Raptor Mastery

Hemet Nesingwary wants you to kill Tethis, an elusive, dangerous raptor in Stranglethorn.
Talon of Tethis

Description

Because you proved yourself to be such a go-getter in the jungle, let me tell you about a ferocious raptor that even I have failed to kill. Ajeck here calls this wily raptor Tethis.

If you want to prove yourself a true master, kill Tethis and bring me his talon. It would be a feat that no other big game hunter has accomplished.

I wasn't able to get the the coordinates above. They were too close to the arena. Here is where I found Tethis: 28, 43. Good Luck.

We found him just to the NW of the Arena, and he tends to spawn near that broken wagon. There are approximately 3 camps of 2 raptors around where he normally spawns, one which will be lvl 41-42 (red in color), and the other lvl 36-37 (green in color).

If you can, take those camps out first, as you can't be sure where Tethis will spawn in the general vicinity, and you don't really want adds.

Tethis himself is not that hard. He's also a light blue in color, so he really stands out from the other raptors in the area.

He respawns at the same rate as most mobs. Less than 5 minutes after his corpse decays (without it being skinned) he re-pops.

5 minutes ago soloed Tethis with my troll hunter 42, pet 41 (jungle stalker, tamed near :) ). Yeah, hunters are cheaters in PvE!
Simple tactic^ Freeze trap, Aimed shot, Concussive Shot, Scorpid sting. When its trapped - make a distance. Aimed shot, concussive shot, pet attack. Do not forget to heal pet, and it will be like a walk in the park.

This can be acquired by a level 29 twink if you have some help with the quest. Just make to start the chain early enough so that you have enough XP to finish it all!

Usually found around the back of the Gurubashi Arena around 29,49 . Stuck in the middle of similar Raptors. Make sure you clear all of the others before trying him, Raptors tend to 'shriek' for help. Raptors Name is Tethis, he's bright blue. If you don't have a coordinate mod, look around the 'A' in Gurubashi on the map.

Tethis has 5262 healthpoints and has a special attack called "Tendon Rip" much like the crocs outside Grom'Gol. (Slows down movementspeed).
He hits plate for 85-110.
He can be both slowed and feared, so kiting is possible.

My kill location was 28.44

Tethis hovers around behind (west) of the Gurubashi Arena.
I suggest being level 42 to solo Tethis as he's fast attacking and has a tendency to be near other Lashtails at the time.

If in a group this will be easy, if soloing I suggest pulling Tethis away from where he was and move him to somewhere which isn't inhabited by a large spawn.

Took me two tries as a level 42 Hunter. Pulled with pet, double tapped passive, brought it over to me, ran back, heal pet, shoot, shoot, shoot. Tethis down.

Good luck! Don't stop looking as he's a tricky bugger.

Essentially the challenge for soloing this quest is applying proper tactics and not brute force, at least for casters. The absolute key to this quest for my level and class(42 Undead Lock) is patience. Locks being cloth wearers and scantily armored, are eaten alive by beast like this if they take them on head-on. Part one of the challenge of Tethis is to do everything you can to avoid adds. Unless you're exceptionally good or a higher level player than me, if a second raptor enters the fray before you have Tethis on the ropes, you're going to be dead. So either very carefully remove nearby potential adds or wait until he moves to an area where he won't get help. If you're soloing this one at a lower level and he's hanging with close buddies with no sign that that will change, you may want to take a pass and come back later or bring buddies yourself. Part two of the process is to use your minion or pet to take 100% of the abuse if at all possible. So make sure you don't Dot or immolate or do any casting too soon.

I found Tethis within fifty yards or so of the north west corner of the arena, ranging between there and in a northwesterly direction to the overlook to the northwest near some basiliscs.

It's not that you can't solo this quest it's more a problem of competition! Both Horde and Alliance do the Jungle Stalker quests and as the drop rate on the feathers is very low the whole area is one of total pwnage! You are competing with other groups to pwn Tethis and the group that gets the first shot in wins! If it's not your group you will have to hang around for a re-spawn and hope you see him first!
The other proble is that at times it might appear as though there is a shortage of Junglr Stalkers but they are all dead and waiting to spawn on top of you!
If you really want to solo this quest its best to wait until the server is quiet otherwise you will not be alone!

I did this quest when I was a lv 41 Paladin and Tethis was a 43 Elite. I was able to do it by myself using a Mace that does 37 dps. I just cleared out three other raptors around him first and then we went at it. I will mention that it did get down to the wire but I still had one or two things left that I could have done (like drink a health or mana potion).

Int's not true that this quest isn't worth soloing. Depends on server ur playing on, ofc. I play on Nagrand (quite a new server) and there were absolutely no ppl hunting Jungle Stalkers.

I was doing even the second quest for the chieftain (or w/e he is) collection the feathers. Drop rate isnt that bad, bad i spent at least 30 mins getting all 10.

just soloed Tethis on my well-equipped 39 priest (it's all about your manapool) using a smaller exploit but no special priest skills or abilities. you could also wand him if you wanted but that'd take AGES.

look at this screen and be amazed by my paint skills:
http://apustolacis.net/pics/tethis_solo.png

go find that cove (it's right to the west of Tethis' spawn location)
cast ONLY when you stand on one of the casting spots, otherwise he will evade your attacks.
when he gets close just run over to the other casting spot (Levitate helps)
rinse
repeat.

you can do that without being hit a single time.

He can be done solo from the beach.
From just north of the arena head straight for the beach walk up a little you'll see him marching back and forth in and out of the stalkers lvl 41.
Once he makes his rounds to the beach side he's alone. At that time pull him to the sand where you can fight him solo just you and him.
Oh, one thing, there are some basilisks lvl 40 on the beach wack them first, real easy might get a trinket in the process.

This quest is not really that difficult, and if I can do it, so can you.
I am a lvl 42 Hunter with 1600 ac and reasonable AG stats. I took out Tethis on my own by simply unleashing the pet, using rapid fire with the odd Multishot and Arcane shot thrown in. I may have used volley just for the hell of it (looks cute!).

To find Tethis:
I set off from Booty Bay heading north along the main road. When I reached
level with the cave marked on the map on the right of the road (this is the southernmost cave on the map) I turned left off the road and started to head north west towards the Guburashi Arena through the jungle (I needed to get some food for my pet anyway!)

I kept heading north until I went past the Arena on my left. There are low foothills to my right and now I find that I am in the middle of "Raptor City". Nestling in the foothills on the right are pairs of raptors (lvl 40ish+lvl 36-mother and baby-ahhhh). I avoided these as a dangerous distraction. I kept going towards the mouth of the river and when you are at the northern end of those foothills, Tethis is there (Co-ord 29,43 mentioned below is accurate for the area). Now, a fellow guild member told me to kill everything around Tethis to ensure no adds. I did kill a lot but I remember that there was one raptor quite close to him when I attacked - but it didn't participate.

Tethis dropped the talon as expected and I banked 3600xp plus the chest piece.

Hope this helps

Look for him northwest of the Gurubashi Arena, near the beach. There's a line of hills in that area. His spawn site is tucked away next to those hills, between them and the beach.

The sad thing is, I completed this kill solo as a level-43 Hunter. The quest reward, a nice LEATHER chest armor, is obsolete for me, since I can now use chain armor. Worse, since it binds on pickup, I can't even give it away to someone who will benefit from it! (/cry)
