Of Forgotten Memories

Travel to the Undercroft - at the southernmost section of the Eastern Plaguelands - and recover Taelan's Hammer. Return to Tirion Fordring upon completion of your objective.
Taelan's Hammer

Description

To help Taelan regain what he has lost, you must gather items from his past.

The first such item is a toy that I gave to him on his 7th birthday. It was his most cherished possession: A miniature war hammer; an exact replica of my very own.

After I was banished for treason, his mother told him that I had died. He was taken to my false grave at the Undercroft, where he buried the hammer along with my memory - forever.

You must venture to the Undercroft and recover Taelan's hammer.

This quest can be solo'd at 60.

Location 28,86

1) Stand right on the dirt pile
2) Right click dirt pile to start the quest which calls the 4 non-elite mobs that come.
3) Stay on the dirt pile until you loot the hammer cause if you are even a few feet away, quest will fail.
4) Kill the 57 named mob only (you dont have to kill the rest) and quickly loot the hammer
5) Run, kill the rest or die, doesn't matter cause you're quest is complete.

Please vote for this post and "unvote" all the crap written above. LOL.

QUEST IS NOT AT 28,86 - - IT's AT 28,87.

The O T H E R Grave/Dirt Mound is at 28,26 -- and it's an entirely different quest -- one which you can acquire by working your way into the crypt itself and clicking on a scroll on the floor at the bottom of the stairs.

And YES if you are a druid this quest is UBER challenging to solo.&nbsp I gave up after 4 deaths and brought a priest.

--- ever notice the folks that seem to say such and such quest was SO EASY to SOLO often tend to be rogues?

OK, this is extremely difficult to solo as a rogue, but I just did it as a 59 rogue. I am combat spec with a 16.57% chance to crit (not sure if that will make sense once BC comes along, but anyway...) it took me a few tries to figure out how to do it... first thing is make sure you have major healing potion or two.

First click the mound of dirt next to the gravestone. The mobs walk in instead of spawning right away so immediately stealth. Next, if you wait for them to get to the grave they start to mill about, which makes it a bit hard to position yourself, so distract them before they get to the grave. Cheap shot Mercutio and immediately use evasion. This should keep you alive for most of the fight. once evasion wears off, blind one of the graverobbers to try and lessen the DPS intake. Also watch out for your health as you'll need that health pot eventually... I was close to dying so once mercutio fell I Vanished. His body didn't disappear or anything, so I waited a few seconds for a bit of health to come back. Once I had some health I looted the corpse real quick and sprinted away.

Hope this helps someone...

You do NOT have to kill Mercutio last in order to complete this quest. Take him down and loot the body as it hits the ground.

Just pulled it off today, got the hammer then took it hard from the rest of his buddies.

There is no need to kill him last.

Just did it on my 59 rogue killed him first, looted him and received Taelen's Hammer from him - the 3 cronies were still alive.

But this only worked if i did not CC one of them first. If i sapped one of them at all then i couldn't loot the hammer no matter in what order they died.

Now this may apply to other forms of CC but it certainly applies to the sapping of the target. I just spent a good hour testing this out, and at least in my case this is what occured.

I just used Mechanical Yeti and he took the damage long enough for me to tear Mercutio down loot the hammer and vanish.

shadow priest, solo'ed at 60.

i did as the very first poster suggested, with my own little behaviour scheme
shield me, back off and wait for them.
mind blast + sw:p + mind flay
(now all are hitting me, and they all have arrived "at me")
fear, shield, mind blast, mind flay mind flay.
shift+rightclick loot, run away, shield and fear again.

tada. killed only one, the named one, did not even hurt the others. this at 16th feb. 2006, patch 1.9.(4?)

As of 1/26/06 (patch 1.9) his body de-spawns upon death. Submitted a ticked and a GM tried to tell me it was my UI causing the issue... I mean heck, some stuff I can see, but a de-spawn? Anyways, fortunatly I'd done it with a buddy who had the same issue (and uses no UI mods), so they accepted it and will (hopefully) be fixing it soon.

Edit: Tried the above solution and it worked for me, thanks!

Frostmage lv 57.
1. Loot the dirt.
2. 4 mobs spawn, ~30 yd away (named + 3, around 5k hp) At the start they are waking to you, out of combat.
3. 5 blizzards and a few frost nova later they are dead. (maybe use a mana pot)
4. Loot the questitem from the named mob.
5. Done, go deliver quest :)

And yes, I was around 40 yd from the dirtpile and the named around 30 yd away from it when hi died. So that you have to stay ontop of the dirtpile for the questitem to drop is false!

phew got wiped twice but managed to do it third time.
Most important factor that helped me were potions. Went to IF before fight, bought greater stoneshield potion, winterfall firewater, intellect boost scroll. Also used my last charge of my mechanical yeti. Stay standing on top of the grave and let him come to you, concentrate on him and (if you're a paly) just keep in recasting SoC and shield+heal if neccessary. If you use a greater stoneshield potion beforehand (+2000 armor for 2 mins) then you won't be able to use a healing potion in the fight unless it lasts for more than 2 mins because of potion cooldown. Also if you happen to be in IF get a priest to give you blessing of fortitude before you go, very useful :D

Hey all.&nbsp I'm a level 60 Rogue, spec'd Combat daggers.&nbsp 5/8 NS, GG, and CHT.&nbsp I found this a very easy quest.

1: Open the grave and Stealth right afterwards.
2: As all his mobs walk towards you, Sap the named, pop Evasion, blade flurry and Slice and Dice.&nbsp The first two mobs should go down easy and the named should awaken while taking the third.
3: Finish off the 3rd guy and immediatly use blind on the name.&nbsp This will give you enough time to back off and bandage yourself.&nbsp If he awakens while your fighting the third mob then you can still blind him and have enough time for bandages.
4: Open up with Gouge on the name followed by: > Backstab > SS or 2 > Gouge > Backstab > Kidney shot > Thistle Tea > 2 backstabs and he should be down No prob.

This is a easy strat for any medium or well geared Dagger Rogue.&nbsp Also, I killed the name last and did not get the body bug some people talk about.

Not an easy quest. After 4 deaths, I copped out and summoned an Infernal. Costly, but effective:

- Clear nearby trolls
- 'Use' the dirt mound and stay near it (to avoid the 'disappearing corpse' bug)
- Summon Infernal (stun + AoE aggro)
- CoA + Corr + Immo on Mercutio Filthgorger
- Howl of Terror
- Finish off Mercutio Filthgorger
- Loot
- Run

Triggered spawn, ran back a bit
Mind controlled 1 of the cohorts until he died, then dropped SW:Pain and Holy Fire on Mercutio, AE Feared him and his 2 remaining buddies away, then nuked Mercutio till he died. Shielded myself again, and the body was gone. Not seconds from killing, but litterally as his corpse hit the ground it disappeared and I got the message that I didn't have the rights to loot that corpse. Then the 2 remaining robbers blew through my shield and 3k hp while I sat with my jaw on the ground.

Solo'd this as a level 56 Warrior. Took a Superior Healing Potion. Shoved shield on, killed a troll near and got full rage then ate some food to get back to full health, had about 80 rage at that point. Spawned the guys from the grave, then theres 3 or Level 55's and 1 Level 57 start walking towards you but aren't instantly agro'd.

Equip'd shield, ran into him (don't charge as you should be in defensive for next bit - anyway, you're rage is already well over half). Used Shield Wall, got the Level 57 one to under half health before shield wall wore off, then I used Intimidating Shout and all the other lvl 55's scattered, drank a Superior Healing Potion as I was at around 50%, and I switched to battle stance and re-equiped offhand weapon and finished the Level 57 off, fear on the other mobs wore off just as he died, so I looted the hammer (was at 25% at this point), so I used Piercing Howl when they all came back and I did a runner.

Pretty tough, but was a fun fight :)

It *is* possible as a feral druid. (was 57 at the time)

My sequence (you should only attack Mercutio): Open grave. Back up so you don't aggro them right away. Cast Regrowth, followed by Rejuvenation. Switch to bear form. Faerie Fire, Demoralizing Roar then swich it up between Mangle and Maul. You can also use Frenzied Regeneration when it's warranted. When you're around 40-50%, cast Barkskin. Heal yourself with Healing Touch, then follow it up with Regrowth and Rejuvenation. (Use a healing potion if you need to, they *might* kill you before you get the first heal off) Switch back to Bear Form. Mangle/Maul until Mercutio's dead. Shift-click his body so you auto-loot, go into Travel Form, run away with his kid's little toy warhammer.

My warrior just did this quest with a priest. As you would expect I tanked them all while he healed me. I killed all of the grave robbers first then killed the named. It is kind of a pain to do it in that order because the named incaps over and over but I did not have any trouble finishing the quest. We both had the quest and had no problems with the corpse disappearing.

As a 57 balance druid, I just finished this one with a 55 mage buddy of mine. He kept distracting the adds while I worked on Mercutio, hitting him with moonfire, insect swarm, roots, and starfire. It was really tense towards the end because I finally managed to get the drop and my buddy killed off one of the dwarves, but we were both almost out of mana. I gave him innervate, he finished off the last two, and we rode away.

Ok,

First time I did this I sent my VW in thinking, this will be easy... not so much... they incapacitated my VW came after me and kicked the snot out of me (they're pretty tough for non elites)..

Round two, same deal only this time I AoE fear.. doesn't last long enough.. damm, dead..

Round three, when they incap my VW I sac and continue to unload on the name to try and loot him before I get whacked... no luck on that try either...

WTF!

Round four... "I wonder if they can incap my Inferno?" So I tried it... easy as pie that time around... as I was looting I checked my inferno's status and he was down to about 10% so I hit the hills running!

Long story short... use your inferno and save yourself the hassle =)

completed this quest solo as 57 warlock.

first I tried the usual "let voidwalker tank" tactics, while fearing the boss (he's the one that uses gouge), and wiped like 4 times in a row, not even getting close to succeding.

Then I changed tactic, and it worked amazingly well, but only if you're a warlock I'm afraid. Open the grave, run away from it so you don't aggro the dwarves. When they stand still, drop an infernal on them, then immediatly fear the named dwarf.
Keep him feared through the fight untill the 3 adds are dead, and just heal the infernal. Maybe drop a corruption and curse on agony on whichever dwarf it's hitting, but don't nuke away. Between the infernal's melee damage and it's fireshield, it can hold aggro from all three adds untill they are dead. Then it's one on one against the named dwarf, which is easy enough.

Ironically the infernal was a hairbreadth from killing me once it turned aggresive :)

As always, I should have checked this string before opening the grave. Got the same results as others. The dwarves surprised me and kicked my butt. Since I'm a warlock, I decided to try the inferno suggestion from earlier post. First, I decided to farm a couple of soulshards as my stash was down and in the meantime an Alliance came in and opened the grave. I was about twenty yards away, killing a mob and for some reason, the dwarves agroed on me instead of the Alliance. Then the Alliance guy jumped in and joined my VW who was agro'ing the dwarves. I stepped back, targeted the named and burned him down. Walked right into the middle of the fight without drawing agro and grabbed the hammer, and the last I saw of my VW and the Alliance, they were fighting dwarves. HAHAHA! Rotten!

Since this looks near-impossible for Druids to complete solo, I'll try to explain what I did. (Level 60 Druid) A word of warning, though, this is rather dependant on spec and equipment. Not all Druids will be able to use this without finding some workarounds.

This is what I used that not every Druid has:
1- Second Wind trinket. I guess using Innervate would do the same, it's just nice to have both if you really need more mana.
2- Feral Swiftness talent. Makes you go 30% faster in Cat Form.
3- Feral Faerie Fire. Cast Faerie Fire in Feral forms with no mana cost.
4- Insect Swarm. Instant Cast DoT.
5- War Stomp. Tauren racial skill.

So, I headed to the graveyard. (This was like my 8th try at this point and on the previous attempts I tried to tank them all which resulted in complete failure.)

After activating the grave, try to get on the other side of the fence. This won't block the mobs, but it'll allow you a quicker escape. Make sure you killed the few zombies that could be in your way.

Now, when the grave robbers group approaches, target the named. Blast a Moonfire and Insect Swarm and quickly shift to Cat. The Dwarves have like 115% speed so if you stay in Caster form, they'll pummel you, but with the 30% speed from Cat, you could actually outrun them. Don't, though.

All you want to do is get ahead of them, make sure they can't hit you. Keep using Faerie Fire to make sure you keep aggro. When both DoT's are over, shift out, blast another Moonfire and Insect Swarm and shift back. At some point you'll run out of mana so use Second Wind or Innervate.

I suggest running towards the quest giver. There's not a lot of mobs in the way, and as mentionned somewhere else, he might help you kill the mobs if you haven't killed them by the time you get there.

In my case, the named did not drop from the DoT's but started to run slower, and then he walked. It's a sign he might turn around soon and you'll lose him. He had like 300 HP left so I turned around and attacked him, using Claw twice and he died. I didn't have the disappearing corpse problem so I ran a bit further with all 3 grave robbers on my back. I shifted out, hit War Stomp and shifted to Travel Form. I looted the corpse and ran till I lost aggro from the 3 adds.

My suggestions if you lack one of the things mentionned above:
1- Second Wind: Use Innervate instead.
2- Feral Swiftness: Try to go Travel Form, but you'll have to shift more often to make sure you keep aggro. (Since you won't be able to spam Faerie Fire in that form)
3- If you have Feral Swiftness but not Feral Faerie Fire, going Cat Form won't help much, stick with what's suggested in #2.
4- Insect Swarm: Stick to Moonfire. You might not do enough damage to kill him before you reach Fordring though, but he'll help you.
5- As long as you don't have the disappearing-corpse bug, you can just outrun the remaining adds until they drop combat and then you can loot the corpse.

Hope this helps a few Druids. :)
