The Absent Minded Prospector

Archaeologist Flagongut in Menethil Harbor wants you to bring him the Stone of Relu and Flagongut's Fossil.
Stone of Relu
Flagongut's Fossil

Description

Prospector Whelgar now holds the original fossil at his site in the Wetlands. When I discovered the Stone of Relu, I believed it to be the key to unlocking the mystery of the fossil.

While I traveled on the road to meet Whelgar, I was attacked by raptors and the relic was lost. I don't know which one of the mottled beasts swallowed the relic but if you can retrieve it, I can unleash the power of these artifacts.

Bring me both the Stone of Relu, and the original fossil he holds.

At the close of this quest, the following dialogue is presented:

Archaeologist Flagongut begins to manipulate the Stone of Relu over the two fossils.
Archaeologist Flagongut says: By the stars! A spirit has been summoned!
Aman says: Who hath summoned forth Aman?
Aman says: Ah, I see you toil with relics of the past.
Aman says: Be warned that even your creators are fallible.
Aman says: Digging too deep into your past might bring an abrupt end to your future.
Aman dissipates before your eyes.
Archaeologist Flagongut says: It's a mystery of the past indeed! But a key to our future!

Makes one wonder what foreshadowing the devs are throwing out there....

The stone is held by one of the Mottled Raptors/Screechers/etc on the RIGHT side of the road as you leave Menethil. It is a completely random drop and might take you a while to get it to drop.

The Fossil is inside the cave at the Excavation site. If you dont know where the site is, as you kill the raptors, keep heading away from Menethil and you will eventually see the entrance to it. There is a path on the left side as you enter the site that leads up a hill to the cave, the Fossil is actually a little earthen mound on the ground, you dont have to click on the guy beside it to get it.

To find the excavation site, follow the road East from Menethil until the hills get close to the road on the right (South) side. You should see an opening in the hills and a sign with a shovel and pickaxe on it, the site is in there. Go up the ramp on the left side and Whelgar is in the cave at the top. Talk to him first and he'll give you another easy quest that you can do at the same time as this one. The fossil is a big rock on the ground next to Whelgar, pretty tough to miss, then go down and kill raptors. I killed about a dozen before getting the drop and it was a piece of cake at lvl 32. It had been in my quest log for ages, but was still green and I got 2200xp.

I confirm with Henryk about the fossil...its in the cave sitting on the ground at Whelgars Excavation Site at the top of the hill where other lvl 25-28 raptors are. The entrance to the Excavation Site is at coords. 35.42. As soon as you enter the site look to your left and you'll see a road that goes up hill that leads you to the cave.

I was able to get the stone from a mottled screecher close to coords 26.46

When finishing this quest the NPC Aman spawns and gives you a warning "Be warned that even your creators are falliable". There's no followup quest, unfortunately.

To get to the excavation site, follow the path out of Menithel or whatever. Continue on it for about 2 or 3 minutes. Keep watching the right side of the map until there is a break in the mountains. That is the entrance.

Now to get the fossil, just keep to the left of the site until you get to a wall and a pathway leading up. Go up the pathway. If you are lower than 20, i recomend you get a high level to accompany you for there are a couple raptors. Once you get to the top, go into the cave and just right click on the fossil which looks like a mound of dirt.

So, after reading all of the confusion here, I was concerned that this would take a while.&nbsp

Nope, and here's how -

A short distance outside of the city you will see a banner (Mining Banner with Blue Symbols), off the right side road, and beside a gap in some hills.&nbsp Turn right and go through that gap.&nbsp There are some Raptors milling around just past the gap, just hang out there and kill those.&nbsp You will usually get the drop in 1-4 kills at most.&nbsp Then, look to your left and you will see another flag and a path leading up the hill.&nbsp Take that all the way up until you reach the cave, go inside.&nbsp There, ON THE GROUND is the fossil, click it and head on back.&nbsp Took me 10 minutes, tops.

So don't be confused by all this jibbajabba, just shibbashabba like I do.

This quest also goes great with https://classicdb.ch/quest=873 because it requires you to kill Screechers and Raptors, obtainable from a man outside the cave for the Stone.

I killed off 20-30 raptors yesterday without the damn thing dropping & today it came right off the 2nd raptor I killed. I can definantly recommend that you do this one along with the Omer's Revenge.

Prospector Whelan won't give you his quest until you hit level 25 (as of 10th Jan 2006) so it might be worth waiting until then before you head to the excavations to do this series... at level 25 you can solo this quest, Whelan's quest, and the guy outside his cave (follow the left-hand wall all the way up the hillside path when you enter) pretty easily if you advance slowly and keep good awareness around you.

An important point that hasn't been mentioned so far is that when you finish the series, Whelan doesn't give you the final fossil part that you need - it's a large flat rock on the cave floor in front of him which you can interact with only when you've done all of the prerequesites.

If you do the associated series for the dwarf outside, you'll end up having to kill the named raptor - this is fairly easy at level 24 (for some classes) if you make sure you split the nearby unrelated razorgaw pop carefully (ie. when it's wandered away from the named). As a hunter I then placed a fire trap between me and the named, pulled with my DoT sting attack, sent the pet in as he crossed the trap (getting the DoT from that on him too) and then just blasted away making sure to control aggro. I believe it would be a tough fight for a mage or warrior to solo at that level as the named is level 29.

The stone seems to be a fairly rare drop (I killed about 20-30 of these guys yesterday and didn't get one, then got one on my first kill today).

The razormaws tend to be 25-26 and the razorgaws are 26-27, neither have very many hp, but they hit hard and fast, and they are very social.

Be very careful of the repop time in here because it's easy to get swarmed by 3 or even 4 raptors and end up back at the graveyard with a tough CR ahead.

Good luck!

Try this:

I've often found that unless the quest is very detailed, ("dire mottled boars in front of Orgrimarr", ect.) and you get the chance between two or more levels of beast in which the item(s) drop from , then it usually, not always, drops off of the higher one. For instance, Raptors range from 21-27 or so inside the Excavation. In https://classicdb.ch/item=3065 , although probably inacurate, this is proven for most.

Good luck.

This quest consists of killing a bunch of level 23-26 raptors very close to MENTETHIL HARBOR.

If you are in Menthehil it will take you 30 minutes or so if you do it as part of the other Excavation quests.

If you want to stay in Ashenvale, this will suck the life out of you, wait until you move to the wetlands

The directions for both the Raptors and the cave that are printed above are accurate.

Wetlands (39,52) - Fossil
It is in the cave on the floor, all you need to do is click on it.

All around Wetlands (34,41) - Stone (rare drop from Raptor) If you are doing the various killing raptor quests in the area, you should get the Stone while finishing up your Raptor Genocide.

I got the stone of relu from a mottled raptor (had to kill about 7), then proceeded to whack the raptors in the excavation site...until I was told where the fossil was. It was sooo easy, just go up the hill and the cave at the top. I walked in, no mobs (maybe because there were a few high level chars around), and got the fossil.

Good exp too, 2000.

Stone of Relu drops from the raptors on the way up the road to the prospectors cave which is on the left hand side of the dig site as soon as you walk in. There are only two raptors on the way up they seem to always spawn in the same spots.

It really is a piece of cake, no need to run around killing 15,000 raptors for this one.

The Stone of Relu is NOT a rare or random drop, though you cna get it by a lot of grind-work...

All you have ot do is go to the excavation site and pick up Flagongut's Fossil.&nbsp When you start to walk back down the ramp a raptor will run up at you seemingly out of nowhere.&nbsp Kill this raptor and he drops the Stone of Relu.

After getting the quest from Flagongut in Menethil Harbor, go to Whelgar's Excavation Site in the Wetlands. When you get there, go up the ramp to the left and into the cave. In the cave you'll see Whelgar, on the ground near him is Flagongut's Fossil- pick it up.

Next run back down the ramp and start killing some raptors. WIthin five kills I got Relu's Relic from looting a Mottled Sytheclaw.

After you have both relics in your pack, go back to the Harbor and see Flagongut.

Ok, has Blizzard failed to complete this series of quests? That ghost Aman comes and warns you of digging up the past. Something about even your creator being fallible? And then there is no follow up quest!

Ok the Fossil is next to Whelgar in the cave. The Stone of Relu can be found off of any of the mottled raptors, really. It was my fifth Screecher. My 19th raptor though.

I did this with my level 20 hunter (are hunters overpowered or what?)

As per the other comments, go up the ramp and see the guy... BUT the raptors near the town (20,45)-ish in the wetlands dropped the Stone of relu. I was expecting the guys in the excavation site to drop it (they look like raptors), i tried to take one on (it was level 24 and killed it), then tried a level 25 and after going back for my corpse decided to hunt next to the town and one of the 22/23 raptors there dropped it (altho, it was at least 12 of them dead before it dropped). I wasnt expecting it and caught me off guard a bit.

These raptors are not very near the excavation site.

As a side note, the raptors drop tooths that sell quite nicely to the npc's (in my vastly limited experience)
