The Spirits of Southwind

Free the spirits of 8 Tortured Druids and 8 Tortured Sentinels in Southwind Village, and then return to Layo Starstrike at the Valor's Rest graveyard of Silithus.
  •
Tortured Druid slain (8)
  •
Tortured Sentinel slain (8)

Description

To our southwest lies a tragic site - the ruins of Southwind Village. This is where our work should begin, <name>.

From what we've learned, this village was once a night elf base of operations for Silithus. It's long since overrun by the silithid hives that infest the wastes. I can only imagine the horror of the village's initial sundering...

The tortured spirits of fallen druids and sentinels wander the ruins aimlessly. Explore this locale, freeing the souls of these wretched beings as needed.

Seriously ? How did you guys lvled upto the point where you could get this quest ? All these no good messages telling, no shouting, the readers that this quest sucks ?

This is thottbot, a place to get info on how to complete a quest, not to tell ppl WoW sucks. It doesnt OK ?

If you are unable to complete a quest within the timespan you like you got 4 options:
1. "Thott" it.
2. Come with a good tactic yourself.
3. Invite a mate to quest together ( guild, /who )
4. Level and come back later.

Now for this quest, there seem to be alot of ways to succesfully survive the adds. Either by outrunning or outsmarting them. earthshock, entangling roots, earthbind, hammer of justice, frost nova... All seem to work well to either kill the druid/sentinel on a distance or outrunning the adds.

Now to give some info my favo class, mages. We can solo this quest at lvl 54 for all I care. Get to max range (30/35/41 yards, depending on ur build) and start shooting. Remember to use scorch when the mob is to far away for instant cast and to close for a 2,5sec frostbolt/3sec fireball cast. Stay close range and hit him with arcane missles ( which should be the improved, uninterruptable ftw ones) untill the mob is down to 5%-10%. Frost Nova, move back and kill. Remember to counterspell the druid when he is healing himself. Easy to see the green leafies around his hands ( HS animation ). If you do not counterspell him, he will gain approx half his health. In the case frost nova fails, use Cone of Cold and blink.

Now as a frost mage this should really be a walk in the park. All of the mobs are melee attackers so kiting them with FN or CoC absolutly the best way. Added bonus, is that with a good frost-build,&nbsp you should be able to kill them with 10-20% of their health when they're frozen.

P.S. I tried it when lvl 54, but I got summoned for an instance when I just killed one. Came back as lvl 59. A breeze. And fantastic good XP. ~250 for the NE, and ~300 for the adds @ 59 !
When only 1 or 2 spawned, it kill them anyway using my favo kite procedures ( FN, DPS, CoC > blink, DPS, FN, DPS ) No good drops, just really nice XP

55 Druid fighting Druids. Interesting. Didn't know about the bugs the first time. Almost got them anyway but heal drops to 50% speed during a dual attack (with 3 attacking, just kiss your druid ass goodbye) and I couldn't instant heal fast enough. OK, a surprise every now and then is interesting. I didn't need that armor potion anyway. What's 90S when you can kill a mob and get 5S? Uh wait, that doesn't work does it....

Went back from the Tombstone Tavern and whacked a scorpion just to get my fingers working. No loot and 1 rugged leather. If I wasn't a skinner, my reward for that would be....nothing. Hmmm. Lovely place, Silithus. This time I was ready for the bugs. All I had to do was kill the druid. Weird, but I know what he can do, right? Same thing I would do. Whack, heal, bam, heal, chop, heal, thunk, heal, swipe, heal, hit, heal. Interesting - he can heal himself too (duh, he's a druid). So he heals himself and I heal myself. Then he heals himself and I heal myself. How long can this go on? How about 20 minutes?

I ran from the bugs, not because I wasn't ready for them, but because I read the posts! Also because I was bored. Twenty minutes of fighting & healing cyles is like twenty minutes of watching paint dry after awhile. Like the pendulum in a grandfather clock. I think I will wait a few levels and then come back for this. I hope it has about 10,000XP because that's what I think it needs.

Nice scorpions, though.

This quest has been nerfed, and thankfully so. It used to be that every single mob was guaranteed to spawn a bug, usually multiple bugs, and as many as three from what I can remember. I just did this with my most recent toon, and half of the mobs never even spawned a bug. I didn't complain!

This is actually easier for us priests than you would think.&nbsp As they are immune to fear they are still undead and can be shackled.

Dot them, DD, get them to about 1-6% hps, then shackle.&nbsp Back up and blast away, the spawned mobs wont come after you and just wait until they die so you can loot up.&nbsp Cake.

Southwind Village is basically due south of Valor's Rest along the eastern mountains.

You should see plenty of these druids and sentinels. You don't even have to enter the village to do this quest. They are all single pulls and they don't hit too hard. The sentinels are tougher than the druids, but not by much. Only risk to doing this solo is you may spawn 1-3 wasps. About half the time I got no wasps at all, but the other half I'd typically get 1, more rarely 2, and only once 3. If you can handle the adds, no problem.

As a mage, the way to do this is to hit the druid/sentinel with spells as usual but wait to use your Frost Nova till the mob is down to 20% health or less. Frost Nova the mob in place and run to distance. Hit them with your favorite long range spell and follow up with Fire Blast if needed. The wasps spawn (if at all) next to the dead druid/sentinel's body, but at this range you shouldn't aggro them. If you leave the wasp(s) alone for 2-3 minutes, they'll despawn and you can loot the druid/sentinel corpse in peace.

I did this quest rather easily as a 56 Ret/Holy specced pally. It took a little time but was not all that difficult.

First the druids and sentinals are undead so they are subject to our spells.

Before you pull one, make sure you are full HP/Mana. Tag one with exorcism. When fighting a druid I would have my biggest 2h bonker equipped, have divino aura up and use SoTC. I'd beat on them until they started to heal themselves then cast HoJ. If I were lucky SoTC would proc while they are stunned, if not I'd exor them again. Druids died quickly. When the wasp spawned, if just one spawned, I'd fight it toe to toe. if multiple spawned I'd switch to ret aura with 1h sword and shield. I'd consecrate as often as it was up and they would go down. Only when multiple wasps spawned is when I had to heal myslef during the fight. When fighting the sentinals I'd use the same tactic as fighting multiple wasps. The Sents hit fast so they would beat themselves to death on my ret aura.

I did not die at all doing this, I didn't even have a close call. I was not buffed with anything other than what I had (well fed). All in all a fun series of fights

For ppl who have trouble with this quest, its not that hard.

1. Go to coord (Southwind) 65.35
2. Kill the druids/sentinel.
3. Just before u are about to kill it, get some distance and finish them with range.
4. After he dies the fyling mobs will spawn, BUT becouse u killed the druid/sentinel from an distance, u are out of there agro range.

There easy as pie

[Yellow]Hunter tip:[/Yellow] Feign death as soon as you make the druid/sentinel kill. Make sure you run back from the kill so you can get up w/o aggro from the hives. Make sure neither you or you pet have been tagged and this tactic should work well for the moments when 2+ wasps decide to snack on you.

Wasps despawn after 3 mins or so and you can raid the body after, though it's not necessary for this quest.

[Yellow]addendum for all classes:[/Yellow] if you run back fast enough, you may get out of aggro range, though I didn't test this very well.

It's nearly impossible to solo this as a lvl 54 warrior, and I doubt I'd have more luck at levels 55-57. Even if I can keep the druids from spamming heals/kill the sentinels fairly quickly, my HP is down to 40-50%. Then the drones spawn, usually of equal or one level higher than the mob that got killed.

If it's one drone, I can perhaps hamstring it and run away. If it's two, I die. If it's three, I die even faster.

I guess I could have brought some swiftness potions, but I hadn't prepared for a quest as dumb as this one. My nifty stopwatch saved my ass more than once, although the cooldown on it is so long that it's hardly economical for a killing like this. Plus I lost a ton of cash because of repairs...

Why don't they warn you about the drones in the quest text? Or at least tell you to bring friends? Stupid!

Apparently the hive drones don't follow you indefinitely anymore, now they chase you and give up after some time. They return to the place where the mob died, hover around him for about two minutes and die afterwards.

Corpse will still be lootable, and you can repeat the process as much as needed. It will take you more time, but this change is a godsend for melee classes and lower lvls.

I was 55 when I did this and its not too bad for a mage. Just take out the guy quick with fire or frost or whatever .. and make sure to couterspell druid heals! Frost nova and run away from spawn mobs. The buggies will die eventually.. my advice is that you alternate between sides east and west while waiting for the bugs to die. Once your done on one side go back, loot and kill on the other.

This method is similar to the one above, but less running around.&nbsp Send in the pet and stay back as usual.&nbsp Sometime after pet attacks, put him on "Stay" (as opposed to default "follow")&nbsp After mob dies and Wasps spawn, he'll stay and fight while you're running the other way.&nbsp Once you've gotten out of range of your pet, he'll disappear leaving the mob to fight nothing.&nbsp (if you do this right, pet won't be in combat very long before he disappears and will retain his health)&nbsp After that, feign.&nbsp Aggro is COMPLETELY broken at this point and then you're safe to call your pet who will usually still be in pretty good shape.&nbsp This works so well it's almost like cheating!

The druids were all 56 for me and not too hard if you plan your attack: lightning shield, rockbiter, lightning bolt from afar and frost shock as they come toward you. This slows them and gives time for cooldown so you can keep earthshock ready when you see them try to heal themselves. Threw searing totem as well. Interrupt/damage with earthshock.

Keep yourself healed and budget your mana cuz one or two lvl 58 bugs spawn as soon as the druid dies. First time two spawned I managed with stoneclaw and a mana potion but the next time I died. As I came back to reclaim my corpse I noticed the bugs hovering over my kill. I rezzed, healed and in a minute or so the bugs dropped dead of their own accord and I could move in and loot.

From that point on it was kill the druid and keep enough health/mana to throw earthbind and run from bugs. Make sure you plan an escape direction out the road is good. Once out of range you can heal and either 1. move in and kill the bugs or 2. wait for them to drop and move in for loot.

Loot was just a few silver and insect parts tough a nice green cloth headpiece dropped once.

Same drill for the sentinels. They dont heal themselves but they are about a level higher.

This quest appears as yellow inthe log at 54, but be warned, after killing any of the druids or sentinels, a wasp will spawn whose level appears as orange at 54, I suppose it's possible to just run away from them, but they will Daze you. Be warned the wasps are level 58 and there isn't always a place to run to. Addig the wasp thing I think was very stupid and makes the quest much harder. I don't think it should appear as yellow in the log at 54 if level 58 wasps spawn on you.

I soloed this quest as a level 54 Hunter.
This is how i did it:

As mentioned above, the respawn rate is very fast. At both sides of the entrance, there are some Tortured Druids and some Tortured Senitinels. I started on the right side of the entrance, killing one of the spirits. When the Hive Drone spawned, I let my pet take the first hit. In that way, the wasp will aggro on my pet, not me. Then I looted the corpse and ran away until i lost sight of my pet. (No pet-picture on the upper left part on my monitor) After a little "healing-rest", I called my pet and went to the left side of the entrance. On the right side, I could still see the Wasp fly around, so I did not want to go over there incase I would aggro it again. Anyway; killing a druid on the right side, made another Hive Drone spawn. I let the pet take care of it while I ran down the road again. Then I rested and called my pet. Scince the respawn rate on these spirits are so fast, you can finish this quest without actually going into the center. Neat?! :)
The Hive Drones die out automatically after 5-8 min.

NB: Running back and forth like this, will ALWAYS spawn a wasp. I guess this is because you never kill any of them.

PS: Use Viper Sting on the druids twice while the pet is active. In this way, the druids are more likely not to heal themselvs. Remeber; The Viper Sting drains mana ;)

We priests have an unfair advantage with this quest. :) Method A is preferable, but Method B works fine, too.

Method A: Get the druid or sentinel close to death and lock him up with Shackle Undead. Retreat to the limit of your Mind Blast spell and kill him with it. You should be far enough away that you won't even aggro the bugs. Note: I had all three talent points allocated to the Shadow Reach talent, but my guess is that this will work even without that additional distance.

Method B: If for some reason Shackle doesn't hold, kill the target, fear the bugs, and run.

I was 55 when I did this quest.

Something rogues can try, and I found that this works pretty well, is to make sure stealth is bound to an easy to press key, preferably one with easy access, and preferably one you already press by habit to enter stealth.

As the mob approaches low health, be poised to press your stealth key. As soon as you see any signs of silithid spawning (the message in combat text, the "poof" sound, etc) immediately enter stealth and back away.

Not 100%, but seemed to keep me from getting aggro most of the time.

Hey, it's better than nothing, which is what other classes have, haha.
