Scarlet Subterfuge

Speak to Myranda to gain the Scarlet Illusion. Travel to Hearthglen while under the Scarlet Illusion and deliver Tirion's Gift to Highlord Taelan Fordring.

Hearthglen is to the north, Taelan should be inside of Mardenholde Keep.
Tirion's Gift
Provided Item:
Tirion's Gift

Description

I am what you would call, an illusionist. Though I may be able to create an illusion to allow you entry into Hearthglen, be warned; my powers have their limitations.

Should you travel too far from these lands, the effects of the illusion will cease. The spell itself takes a great amount of concentration and power from me, and thus, I can only sustain the effect for a short time.

Speak to me again when you are ready.

I just finished this quest solo, and here's how I did it:

Talk to Myranda and get the illusion, and then run up to Hearthglen.
&nbsp - Mining or gathering herbs will drop the illusion, and you'll have to run back to her to get it again, so avoid temptation.&nbsp Also, you are unable to mount while Illusioned, so you'll have to hoof it.
Taelin is the largest building in the back (the building that matches the Theramore Barricks), on the second floor.
When you turn in your quest to him, he'll go aggro to the scarlet, and kill the four guards in that room.
He'll then have an escort quest for you called "Redemption?"&nbsp Accept it.
DO NOT REMOVE YOUR SCARLET DISGUISE WHEN HE TELLS YOU TO.
On your walk to the tower (just SE of Hearthglen, not the one in the keep), he'll be attacked by numerous mobs:
&nbsp - Do not assist.&nbsp You can't attack them anyway because of your disguise, but don't help.&nbsp He'll own them all.
&nbsp - Just outside the keep, he'll be attacked by four 60 Elites.&nbsp They'll get him down to about half, or a quarter life, but he'll still win alone.&nbsp Do not assist.
When you get to the tower, Grand Inquisitor Isillien will come out with a few friends.&nbsp When he does, back up all the way against the hill opposite the tower.&nbsp If you're a night elf or a rogue, stealth.&nbsp If not, stand as far up the hill as you can.
They'll talk, and fight.&nbsp Taelin will die, no matter how much he heals himself.&nbsp After he's dead, don't move, just wait for Lord Tirion Fordring to show up -- this is Taelin's father.
He will proceed to kill them all easily, and again, do not assist.
After they're all dead, he'll talk a bit and cry over his son's body, and then have a yellow ? for you.

NOTE:&nbsp If your disguise for some reason falls or fades, stay close to Taelin until the part of the tower .. he'll kill anything that aggros you.

Easy Mode:

Don't. Do. Anything.

When he says to take off the disguise, ignore him. When he mounts, ignore him. Just follow and watch the show. When you get to the spot with 4 60 Elites, just watch. When he fights the Grand Inquisitor, just watch. When the Grand Inquisitor kills you, DO NOT RELEASE, just watch.

When the quest is over, release and go back to where you died to get your reward. You're gonna die, just go with it.

BEFORE YOU DO THIS QUEST...

You can use the disguise that Myranda the Hag gives you to finish two other XP-rich quests in "EZ mode".

The Mark of the Lightbringer - Part 1/2 - lvl 58 req
(https://classicdb.ch/?quest=9474)
Requires you to get a box in one of the towers along the road.
6200xp + 250 rep/Exodar, with an easy follow-up quest worth another 7750xp + 350rep

Unfinished Business - Part 3/3 - lvl 55 req
(https://classicdb.ch/?quest=6025)
Asks you to go up the tower that's in the middle of Hearthglen and face the main gates.
6200xp for an elite quest and all you have to do is walk through some friendly 55-60 elites.

I strongly recommend you complete both these quests before you talk to Fordring in Hearthglen, as you can't stray too far from him once he begins the escort quest. And in the worst secnario, if you get ganked, you can still run back to get another disguise from Myranda.

Last note, do NOT remove your disguise when Tirion tells you to. It is NOT necessary and only makes the escort harder. The down side is that you cannot loot the bodies along the escort becase you did not aggro them, however, I find it's a small price to pay for a little extra assurance I won't die from mobs (especially at the last part when he, himself dies to mobs 9_9")

I just did this quest not too long ago. I took off the disguise because of the false claims that Taelan will die if you don't help. So let me set things straight.

1) He can take out the elites with so much ease, it's really rather funny. At the start, there are 4 around him and I took off my disguise and helped out thinking I needed to. He beat them down so fast, I think I got about 10 hits in.

2) If you aggro any, walk them over to him and he'll beat the hell outta them for you.

3) HE WILL NOT DIE TO THE PATROL OF 4 WHEN YOU GET OUTSIDE THE TOWN. He beat 2 of them down to where they "ran away in fear" and had a 3rd to half health before he even got down to 1/4 health. At this point he threw a holy light on himself and was almost completely healed. He then proceeded to kill every single one and the fight was over. He was NEVER in danger of dying, EVER. And I didn't help him one bit.

4) When you get to the tower and Taelan calls out the level 63 elite and his bodyguards, he will die. That is the purpose of the quest. Then his father, Tirion, rides up on his horse, mourns the death of his son and proceeds to beat the hell out of all the scarlet crusaders at the tower. If you thought Taelan kicked ass, Tirion does so 5 times better. I don't think he even took 1/4 damage during this fight. After Tirion is finished, he goes through a little speech and then you talk to him to finish the quest and get your rewards.

So, you don't really need to do anything. Just follow him the entire way, let him do all the fighting, and sit back and watch the carnage he causes. He will never need your help although you can assist him if you get bored.

I ran this on my Draenei Paladin last night. I don't know if they changed this quest at all or not (bug maybe), but it appears that if you have your disguise still up when Taelan dies, the quest will fail. This happened twice for me. On the third try, I dropped my disguise when Isillien approached him stood back a bit to stay out of aggro range and the event went on normally.

So just to be safe, remove your disguise before Isillien engages Taelan and stand back.

When you get to the tower Fordring will call out some scarlet crusade 63 elite. just watch the show as with the Onyxia key chain. Fordring will die but you can usually just stay far enough away to stay out of combat. After Fordring dies, just wait for his dad to come riding up and lay the smack down. He well kill everyone then if your still alive just go talk to him to claim your awesome reward!

How I did it:

Talk to him. He says to remove your disguise - remove it. Follow him. If you get guard aggro, walk to him and he will kill them for you.

When you get outside of the keep, mount and follow him. He'll get attacked along the way, but will kill them with no trouble - including protector Lorick.

Just after you leave hearthglen, he will be attacked by several lvl 60 crimson elites, he will kill them all.

As you get to the tower at the bottom of the hill, the inquisitor will come out, everyone will aggro. Before this, take off your clothes and stand inside Taelan. You will die but DON'T release, just stay dead by him. He will die.

Daddy comes along and kicks their arses, says his bit and you get completed quest. Now release, come back and talk to daddy.

EXCELLENT rewards!

I can confirm that I just completed this quest with ease following above advice.

the disguise was not removed at any point during the quest.

Just follow him on foot all the way to the tower, do not assist, even when he was on minimal health i was tempted to jump in but i didnt and he turned it around and killed the patrol. followed him to tower where I stood ont he hill and watched.

what was strange at this point is that he died, with his health bar at full , prolly bug. however i waited a while and hi sfather came along and killed everything. question mark came up, i was still disguised, i walked up and completed quest, choose reward and hearted out, still disguised..... did not have to kill anything.

A friend and I both completed this quest tonight using the classic "Slide" strategy, with just a minor twist at the start since there was two of us.

1. Both of us got the illusion and entered the keep.
2. My friend talked to Taelon first, who then proceeded to kill the 4 SM guards nearby.
3. After he does this it's time for any other party members to talk to him. I did to cash in my quest.
4. Once all party members cash in their Subterfuge quest (the one that shows "Completed" when you pick it up from Myranda), ONE party member can start the Escort portion. The rest of the party should see a pop-up confirming you want to join that Escort quest.
5. The rest proceeds according to Slide's instructions. We stayed in Disguise and let Taelon kill all mobs. Sometimes we mounted as we followed him along, so being mounted or not makes no difference.
6. Followed him until the tower. He went down to about 30% health vs the 4 SM patrol just outside Hearthglen on the road, but no real danger of dying.
7. Got to the tower and stayed well back ON the hills opposite. Watched the show although I think we missed out on some dialogue.
8. Taelon died, we stayed on the hill and 30 seconds later his dad showed up and killed everyone. As my friend and I walked up to him we got the Redemption Complete onscreen.
9. He says a few final words and his quest thingy pops up whereby my friend and I both cashed in and got the reward...

Soloed this today (60 priest)

Rode to Hearthglen and handed first part of quest in- stood up the steps behind him and made sure not to stand too close while he killed first mobs.

Accepted the next quest to escort him. DO NOT TAKE OFF ILLUSION.

Make sure you stand behind him and when outside about 2 mount lengths away from him AT ALL TIMES.

He will fight everything - even if his health seems low.

When he mounts his horse, I mounted mine (DID NOT REMOVE ILLUSION! probably as I wasn't too close to him) and followed again at a good distance from him (but not tooo far!)

He died at Ilsien whilst I sat on my horse and watched - waited until his dad turned up and killed them all.&nbsp Make sure you're not close but not too far - so you can see the chat log of what his father is saying and then you know it will count.

Completed quest painlessly, no aggro and well within the 30min Illusion timer.

Good Luck! (It's quite easy really)

Followed him out of town to where the 4 elite Crimson Guards walk up to him on the path,&nbsp de-costumed and sheeped one.&nbsp He killed those with ease (I've never seen him heal to full, but I have seen him die twice to this pack of guards).

I followed him down to where he kills the Inquisitor, and about 8 elites spawned, owning me in the process.&nbsp I waited it out and did not release, which let me finish the quest when his father had slayed all the guards.

Luckily a 70 priest was nearby and res'd me after the yellow question mark came up.&nbsp TY Jumperbones of Dethecus!

This was my favourite quest chain in the entire game, and this quest was especially good. It was so dynamic and well done, it actually had a good story.

To start, I talked to the abnormally large scarlet highlord inside the building and began the quest, while he was pwning the 4 guards around him, I spotted a chest in the corner. When I interacted.....my disguise vanished, so I did the remainder of the quest as an undead, not a scarlet. As he walks out you dont need to do anything, just follow near him and he slaughters everything in his way. When you get out of the main keep he tells you to stop for him to call for his abnormally large mount. He mounts.....and he moves the same speed as before :(

Just mount as well an stand next to him at all times, you shouldnt even enter combat. When he goes down the hill towards the tower, he begins dialoge with the inquisiter and tells you to defend against the scarlet elite. The elite dont attack you though, they stay attacking the huge highlord with the inquisitor. I stood far off out of aggro range and watched the whole thing from some trees across from the tower, never had to move from there and didnt aggro a thing. At about 40% health the big guy just plopped over dead and the scarlet elite started walking around in circles, I have a feeling if I were closer they would have started raping me.

After about 20 seconds, daddy comes riding in to the battle to see his son dead. he then proceeds to massacre the inquisitor and the 4 orso scarlet elite with barely taking damage. He then pops up that yellow question mark and I got my breastplate, it was an easy quest with a great reward!

I just did this quest tonight, and I really don't think it can be done the way some people have said.

Once you get to the gates of Hearthglen Taelen will not survive the 4 Elites that attack him.&nbsp I've done the quest (unfortunately) three times now.

The first time a chinese frost mage farmer ran around and attacked everything then trained them onto Taelen so he could get the loot off them.&nbsp Ridiculously annoying since it tacked on like 15 more minutes to the quest and I thought he totally screwed me.&nbsp But him getting agro from the Elites probably actually set me up to do it the first time as Taelen killed them no problem as they were chasing the mage half the time snared or rooted.&nbsp When we got to the tower I sat way away on the hill in disguise and when Taelen died the quest failed.

The second time I did it I dropped my disguise in the keep and followed him out.&nbsp I wasn't able to heal him.&nbsp (I'm a 60 shaman, for the record.)&nbsp When the four Elites came I watched to see if he could kill them and they destroyed him, quest failed.

Third time I stayed in disguise until we got to the Elites and when I saw Taelen losing I dropped disguise, dropped earthbind, threw a chain lightning and an earth shock, then kited a couple of them around.&nbsp Taelen handled two no problem, then killed the last two.

At the tower I tried kiting the Elites that agro on you during the fight on an epic mount, but they eventually caught up to me and beat me down.&nbsp I waited for the father to arrive and reincarnated, threw a couple random shocks to ensure I was flagged as in combat with the crimson, and successfully completed the quest when the father killed them.

Overall a giant hassle and super time consuming, especially if you go into it thinking Taelen can kill the elites.

You can't really attack Tirion so no 'Horde' flag and then kill him. I've done this quest as Horde and it is one of the best quest chains around with a nice background story to boot. The rewards are all good, the hard part is choosing what you want.Tirion is in "Of Blood and Honor" Warcraft novel. This seems to be the continuation of his story.

I kept my disguise up until the gates. I let Taelan aggro the four 60 elites. I wait until they flee and then finished them off. Some of them are pallies so it is best to finish them off before they heal themselves and get back to killing Taelen.

I watch them kill him at the end and then his father. I was watching it from too far to see any of the dialogue. I'll be doing this quest again using a more stealthy class.

I just finished the quest using Slide's strategy.&nbsp He called it perfectly......don't remove the disguise. Don't fight.&nbsp Walk to the hill opposite the last tower (just across the road) and just watch.&nbsp After he dies, poppa comes up and kicks butt (do not help poppa, stay over on the hill).&nbsp It is really nice loot, particuarly the&nbsp chestpiece to tank with.

BTW, two things that did happen when I was doing the quest that I'm pretty sure had no effect on the outcome:

(1) I did pop a lesser invis potion when he was getting killed by the tower and I was watching from the hill, but I beleive it was completely unnecessary, as it wore off quickly and all the bad guys ignored me anyways.

(2) A couple of toons (Horde, and I play Horde) did come by and tried to help poppa.....I don't believe they had any effect on the fight at all, and they did not try to help for very long.

I didn't have much problem with this quest.
The way to the tower was pretty easy. I didn't have to turn the disguise off. Taelan had some problems with the crimson guards outside though.
He nearly died even though he healed himself a couple of times. And those heals didn't heal very much.
But he sruvived.

When we got to the tower he called out the 63 elite and they started fighting. I still was disguised.
Taelan died as he should and the guards attacked me even though I was disguised.

If you're a hunter you could've dropped a frost trap a few steps away while Taelan fought them. Run around the snowy area until Tirion realizes what has happened (even better if you're survival specced and have spent some points in Entrapment).

Other classes do what you can to stay alive. Rogues use evasion, mages blink around, druids use Nature's Swiftness and go bear, whatever you can think about.
Won't take long until Tirion shows what he can do. )

I failed the first time but no one here explains how one can get the quest again, so it took me a while to figure it out. Here is how :
You abandon the quest on your log, and go back to Myranda in Sorrow hill, she will give you the illusion disguise again but not the gift, don't worry about that. Go back north to Hearthglen and find Taelan again. He will have a marker on his head and so the quest can be started again.
Follow all the instructions that the previous posters have given, and stay near Taelan when he dies, don't worry if you get killed. Don't release until Tirion comes and cleans the area, when you see the completion text, release as ghost and go back to get your body, Tirion will have a question mark on his head and you can get your rewards!

There are a few keys to this quest.

First, getting the quest does not mean you have the illusion.&nbsp Talk to the Hag a second time and have her put the illusion on you, you will physically look different.

Go Straight north, walk right by the Scarlet folks, they won't bother you.&nbsp The guy is at the very center of the castle in the middle of the area, the pic above shows where the guy ends, not starts.&nbsp This leads to the escort quest that takes him to that far tower.

He asks you to remove your disguise when the escort starts, remember to right click on the icon (it shows like a buff) near your photo to dispel the disguise.

The escort can be done solo because this guy kicks ass.&nbsp Don't help him much, if at all.&nbsp He attacked a group of four elites and I went in and did something which aggroed three of the people off of him and the moment I died I also failed the quest.&nbsp We were really close to, if I'd've been lazy and sat back and watched he could've easily taken them.

I just died, so I have to go back and redo it.&nbsp Hopefully the hag can give me a second disguise.&nbsp If I have to walk in there without a disguise then the quest is over for me, there are simply too many people to fight without at least a five man group.

Don't help him at all.

I just did this a second time (you can get the illusion again and again) but this time I was walking behind and a pat aggroed on me and, big surprise, I couldn't take three elites myself so I died.&nbsp The super sucky thing is that my corpse was now in the scarlet castle and so when I ress'd there was no way to stay alive, I ran up thinking I could restart the quest but the guy disappeared and wasn't there to start the quest again until all the guards were also back up and since I didn't have the scarlet disguise they killed me instantly, I had to res at the graveyard and wait ten minutes and I'm on run three now, no way I'm helping him fight htis time.

Get the custome at Myranda (Uther's tomb), run into the keep and talk to him, get the scort quest. DO NOT remove disguise, let him fight all mobs, he can do it, except once out of the city, where 4xCrimsom Guard (lvl 60) come, help him there (remove disguise first). If you don't help him there, he will probably die most of times, I have seen him winning one of four times.

At tower, just try to get appart from fight, once High Lord is dead (yes, he has to die) you will get aggro, try to stay alive (pot, any buff you can, evasion, etc.) while the father comes, once he comes he gets all the aggro and kills them all but...

If you die at tower, just don't release spirit. When you release, quest fails, but if you wait there the father will come and kill the priest, and the "complete" appears and the question mark on the father.

Release then and come to the tower as fast as possible to get the quest done.

It all initially starts from this guy: https://classicdb.ch/npc=9847

From killing bats and stuff to finally in Stratholme scarlet part. After that it leads to gnome in Sorrow hill.

if u do this quest on spinebreaker, bring a full party cause 3 horde rogues iboss, limyou and another who's name i cant remember do this quest repeatedly to farm gold from mobs once the quest npc has engaged them. My first try at this quest was at 7:30pm, got ganked, saw them repeat this quest several times, then tried again 6 hours later only to see these exact same hordes and no one else do this quest 6 times and they even managed to gank me once.

I failed on the part where you need to talk to him in the keep, i got a lot of aggro and dropped fast.. you can however go talk to the hag, get re disquised and head back to him, i was worried that i wasnt going to be able to complete it, that was not the case.

The disguise enables you to solo the elite part of the Heroes of Darrowshire quest, where you have to pickup Davil's Libram from the Hearthglen Townhall.
Opening the Libram and picking it up WILL break the disguise though, but there are no mobs near, so you can safely heartstone out and return for the real part of the disguise quest.

And to confirm: you CAN mount, but can NOT mine / use / open stuff with the disguise

Fordring is upstairs at the typical boss location for that kind of building, located at 42,14. You can choose to keep your disguise up and let him do all the work or you can drop your disguise and help him. I personally chose to drop mine in order to speed things along, but he's more than capable of dealing with anything but the 4 elites that come by himself. Only attack Fordring's targets and you won't ever draw agro.

After you clear the gates, you'll get attacked by the 4 elites everyone else has been talking about. Give him some time to build agro, and once again, just make sure to only attack his target..you'll both be fine.

The final fight takes place at a tower a little ways down the road. He tells you to protect yourself from the elite, and he's not joking. They MAULED me. Badly. However, I didn't (DID NOT) release my spirit. I stayed to watch the fight from my corpse. He dies, then his father (the originator of this questline) appears and kills EVERYTHING. Wait until his father is done with his little bit, it'll tell you that you've completed the quest and Fordring Sr. will stand up with a gold questionmark over his head. Release your spirit, run back as a ghost (I don't know how long you have, but I didn't have any trouble making it back in time), res at your corpse, and turn in the quest for your reward.
- OR have a friend waiting to res you after the fight, either way.

You can do this quest easily no matter what your class.
