The Woodpaw Gnolls

Search the Woodpaw Gnoll camps of southern Feralas for evidence of the courier's belongings or the courier himself.

Description

Our "friends" the Woodpaw might have gotten Raschal in the end, but something tells me that's not what occurred. Still, they're the best place to start looking.

I wish I had clearer insight as to what to do, but all I have right now is 'Search the Woodpaw camps - go.' I do know that gnolls will keep items they scavenge and fight over them; maybe they ran across the backpacks Quint mentioned. I hadn't risked a head-on fight in past searches, but with Quint's vision on this I say rip into them.

Calling this one of the worst quests in WoW will be an understatement. This is THE worst quest I encountered in my first 45 levels of playing. The description of the quest is vague and this thottbot page contains a lot of misleading information although there are also correct pointers. So here it goes as recent as May 2006.

Before I begin, I really need to vent last night frustration. I spent a grand total of one whole hour searching for this stupid "evidence". Considering the xp rewarded, that is like 2800 xp for an hour play. Pretty pathetic. I read somewhere that this quest chain leads to a nice dagger reward, well I really hope that's the case.

Before I jump into details, let me clarify some misleading information mentioned above. I actually do not consider them errors because game settings might be readjusted from several months ago. And I don't think it's a spawn randomly at any Gnoll camps because even after I click on the thing, it didn't disappear so I assume anyone with the quest can still click on it.

misleading info #1: "it's a bag." Let me clarify. No, it does not look like a bag. You can argue it looks like a sack. Or I simply refer it as a medium-size-tree-trunk-looking kinda thing.

misleading info #2: "it is hanging from a tree." No, it does not hang from a tree at least not in my case. It's more like the sack thing is leaning against the side of tree. If you are looking for a bag hanging from a branch of those small trees, it's not. The sack is at the side of one of those huge trees.

misleading info #3: "The camp with bag is at the trees where lights shatter through." This piece of info is the very reason I spent helpless 30 min circling those trees with lights coming through. NO, the camp is NOT there. Gnoll camps that are set up near trees where lights shatter are southeast of that lake. The real camp is straight south of the lake.&nbsp

misleading info #4: "The camp is on a plateau against a tree." This piece of info is actually correct, but if you notice, ALL camps are on a plateau somewhat near a tree. So this info alone is not sufficient.

misleading info #5: "The camp has a distinct feature that is it has a cage." Again, 50% of gnoll camps have one or 2 cages.

Now, the correct steps:

1. Like most of comments above mentioned, get yourself positioned at the "finger tip" of the lake. The lake looks a like a hand with a finger sticking out, so get yourself at the finger tip of the hand.

2. Now, face direct south. Not southeast, but straight south.

3. Now, walk straight south. The trees with lights shatter through should be on your distant left-hand side. Now you should be able to walk to the bottom of a huge tree. On your right-hand side there is a gnoll camp against this huge tree.

4. If you climb up the plateau, the sack thing is next to the first gnoll you will encountered. This first gnoll can be killed without aggro additional gnolls. So you can kill him and click on the quest thing.

Two excellent pictures are posted by HuntehKy several months ago. Now, I'll re-post the picture links.

http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/2708/dyrn22ou.jpg

The quest is an instant click so you can literally click on it and run. But the mobs near it can be single pulled and killed, so I see no reason why you want to use "hit and run" strategy.

Hope this helps!&nbsp

Yes, I went the wrong direction at first, but after reading some of the other comments here, it isn't that bad.&nbsp There are many camps, so it can get confusing.&nbsp There are a few located at the very southern tip of the pond in the Wildpaw area.&nbsp One in particular has a large tree, a tent, a fire, but most importantly - and disticntly to me - A CAGE.&nbsp No one is in the cage, but the cage will help ID the correct camp.&nbsp Whether the backpack is hanging from the tree or on a post is up for debate, but it is right beside the tent - off of the ground.&nbsp Once you "open" the backpack, there are two follow up quests.&nbsp One is to deliver a package to Thalannar - an easy 2100 XP for me at my level.&nbsp The other part is to go find the guy on one of the mounds even further to the south from where you get the backpack.&nbsp Haven't tried it yet, but so far I have over 4500 XP for finding the backpack and delivering its contents.

Mages can just run to the middle of the field, click the item and ice block. You can still accept the quest while iceblocked. After that, just frost nova and blink as far away as possible.

This is the most ridiculous quest ever (next to the giant zapper/elemental core quests). I went to the northern camps first. NO. The camp is in the south. They all look the same. Nothing helps except the coords which are also a little unhelpful because while you're trying to find it, you're constantly running into annoying mobs.

http://img357.imageshack.us/img357/8028/untitled7pj.png

That's what it looks like. Good luck.

PS just when you think it's over, it's not. The quest has a second part. *sigh*

Ok, here's the deal. If you follow some of the advice about the little lake to the south that kindof looks like a pointing finger, then good. Go to the very tip of that finger to where it's pointing.
On your mini-map you'll see litte dark brown paths going FROM the tip of the finger. Follow the one (I think there's only one anyway) heading mostly south, then it quicky splits to two ways. follow the path, then keep going south (and a LITTLE bit southeast).
The camp in front of you is the right one. Look for the cages, and the backpack will be pinned to the tree. Good luck!

The camp with the cage has the backpack&nbsp - looks kinda like leather "teardrop" shaped items on the side of the big tree.

There's a mining deposit (1 time it was Truesilver, another it was Mithril) on the side of the plateau where the camp is located.

In a camp next to a tree. It's actually pinned to the tree.

73:56 is the cordinates. When you vere off the road to the small lake that looks like a pointing hand go a little south of the lake and you come to the gnoll camp. Three sets its the set on the left (east) and the backpack is leaning up against the tree next to the big net baskets things. Very easy!

If you see the shining tree, your at the right place. But next to it is a another tree with slope and a small camp.If you kill the Gnoll at the camp you'll see that there is a small sack...bags...backpack, whatever you want to call it, it will just be on the wall of the tree. You can reconize it if you see two or three cages, one has a point on the top of it. It took me about an hour to find it, so i hope you guys do! >.>

nearly every bloody gnoll encampment is near a tree... if you're running around under roots and beams of light tho, you're in the wrong one. there are reavers and mystics around like ff said, and just cause i ran into a few cage-like crate camps, the two cage-like referred to earlier aren't the same kind, one's oval like an barrel and one's a box.

'hanging from a tree' led me on a wild goose chase for about an hour and a half. There are a pair of bags *nailed* to a tree trunk..a gnoll camp is at the base of the tree trunk. It's roughly in the area stated but not near the waters edge of the lake...it's 2-3 camps out from the lake..bushes on either side of the bags can make em hard to spot. They're about chest-height.

If you stand exactly on little bluff at very southern tip of small lake - and look exactly south you will see a tent. There is another tent to the left (east) - and on the very large tree thats there, hang two little bags about 2 feet off the ground. Hope that helps.

If you use CTMod the location is at 70,56

And to be more specific it is hanging on the side of the trunk of the huge tree as mentioned above. (hanging from a tree was a bit misleading)on the west side of the trunk of the tree.

a small plateau is on that side with a gnoll camp sitting right on it.

Go to the SE tip of the lake at 72,54 and look about 175 degrees. That is the tree and camp that you have to get the pack from. IF you are looking at the tree with all the high exposed roots then you are looking at the wrong tree. This tree is the tree to the west of that one.

oh... the pack is behind that tent that is closest to you as listed above but you can get the interaction cursor on it.

It's located like they say on a tree in a camp.

The camp is south of the eastern tip of the small lake Woodpaw Hills -- near Writhing Deep part of the zone.
