Elven Gem (10)
Goggles of Gem Hunting
Provided Item:
Goggles of Gem Hunting

Description

The treasure has been on the sea floor so long that the gems have calcified into thick stone. But the power harnessed in these goggles will allow you to locate them easily.

A little gnomish ingenuity goes a long way!

So borrow the Goggles of Gem Hunting, <name>, and see if you can collect some of the lost treasure for Captain O'Breen.

I'd swim down there myself but...um...well, I have important scientific business to tend to up on the safe, dry land....er, yeah.

Use the goggles provided by the quest giver and search throughout the Drowned Reef.

The gems will appear as golden dots like other tracked items.

See http://classicdb.ch/?object=2712 for the dots at WoWHead.

basically all u gotta do is go around the reef with the goggles on and look for the gems on ur minimap...dispatch any enemies around, and you can get the gems. watch ur breath too. if it wasnt for the breath aspect, this mission would be easier.
TIP: if you dont have breath potion, only do one at a time, unless its in a shallow area or something. be patient. my rule was: start to head up at 1/3 breath.

I'll say just buy underwater breathing from auction house. I got an okay rate, 5 for 70s. The rest transactions were going 5 for 3g.

What am I doing wrong?&nbsp I'm wearing the goggles, I can locate the calcified gems, I can right-click to open them, the 'opening' bar appears and completes but then nothing - no gem!&nbsp Anybody got any ideas?

So happy that I had breathing elixirs on me - because aside from when you're on the boat and maybe can't see the caster (and then get a net thrown over you), fairly easy.

Am submitting a screenshot of the gems - these days a yellow dot will show on your mini-map so that you're not swimming around just trying to find them. :)

I just did this one, and was glad for my (Item #20557). I ate treats until I got Yeargh... for its swim speed buff, then drank an (Item #5996). After that it just became another collection quest. The naga ran interference, but I needed to kill them for (Quest #664) anyway. The twenty minutes for the pumpkin treat buff was just enough for me to complete this quest, Drowned Sorrows, as well as (Quest #662)Deep Sea Salvage. Obviously this isn't an option during the rest of the year, but if you happen to be ready for this quest during the holiday, take advantage of it.

This quest is kind of rough without underwater breathing. I did this quest kind of late at 44 and the mobs down there aren't rough at all, but just keeping a watch on your air... blech.

Difficult water w/o a breathing pot or buff.

Typically when you arrive at the gems your breath meter is 1/2 gone.Collecting more then 1 gem in a single straight dive is nearly impossible.

In the event you do drown you have a long run back. Give yourself some time and don't be greedy.

XP in 2.3: 5450

Went to do this quest at 45 and the Doctor wouldn't even talk to me. You have to complete 'Land Ho!' (from Lolo the Lookout) before any of the others will talk to you. It was gray at 45 and thus no '!'.

Do this, deep sea salvage, and drowned sorrows at the same time.&nbsp If you can get an elixir of underwater breathing or something like that, these quests are a piece of cake.

Also, the respawn rate on these gems is crazy-fast.&nbsp You don't need to bother looking all over for every location.&nbsp Just hang around a few easy-to-reach ones and get them over and over again.

For some reason, the one under the turtle shell kept respawning, so I sat there with my druid in water form and got 8 out of 10 that way.

Fairly easy.

One gem re-spawned at the same place, 3 times in a row. Not bad :D

The rep is not a bug, bloodsail buccaneers and booty bay are enemies, so if your rep goes up with one, then naturally it will go down with the other.

Most of these gems once looted will respawn within a few seconds so it's worth hanging on after you've taken one. After two or three loots though it's time to move on to another as they don't continue to respawn endlessly.

Be wary of this quest. The Daggerspine Raiders can net you for around 7 seconds, so if you don't have some form of underwater breathing, use caution. Try pulling them at max range and fighting at the top of the water. The casters go down wickedly fast, and their sole spell is Lightning Bolt. Piece of cake.
