Mana Surges

Kill 12 Mana Surges in the allowed time limit.
  •
Mana Surge slain (12)

Description

We are almost finished, but this last step is the most perilous, <name>.

I have the empty summoner's orb and am ready to empower it. We will do this by harnessing the energy of a mana rift. I'll cast a spell that will temporarily open a rift, from which creatures, mana surges, will pour out. You must defeat the mana surges and their power will be released, which I will then collect.

Kill enough mana surges before the rift closes and I will place all their collected energy in your orb.

Always hear about Mage AoEing is the best thing since sliced bread? Never been able to REALLY do it? Now you can! Go to the Dustwallow Marsh to receive this quest, Mana Surges, but be aware you would have to complete the quest to go to Uldaman before you can gain access to Mana Surges. This is a really nifty trick that I have never heard anybody talk about. I just happened to find this out on my own and startd to use it on my mage. With this nifty trick you can gain up to 55,000 xp/hr at level 40-45 easily, and yes, solo. Here's what you do:

1.) Make hundreds of food/drinks.

2.) Accept Mana Surges quest.

3.) Walk outside near the two torches and buff up. (Mage Armor, Dampen Magic, Arcane Intellect, Mana Shield)

3.) DELETE THE QUEST! (This is the most important part.)

4.) The mobs spawn, 2 sets of 2's, 2 sets of 3's, 2 sets of 4's, all the way up to 2 sets of 5's. The mobs will spawn 1-5 seconds after they die. So AS SOON as the mobs die, run away and start resting up for the next set of AoEs.

5.) Your able to AoE these mobs and get as much XP as you possible can, for 10 minutes, then the mobs despawn. After this, go back to step number 2.

Repeat all of the above steps to get some of the best xp in the game.

Once you accept the quest walk outside and put your back against the tree SW of the summoning field. This is outside the aggro radius of the Mana Surges and within fireball ranges.

They do not assist so just stand there, kill some, eat/drink, then stand rinse and repeat.

I tried this several times standing at the edge of the field and drew aggro from all 4 surges and died.

The Mana Surges spawn outside of the house relatively fast, but aggroing one does not aggro the others, so you can kill one at a time and rest up when necessary. The mobs are level 40 non-elites, so the quest is easily soloable.

Thanks to all who posted warnings to keep back from the summoning portal.&nbsp That strategy worked perfectly as you could attack one creature at a time with spells and ranged attacks.&nbsp

Unfortunately, no one mentioned that when you have killed the 12 creatures you need to visit Tabetha to complete the quest before the time runs out.&nbsp I had to learn the hard way that it does no good to hang around and continue to kill these guys after you have killed the required 12.&nbsp If you do that, and time runs out before you go back to Tabetha, even if you have killed 12 within the required time you will fail the quest.&nbsp So remember, after you kill the required 12, go visit Tabetha right away in the shack to complete the quest before time runs out.

And if you fail the quest, just "Abandon" it and go back to Tabetha and "Accept" it again (as many times as necessary until you get it done).

After a couple of false starts, and finally figuring out that the surges aren't linked, I began farming them.&nbsp Just kill as many as you can before the rift closes and they despawn (you can usually kill all of them).&nbsp Just abandon the quest and start again.&nbsp At 200xp a pop (lvl 43, nonrested), I'm racking up around 20k/hr xp, with little to no risk of dying, since they don't all come after me.

The process is as follows..
Buff up and cast Dampen Magic, make sure you have plenty of food/water.
When the surges start coming out, I open up with Fireball, Scorch, Counterspell, Fireblast.&nbsp Then if it's dazed at all, Fireball again for the kill, if they start coming towards me, either IAE or Missles to kill.&nbsp At 43, I've yet to have one live through this.&nbsp I immediatly target the next one and FB, Scorch, (no CS, not up yet), FBlast, and Missles.&nbsp You'll take some licks off the Surge's Lightning Bolts, but it'll drop before you do, and missles won't be interrupted.&nbsp Stop and rest when you are low on health/mana.&nbsp I can ususally kill 5-6 before I need to drink and eat.&nbsp Drop the quest, rinse and repeat.

The Celestial Orb can be combined with Hypnotic Blade: https://classicdb.ch/item=4015
Next to the Orb you can use the Prophetic Cane for +Int.: https://classicdb.ch/item=4028

But the real prize is the First Combo with +11 Int and +22 Spell damage and the pretty "Use" abillity. Use it with the Elemental Raiment and you rock in level 30-39 PvP. https://classicdb.ch/item=10587

About the Illusionary Rod and Celestial Stave:
I would prefer the Celestial stave because of the plus damage wich makes PvP and grinding a lot more mana efficient then just the +Int for larger manapool. But really: the beforementioned Hypnotic Blade and Celestial Orb rocks it all.

If you're not 40, don't bother trying to do this trick, it's near impossible below 40. Anyway, I tried doing the trick at 40 both fire and frost specced and I have to say, frost is way better than fire in this case. Why? Mainly because Ice Barrier is a lifesaver. Though Blast Wave does some nice damage, it's mainly protection you need for this trick (imo) so Ice Barrier is best.

+dmg gear is better than +int gear here, but +sta is also very usefull. I've got +83dmg atm and my cone of cold crits for 650, which takes away roughly 60/70% of their life.

The best way to do these guys is the way topsub described (flamestrike > immediately blink > frost nova > cone of cold > arcane explosion til dead)

Speed is also very important during these fights, if you slack you WILL die (unless you're lvl 42+ maybe). These guys can use instant shocks and from what I see, it doesnt seem to be on cooldown, cause one time I actually got hit by 2 shocks in a row from one mob (the rest was dead, so I'm sure it was just one mob).

Also, should you be AoE'ing and a new mob spawns while you're killing them, it would be wise to AoE the rest and then run. The best way to run is southwest across the water, since there are practically no mobs there. Just a little hint.

At lvl 40 they give 245 exp each, so 490 rested. If you aoe 1 group of 5 mobs while rested, that's nearly 2500 exp... need I say more? This trick is the best ever, I levelled from 40 to 43 in one day without being rested.

ps. these mobs use either lightning shock, lightning bolt or melee, so there's no point in using wards. Just get a friendly priest to buff you and you'll be fine.

Lvl 47 Mage - still switch from Illusionary Rod back to Celestial Orb (reward for this quest) once i've used up mana potion, mana gem, and have no mana left. My strategy for a level 40 ish frost mage:

Works on all packs including 5 pulls.
#1: From behind the house, cast Flamestrike
#2: Run into them, CoC
#3: Stay there, wait for GCD and FN
#4: Quickly run behind the corner of the house, just out of LoS
#5: Recast Ice Barrier, strafe, and Blizzard
#6: Once Ice Barrier goes down, run back to the corner of the house, and wait for them to path towards
#7: CoC and AE (should be 1 of each) to drop them

Notes:
#1: If done right, this will retain about 500 life, and about 1000 mana, setting up for the next 5 pull nicely
#2: I have very very little spell damage

You can do this solo at 40 as long as you dont make any stupid mistakes like I did.&nbsp I took the advice of other posts on this forum and cast Intell, Mage Shield, Mana Shield (recast it every pull), a Elixir of Fortitude pot, and Dampen Magic.&nbsp Stand well away from the garden where the Mana Surges spawn.&nbsp They won't aggro, even the first two.&nbsp I pulled each with Counterspell (that way you have about 5 seconds of uninterrupted mahem against them and they cant do anything about it), cast Cone of Cold as they approach and then Frost Nova to keep them in place while you back up and hammer.&nbsp I started out using Arcane Missiles, Frostbolt, Firebolt, Scorch and finished up with Fire Blast.&nbsp That would usually kill them but the problem is that it took too long.&nbsp So I switched to just hammering them with Fire Blast and then Scorch over and over again.&nbsp Both are instant cast and high damage (well at least the Fire Blast is) and didnt take as much time or mana to cast.&nbsp I found I could take down two without regenning mana or health.&nbsp I have 3558 mana and 1380 health with average gear.

The first time I ran out of time and failed.&nbsp I just abandoned and started over.&nbsp The second time, a helpful Mage tried to pitch in but ended up pulling all of them on top of us and we both died.&nbsp I ran back with two minutes left but was only able to get up to 8/12.&nbsp The third time I hit my Blink instead of Arcane Missiles and ended up in the middle of 5 of them.&nbsp Needless to say this is not a good strategy to use and I don't recommend it.&nbsp After returning to my body I just abandoned the quest even though I had time left and started over.&nbsp I killed all 12 with 30 seconds left, but the Blizzard Gods with their very questionable sense of humor took the opportunity to hit me with a lag spike just as I was turning in the quest and by the time the lag cleared the timer had run out.&nbsp I take from this that you not only have to kill the beasties but also turn in the quest before the timer runs out as my quest said I was finished but failed.&nbsp So, grumbling under my breath a few choice curses, I abandoned one last time and geared my loins for one last attempt.&nbsp This time I switched to just Fire Blast and Scorch and it worked like a charm.&nbsp I was down to 11/12 with 1min 11 seconds left, took the last one down in 20-25 seconds and turned in the quest before the timer ran out this time.&nbsp I chose the Orb as it goes nicely with my Hypnotic Blade (+9 dmg, 8 Intel, 3 Spirit, 26.8dps, and 1.4 speed).&nbsp Its a fun quest as long as the Gods smile on you and you dont make any stupid mistakes or come across any "helpful friends".

If you did the exorcism quest, which you must have to get this far, I think you can do this one. I'm not sure what level makes this quest do-able solo. I did it close to level 45, but I don't think I have so many new spells that it wouldn't have been solo-able at 40.

I needed help for the quest exorcising the demon from the orb at level 39 or so. These were easier not sure how much of that was my leveling. They mostly will not attack you until you attack them, which means you can pull one at a time. Usually. I did have two on me twice, and had to bandage after those fights.

As noted above, a nature protection potion would make this simple at ANY level. The mobs just use lightning bolts and would be sitting ducks. Counterspell works awfully nicely, though. I had some nature protection potions in my bag but didn't use them because counterspell got me through most of the fights you may want to use the potions at a lower level just to be on the safe side. You -will- get hit with some lightning bolts.

I just did this: Frostbolt to say hello, counterspell when the mob started to cast a lightning bolt, then nonstop arcane missiles until they died. You have LOTS of time on the quest timer, so you can drink up to 100% mana between mobs. I have enough points in arcane to get a lot of mana-free casts (and to reduce the threat of my arcane missiles by 40%, so maybe that's why I could pull one at a time), but I still used half my mana per mob. The trick to doing this quest, besides using counterspell or potions, as I see it, is resting between mobs to get up to full mana and health. You can just stand out front and draw them out of the yard one at a time, usually, kill, drink, get another. I think you have to kill about one a minute and that they go down in like 15 seconds.

The reward is an incredible staff for this level. I found and equipped a Staff of Jordan a few days before, so couldn't use this one and had to vendor it, but the reward (and all the funny things Tabetha says along the way) makes it worth all those trips through the marsh and to Scarlet Monastery (you were going to go there anyway) and Uldaman.

This quest is really easy when being a frost-mage and the use of nature protection potions. My alt mage is alchemist, so I made a couple of nature-pots since each one of the Mana Surges cast lightning-bolt.
Wait until 6 mobs had spawned, pop a nature-potion (+ dampen magic & manashield in case the naturepot runs out), and use Blizzard until the mobs are dead. Wait for cooldown of another nature-pot and use it, then repeat this with the rest of the mobs. Childsplay.

I completed this quest at lvl 38 largely in part to the very helpful tips posted here.

Most helpful tip: stand in front of the house near the dock.

I'd also add that counterspell is immensely helpful. If you cast it just as the mana surge is getting ready to cast the lightning bolt, it will halt the cast and he will be drawn to you. Throwing up the mana shield will absorb the physical damage as he pounds on you. I had to regen mana more often, but had hardly a dent in health throughout.

About 1/2 through, I used evocation to regen mana quickly and hit the last bunch.

So after reading all of these posts, the best advice that i got was to buy Nature Protection Potion.(They cost 2.5g per 5 stack on my realm right now) When you use these, the stupid things cant hit you (unless they get too close). You can fire away all your spells at them and kill them off one at a time. You dont have to kill them all at once, just one at a time. Make sure to keep your distance. Stand in front of house between it and the dock and fire away.
&nbsp
Another GREAT word of advice is to actually FAIL the quest. When you do this you can repeat it as many times as you like! At lvl 36, I'm getting 270xp a pop for each of them.

Thanks Luin2 and kirga for the advice!

DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT COMPLETE THIS QUEST! (as long as you are under lvl 45)

As a mage lvl 38 I tried this quest yesterday and found out that these surges are a really good way to grind exp. At lvl 38 I get 295 exp for every surge, in the 10min questtime I can kill about 20 of them. That's a nice amount of exp. You can abandon the quest and start it again as often as you like. There is no danger, if you just pull the surges alone, every second one use counterspell to get less dmg. Dampen magic also helps a lot.
If you are not interested in quests, or like me just want to get your character to lvl 60 because you already saw everything this is a nice, fast (but VERY boring) way to get from level 38-45.

I died a couple of times doing this quest. However, the last time I tried this quest I was able to single pull the wogs unlike before, I don't know why.
I am Level 42 Frostmage and I used this Nature Protection Potion and the usual other buffs.
I am sure every mage 40+ is able to solo this quest.
Just keep trying even when you fail, try to change your tatic and strategy when you fail.
Just make sure you are as far away as possible from the wogs, then you'll be able to single pull them ALL of them.
