem is pulled, i mana shielded up frost nova and just shot with my wand. He will eventually spawn single shards throughout the fight which you should focus your attacks on since they die pretty easily. Also, note that the golem does not reflect AoE spells, ie. CoC flamestrike AE. I myself being frost specced used CoC.

Throughout the fight I used 1 greater mana + health pot, along with my mana jade and a few heavy silk bandages(very helpful).

Hope this helps someone in the future.

I did this at 43 (Frost spec) with a 42 rogue helping. She wailed on the sentinel, while I took on all the adds and just kept freezing everything in place. It did take 3 tries, but we pulled him near the zone exit so we could run out if we got too close. When we did beat him, she had 20% health left and I had full health. Using ice barrier and blizzard and stacking winter's chill took him out pretty quick. I only had spells reflected a couple times, but because they were frost spells they only slowed me down, which didn't do much since I was only blinking into the exit if necessary.

I killed the Obsidian Sentinel with a group last night but the quest log does not show "Power in Uldaman" as complete. I think I'm supposed to find the power source per the quest description. Does anyone know how to finish this quest? Thanks.

Thx for this tip, i solo'd him at lvl 42, frost spec.
Just Frostbolt until he spawns a little golem, then frost nova and CoC and AE till the little golem is dead.
This works perfectly with ice barrier, since it's not as mana expensive as Mana Shield.
With 4 Debuffs stacked he just did 1 dmg per hit to me, which is easy to absorb.
Then just wand him down, it's quite a joke.

Really, big THX for the tips :D

This strategy worked great. At 47 I figured I wasn't going to be doing this quest; was sort of past Uldaman. Saw this, and gotta say it was perfect. Took several tries before the initial Pyroblast hit (don't forget Fire Ward!) and had to zone him once after 2 shardlings were down. I can imagine it being a lot easier as a frost mage, what with their greater slows/roots.

Easily done as 39 fire mage, using these tacts its almost impossible to not do this by yourself :P

As of 2.4.2, the strategy above still works.

I just soloed this as Level 41 Fire mage. It took about 30 minutes and 2 deaths (by my own Pyroblast >_<... Yes, they can reflect spells) to get it done.

P.S: Excellent way to lvl up your wand skill.

Yeah, it's possible as an lvl 39 fire mage.. But I would recommend bringing a partner unless you want to fight for 15 minutes against one boss and using pretty much evrything you've got to survive. Just take him piece by piece, once you got him to splinter, leave instance. Heal and come back.
